National Farm-City Week celebration set for Nov. 18 As part of National Farm-City Week, Vance County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the 2010 Farm-City Week breakfast on Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church. The featured speaker for the breakfast will be Mike Walden. Walden is a William Neal Reynolds professor and N.C. Cooperative Extension Service economist in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in N.C. State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He teaches and writes on personal finance, economic outlook and public policy. The mission of the National Farm-City Council is to enhance the linkages between farm families and urban residents, providing local organizations with educational programs and materials about the people who grow their food.

In recent years, the major focus of the programs and materials has been on consumer and classroom education. Student activity sheets, teacher packets, place mats and bookmarks are just a few of the materials the council has created to support its mission. In the past year, thousands of materials were used in classrooms, at farm-city banquets, at civic club meetings and in other venues. Farm-city activities are grassroots in nature. Communities across the nation hold farm-city events ranging from banquets to tours to job exchanges. Farm-city groups work closely with “Agriculture in the Classroom” programs in educating students and teachers about agriculture. Registration deadline for the Nov. 18 event is Friday. For information or to register, contact the Chamber at 438-8414.

Teacher Executive Institute partners with area businesses The 2010-2011 Teacher Executive Institute (TEI) program began in October with a dinner and orientation session for this year’s participants. In its 17th year, the program will provide classroom teachers, counselors and media specialists with opportunities to participate in seminars where leadership and management skills are taught. Participants will visit a variety of businesses within the community where they will meet employees, tour the facilities, learn about the business and take part in seminars designed to broaden their skills base. The overall intent of the program is to strengthen the partnership between business professionals and education professionals. Teachers and those in the business field will have the opportunity to understand each other’s role in preparing students to meet the challenges of the future. This year’s Teacher Executive Institute participants are: Jennifer Wade, Aycock Elementary; Cristen Trantham, Carver Elementary; Rolly Quizo, Clarke Elementary; Kristy Harp, Dabney Elementary; Amanda Hightower, New Hope Elementary; Yolande Dixon, Pinkston Street Elementary; Doreen Gilliam, E.O.
