Shavuot

Eve May 18 and May 19 Shavuot, one of the three pilgrimage holidays, is a spring holiday that celebrates the first harvest, the ripening of the first fruits, and most importantly, commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai. The festival of Shavuot combines some of the best aspects of Jewish observance and culture. On the one hand, Shavuot recalls the importance of the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people, and many Jews customarily use Shavuot as an opportunity to study from the Torah and other important Jewish texts. On the other hand, Shavuot (which is a public holiday) is also the opportunity to bring the Jewish community together, to celebrate its tradition and heritage, while rejoicing with delicious Shavuot treats. It is customary on Shavuot to eat dairy foods, so delicious recipes for blintzes, cheesecake, and ice cream sundaes are in high demand! After donning the customary white clothing, if you happen to be visiting a kibbutz, it is worth attending the annual Bikkurim ceremony, in which kibbutz members and many of the younger generation perform and proudly celebrate the produce grown on the kibbutz.

The variety of different venues, including churches and outdoor locations, offer all music lovers the chance to listen to an assortment of choirs, individual performers and instrumental performances and at the same time take pleasure in each venue’s distinct atmosphere. As well as first-class Israeli performers, the festival’s special guests include the Utah University Choir and international artists. Take an active part in the festival and participate in the “Audience is the Choir Sing-Along Concert” and hello ISRAEL

Graffiti Artists Invited To Paint Israel-Project Murality Formed by joining the words ‘mural’ and ‘morality’ to evoke justice through art, this special project brings to Israel from New York and Europe, amazing urban artists, who during a week long journey from Sderot through to Tel Aviv, will together transform the grim reminders of war – bomb shelters, fortified playgrounds, the reminders of homes burned out beyond repair and the remains of rockets – into soaring masterpieces of freedom and expression. They will also paint dozens of murals at community centers in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as a way to show solidarity and give hope to those less fortunate. To end this amazing week of graffitti art, the artists will present to Israel an exhibit of documentary material of their trip and the artwork that they created on canvases while on their journey throughout Israel. Helmut R. Schulze a renowned German photo journalist, this photographic exhibition follows his journeys across Afghanistan, a land of wild landscapes and bitter wars, Schulze portrays stunning views and its people, their daily lives and hardships. Visiting Afghanistan several times between 2002 and 2008 during all four seasons Schulze and his small team travelled about 4.000 kilometers throughout the country. The team accompanied military patrols to desolate villages where Schulze photographed breathtaking landscapes from the ground and while flying in a helicopter. Tickets: (02) 5605755 www.jerusalem-theatre.co.il PERFORMANCES Arkadi Zaides’ “Quiet” In light of the growing violence and mistrust between communities in Israel, this performance creates a platform which allows for an open and honest communication; a place where it is safe to let one's demons out and set them free. The four characters in the piece reveal a landscape which contains aggression, compassion, confusion and yearning. In the midst of this intensity, lies a constant search for a place which is able to contain all conflicted layers - a place which is quiet. Tmuna Theatre, May 8, 8pm [70NIS] www.arkadizaides.com Batsheva Dance Company’s Premiere “Bill” The premiere of the latest creation by Sharon Eyal, is an extraordinary work that dares not to play by the rules and results in a uniquely innovative dance experience. The 21 dancers immerse themselves completely in this work of art in the true sense of the word. Fascinating, intense and breathtakingly exciting are superlatives which so accurately describe this dance performance. Art & CULTURE Michal Herman’s “Fellowship” This site-specific creation is a humorously clever dance performance based on Franz Kafka’s short story. This interesting, wild and awakening work is a very entertaining piece of dance theatre. Clipa Theatre, May 21, 10pm [80NIS] Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor’s “Post Martha” Inspired by Edward Albee's "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolf", this performance is a psychological journey that looks into the complex relationship of the infertile Martha and George, as they are confronted by a vivid young couple. The behavior of the characters escalates the tension on stage, as reality and illusion mix constantly up to a boiling point where the fantasy looses its calming impact. Suzanne Dellal, May 22, 9pm [90NIS] Noa Dar Dance Group’s Children’s Play” Intended for children of all ages and based on Pieter Brueghel's masterpiece of the same name, this rich and lively production, which consists of different disciplines such as dance, live music, acting, circus and video, focuses and magnifies the microcosms of the playground. The atmosphere in this playground shifts rapidly between violence, friendship, fantasy and humor. Suzanne Dellal, May 22, 11.30am [70NIS] www.noadar.com
