Gluten-free eating Dear Dronfield Eye,

REGARDING the letter in a recent edition referring to coeliac friendly venues, I would like to make the following comments. Sharon must explain to people that she is coeliac. This is an illness requiring a strict diet. It is not a matter of choice like being vegetarian or vegan. Fortunately most major food retailers fully understand the condition and all supermarkets, including Marks and Spencer, have good choices for coeliacs. It’s been nearly 20 years since my wife was diagnosed coeliac and during this time we have holidayed in Europe and the UK, eating out on a regular basis. However, it’s still necessary to speak to a waiter and quite often the chef will come and talk to you. My suggestions for eating out locally are The Coach and Horses at Dronfield, The Old Pump at Barlow, The Bistro at Wentworth and The Ashford Arms at Ashford-in-the-Water. All these places have been excellent when we have been. The Green Steps Chip Shop at Hickmott Road, Sheffield, does gluten free fish and chips, plus a variety of pies. Wok Wonder, Greendale Shopping Centre, Green Lane, Dronfield, also understands the problem. If you visit Whitby, the Magpie Cafe is a must. I hope this is of help to Sharon. Pat Jackson
