HERMANN SONS NEWS

Analyzing need key in purchasing life insurance By TIM KOLBE Grand Vice President-Marketing SAN ANTONIO – Each year September is designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Last month’s Marketing News centered on the need for life insurance coverage. Our spokesperson, NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, shared her personal story about how life insurance was an important consideration given her family history and current avocation – racing cars around a track at speeds close to 200 mph. That’s a good reason to have adequate life insurance protection but how much is enough? Analyzing Need The answer to the question of how much life insurance protection to purchase depends on the individual need. Need is determined by considering what the survivors would require to maintain a semblance of their current lifestyle after the loss of

a loved one. A single person with little debt would need adequate protection to cover burial and other final expenses while the new father of twins, with a mortgage and spouse in a two-car, two-career family, would need more coverage. A young Hermann Sons member with a nominal whole life certificate is generally thought to be adequately protected until adulthood when a new phase of life begins. Newlyweds require coverage for each other until the stork arrives and the need for coverage increases. Child care, educa-

tion, food, clothes, utilities, technology, college loan debt…. The list goes on and on. The Needs Analysis is a vital tool to assess need and ascertain the amount of coverage to purchase. We have several ways for anyone to explore this tool by visiting www. hermannsons.org and clicking on the Insurance Education/ Needs Analysis tab. In addition, our agents have both a paper and digital version available during consult with clients to help in understanding how coverage is unique to each individual’s circumstances. Once Need is Established Choosing the type of life insurance coverage is the next step once the amount of need is determined. Hermann Sons offers both whole and term life plans tailored to fit each client’s needs. See HERMANN SONS, Pg. 5

Beam honored Preuss elected to board Grand President Buddy Preuss, right, was elected to the American Fraternal Alliance board of directors during the national conference held earlier this month in Nashville. He is pictured with William R. O’Toole, chairman of the board for the Alliance who is the president and CEO of Catholic Financial Life. Brother Preuss is the third Hermann Sons Grand President to serve the Alliance on its board of directors. Louis Engelke and Leroy Muehlstein both served in that capacity. “It is an honor for me to serve Hermann Sons in this way and I look forward to working with leaders from other organizations to strengthen the fraternal system,” Brother Preuss said.

Grand Vice President-Secretary/ Treasurer Mary Beam celebrated her 50 years of service to Hermann Sons on Friday, Sept. 16. The Home Office staff planned a surprise party for her that was held in the Hall of Grand Presidents. Also attending were members of her family including husband Mike and children Marla and Marcus, pictured above. Daughter Margo lives in Seattle and could not attend. Prior to becoming Grand Vice PresidentSecretary/Treasurer in 1998, Sister Beam served as administrative assistant to the Grand President. She began serving in that capacity in 1974 for Henry Riemer followed by Louis Engelke and Leroy Muehlstein. She started her career in the Membership Department when Fritz Schilo was Grand President.

Grand President's Message Don’t make excuses for not buying insurance I like watching YouTube just for fun. Seeing the different videos of the ridiculous to the absurd gone viral is strangely entertaining. Recently I saw a compilation of videos of people glued to their smart phone and totally unaware of their dangerous surroundings. They were running into buildings, walking into traffic and falling into fountains. Life can be like that. We are so focused on living but can be unaware of the hazards around us. I know parents who work hard to provide a home for their family but don’t see (or don’t want to accept) the possibilities of what happens to that home if something happens to them. September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And while many took this as an opportunity to take a closer look at their life insurance needs; many are still falling into fountains. What was your reason for not investigating your insurance needs? According to a 2015 Nerdwallet article, there are seven (bad) reasons people don’t buy life insurance. no. 1, no. 2 and no. 3 – Cost, misconceptions and other Financial Priorities Many people believe falsely that life insurance is unaffordable. Compound this fact with other financial priorities associated with life and people will often accept a small term policy at work (that may

disappear at any time) as their total protection plan. no. 4 – other Demands on attention Many start thinking about life insurance when they have children. Unfortunately, children also bring us sleepless nights, second jobs and soccer games. Who has the time or energy to talk about life insurance? no. 5 and no. 6 – Complexity and Lack of Trust Needs analysis, riders, beneficiaries, ownership – it’s all very confusing! You could talk to an agent but many consumers don’t trust insurance companies. no. 7 – Unpleasantness People don’t want to think about their own death or the death of a loved one. It’s easier to put off what is unpleasant. Of course, all of these are bad why reasons people don’t buy life insurance. In reality life insurance is affordable. Agents are required to act in the best interest of the client and can help you to discover your needs and explain coverage options that are right for you. They help to make the process clear and simple. So don’t wait until Life Insurance Awareness Month rolls around next year. Act now! There’s a fountain ahead! OFFICIAL BULLETIN

Grand Vice President-Secretary/Treasurer

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. This is an excellent time to learn more about the importance of life insurance and consider the purchase of even more coverage that everyone needs. Most of us believe their family’s financial well-being is as important as their emotional well-being. Can you believe that 4 in 10 Americans have no life insurance at all? Statistics show the need for greater awareness of life insurance and its benefits. Your Hermann Sons agent can help access what you need to keep your family financially safe and sound. 2016 LODGE SUBSIDY The Grand Committee at its July meeting approved the 2016 local lodge subsidy. The money was direct deposited to the local lodge bank accounts in mid-September. The subsidy is based on both adult and junior membership in good standing as of Dec. 31, 2015, and is to be used by the local lodges for the promotion and growth of membership through events, activities and community service endeavors. We also encourage lodges to use a portion of the lodge subsidy for the benefit of their junior members, such as for development of scholarship funds (both college or youth camp), lodge recognition of campers and dancers, school of dance fund-raisers or other activities that interest our growing youth membership. Lodges are asked to return the form in the lodge planner that records how the money is used and results from those activities. JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP September is normally a big month for our Underwriting Department. With the opening of a new dance season, many juniors join our organization. We hope and encourage lodge agents and members as well to invite all family members into our great organization. Family membership remains one of the high ideals of the benefit system. All lodges have received a membership goal and lodges that achieve their goal will be recognized at officer installations in January. Please support your organization with recommendations. Our success is built on membership. MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY Have you looked on our website to learn more about our new community outreach program? Click on Benefits and then Community Service and you will find information on Grief Support Services. Plans also are under way to sponsor a Grief Support Camp at our Youth Camp next summer for children ages 6-17 who have lost a loved one. Lodges and individuals may donate to this great cause and sponsor a child to attend the Grief Support Camp or lodges may host a special event with proceeds going to grief support services in their local area. This would be a great Make A Difference Day project for Oct. 22. Soon lodges will begin planning holiday parties that are wonderful social events. These are opportune times to meet, greet and enjoy new friends and a way to learn more about your lodge and their service. Membership is a benefit all of us should take advantage of. Fraternally, Mary Beam Grand Vice President-Secretary/Treasurer

Hermann Sons offers term, whole life plans Cont’d. from Pg. 1 Term Life Term insurance, the most affordable type of insurance when initially purchased, is designed to meet temporary needs. It provides protection for a specific period of time (the “term”) and generally pays a benefit only if you die during that term. This type of insurance often makes sense when you have

a need for coverage that will disappear at a specific point in time. For instance, you may decide that you only need coverage until your children graduate from college or a particular debt is paid off, such as your mortgage. With the exception of our Newborn Plan, Hermann Sons term products are available for adults only. Hermann Sons term products offer convertibility to whole life cov-

erage without evidence of insurability. This is a valuable feature not available on many commercial term products. Whole Life Whole life, by contrast, provides lifelong protection. As long as you pay the premiums and no loans, withdrawals or surrenders are taken, the full amount will be paid. Because it is designed to last a lifetime, permanent life insur-

Retirement Home Home resident enjoys five-week stay in Japan COMFORT – Visitors to the Retirement Home in August were Amy Morran, Austin; Beth Purcell, Georgetown; Craig, Sherry, Rose and Laurel Neeley, Grand Prairie; Clareen O’Quinn and Paula Hamrick, League City; Alayna Menzer, Adkins; Katrina Wiatrek, Jourdanton Lodge No. 310; Chris Stoeltje, Needville; Nona Anderson, Fredericksburg; Freddie and Cindy Smith, Jonathan and Breanna Harris, Mesquite; Cori Keller, Trinity Nursing and Rehab, Comfort; Ralf Mann, San Antonio; Gisela Mauve, Comfort; and Kaysi Anna Craig, Harper. Resident Billie DeSalme

reports that she, her daughter (Sissi Ormsby) and daughter-in-law (Lynette DeSalme) spent a total of five wonderful weeks in Japan visiting with family members. Upon arriving she was greeted by her first greatgrandson, Carlie William Jebens, and his parents, Ashley and Chris Jebens. In addition to visiting with them at the Yokosuka Naval Base which was only a short train ride away from their home away from home in the town of Zushi for two weeks they were able to do some sightseeing. Some of the highlights of the trip included visiting the

Tokyo Tower, Imperial Palace grounds, Ueno Park and touring the 5th Station point on beautiful Mount Fuji. Other adventures included visiting the town of Kamakura to see the huge Great Buddha, and a popular temple surrounded by an enormous hydrangea garden. The next leg of their trip was spent in Osaka where they made a day trip to see Hiroshima. The following day was spent strolling through the Osaka Castle and the great aquarium. They ended the day riding a giant ferris wheel over the Osaka Bay at night. Moving on to their final

destination of Sasebo, where Billie’s granddaughter Ashley is currently stationed in the U.S. Navy, they made a day trip to Nagasaki. The highlights of this last part of the trip included riding a pirate ship to see the 99 Islands and visiting an interactive zoo called BioPark which she said is very different from the zoos here in the United States. All in all, their Japan experience was full of excitement and culture as they not only visited Japan but lived it by adapting to the mass transportation of trains, subways, buses and taxis, as well as eating a small variety of their

foods. Resident Nora Naumann passed away on Aug. 17. The residents send their condolences to her family and loved ones. She will be missed. The newest residents are Pat Fleming and John Pirtle. The residents welcome them. One of our newest residents, Annette Shaw, has “dug right in” to help make our Home a more beautiful place to live. Seguin dancers, officers plant tree in Bertling’s memory SEGUIN – A live oak tree has been planted in memory of 6-year-old Bethany Bertling, a member of Hermann Sons who was recently killed in a car accident. The tree was planted on the grounds of the Seguin Lodge Hall in Seguin on Sunday, Aug. 28. The tree was planted and dedicated by the Seguin

School of Dance and its Parents’ Club officers in memory of the little girl who was a dance student. The tragic auto accident that took Bethany’s life also killed her grandmother, Ann Bertling, and a friend of the family, Tristan Gonzales, age 12. Brittany’s two broth-

ers Christian, age 12, and Landon, age 5, were critically injured. They are recovering and attended the dedication ceremony with their parents, Blake and Jennifer. The plaque that was placed in the ground in front of the tree reads “In memory of Bethany Bertling, 2016, Forever in our hearts.”

TSU forming Hermann Sons group SAN MARCOS – A Hermann Sons social group is being formed among students attending Texas State University. This group of members and non-members will be gathering once a month for social and other purposes. San Marcos Lodge No. 26 also has invited the students to participate in some of its gatherings. Texas State University was identified as a good place for a Hermann Sons social group due to the number of students who were campers, dancers or Camp staff members. Hermann Sons Youth Camp has participated in job fairs at the university for years for the same reason. Three Camp staff members are spearheading the social group efforts – Carli Bartell, Alec Chamberlain and Aimee Miller. Aimee is also a dance teacher for Hermann Sons. Plans for this group have been in the works since earlier this year and with the beginning of a new school

Fort Worth Lodge recognizes junior members FORT WORTH – As a new school year begins, Fort Worth Lodge No. 33 would like to recognize two of its junior members. Ronnie Burns-Lane is a starter for the varsity football team at Centennial High School this year. Ronnie plays defensive tackle. The team won its first two games of the season. He hopes to continue playing football at Sam Houston State University next year. Ronnie is the son of Bill and Karen Burns-Lane. Makayla Jones is entering her freshman year at Burleson Collegiate High School. This is a new school that will be part of Hill College. Makayla received her acceptance letter to Hill College on Sept. 1 in a ceremony at the school. When she graduates from high school she will have her high school diploma as well as an associate’s degree from Hill College. Makayla is the daughter of Scott and Shannon Jones.

Congratulations to Kenneth Brehm who has reached his 60-year membership milestone. Brother Brehm joined Hermann Sons on Sept. 18, 1956. Congratulations to Karen Burns-Lane for winning singles in the Hermann Sons State Bowling Tournament. Michelle Hampton and Deneen Castor won the doubles competition. There were others from Fort Worth who placed very high. Fall bowling leagues have started so if you want to bowl in the tournament next year, go out and join a league. It is fun and good exercise. The end of the year will be here soon and Fort Worth Lodge is still short of its goal for new members. But the lodge can reach and exceed its goal with the help of each member. So put on your Hermann Sons cap and explain how important insurance protection is to your friends. They may think they have enough insurance,
