EDITOR’S note Growing up in a country where Santa Clause wears board shorts and sunscreen, holiday time in New York City never ceases to move me. There is something magical about those first few flurries that descend upon the streets of Manhattan, signaling that the holiday season has officially begun. Granted, I don’t always love the slushy aftermath of a snowstorm, but for those first few days, it seems as if all is right with the world. From there, I hop a plane to Australia where summer is in full swing and I celebrate the holiday season with family and friends. Wherever you may be this holiday season, we wish you all the very best and look forward to celebrating 2014 in style.

RESOLUTION

NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT TO PLOT YOUR STYLE FUTURE

The New Year gives us all a chance to start over, particularly when it comes to our own personal style, but why wait? With the festive season upon us, we explore some of our reader’s most pressing style resolutions and ask some of our favorite fashionistas what they’ll be striving for in 2014.

what’s your st yle resolution? SH ARE IT WITH US ON TWITTER @HHHEE Ls #STYLE14

The higher the heel the closer to heaven. However, if your New Year’s style resolution is to ‘pump it up’ then aim for a heel with a significant platform. This will reduce the “pitch” or “slope” of the heel to give you the height you’re looking for without the making you feel as if you’re walking on stilts. A great example is this fabulous London Trash Ceres heel in yellow, available at Heels.com.

I WANT TO ADD MORE COLOR Black. It’s slimming, it goes with everything and we have a wardrobe full of it, but it may be time to add a little color to our lives. Accessories are the perfect way to spice up your look without feeling conspicuous. Try something like this Cambridge Flouro Satchel to get you in the swing of things, available at Shopbop.com.

I WANT TO TRAVEL LIGHTER Whether it’s for work or pleasure, packing can be daunting task. Unless you’re traveling by private jet however, being able to pack light will take you from tourist to jet setter status in seconds. The key is to cover all bases in under four shoes. Here’s how we do it: 1 x flip flops, 1 x sneakers, 1 x high heels and wear one pair of boots. It may seem minimalist but sailing through an airport is far chicer than struggling.

ONE by Hale Bob suitcase, Shopbop.com

I WANT TO WEAR HIGHER HEELS

I WANT TO BE EDGIER Before you commit to that ink sleeve, let’s explore how you can get an edgier look that can be swapped out with the seasons. A few studs go a long way as does any sort of hardware, skulls and chains, so an elaborate cuff or oversized ring could be the key to your edgier look without having to invest in a whole new wardrobe. For us, we feel pretty invincible wearing this Alexander McQueen Skull Enamel ring, available at CoutureZappos.com.

I WANT TO BE MORE COMFORTABLE

1. If the shoe doesn’t fit, don’t buy it. Simple yet important advice to remember.

Even our greatest high heel icons—from Victoria Beckham to Sarah Jessica Parker—are favoring flats of late. It’s true, years of abuse can take its toll but you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. If you’ve been squeezing into the wrong sized shoe to pick up a bargain, then 2014 may be your year for high heel reform. Here are three ways to be comfortably chic.

2. Differentiate between an all-day and a special occasion shoe. Having a more substantial block heel, ankle support and well constructed shoe will make a world of difference. Keep the killer stilettos for car-to-bar occasions. 3. Repair or toss. Decide if your shoes are worth repairing or replacing.

DREAM LOVER

VERA MEIJWAARD

“For me design is about creating stories. The human need for fairy tales remains substantial. People want to identify themselves with things that are greater than life.” Meet designer Vera Meijwaard, whose fantasy worthy shoes have been playing a major part in our recent sartorial daydreams. The Dutch artist spent time in high school dabbling in various forms of art including painting, sculpting and even designing a dress for one of her final exams. It wasn’t until she started visiting art schools in preparation for college that she decided design was her calling; and since studying Product Design at the ArtEZ Academy of the Arts in Arnhem and Shoe Craft and Design at the Dutch HealthTec Academy in Utrecht, Meijwaard has been creating footwear that is both visually bold and backed by big ideas. “My biggest inspiration is in excess; in nature, people or stories consisting of so many elements you cannot read them at a glance,” says Meijwaard. “[My designs are inspired by] things from real life that play with your imagination. That playful nature is on full display in her most recent collection, Renaissance of the Abundance, which is full of white and black shoes that are both structurally futuristic and luxuriously dreamy—one featuring a cage of multi-layered straps, others boasting dome-like side coverings and thick platforms that elevate a simple strappy heel into a work of art. “I designed a collection that leads on to a renaissance of extravagance and luxury,” says Meijwaard. “I tried to stress the mental importance of the visual dream. Dreams have an uplifting and comforting effect as they

rise above the everyday world... and with dreams there always remains something to be desired.” This freedom of expressing abstract ideas in her designs, is thanks in no small part to Meijwaard’s insistence that wear-ability does not factor into her creative process. During the design process, I am looking for a perfect shape that ultimately needs to fit around the foot. “When you are concerned with wear-ability it will have a direct impact on your design freedom, forcing you to do constant concessions,” says Meijwaard. “Your final design will then always be a toned down version of the image that you actually had in mind… I judge the quality of my design by the accuracy of lines and proportions.” It is with this discerning eye that Meijwaard turns toward her future in the industry, as she delves into setting up her own unisex accessories label, in partnership with her boyfriend, VISSER & MEIJWAARD. Besides that, Meijwaard is also hard at work on a new shoe collection and planning several collaborations with various companies, one of which will take her as far from home as China, where she will design for a “big shoe label.” Still, Meijwaard isn’t one to plan too far ahead of the creative curve. “I live in the moment and I have no idea what my life will look like in a year,” she says. “I am proud of my work but I am far from satisfied. I’ve only just started and in each new project I try to improve myself and to get the most out of it. I have only ‘made it’ when there is nothing more to learn and I [hope] that day never comes.” — KERRI JAREMA

Trust that your impeccable taste won’t fail you now ladies. If you’re still unsure as to what to buy for him, use our five gift giving rules as your starting point for holiday shopping. — NIGEL ISAIAH FIVE RULES FOR BUYING FOR HIM Alexander McQueen Velvet Bowtie

1. Don’t be scared to take fashion risks. Somebody needs to be responsible for adding more than graphic tees to his wardrobe. 2. Do take advantage of his friend’s knowledge. Just as you would dread a knock off pair of Manolo’s (that are two sizes too big) he probably won’t appreciate a fake jersey that fits like a crop top. 3. Don’t give up fast and go the gift card route. Trust us, he will appreciate the effort, even if you miss the mark slightly. 4. Do take couples gifts into consideration as long as he’s put first. Take him to his favorite restaurant and pick up the bill or buy him tickets to a sporting game. Sometimes the best gifts are showing that you can have fun spending time with him in his domain.

5. Don’t skip on gift wrapping. It may not seem like the most manly embellishment but taking the extra time to add your personal touch shows how much you care.

STEPPING OUT SAFA SAHIN

Meet Safa Sahin—footwear designer, painter and photographer, an all round renaissance man whose inspiration is as wide as his artistic vocabulary. From the characters of novels to colorful insects, this Turkish designer is inspired by a variety of elements that turn the mundane into high heel magic. An accomplished footwear designer, Sahin completed a unique two-year shoe design course at TASEV (TÜRKIYE AYAKKABICILAR SEKTÖRÜ EGITIM VAKFI) which provided the technical foundation for his highly elaborate designs. Having worked with larger shoe companies before branching out on his own, Sahin is the first to admit one of his greatest challenges is to sell the concept of his creations. “During the design process for my 2013/2014 collections, the shoe companies that I know very well, left me alone,” explains Sahin. “But when I decide to design a new concept shoe, the greatest challenge is to convince others. Generally, nobody accepts my new design idea.“ Far from being discouraged, this initial rejection spurs Sahin on to create

something truly extraordinary. “I like them to be surprised,” says Sahin. And indeed they are. With five personal exhibitions under his belt throughout the U.S., Italy and Turkey, Sahin’s desire to create something unique far outweighs the initial setback of any objections he may encounter. Winner of the Detay Leather Competition of Shoe design and Trendsetter Magazine Handbag Design Competition, he has attracted a global following who view his work as a mixture of art, design and fashion. “A pair of shoes is an art object,” says Sahin. “That is why it makes the wearer want to own it.” Favoring polyester, wood and washed leathers, Sahin’s designs make everyday objects come to life with creations such as the “Cupcake,” “Whipped Cream,” “Stalactite” and “Butterfly Pump.” Currently a senior studying Fine Arts, it’s obvious Sahin has a lot more to offer the design world, with a solid technical foundation and an eye for design, we look forward to seeing what the future holds for Safa Sahin. —ANGELA GILLTRAP

ALL THAT shimmers

JORGE ADELER

Jorge Adeler’s journey started in Argentina in 1975. Having just relocated to the United States with his wife and two young daughters, Adeler was looking to exercise his entrepreneurial skills. But with limited space—just one closet in the house—he had to think on a small scale. “I didn’t have any experience in jewelry but I knew that I was going to travel to South America and pick an item that I was going to start working with,” says Adler. “It could have been furs, sweaters, wine… but looking at my actual capacity, a closet does not inspire a lot of enthusiasm for a wine collection.” After traveling to the mountains of Argentina and making his first trade of “trinkets and fish hooks” Adeler found his calling. “That type of forced initiation was a very difficult way to start a business,” recalls Adeler. “But it was what opened me up to a world of gems that was fascinating and unique.” It is Adeler’s immersion in the world of his materials that makes his jewelry truly special, and since his first trading trip in Argentina the designer has sourced diamonds in Israel, traversed Columbian emerald mines, searched for pearls in the Philippines and gathered meteorites in Russia, all in attempt to create jewelry from the very best precious stones from around the world. “I developed a real passion for traveling and that led to a full involvement with the philosophy

and the culture for each gem,” says Adeler. “[It is important to me] to go directly to the source to create a unique story.” The latest chapter in that story has produced a collection of Sea, Earth and Sky, bringing together pearls, precious gems and meteorites in unique pieces that range from the classically pretty to luxuriously edgy. “I’m trying to break the mold of fashion looks, working with colors and shapes that are unconventional,” says Adler. “Of course, I’m not the only designer who is venturing into this field, but it is not yet [part of the] mainstream in America. It’s still considered edgy, and is limited to certain pockets of high fashion.” At the center of everything, of course, is the woman who will wear Adeler’s creations, the reason the designer’s eye for creative design and attention to detail is of the utmost importance. “[My jewelry is for] somebody who is sophisticated, who can appreciate something that no one else has,” says Adeler. “It is for someone with a strong personality, who has absolutely no problem wearing something that is a conversation starter.” With this being the season for all that shimmers and shines, we can’t think of a better time to add one of Adeler’s incredible jewels to your collection. Just be prepared to turn a few heads wherever your adventure may take you. — KERRI JAREMA
