arages have been the birthplace of many famous bands for decades, but one High Desert group credits a local bar for its inception. Debuting as New Beginnings and featuring the strong vocals of Sueanne Vega, the band pleasantly surprised the New Year’s Eve crowd at Frogee’s in Apple Valley by filling in for one that canceled. Vega’s mother, Susan Vega, says positive news of her daughter’s first performance spread like wildfire.

“Everyone called everyone,” Susan Vega said. Sueanne Vega says she and the band had only a month to prepare more than a dozen songs and New Beginnings had only five rehearsals before the debut. Since then, the band has been renamed Suzay and the Begin-

nings, with Sueanne Vega taking on a stage name. Lead guitarist John Bickers said the lead singer’s vocal range and talent made learning songs in crunch time easier. “She’s always being modest,” Bickers said. “I was so impressed with the vocal range of

the songs she picked. (Sueanne Vega) can sing what’s current, classic rock, anything. It’s amazing that she can handle anything we throw at her.” Bickers has been playing locally in cover bands J < < CF:8 C 98 E ; G8> < /

ÊClZpË Scarlett Johansson plays a drug mule who is injected with a drug that enhances her abilities. Director Luc Besson seamlessly takes a standard action film and ramps it up the deeper mean9 with ings of Lucy’s transformation. The action parts are the weakest part, with Besson ignoring large bits of logic to keep the film moving ahead. There’s also an immediate acceptance by cops and professors that seems expedited just to keep the pace high. With a major assist from Johansson, Besson delivers plenty of action in a smart package.

Industrious underground dwellers are threatened by a man looking to wipe them out. An outlandishly funny tale brought to 9" life through beautiful stop-animation photography. The film combines Monty Python-style humor with the sense and sensibilities of Oliver Twist and is pre-

sented in a wonderfully creepy animated style. Directors Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi found a way to make an up-tempo movie using a painfully slow style of moviemaking.

since 1987 and had made two professional albums. Jorden Marshall, the drummer, also found a good rhythm following the diversity of Sueanne Vega’s talent and the professionalism of Bickers. He was thrown into the mix lickety-split. “I came in looking for a job as a bar back, actually,” Marshall said. “Then they asked if I could be a drummer also. I said, “Sure, just hire me.’ ” Sueanne Vega, a lifelong singer, said the process from conception to stage has been a dream come true. She says she grew up with music because of her parents — they both sing.

“I like the word ‘beginnings’ because beginnings are fun and exciting and full of hope,” she said. “Real feel-good stuff.” The initial idea for the band came from Frogee’s co-owner, Joy Garcia. After New Beginnings was assembled, fate took over and the newly conceived band already was booked for the high-profile gig. “It all happened so quickly,” Sueanne Vega said. “Joy calls me up and asks if they are ready to perform 10 songs by New Year’s Eve, learn it all within a one-month time frame. We tried to pick songs that were more fun, upbeat songs, so we did

three sets of six songs. We got so much good feedback that we had to do an encore.” Sueanne Vega says the success of the band is due to open-mindedness and the lack of ego the musicians bring to the stage. “Everyone is open, there’s no diva,” she said. “Personality is important. We’re all kind of goofy and that helps. It’s chemistry.” Suzay and the Beginnings play at 9 p.m. Friday and again at 9 p.m. Feb. 14 at Frogee’s Cocktail bar, 21820 Highway 18 in Apple Valley. No cover is charged for the performances but those attending must be 21 and over. For more information, call 760-247-6800.

As engaging as these intricately crafted musical monuments to the way the Internet-surfing brain works are, though, the band is far more effective when it simply lets the songs unfold. “American Beauty/ American Psycho” is filled with such complexities, but the result ends up being quite simple. It makes sense that the Chicago quartet follows “Save Rock and Roll,” their bid to bring rock back to pop radio, with their vision of what rock and roll should become. The resulting “American Beauty/ American Psycho” (Interscope) album takes a page from hip-hop’s playbook and applies it to rock. Rather than striving for a specific rock sound, Fall Out Boy borrows from other genres and other rock incarnations to craft something new and uniquely theirs. There is plenty of sampling on “American Beauty/American Psycho,”

with bits of Mvtley Cr 5/8e’s “Too Fast for Love” on the title track, part of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner” on the first single, “Centuries,” and, brilliantly, the theme from “The Munsters” on “Uma Thurman.” “Uma Thurman” is the best of these creations, with the unmistakable sample adding to the song’s vibe but never overpowering it. The song is overstuffed

with ideas — from pop culture references to hiphop breaks and surf guitar flourishes — to better compete with the shortening attention spans of pop radio listeners. Same goes for the already-platinum “Centuries,” which packs so much into four minutes that it takes repeated listenings just to figure out what’s happening. (Be sure to pay attention to how the pitch-shifting on

rock’s band to beat.

Much of Sleater-Kinney’s new album, “No Cities to Love” (Sub Pop) — the first since the trio called it quits in 2006 — seems dedicated to the question: How did this happen? The album’s existence is a shock, after all, with

the band recording it in secret last year and announcing it after its completion. “We win, we lose,” they belt in “Surface Envy,” which somehow amplifies the Sleater-Kinney sound of jagged guitars and punk drumming to include elements of both Heart and New Order. “Only together do we break the rules.” In the charmingly pointy “A New Wave,” they confide, “It’s not a new wave, it’s just you and me.”

ou can tell by the name that seafood is a specialty at Cancun Mexican Seafood Restaurant in Hesperia. The popular eatery is celebrating more than seven years in its present location, with more than 20 years’ experience in preparing and serving delicious Mexican dishes plus a variety of “American” plates like burgers, steak, and surf and turf to happy customers In addition, Cancun has a full bar with an imaginative selection of “specialty drinks” including the Cantarito, a delicious blend of gold tequila, orange, lemon and lime juices, diet Squirt and served in a simple clay pot. Of course there are several other Margaritas including the “Cadillac,” made with specially aged tequila and Grand Marnier instead of Triple Sec. Flavored Margaritas are in vogue at Cancun as well, and you can have yours served frozen or on the rocks, whichever you prefer. Domestic and imported beers and wines are available, as well. We mentioned seafood, and Cancun has an appetizer, the Botana Del Mar, a sampling of the “best from the ocean” — shrimp, octopus, abalone, oysters and fish. This item is available for one or two persons. The “Botana Sampler” is taquitos, flautas, quesadilla and potato skins, served with sour cream and guacamole. A friend and I met for dinner at Cancun recently. I ordered Fish Tacos, and they were perfect, the fish crispy fried, the soft tacos open-faced to make for easy “dressing” with salsa, sour cream or guacamole. The tacos came with pico de gallo and sliced avocado. We stuck pretty much with seafood for dinner; my friend ordered Shrimp Enchiladas — two of them sautéed in Cancun’s special sauce and topped with green sauce and sliced avocado. Both dishes came with rice and beans. We also ordered a Guacamole Express, made at our table by Francisco, and served in a shallow molcajete bowl and a basket of freshly made tortilla chips. Whether your schedule only permits a quick meal or you are all ready for a leisurely dining eperience, you’ll be happy with your choices at Cancun. The menu items are delicious, and the service is super. You can schedule your visit around the “specials” each week, as well. Enjoy Happy Hour 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday with well drinks and Margaritas just $3.75 and domes-

Top: Shrimp Enchiladas, Strawberry Margarita on the rocks, Francisco prepares the “Guacamole Express.” Bottom: Fish Tacos with avocado, rice and beans; fresh tortilla chips and Guacamole Express, prepared at our table and served with flair. Cancun Mexican Seafood Restaurant is popular for a reason. Why not find out for

tic and draft specials as well. If tacos are your “thing,” visit Cancun for Taco Tuesday, for 99-cent tacos from 3 p.m. to closing and Margaritas for just a nickel with the purchase of a large Margarita. Each Wednesday is Happy Hour for the entire restaurant — bar and dining — with all-you-can-eat Enchiladas for just $10.25. Ask for details. Currently there is a combo special through February 1 — buy one combo, get the second for half price with the purchase of two beverages. Cancun Mexican Seafood Restaurant is located at 15550 Main St., Hesperia. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
