Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health, led the efforts to complete the Human Genome Project, a complex scientific enterprise directed at mapping and sequencing human DNA.  The Department of Social Work, in collaboration with the Department of English and Modern Languages, created a Spanish language program for social work students. In addition, the Department began planning an exchange program with Gallaudet University to broaden students’ knowledge of deaf issues. This collaboration is the first of its kind in the state.

 Th e Department of English and Modern languages graduated its first student from the africana literature program.  P rofessor Kala Richardson of the Department of English and Modern Languages continues to provide opportunities for students to study abroad. During summer 2008, six Bowie State University students studied in Ecuador.  Th e Department of Mathematics restructured its developmental mathematics program, which helps developmental students reduce their time to attain a degree by one semester, tripling the completion success rate of students taking remedial mathematics.

Faculty and Staff  P resident Burnim was selected chair of the executive Membership Development Committee of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. The coalition brings together universities that strive for national excellence while simultaneously promoting economic development, social health, and cultural vitality in the urban or metropolitan centers where they are located.
