NI1 STUDENTS’ OPINIONS ABOUT ISSUES RELATED TO EDUCATION

VANESA ACOSTA GARCÍA The topic I have to talk is about if private schools are usually better than state schools. I partly agree with this topic because in my opinion both kinds of schools have good and bad things. First of all, I went to a state school so I don’t know how a private school operates. Although I don’t remember very well all my ages in the school, most of my memories are very good, for example my teacher of Math was quite strict and I believe that it was good for me and my classmates because when we passed to secondary school we knew more things about Math than other of our classmates. In a state school, we can find a greater mix of cultures. Most people believe that it is bad for the children; however this is another good point because it teaches the children the real world. To finish with, I’d like to write that I prefer a state school because I only have to say good things about my experience in one of this so I don’t agree with my topic because I don’t know about private schools. ANA BELÉN LÓPEZ ZABALA There are two kinds of schools in our country: state schools where the education is free and private schools where you have to pay an annual fee. As a result of this, and in my opinion, people who have more money have more opportunities than people who don’t have it. Moreover, on the one hand, I don’t think state education is worse than private education but, actually there are some differences such as: teachers in the state schools have to pass hard exams to get a place in a school. Nevertheless, in the private schools you only have to buy the vacancy and consequently, I think state schools’ teachers have to be qualified and, on the contrary, private schools’ teachers don’t have to. And on the other hands, in private schools children usually wear uniform and in state schools children don’t have to wear it.

To sum up, they both have good and bad features and in my opinion schools in general are like our society, a society that differentiates each person depending on its social and economic status. CARMEN CELDRÁN SÁNCHEZ I partly agree with the fact that boys and girls both learn better in single-sex schools because it depends on the age for several reasons. First of all if they are under 10-12 I think they should study together because it is more rewarding. My second and final point of view is that if they are over 12 or they’re teenagers, they should not study together because they don’t focus on studying since their hormones are revolutionized. CONSUELO MURCIA My opinion about the fact that private schools are usually better than state schools. I totally disagree because I reckon state schools are better than private schools for several reasons. First of all teachers in state schools have passed a public examination, it’s for that I think they are more qualified. Secondly I don’t like the uniforms for children and finally I prefer state education because not everybody can afford private schools because of their fees. FRANCIS ACOSTA The topic I’ve chosen is if school summer holidays should be shorter. I completely disagree because that it is very hot in summer and conditions are not well suited to study. Another important point is that children need a break from studies and do outdoor activities. It is another way of learning. Finally it is necessary to break the routine of school. Summer is for playing, resting, bathing, making new friends. BEGOÑA ACOSTA Physical education should be optional. I completely disagree about this topic because first of all I think P.E. is a necessary subject at elementary school because it provides profits like other subjects.

My second point is about the advantages which P.E. provides to children. For example, it helps to communication between them; it benefits their health and fitness. Another important point is that children need to get away during the school day and P.E. is perfect for it. Finally P.E. teaches children knowledge about our body. ISABEL MARÍA RAMÍREZ The topic I have chosen is “Boys and girls both learn better in single-sex schools”. I completely disagree with this statement. First of all I have to say that boys can learn from girls and vice versa; if they don’t share their school days together they will learn less than other children who study in ordinary schools. Another important point is that children must be ready for living and working in the same society. Society is composed of people from both sexes and we must share our lives with all types of people not only with people of the same sex. Finally, I have to say that several contents that boys study are different from those studied by girls, especially in some subjects like physical education. To give you an example, girls don’t play football or handball and boys don’t do ballet or rhythmic gymnastics. GERAR MARÍN RUIZ I completely disagree with the fact that physical education should be optional. First of all, I think that kids enjoy doing sport at school with their classmates. Moreover, it’s a good way to interact and get to know easily. Apart from this, it’s incredibly important that kids do sport for health reasons. In fact, nowadays there is a huge problem with childhood obesity. If kids don’t do any sport at school, they’ll have health problems when they’re older. And finally, schools should help changing the food habits of their pupils by implementing healthy menus at lunchtime. CONCEPCIÓN PÉREZ SUÁREZ “Cooking and housework should be taught at school” I agree and disagree with this sentence.

I disagree because I don’t think that the school should have a subject as such that is called “housework”, because there are other important files. I reckon that is must be with the family, at home, where these tasks should be learnt. On the other hand, I agree because although there isn’t a subject as such since school children use the corner of symbolic play to mimic the actions of house. In childhood, pupils play in the house and in the kitchen (in the classroom) and become aware of these aspects. LORENZO GARCÍA PÉREZ Physical education should be optional. I completely disagree. I think that P.E. is very important for the development of children, so it should be a compulsory subject. In my opinion children should have a balance between mental and physical education. Of course my advice is that they should always have a balance. Children should study and also must have time to play. JUAN PEÑA Physical education should be optional I totally disagree with this. In my opinion I believe that this subject should be obligatory for all the children between 6 and 16 years, because apart from being very nice to have a healthy lifestyle, it’s very nice for children to relax from other subjects as well, because sometimes the brain needs to rest. On the other hand, there are many lazy children who don’t like doing exercise so if nobody force them, in a future, they might have overweight. FRANCISCO DAVID MÉNDEZ School summer holidays must be shorter Hello! My name is Paco and the topic I have chosen is if school summer holidays should be shorter. First of all, summer time is very warm in Spain and southern countries, however, in North f Europe it’s not so warm and it’s usually rainy and windy, for example, in Ireland. So, for this reason, many people think in these countries that summer holidays should be shorter, only a month or less.

On the other hand, people of southern countries think in a different way: it’s very difficult to study if it’s very warm, then it’s better having long school summer holidays. Another important thing would be that children can do other things and stay with their families, but, the main drawback is that many parents work in summer and they haven’t got enough time for staying with their children. Finally, from my point of view, it’s great having summer holidays, but they would be shorter, one or one and a half month, not more, and it would be full of extra school activities like sports, camps, etc.. Then, it would be better for both: for children because they are busy and they’re learning things in their free time and for their parents that are working. I’m absolutely convinced that it’s the best option. ANIANA PÉREZ SUÁREZ “Schools don’t teach children the important things they need to know to be an adult” Certainly, the schools teach children several things but in my opinion sometimes this isn’t enough. However, nowadays teaching is more oriented to daily life. Besides that, now most schools are bilingual. Therefore, children are more prepared than before. Anyway it is very important to go to the school and to the university too because important things are always learned. AMPARO RODRÍGUEZ MUÑOZ The topic I’ve chosen is if school summer holidays should be shorter. I completely disagree that school summer holidays should be shorter. First of all, the pupils study long hours at school, in addition to spending evenings and weekends doing homework, they also have to revise to pass exams. Therefore, they are very busy. I think that a long break not only is good for relaxing their minds but they also have the opportunity to first relax playing and be children. Another important point is that many children look forward to their holidays to do some summer activities such as sports, travelling or more things to do in their breaks. Finally recent research has shown that a long break makes a healthy, happy mind, due to that, they improve their behavior a lot.

EVA MARÍA CRUZ MUÑOZ Physical education should be optional. The topic I’ve chosen is “physical education should be optional”. I completely disagree because sport is useful for our health, and children should do a lot of sport. First of all, from my point of view, physical education should be compulsory because when children play together, they learn to relate with each other and they learn to do things in groups and it’s very important because when they are older they have to work in groups and they have to know how to do it. My second point is that the most important aspect is that children and people in general should practice more sport because if they practice some sport they will be fitter and their health will be better. Another important point is that children should practice other sports after school because, if they do it, they won’t be bored and they will be fitter. Besides, if children aren’t bored they won’t behave badly and it is fantastic. Besides, when children to do at school, they feel tired and relaxed and they are silenced so teachers can teach without having to punish students. finally, from my point of view, physical education should be compulsory because it has a lot of advantages JUAN ALBERTO OLIVARES Physical education should be optional The reason is because we’re not learning anything useful. if physical education we harder like self-defense, teaching about different eating styles and diets, how your digestive system works and what to do to keep it clean and going, then I think teenagers would love to take exercise up themselves. ANA GÓMEZ DEL AMOR Private schools are usually better than state schools Some differences between state and private schools are obvious. But deciding what’s right for your child entails shedding light on the subtle distinctions many parents ignore.

Why am I so convinced that private education is better? is it the beautiful buildings, steeped in history, the committed teachers, the exam results, the range of extracurricular activities and a lot of advantages? The problem is if you can’t afford about 3,000 euros a year for your children’s education. ANA MARÍA FERNÁNDEZ JIMÉNEZ Hello, my name is Ana and now I am going to talk about the following topic; “Physical education should be optional” First of all, I have to say that I totally disagree with this topic for a few reasons: The main reason is because I believe that physical education should be compulsory. From my point of view “doing sports” at least two or three times a week is extremely important because is good for your health and you can feel better practicing sports. Another important point is that if you practice physical education at school it helps you to keep fit and relax from other subjects like: math or history. Finally, I think that one of the most important subjects at school is physical education and we should fight to make this subject always compulsory. JUANI SÁNCHEZ The topic I’ve chosen is if schools don’t teach children the important things they need to know to be an adult. I partly agree that schools must teach the important things their students need to know to be an adult. First of all, from my point of view education must be in schools and in houses too, because it’s very important that parents teach their children to be a good person and to behave correctly. My second point is that parents must know their children, for example, they know about their friends and if they have any problem at school. Another important point is that teachers can motivate their students and they can have a friendly relationship although a bit strict too. If students are happy with their teachers they’ll learn quicker.

Finally, education is essential the early years in the life of a person and parents must choose the best school for their children. MARÍA ESTHER PICÓN The topic I’ve chosen is “school summer should be shorter”. I completely disagree because children must study very hard during the year of the school and in the summer they have to spend a good time, in which they can practice sports and can entertained doing their hobbies. For example: watching films, going to the beach or swimming pools…therefore, they have to take a long summer holidays because if they don’t take it they will not be able to begin the new course. from my point of view, children have to do homework during the summer, which makes them remember all the subjects and topics, but they must have time for themselves and for their social life, because unless they have a social life, they won’t learn about problems in their lives and won’t be able to study new subjects or a new course. Finally, I think that children have to follow a balanced life for playing, learning and studying. ANA SÁEZ BLAYA The topic I’ve chosen is “physical education should be optional”. I completely disagree with this topic. First of all, the number of fat children has been increasing in the last years, it’s worrying because nowadays they spend much time playing videogames and watching TV instead of playing in the park with friends or doing sport. My second point is that children should know how important sport is for our health. If you teach this, they’ll always remember it. another important point is that doing sport can help to improve your confidence and esteem, teach how to work with a team, and promotes respect in addition to other benefits, not only physical but also psychological. Finally, from my point of view schools should promote much more sport and healthy life, children will thank them. MAXIMILIANO PÉREZ Cooking and housework should be taught at school

I disagree with it. In my opinion cooking and housework should be taught at home. When you go to school, teachers should teach different subjects, for example history, maths, literature…that will be important for you, when you go to the university in the future. From my point of view, when children are in their houses, their parents have the obligation to teach them, for example, to do the ironing, cooking… A few years ago, children learnt some things that nowadays aren’t important for their future studies. FULGENCIO GARCÍA Boys and girls both learn better in single-sex schools First of all, in my opinion the boys and girls should be learning together in a school because it’s the best way to help them to be more sociable. Another important point is that in the future when students have a new job if they have studied only in single-sex schools, they’ll have problems. In fact, I completely disagree that the boys and girls learn better in single-sex schools. MARÍA ASUNCIÓN GALINDO My speech is about education Why would I send my children to a state school? Education, is quiet important for me because it´s the foundation of a society. That´s why I´d like to compare state and private schools and let you know what I think about it. First of all, for state schools you need to have less budget and parents can afford it. The school fees are cheap. Also, it is easier to join than in a private school and lunch and sleep are cheaper than a private school too. Besides, you don´t have to wear a uniform and the teachers have more level than in the private school. There are less rules and no flag day as well. On the other hand, in a state school there are less facilities and exist racial, ethnic and religion tensions. In addition, there is less discipline and parents in general give less education in home as well as skipping class is easier.

To sum up, in my opinion we must defend a state school system, so, it will be the best way to learn. PRISCILA GARCĂ?A From my point of view private schools are better for these reasons. First of all students of a private school and state study the same things and at the same time but the only difference is the way of teaching .A good example for this is that in a private school teachers force you to study. However, in a state school you study if you want because nobody forces you to study. In addition in a private school all is organized from the very beginning, from the time classes start, the way to behave in class, the cloths that you can put on. I feel that this way to teach is the correct one because when you are hard-working you get good results. Many people say that state schools are bad because teachers are younger and with no experience and they need more experience with the pupils, as I see it .
