Happening Around Town

Charleston is definitely exploding with fun, food, and festivities in July! There is plenty for families to do together and lots of cool activities for the kids while they are on summer break. The Clay Center, Appalachian Power Park, and Cato Park all have wonderful camps available for children. Types and prices vary, check the venues for details. All the branches of the Kanawha Public Library have a wide variety of daytime programs for the family, as well. Contact your local branch for dates and times. “Mountain Stage” has put together THREE concerts for this month! For 34 years, this live music radio show produced by WV Public Broadcasting has been distributed by NPR on more than 200 stations all over the world. It is always a wonderfully eclectic line-up of music and entertainment. The weekly free “Live on the Levee” concert series has really hit it out of the park this month

with an appearance by “10,000 Maniacs”, the multi-platinum alternative rock band, coupled with a local favorite “Qiet”. Grab your bag chair and come early for that one! Capitol Market always has something creative going on. This month, Chef Paul Smith will be holding two live cooking demonstrations, and “Capitol Market On Tap” returns for another evening of beer tasting with craft beers, food, and lots of live music. Speaking of creative, checking out the Downtown Charleston ArtWalk and Art After Dark is a great way to spend a summer evening enjoying regional art and performances. One day later, “Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus Live” features “the world’s biggest and most dangerous stunts”, in a fully choreographed, actionpacked, theatrical spectacular. that is being held at Laidley Field.

...at Libbey-Owens-Ford

Today, the Libby Owens Ford smokestacks remain only in the memories of those old enough to remember Reagan becoming President, John Lennon being shot, and Mt. St. Helens erupting. The austere row of brick stacks towered over the far east end of Kanawha City’s MacCorkle Avenue; a silent sentries of a passing era. Glass product manufacturers Edward Drummond Libbey, Michael Joseph Owens and Edward Ford, who had all separate, sizable companies, merged in 1930 to form the Libbey-Owens-Ford Company. The Libbey Owens Company opened its glass manufacturing operations in Kanawha City in 191 , building six units in 191 , six more units in 191 and 192 , making it the largest plate glass plant in the world. In 192 , the Edward Ford Plate Glass Company bought into the company and the name changed to Libbey-Owens-Ford. By 1929, the Charleston plant was one of the largest plants manufacturing plate, window, windshield, and non-shattering glass. An additional plant, Owens Illinois Bottle Company, was erected across MacCorkle Avenue to produce ars. With the repeal of Prohibition, they began producing beer bottles as well. By the 19 0’s, the plant grew to be the largest ar and bottle manufacturer in the world. The two ad acent plants, divided by MacCorkle Avenue was often assumed to be one plant, but were two separate businesses. Like many other manufacturing plants of the era, the glass plants were key in the growth of the area. The surrounding neighborhoods burgeoned as employees moved to live near their obs. Kanawha City still boasts tiny houses that were built for glass plant workers. Nearly too small to even be considered bungalows, these homes were anywhere from 450 to 50 square foot structures. Although tiny, they provided adequate housing for scores of Libbey-Owens-Ford families. Situated on lots a mere twenty feet wide, the tiny house footprint was only about 15 by 30 feet. The Kanawha River valley provided an abundance of raw materials and an energy source supply. Transportation was readily available via the river and the railroad. The most populous county in West Virginia, Kanawha County had a ready workforce for the ever-growing needs of the huge glass plant.

Libbey-Owens, before being joined by Ford, was the world’s largest producer of window glass. In 1930, they supplied glass used in the construction of the Empire State Building. The Waldorf Astoria Hotel also utilized their glass. A working plant from 192 to 19 0, LibbeyOwens-Ford was the longest lived glass plant in Charleston. The property where Libbey-Owens-Ford plant was located, at MacCorkle Ave & 5 th Street, was deemed a superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA identified such sites because they pose or had once posed a potential risk to human health and or the environment due to contamination by one or more hazardous wastes. The site was determined to have arsenic in the soil, along with other waste byproducts of glass manufacture. The levels were determined to be so low they posed virtually no threat. The Libbey-Owens-Ford plant, although registered as an active superfund site, it was not on the National Priorities List, which meant the EPA did not consider it one of the nation’s most hazardous waste sites. It has since been dropped from the list. The Libbey-Owens-Ford Retiree Club, met regularly for years, although it is now possibly defunct. Former employees made bonds with co-workers that lasted a lifetime. As their ranks are dwindling, so too are those who remember the distinctive LOF towers.

Bright Spring colors often create a sensory reaction after the long dark monochromatic palette of winter. Rich Fall color revive that sense of coziness we linger for after the usual heat of summer.

In summer, white offers that clean fresh feeling that allows us to relax & take that long desired nap!

Let's consider three colors which are everpresent this time of year! RED is one of those bold colors that demand immediate attention. If you want to cause the eye to be drawn to a certain point in a room, add a touch of red! If you want to make a strong statement of style and a reaction from the space, use a red palette. Red is not one of those comforting colors but is more apt to create strong reaction.

Use Red with caution and a good understanding of the desired result. Keep in mind also that there is a complete range of reds to consider. Softer Reds such as Pink are much more comforting than the Brilliant Red that might draw attention to your car! WHITE is considered the Clean element! Sometimes coming across as sterile and often as fresh, white seems to be one of those palettes that create sensory reactions of "WOW" or fear (to enter a space)!

Driving a little less than six hours Southwest of Charleston brings you to Nashville, Tennessee. Over the past 20 years, Nashville has become one of America’s most sought after destinations. Steeped in Southern traditions, Nashville is full of fun offerings for the whole family. Head to Nashville on a long weekend because this is one lively city! Here are some recommendations to help inspire a weekend traveler getaway in Nashville.

WHERE TO STAY IN NASHVILLE Nashville is divided into neighborhoods, some more popular than others. My favorites are 12 South and West End. The West End is home to a plethora of hotel chains including Lowes, Aloft, Embassy Suites, and Marriott.

Consider cashing in your hotel points at one of these locations for a discounted stay. Airbnb fans will definitely want to check out the 12 South Treehouse; a cute twobedroom apartment with onsite parking and little traffic. Note: Parking is expensive in Nashville; use Lyft or Uber to get around.

WHERE TO DINE IN NASHVILLE Nashville is home to delicious food, but not all restaurants will break the bank. In the 12 South area, I recommend BarTaco (cauliflower tacos, street corn, and margaritas), Edley’s Bar-B-Que (brunch spot), and Lana’s Copper Kettle (Southern favorites).

Tourists flock in droves to Hillsboro Village for Pancake Pantry’s delicious fare. Try their sweet potato pancakes, a Nashville tradition. Park free behind the Pancake Pantry with a validated ticket. Across the street is Provence, offering crustless quiche, homemade breads, and teas.

and dancing water shows are thrilling to watch. There are dozens of shops to check out and great restaurants, too. Opryland is quite an expensive place to stay, but visiting guests are always welcome. Holiday visits are even better when the hotel is all decked out in seasonal decorations.

A trip to Nashville would not be complete without people watching on Lower Broadway and listening to up and coming musicians/ bands. Printers Alley, a famous nightclub hotspot in the 1940’s and 50’s, is no longer a must-see, but still an icon.

NASHVILLE UNIQUE OFFERINGS

Minutes way from Opryland is Opry Mills, Nashville’s largest retail and outlet destination with over 200 stores. There is also a 20 screen cinema, IMAX theater, and Dave & Buster’s entertainment complex. Families may want to have a meal (with free fun!) at the Rainforest Cafe.

WHAT TO DO ON YOUR WEEKEND TRIP

Nashville is the home of country music. Visit the famous Ryman Auditorium or see a show at the Grand Ole Opry, founded in 1925. Tour the Country Music Hall of Fame, a stateof-the-art facility with changing exhibits and cram packed with country legend displays. Although the Hall of Fame is always a great choice, it is a great rainy day activity. While in Nashville, visiting Opryland is a must. This mammoth hotel is a stellar place to walk around and admire thousands of plants and flowers. Opryland’s cascading waterfalls

Nashville is full of boutiques but the Mall at Green Hills is home to top-of-the-line shopping. There are quite a few tours in Nashville, if you want to try some of the area’s local eateries or see the homes of country music stars. Stroll through Centennial Park, where you can feed the ducks and take pictures of the full-size Parthenon replica, built for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. History lovers will want to visit Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage (a National Historic Landmark) and take a tour of his home and plantation. Be sure to swing by the picturesque Tennessee State Capitol.
