EDITOR’S LETTER It was September 4th, 2012. Perched high above the city in my hotel room in Switzerland, I worked through the night to finish the first issue of Heaven Has Heels magazine. I distinctly remember the gigantic bed, made with crisp white linens and luxurious comforter. The urge to crawl under the covers and sleep. And the strength I had to muster when, having finshed, my computer crashed and I had to start over. Twice. Switzerland was my last stop before heading home to New York. I had just completed an exhausting trip covering eleven cities in six days— including three countries in twenty-four hours—to talk about the power of digital media with CEOs, CFOs and whoever would listen. With every presentation, I re-iterated my philosophy: “Create amazing content and they

will come.” And they did. My initial projections for that first issue were 10,000 impressions. It was a highly ambitious number for an independent, digitalonly publication about something as niche (and fabulous!) as shoes. But I was willing to wait and grow a community of like-minded individuals whose standards were as high as their heels. Within two weeks, we had hit 200,000 impressions. By our third issue; we had 11 million impressions and the attention of the world’s largest online news stand Issuu.com. Within a year, we had grown from a quarterly publication to a monthly magazine, with three times more content than that of our original September issue. I’m so proud of everything that we’ve accomplished these last two years. For me, Heaven Has Heels has

always been about building a platform that supports, empowers and promotes those innovative designers, behind-the-scenes players and independent creatives who create products that allow us to express who we are and what we stand for. From vegan shoe brand Beyond Skin to the jaw dropping designs of The Shoise Initiative of Sweden, there are shoemakers, designers and innovators in every corner of the globe creating a slice of history. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who have ever read, shared, laughed and loved this little magazine-that-could. It is a labor of love that continues to challenge and inspire me to do more, be more and step up my shoe game. Until next time... May your heels always be as high as your standards,

contributors We had an amazing time shooting our Fall Cover Shoot (pg. 40) in New York City with the lovely, Emily Sweet from Red NYC Models. One of our all-time favorite photographers, the talented Jason Setiawan came up with this great idea to use box cut-outs to frame each image creating a multi-layered look that highlighted the accessories featured in each shot. Fashion stylist Nakima Simone Benjamin came on board to produce these great looks with long time contributor Brandie Hopstein doing an amazing job with hair and makeup. Our Editor-In-Chief Angela Gilltrap and Style Editor, Nigel Isaiah lent a hand, literally holding the boxes in place for a cover-worthy shoot. We caught up with some of the team to talk fall favorites. Check out more of their work at JasonSetiawan.com, BrandieHopstein. com and NakimaBenjamin.Viewbook.com.

Looking for expert advise on vintage shopping? Decades Founder and Co-Owner, Cameron Silver, shares HIS TOP THREE tips to make your next hunt for vintage goods a success.

1 2

Don’t get seduced my a label. Even great designers of yesteryear made some ugly clothes. Focus on quality and condition. It’s necessary to really examine a potential purchase to make sure it’s wearable since old stains and reweaving can be prohibitive to repair.

3

Simple alterations shouldn’t be a distraction from something you love: a fallen hem or open seam can easily be fixed. Vintage is really green so tailoring a garment to have longevity in your wardrobe isn’t a bastardizing of the design unless it’s historically relevant. — DecadesInc.com

IN HER SHOES WHEN WE GROW UP WE WANT TO BE SHARA HAYZ.

to the raver, Shara Hayz has been outfitting the fabulous since launching her eponymous label in 2012. Known for her signature styling, which happens to include LED electronics, lycra and bold digital prints, Hayz has been the designer of choice for the style curious.

surprised by the amount of press and interest that my designs gained,” says Hayz. “I have never had to go out and sell what I’m doing, people have just come to me, and this has been a great incentive to carry on. It has given me more confidence in the knowledge that I’m doing something that people want to buy into.”

“From day one I was always

Hayz’ recent commission—

to design an outfit for a Vogue Magazine shoot photographed by Mario Testino— is yet another testament to her bold fashion aesthetic; a dash of 1950s Sci-Fi, a spoonful of ‘80s electonica and a love of ancient civilizations. But it’s Hayz herself that adds the secret ingredient to her unique designs that follow their own trajectory. “I was always a little bit antiestablishment,” says Hayz. “I liked something a little more alternative. I remember seeing images of the British designer Pam Hogg and her work in early issues of ID magazine and being in awe of how rock’n’ roll she was as a designer. I’m still inspired by her work and how she has achieved success in the mainstream creative fashion world.” Hayz is well on her way to surpassing her idol with celebrities such as Lara Stone and the Scissor Sister’s Ana Matronic rocking her designs. Most recently, it was Rihanna that was up for a little Hayz action on her reality show Styled to Rock. The East London based designer beat 2000 entrants to present her collection to the recent CFDA Style Icon winner, something Hayz counts as among her greatest career moments to date. Next up, it’s the catwalks of London Fashion Week calling with a hotly anticipated collection of ready-to-wear and bespoke pieces ready to hit the runway. “I love seeing people dressed up in interesting, colorful, outfits, people with character and a hint of attitude are my inspiration.” SharaHayz.com — ANGELA GILLTRAP

SHATTERED DESIGNER NAIMA MORYS BREAKS THE ICE.

I

t’s no surprise that designer Naima Morys counts ice and glass among her greatest design influences. Her luxury-inspired collection combines the finest leathers with the latest CAD technology to produce mesmerizing designs inspired by shattered glass, ice, architecture and body modification such as the “golden lotus feet” phenomenon. Ask the designer herself, and she will describe her aesthetic as hard, edgy, cold, sculptural and sophisticated. “I actually have quite a thing with jellyfish and even the Disney film Frozen,” says the London College of Fashion graduate. “I can never predict what my inspiration will be, but I know when it hits me. I see a whole new collection in front of my eyes within seconds.” Morys’ design philosophy is to bring luxurious, sophistication to the forefront of technological design. This means a lot of experimentation and perseverance. “Sometimes it’s only the time,” says Morys of her design challenges. “Sometimes it’s the cost and sometimes, everything comes together. There are so many things to take into consideration.”

“When you design a shoe, you are looking for the smallest piece to make it look perfect. It can take time,” explains Morys. “After having found the right design one needs to find the right technology to get it to work. In my case, I utilized Rhino 3D and a 3D printer to create my heel units and wedges for this collection.” It’s a frustrating process of trial and error that Morys knows well, having created this collection on a student budget. When you’re short on money and time, a little guest-imation and ingenuity go a long way. “Sometimes you can’t physically create a piece, therefore you need to experiment and be open minded to learn new processes and programs,” she says. “Will cork work? A hard foam? Polyurophen or will it be nylon? After checking all my options, I used nylon as it was the best and lightest solution. The downside to this, was the time I spent and the cost. But then, once the actual final product is finished, you know it was worth it and you forget about all the little hiccups along the way.” — JULIA STUART

BATTER UP THE ERA OF THE HYDRAULIC HEEL IS HERE THANKS TO SILVIA FADO.

“Since the first pair I made, I knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” For Silvia Fado, footwear is more than a vocation, it’s a calling. With a background in architecture and knitwear, Fado found a way to combine her talents for the greater heeled good. “I have always loved shoes and in them is everything I like— creativity from fashion, structural development from architecture and my passion for footwear,” says the London College of Fashion graduate.

Her intriguing Kinetic Traces collection explores both the relationship between the movement of the body and fashion footwear design and high performance sports footwear and body movement. “I wanted to create something really strong that would contribute something new to the footwear world,” says Fado. “Developing heels at an engineering level is difficult and it would not have been possible without the help of my industrial partners.”

SILVIAFADO.COM

Fado enlisted a team of experts to achieve her final vision. As they say, it takes a village and in this case, one of highly talented industry leaders. An architect: to help her study the interacting forces in the structure of the high heeled shoe during movement. A photographer: who made it possible to see the continuous movement broken down into individual parts as a diagram. An engineer: to develop these mechanisms and an industrial partner to enable production of the final product. All of this, stemming from Fado’s analysis of the comfort elements in footwear, particularly impact absorption, shoe weight, traction (the relationship between shoe and surface) and upper durability. “Kinetic Traces, is about creating comfortable heels. I created hydraulic heels to absorb the impact during motion getting a considerable improvement in comfort in a fashion context,” says Fado. Fado combined traditional footwear manufacturing techniques (leather work, traditional machinery making, metal work, wood shaping) with rapid prototyping (3D milling machine, laser cutting and 3D printing) to create a truly revolutionary heel that for Fado, represents femininity, self confidence, history and beauty. “I want the wearer to feel comfortable, beautiful, modern and strong,” she says. At the forefront of innovative design, we’re looking forward to taking the hydraulic heel for a test run. “I have been always interested in clever and functional design,” says Fado. And on behalf of heavenly heel wearers everywhere we thank you. — J.S.

BRIDGED MORE HATS ON HEADS. It was love at first sight when we spied Keely Hunter’s Fall 2014 collection, Thermal Bridge. The talented milliner is known for her use of unique materials and head turning silhouettes and this collection is no different. We caught up with Britain’s Bright Young Thing to talk style, inspiration and heavenly headwear. How did you get started in millinery? I’ve always been interested in hats and heads. I think it may have something to do with my mother being a hairdresser. I started by interning for various couture/fashion milliners to begin with and then underwent training at Kensington & Chelsea college, which has a renowned millinery course. After that, I assisted accessories designer Fred Butler for a number of seasons and from there, I started out on my own. What do you love about designing hats compared to fashion or other product design? I love the constructive side that millinery has, it’s like sculpture or architecture. You have to do a lot of creative planning and designing to create something that appeals to the eye but is also designed to be wearable, balancing on the head appropriately and having the right symmetry for the wearer. What materials do you most like to work with? I work with a range of materials, combining traditional millinery techniques with new materials and technologies. In the last few collections I’ve worked with lots of different plastics but this is continually evolving—I’m always interested in what’s new.

Your Thermal Bridge collection is amazing; did you have to experiment with different techniques to see your vision come to life? A collection always begins with a huge amount of experimenting. This season I wanted to incorporate more soft materials and texture into the collection so I worked with knits for the first time and some more textured felts. What have been your biggest challenge to date both in business and design? The biggest challenge is showing people that millinery can be an accessible, modern part of contemporary fashion. It’s a craft with a long tradition but it’s also one that can be daring and forward thinking. Has there ever been a moment when you’ve thought, ‘ah, I’ve made it’? No, I think it’s the hunger for more that keeps pushing your boundaries and drives you forward. But if I had to pick one moment that was a real marker in my career, it was probably being named one of Selfridges’ Bright Young Things last year and being selected by Stephen Jones and The British Fashion Council to take part in their Headonism initiative. What does the future hold for Keely Hunter Millinery? More hats on heads.

BEJWELED

AN ENCOUNTER OF FASHION AND ARCHITECTURE.

I

n 2007, architect Elinor Avni closed her interior design firm to create jewelry—a passion she discovered when her partner, artist Tammar Edelman began studying jewelry making. “At a certain point I understood this is what I want to do,” says Avni. With that, Noritamy was born. Modern yet classic, Noritamy is described by it’s co-founders as a fascinating encounter of fashion and architecture. It’s architecturally inspired lines and fashion inspired embellishments mean this jewelry is as stunning as it is unique. Working with a variety of materials, from high end metals to wood and fabric, Noritamy’s designs quickly caught the attention of fashion lovers as features in everything from Vogue to the Wall Street Journal began to appear. “Each time we think we achieved something nice, something nicer comes along,” says Avni. “We feel very

fortunate.” Fortune may play a part in this brand’s success but it’s hard work that makes Noritamy stand out in a highly competitive marketplace. “Jewelry has always played a big role in women’s lives and will always do,” says Avni. “A good piece of jewelry has power, it can make an outfit; enhance a personality.” While the focus will continue to be on jewelry, there is plenty in the works for Noritamy. “We have a premium line in progress and we are developing our accessories line as well,” says Avni. Travel, kids, managing your own business... Avni admits it’s not always easy but it’s worth it. “I dream of a day that I keep busy only with designing new styles and flying off to present them,” says Avni. “I sense that day is closer than ever.” — ANASTASIA RUBIN

innovation WELCOME TO THE FUTURE OF FASHION. Sleepless nights may be a thing of the past thanks to the creative minds at Philip Stein as they introduce their newest piece of wearable technology; the revolutionary Sleep Bracelet. We caught up with co-founder Rina Stein to talk wearable technology. How did the concept of the Philip Stein Sleep Bracelet come about? Philip Stein’s innovative Natural Frequency Technology in watches and bracelets is designed to help individuals cope with stress, improve focus and increase overall wellbeing. After the tremendous global success of the watches and fashion accessories with the wellness technology for day use, Philip Stein is ready to conquer one of the most critical aspects of living a life to its fullest potential, and that is sleep. The Philip Stein Sleep Bracelet has been shown to help wearers fall asleep naturally and wake more refreshed. Was there a great deal of product development involved melding form and

function? The most important detail in creating the Philip Stein sleep bracelet was combining comfort and practicality. While holding true to the luxurious aesthetic of Philip Stein, the Sleep Bracelet is designed to be an understated piece of jewelry that easily conforms to a person’s sleep needs. How important is it to get a good night’s sleep? Sleep is one of the crucial pillars to overall health and wellbeing. A good night’s sleep is the key to a more productive, more inspired, and more fulfilled life. When your body is able to sleep restfully and in essence recharge its batteries, the ability to reach its fullest potential is maximized. Whether you are preparing for an important business meeting, training for peak performance, concentrating at work, keeping a busy travel schedule or handling stressful situations a good night sleep is crucial. How does the Philip Stein Sleep Bracelet work? All Philip Stein products contain our

unique Natural Frequency Technology disc. Each disc is accurately calibrated to act like an antenna, picking up only the beneficial natural frequencies that help to fulfill a particular need. In this case, it is frequencies that are associated with sleep. As a result, wearers may fall asleep faster naturally and wake refreshed. Have you noticed a significant growth in wearable technology? The wearable technology market is expanding in huge ways. The

most dominate sector being healthcare, which includes fitness, medical and wellbeing. As a society, wearable technology allows us to incorporate our personal needs with our on-the-go lifestyle. However, the main difference between our products and those which are generally known as wearable technology, is that our technology functions naturally and is effortless. It does not require daily maintenance and information input; it simply requires you to wear it. — PhilipStein. com

CLOSET ENVY

YOUR DREAM CLOSET EXISTS, MEET THE LADY WHO OWNS IT. “I never used that clutch,” says Roemer, on a call from her home in Texas. “I never even took it out of its wrapping. I didn’t want the leather to oxidize. I was just so proud to own it; to have worked so hard to have afforded it.” The clutch is now one of many that are circulated on the bottom floor of her three storey, 3,000 foot closet that plays host to friends, family and a host of charity fundraisers.

There are some people you immediately like, Theresa Roemer is one of those people. The entrepreneur and philanthropist may own America’s largest closet, but she is far from the entitled socialite one might expect. This is a woman who works hard, plays hard and happens to appreciate fashion—and the soothing affects of color coordination. Raised on a ranch in Nebraska, Roemer’s humble beginnings may be the key to her self-effacing nature. When her family moved to the city as a young girl, it was Roemer who bussed tables, mowed lawns and delivered newspapers to pay her way and eventually save up for the tiny Louis Vuitton clutch she still has in her closet.

“I’ve always had beautiful closets and over the years they seem to have grown bigger and bigger,” she says. “Whenever friends would come around they would ask to see my closet so I thought why not make it a place where we can hold functions and do some good?” For Roemer, clothes may make the man but a woman’s closet is a reflection of who they are. It’s not about labels, but about organization. “I need to see it, or I won’t wear it,” says Roemer. Who, despite what you may think, never has trouble picking out what outfit or accessory to

wear, despite the seemingly endless choices. “No one appreciates the dollar more than I do,” says Roemer. “If I spend $60,000 on a purse it’s either an investment item, something my daughter will inherit or an item that will be auctioned for charity. For me, it’s no different than collecting art.” This fashion-lovers collection includes heavenly heels signed by designers such as Christian Louboutin and my personal favorite, a champagne bar from which to sit back and enjoy it all. The real question that’s on my mind: If you have so many beautiful things, is there ever a time you slouch around in sweat pants? “Oh my goodness yes, nothing is better than sitting in the middle of my closet in sweat pants. Having a pity party.” Yes, even fabulous fashionistas sometimes get the blues. But you can bet this inspiring entrepreneur also has it in magenta and teal. — ANGELA GILLTRAP

HOLD ON

WHY THE HUMBLE CLUTCH HAS BECOME THE ULTIMATE SIGN OF LUXURY. I haven’t always lived in New York City. I was born and raised on the beaches of Australia where my primary means of transport was my trusty convertible, lovingly known as Tracy. Tracy was loaded up with everything I needed to see me through an emergency— social or otherwise. Ten years ago, I swapped it all for a six-floor walk-up in Harlem and despite the obvious differences; the one thing that became glaringly evident was the need for an organized, well-packed handbag and the strength to carry it. My first magazine job in New York City was Devil Wears Prada meets Survivor. The trouble with all of these shows, however, is that they never show the “reality” of being in this industry. They don’t show the part where the glamourous editor struggles home after a 14hour day, through crowded sidewalks of city streets lugging several bottles of gifted liquor, numerous magazines and enough mascara to last a lifetime.

HEAVEN HAS HEELS september 2014

Trust me, your fashionable strut is quickly replaced by a determined charge, complete with wrinkleinducing frown, as you desperately try to duck and weave through crowds with what could be enough merchandise to open you own pop-up store. Combine this, with an already overpacked, giant handbag that contained everything it could possibly hold— from an emergency pair of flats to a laptop—and life is, well, not quite so glamorous. The fact is minimalism screams affluence. Whether it’s interiors, fine dining or fashion. For the privileged of this world, extra baggage is not something lugged on either shoulder. It is something ferried by The Help to your waiting car, where your driver is directed to drop you off, at the door of your building, where yet another staff member ensures your packages are delivered safely. That’s why the clutch is so alluring. It holds only the essentials. It implies

that you had the luxury of dressing for the occasion, rather than racing with all your belongings directly from a long day at the office. Matching accessories (particularly in iridescent shades) suggest that you own many, many items. One for every occasion, color and trend. And even scarier, have them in an easily accessible closet that is probably bigger than most Manhattan apartments. The clutch has become the ultimate sign of luxury in the City That Never Sleeps simply because it’s petite and stylish. You will never have to dumpsterhandbag-dive to find your phone. You won’t knock over a glass of champagne on your way out. You will, be alluringly elegant. So next time you want to make a good impression, leave the Mary Poppins bag at home and transform yourself from pack horse to power player. — ANGELA GILLTRAP

FINAL BOW

WHY THE SNEAKER TREND HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING. When the sneaker fad begins to fade, Nike Air Force 1s will withstand the test of time. In 1982 they were introduced in a white and silver color-way as the “Nike Air Force” and quickly became the “it” shoe of the Hip-Hop world. Embraced by all who considered themselves a part of the culture, these were the Louboutins of the urban community, highly sought after as a status symbol. Now a premier lifestyle sneaker with over 1700 different variations; songs dedicated to them by Grammy Award winning artist Nelly and Kanye West, and stamps of approval by designers taking their final fashion week bow, Air Force 1s have built the foundation to be considered fashion’s ultimate “it” kicks. “I own about 125 pairs of the same Nike Air Force 1s,” says Givenchy’s Artistic Director Riccardo Tisci according to online luxury retailer Net-A-Porter. Prior to his collaboration with Nike in January of 2014 Tisci has been a long time Air Force 1s wearer. Since October 2011, when the Spring 2012 Ready-To-Wear collections showed in Paris, Riccardo has consistently taken his bow at the end of Givenchy’s

RTW runway wearing a T-shirt, jeans and low top white-onwhite Nike Air Force 1s. “You can check my fashion shows for Givenchy, in total there’s let’s say, 100 shows. Seventy or eighty percent of the time, I came out at the end of the show rocking a pair of whiteon-white Air Force 1s. I have changed jeans, T-shirts and shirts for this moment, but my shoes have always been the white Nikes,” Riccardo Tisci told PH Camy in an interview

with Highsnobiety.com. In fact, he’s only swapped his signature low tops in February for his Fall 2014 runway show, to match recording artist Robin Rihanna Fenty. Both, wore his Nike RT collaboration Air Force Ones that were released this past March. Tisci isn’t the only designer to sport the classic white “Uptowns” (a popular nickname for Air Force 1s) at the end of his runway show nor is he the first designer

to recognize the sneaker as a fashion statement and ignite an athletic footwear frenzy. CFDA member and award winning designer Phillip Lim has worn Nike 1’s at three, out of the four, runway shows. Even online luxury retail destinations have taken note of the Air Force 1s on the feet of influential designers, both MyTheresa.com and StyleBop. com currently carry the sneaker. And if you’re still puzzled by the fact that a designer’s personal wardrobe can trigger a trend, Danielle Prescod’s analysis on how Adidas Sneakers Became A Fashion Girl “Thing” on Elle.com, traces the current Stan Smith craze back to Phoebe Philo, who wore a pair during the showing of Celine’s Fall 2011 collection. It’s up in the air on whether the fashion industry will develop an unconditional love for a crisp pair of white Nike Air Force 1s. One thing is for sure though, if Philo’s Adidas can make a huge impact in fashion, then endorsements from runway icons Tisci and Lim can set Nike up as the next pair of sneakers the fashion industry swoons over as an everlasting footwear staple. — NIGEL ISAIAH

honesty hour BATTLE OF THE SEXES: IF YOUR HEELS MAKE YOU TALLER THAN YOUR DATE DO YOU WEAR THEM & DOES HE CARE?

H ER SAY

“I don’t date men short enough to be shorter than me in heels. Note: Currently available for tall men dates.” — Jemima, Stylist “For me, my favorite heels are special occasion shoes. If the occasion calls for them I’m wearing them, date or no date. I would hope any guy I’m dating would be so excited to be with me at that occasion that he wouldn’t care if I was a little taller than him that night.” — Louise, Public Relations

HIS SAY

“That wouldn’t bother me at all—I encourage that. Tall is beautiful and I easily forget the height difference.” — Daniel, CEO “ I love a tall girl, so it doesn’t worry me.” Ricky, Performer “I really don’t care if a woman is taller than me in heels. A real woman is interesting in every way. If she’s happy I am even happier.” — Manuel, Police Officer “I think it’s fine, within reason. I mean having to strain your neck to make eye contact could be considered awkward.” — Adam, Electrician

“Of course! My date has got to be comfortable with me at any height—and in any situation.” Casey, Creative Consultant “I date men because I enjoy a good laugh! I wear high heels because they are the modern girls’ diamonds!” — Toni, Teacher

According to the Guiness Book of Records, the highest heels commercially available are boots boasting a combination of 17 inch (43 cm) platforms and 20 inch (51 cm) heels, produced by James Syiemiong (India) for BoldnBootiful.com in February 2004.

THE STYLIST WEIGHS IN... Alison Stewart, Fashion Stylist and Editor-in-Chief of StyleWhipped.com, weighs in on when to bring out the big guns. “Being 4’11” I would really never have the dilemma of being anywhere near taller than my 6’3” boyfriend! However, as a personal stylist, I think tall women should always be proud of their height, but also wait until the relationship is a bit established before they purposely tower over someone. So maybe pull out the 4-inch heels for the first (or even fourth) date, but save the 6-inches until he feels 100% secure in his role as ‘the guy’ around you. And then wear whatever makes you feel hot...because your confidence will make him think you are too.”

“I want to go and go, and then drop dead in the middle of something I’m loving to do. And if that doesn’t happen, if I wind up sitting in a wheelchair, at least I’ll have my high heels on.” — Dolly Parton

GEMS

FINE JEWELRY DESIGNER JESSICA SURLOFF TAKES US INTO THE WORLD OF PRECIOUS STONES.

It’s considered a geoscience; a branch of mineralogy that deals with natural and artificial gems and gemstones, but it wasn’t until the turn of the century—1908 to be precise—that the first gemologist qualifications were instigated by the National Association of Goldsmiths of Great Britain (NAG). Soon after, the first U.S. graduate of Gem-A’s Diploma Course, Robert Shiply, established both the Gemological Institue of American and the American Gem Society. Today, there are numerous institutions offering gemology courses around the world, but what does it mean

HEAVEN HAS HEELS september 2014

to be a gemologist? We asked New York gemologist and fine jewelry designer Jessica Surloff. What made you interested in gemology? I have a natural passion and love for all things from nature. This, of course, includes gemstones. I think it’s an amazing thing that these precious stones, in all these awesome colors, come from the earth. They start as rocks that are mined and cut into beautiful gemstones, each with special properties and qualities. Are there many women in the field? I think that more and more women are joining the field. As a designer and gemologist, how

do you source your gems? Most gemstones can be found right here in New York City, although a dream of mine is to go to Burma to source. What are you looking for when you choose your gems? I am always looking for superior quality in a stone. Color and cut go hand in hand. For that, we need to rely on talented lapidaries (i.e. specialists in stone cutting). They can entice certain qualities from various stones. When designing jewelry, which comes first, the design or the gem? I have in the last year, always started with the gemstone to design a piece. I may have the

stone at my bench for awhile before I know what to make. What’s one thing not many people know about being a gemologist? Something people may not know about being a gemologist is that there is science to it. Gemology is a part of geology. Identifying “rough” (uncut) stones is skill that has to be developed over time. If someone wanted to follow in your footsteps what advice would you give? I think there are many fine programs in gemology to discover... and of course, a love of beautiful stones helps! CASHMERE GET SCHOOLED ON ONE OF FASHION’S MOST BELOVED THREADS.

“What is cashmere?” I thought for a minute before I answered. “It’s a kind of wool. From a goat. I think.” My friend seemed happy enough with that answer but I must admit, I had been fashion shamed. This is a question I should have been able to answer. Any yet for many of us, cashmere remains a mystery. What do we know about it? What makes it such a desired material? And most importantly, how do we care for it? As if in answer, I stumbled upon Les 100 Ciels, a Parisian brand who produce stunning cashmere creation—who

coincidentally happen to own their own cashmere goat farms in Mongolia. Who better than to fill the gaps of our fashion knowledge? — NICOLE ROSS What is the allure of cashmere? Before we started Les 100 Ciels, we found that cashmere had gained something of a reputation for being the clothing of choice for middle aged mums and grandmas. Thus, the idea was born to create a brand which would bring something exciting to the cashmere world, where cashmere would

HEAVEN HAS HEELS september 2014

once again become synonymous with modern and fashionable designs. We always start from classic cashmere shapes and then draw inspiration from fashion trends to play with lines, prints, and shapes. We believe in the quality that cashmere stands for and invest in cashmere that is exquisite and luxurious. If you take care of it, it will last you a lifetime. We love cashmere. We celebrate our love in every collection. How does having access to your own cashmere goat farms affect the overall quality of your designs? By having access to our own goat farms, we get to work closer with our goats— sometimes literally. We get to know them by name and know how best to take care of them. This kind of access is fantastic and informs all areas of our work. It allows us to be innovative in our craftsmanship and develop new skills. Our designers can have access to the production process and allow the yarns to inspire their designs and colours. How did you end up with Mongolian connections? Is that the best place for cashmere? Mongolia does have some of the best cashmere in the world but as well as this, as a company we believe in building partnerships with local communities thereby supporting their development. What’s the best way to look after a garment made of cashmere? Cashmere does require a little TLC but this is very simple. We recommend using a gentle detergent or cashmere shampoo and washing in warm water; drying it flat to prevent stretching. Unless you wear your cashmere item regularly, we also recommend folding it to keep its shape and store in a garment bag or pillow case with lavender balls (cashmere is a particular delicacy to moths). You can also use special cashmere combs (such as the Les 100 ciels cashmere comb) to prolong the life of your cashmere by gently removing bobbles which may appear over time. When it comes to inspired design, how do you want the Les 1oo Ciels wearer to feel, when dressed in your designs? We believe that fashion is timeless, not fixed to a season or particular

HEAVEN HAS HEELS september 2014

trend. Thus, our styling reflects this; with a focus on comfort and giving our wearers possibilities to express their individuality. We want our customers to feel confident and comfortable when wearing our designs. How has the brand been received since it launched? We have had a great response since our launch in the U.K. Lots of people seem to be moving away from fast fashion and have more interest in natural styling with sustainable production processes. People are taking the time to consider where their clothing has come from. We have found that our customers really do care and we love discovering that our customers share our passion for what the brand stands for. What’s been your biggest challenge to date? Our biggest challenge has been in conveying that cashmere can be affordable and versatile. Cashmere is known to carry a hefty price tag and people tend to shy away from even considering it. However, as our cashmere is priced very competitively, it is possible to get a wardrobe staple at a great price. The other challenge has been in informing people about the versatility of cashmere which is heavily associated with winter wear. We carry cashmere which is very fine and light so that it can easily be worn during spring or summer. Getting customers to understand their options with cashmere has been challenging. What do you consider to be your greatest success? Our greatest success has been the opening of our store in the beautiful St Christopher’s Place. It was a dream for a long time to open a store in London which would encapsulate our vision of the brand. We’ve carefully considered everything about our store— from the beautiful garments to the location and interior design—even the hangers! Our store has been a delight to us and so much more. What does the future hold for the brand? Who knows what the future holds?! All we can say is, we want to share our cashmere love with the world and we hope that we can keep on growing and bringing new and exciting cashmere to our customers! ‘Dreaming big and aiming high,’ that’s what we say at our offices. — Les100C.com

FASHIONABLE READS FOR THE STYLISH BOOKWORM. DRESSED TO IMPRESS Fashion is an outward expression of an inward ideal. Nowhere is that more obviously reflected than in our everyday style. Away from the runways and aspirational fashion scene, movements—political, cultural and socioeconomic— can be seen on the streets in which we live, in the way we dress. Author Josh Sims explores this and much more in the latest addition to the popular series, 100 Ideas That Changed Street Style (Laurence King Publishing). Encompassing over 70 years of street style trends and sub-cultures, Sims takes us on a fascinating fashion journey. In a world where fabric can divide, unite and push the boundaries of social stereotypes, this book is an insightful look at the true power of fashion. LaurenceKing.com PRETTY IN PRINT From interiors to fashion, print plays an integral part in our creative dialogue and today, the possibilities seem endless. MANEOURATTRACTION RESIDENT HAIR GURU, CELEBRITY STYLIST RYAN NICKULAS, MAKES A CASE FOR HEAD-TURNING HUES.

Green, purple, pink...Everyone from Nicole Richie to Kate Perry is rocking colored locks. We love the look, but is it something us ordinary folk can pull off? We chatted with celebrity stylist and owner of Ryan Darius salon, Ryan Nickulas, about the dos and don’ts of brightly colored hair. FOR THE COMMITMENT PHOBIC Going permanently pink—or any color for that matter—can be a daunting prospect. Nickulas recommends pre-colored hair extensions for those not ready to commit to a permanent head of neon. CALL IN THE EXPERTS Make sure your colored tresses turn heads for the right reason. If you are not the brave, skilled coiffure able to do this at home, Nickulas suggests leaving it to the experts. We couldn’t agree more! IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU? For Nickulas, these not-so subtle hair hues ooze self-expression and individuality. If you’re brave enough to wear your wow with confidence, we say go for it. We all need a little color in our lives. — RyanDarius.com

DIY FACIAL

RENOWNED SKINCARE PROFESSIONAL, ILDI PEKAR, GIVES US HER TOP TIPS FOR CREATING AT-HOME BEAUTY TREATMENTS FIT FOR A SUPERMODEL. If you’ve ever been up close and personal with a supermodel, you’ll know that genetics is only one part of looking (and staying) beautiful. For true beauty, it’s all about maintenance. Every fashion season, the beautiful flock to renowned facialist, Ildi Pekar, for a first class treatment to enhance and restore their natural beauty. Luckily for us, the Budapest-born beauty professional, is sharing a few insider tips for at-home beauty treatments.

HOW TO BOOST YOUR BEAUTY DIY facials are

so easy and fun. One of my favorites, is a honey and avocado diy facial for clean, hydrated skin. I recommend doing this with raw/organic ingredients only. These little facials can give your skin the proper boost it requires to have great skin in

between visit to your skin care expert.

HOW TO BANISH PILLOW CREASE MARKS ON YOUR FACE Make sure you

put your moisturizer on prior to bed time. You need to hydrate your skin so that it doesn’t dry out and cause wrinkles naturally. We recommend purchasing silk or satin pillow cases to prevent (and avoid) creases from forming during your night’s sleep. We also recommend sleeping on your back, which is difficult at first, but also helps avoid any markings on your skin from occurring. When you get up in the morning, wash your skin with luke warm water and give yourself a massage for stimulation. If you sleep on your face, it causes poor circulation that leads to more wrinkles. Give your skin the extra circulation it needs to

avoid any creases.

HOW TO REDUCE PUFFY EYES Morning and

night, boil one cup of water, add one organic chamomile tea bag. Soak for five-ten minutes. Take a cotton pad, wipe your eyes with the chamomile tea and take the tea bag and leave on each eye for five minutes. Take two teaspoons, put them in the freezer; use the back of the spoon and hold it under your eyes for five minutes. This should decrease the puffiness in the eyes.

HOW TO MAKE AN EGG WHITE MASK Break two

eggs, take only the egg white and use a tiny brush to then apply around your eye area. This you can do in the morning or before bed to help reduce puffiness. I recommends doing a three minute eye massage before and when you wake up as

well. This gives your eyes the stimulation it loses during your sleep.

HOW TO INCREASE STIMULATION Cucumber and mint leaves are great for stimulation. Blend cucumber and mint, and soak a cotton ball in them. Wipe around your eyes and rinse after twenty minutes. Leave on like a mask for fifteen-twenty minutes.

HOW TO REHYDRATE YOUR SKIN To rehydrate your skin drink plenty of water during the day and prior to sleeping. Puffiness could be a sign of dehydration. Cucumbers are a great hydrating anti-inflammatory. Take two cold slice of cucumber and put them on your eyes and laydown. Wash your eyes with cold water stimulates your circulation. — IldiPekar.com

BATHING BEAUTY THE HEALING POWER OF A GOOD SOAK THANKS TO GARDEN APOTHECARY. Sore, tired legs deserve a good, relaxing soak. This month, we caught up with Jennifer Lee Segale, botanist and founder of Garden Apothecary for tips on how to get the most out of our bath time. What are some of the healing effects of a great bath? Soaking in the bath has a number of healing effects, all custom to whatever ailments you might be experiencing. For the body, it’s an easy way to hydrate, release toxins from the skin, promote blood circulation, muscle relaxation and much more. For the mind, soaking gives us a chance to slow down our thoughts and “zone out.” Doing nothing actually allows our body to realign, restore and get back into balance. These are just a very few of the ways soaking in the bath helps with our health. What is bath tea? Our bath teas are a custom blend of USAmined Epsom salts with whole botanicals. Instead of using oils or synthetics chemicals, we exclusively use parts of organic plants—so essentially you are steeping in a bath tea. For example, our Jasmine + Bergamot + Violet bath tea has exactly that—whole heads of creamy white jasmine flowers, bergamot absolute oil and

chopped up bits of violet leaf. Do you need a spa-grade bath to get the health benefits of a good soak? Absolutely not. You don’t need anything special to have a good bath. The best baths are in quiet, undisturbed places where you can fill the tub with hot water and organic bath teas. Even soaking your hands and feet in a bowl of hot water and petals, or bits of foliage will do the trick. How can different botanical products help relax and rejuvenate? There are so many ways different plants help restore and rejuvenate! For instance, when you are taking a bath, peppermint can ease you into the transition from room temperature to hot water, relaxing your muscles and giving you the feeling of a “clean sweat.” Simply chew the stems and leaves for the first minute or two while entering the tub. From there, you can move onto lavender and calendula (for 10-20 minutes) for really allowing your body to relax into the position, also helping your mind to slow down and release. The last couple minutes you can pour yourself a tea of something like Wild Yam root to sooth an upset or irregular stomach, or

Dandelion leaf to boost your immune system with ample antioxidants and vitamins A, C, D and B complex. What are some ingredients that can help sore, tired feet? Calendula with Epsom salts! Both of these ingredients pair well with each other and can be used in the bath or a bow of hot water. You can also make a Calendula poultice with water or honey (applied topically). How did Garden Apothecary come about? My background is professional botany, so when I first started Garden Apothecary, I wanted to be sure to use organic and whole botanicals. I was searching for indulgent and healing beauty products and couldn’t find exactly what I wanted—so I decided to try and make them! Do you get to try all of your creations? Yes! What do you love most about your work? I love every aspect of my work, but working hands on with flowers and plants is my favorite. Feeling the herbs, smelling fresh and fragrant petals... It’s a very sensory experience. Formulating new products can be very indulgent!
