House beautiful by G. Lisa Sullivan

Decorating a dollhouse is just like decorating a real house, only on a much smaller scale.

The summer before my senior year in college, I decided to spend my vacation living on campus, in a rather dilapidated coed fraternity, complete with sticky beercoated floors and lumpy old couches. My college friend, Donna Laskey, had also chosen to live on campus during that summer. She, however, had had the good sense to procure a much sought-after campus dorm room, where she lived in an immaculate, beautifully decorated space. It even smelled nice, thanks to some thoughtfully placed potpourri. My first thought upon seeing Donna’s “summer place” was, “Boy, Donna’s dorm room is nicer than most apartments!” My second thought was, “Why didn’t I decide to live in the dorm, too?” Following graduation, I moved into a small townhouse with one roommate, typical of most post-college graduates. My apartment was comfortable, but it definitely screamed, “Recent college grad!” Donna, not surprisingly, moved into a charming older apartment, and proceeded to decorate it with her usual flair. Antiques and reproduction pieces, English style fabrics and meticulously chosen accessories reflected Donna’s love of fine things, a trait she had inherited from her mother.
