There’s No Silver Bullet Reasons, Seasons, Lifetimes and Shifts A Quick Fix for Panic, Anxiety & Insomnia

Healthy Beginnings Magazine started with its first publication in August of 2006 and we are still going strong in August of 2014. Healthy Beginnings Magazine made a conscious choice to use newsprint as a print medium, just like The Wall street Journal our content is substance driven.

Pouch Full of …Energy? Fun and Fitness with the Whole Family Sugar Feeds Cancer Tumors

We believe in earning your trust by publishing credible and fact-based, educational articles. Articles that engage you, the reader, in taking a deeper look at why and how our body, mind and spirit react in less than optimal healthy situations; and also how they react in positive, healthy situations. Articles are written by medical professionals and freelance writers who back up their findings with science and references.

ugust is the month Healthy Beginnings looks at growth and preparation. For some, it becomes the final weeks of their back-to-school routine, while others simply prepare to make a mental shift from summer to fall. For us, August marks the anniversary of our first publication.

Healthy Beginnings Magazine is grateful and thankful for you, our loyal monthly readers, who have made calls to, and who have purchased products and services from, the advertisers that support the theme and focus of our magazine. It is our advertisers that financially support the magazine, be sure to let them know you found them in Healthy Beginnings Magazine. Thank you to all the advertisers who have supported Healthy Beginnings Magazine, it was a pleasure serving you.

As we look back over the years, we reflect on a plethora of unique experiences. Without the challenges and ease, the struggles and wins, or the egos and selflessness, we would never truly see our successes. We would not come to know what Healthy Beginnings meant to others. But, mostly, we would not really understand the growth we achieved.

Healthy Beginnings Magazine also thanks, and is grateful for, the many team members we have worked with throughout the years. Our editor, Ffjorren, works diligently to maintain a high standard of writing and professional formatting. Our layout department works hand-in-hand to give you an eye appealing product. Our distribution team is out delivering magazines to get them out on the street on time, regardless of the weather they might face. From a business perspective, Healthy Beginnings Magazine’s longevity is attributed to an ethical belief in staying true to its mission statement, high standards and a belief that honesty is the best policy!

Growth is a messy thing. It’s not perfect and it’s not always ideal. But, as time progresses, the point is to view all of your experiences from afar; like a map or timeline of your life. To see your victories is sometimes effortless, but, to truly see your losses, with a clear understanding of why and how it impacted your life, is the real bud of growth.

It has been my pleasure in being of service to the community, and to partner with our advertisers in growing their practices, while bringing you the reader quality and up-to-date health information. Here’s to many more years to come!

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

Free Yoga Classes for MS Patients The free MS Yoga Project weekly classes begin Monday August 4th at www.pilatestahoe.com or by calling (775) 580-6463. The classes are taught by Jennifer Barioni who is a National MS Society certified MS Movement instructor. According to Dr. Bloch, “The teacher is a most important consideration... it’s a first priority that they should have training for the applications for MS treatment.”

Edgewater at Virginia Lake housing project underway

Barioni’s passion to reach out to the Lake Tahoe MS community is inspired by the fact that she is very familiar with the condition... her mother suffers from the disease. Her complimentary classes will focus on breathing for relaxation, strength, flexibility, engagement therapy and more. She welcomes patients in all stages of the disease and encourages a family member or friend attend as well.

Demolition began on July 8, in preparation for Edgewater at Virginia Lake, a new 336-unit condominium/townhouse subdivision. The nearly 10-acre project will be located on the southwest corner of the Eastshore Drive/Lymbery Street intersection.

Dr. Bigley cautions that, “Some more intense forms, such as Bikram, which is practiced in hot rooms, are not appropriate and a patients physical restrictions must be taken into account.” Dr. Bloch adds that taking into account a patients clinical situation, (there’s a lot of variability patient to patient) Hatha yoga (the gentle basic form) or Lyengar yoga are the best forms to start out with. For more information, she notes that “the National MS Society has great informational resources on their website at www.nationalmssociety. org” and patients can reserve a spot online.

Along with the demolition of the current Virginia Lake Apartments, built in the 1960s, the Silverwing Development project will include the removal of 87 existing trees along Eastshore Drive. Although the project is on private land, the City of Reno wants the public to know that the landscape plan for Edgewater at Virginia Lake includes 227 new trees, including 175 large trees, consistent with an overall renovation plan for Virginia Lake that was previously approved by Reno City Council in 2004. “The City of Reno continues to support reinvestment within our urban core,” says Fred Turnier, Community Development Director for the City of Reno. “Over the long term this more closely aligns with the vision of Virginia Lake that was set forth by Council. It’s also better for the environment because it will result in a more diversified tree inventory.” A 2,500-square-foot clubhouse overlooking the pool and a stateof-the-art gym and business center are also included in the plans for Edgewater at Virginia Lake. The first occupancies of the new for sale and rental homes is expected to occur in March 2015. For more information, visit edgewatervl.com

Dr. Crawford has provided international instruction in these techniques to physicians and physical therapists in the United States, Canada, Japan and the UK. This November, he will provide the same training to healthcare workers in China.

r. Bruce Crawford is Reno’s only Board Certified Urogynecologist. A Urogynecologist is a medical doctor who has specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of common conditions such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse (“fallen bladder”), sexual dissatisfaction, and bowel control problems.

In addition to his work in Northern Nevada, Dr. Crawford has been active in international medicine. He has worked in Niger West Africa and in Rwanda, where he provides surgical treatment of a condition known as obstetric fistula. Obstetric fistula is a maternal birth injury that creates a hole between the bladder and the vagina, making the victim completely incontinent of urine. Through his work with the International Organization for Women and Development, Dr. Crawford helped to provide needed treatment for hundreds of African women.

Dr. Crawford has been a bit of a pioneer in the conservative treatment of these kinds of problem. In 2009, he created the Pfilates Program, based on research conducted right here in Reno. The Pfilates program is a method of strengthening the muscles that control the bladder (the so called Kegel muscles). He recognized that no progress had been made in this important area of women’s health since 1947, when Dr. Kegel first described these exercises. Dr. Crawford recognized that “the pelvic floor muscles are muscles of movement” and that these muscles are better conditioned using certain types of movement.

For more info, contact Dr. Bruce Crawford at Gyn Specialists of Reno at (775) 284-3482.

At Gyn Specialists of Reno, patients are taught how to perform the Pfilates movements by trained instructors who use a sophisticated system of analysis called the VESy Lab to pick out the two or three movements that are best for each patient. Dr. Crawford noticed that 80 percent of patients in his practice have been able to avoid surgery for bladder control problems using these cutting edge techniques.

Ignite Your Passion A

re you looking for more passion? Do you crave more excitement? Searching for ways to enhance your love life? Well, you’re not alone. Complaints regarding one’s sexual health and relationships are among the top reasons for doctor visits today.

the brain’s pleasure chemicals. Dark chocolate contains several nutrients that promote optimal levels of the brain’s libido-friendly hormones. XoLove Bites: The Perfect Love Food

Sexual dysfunction is real and debilitating. As many as 43 percent of women and a third of all men suffer from some type of sexual dysfunction. There are two major contributors to sexual dysfunction.

To address the widespread problem of sexual dysfunction, Xocai developed XoLove Bites. Chocolate has long been identified with passion, love and romance. With that in mind, XoLove Bites feature Xocai’s Healthy Chocolate as the perfect delivery system for the potent benefits of L-arginine and maca. Xocai’s Healthy Chocolate possesses powerful aphrodisiac properties, promotes optimal balance of brain hormones, and is proven to improve blood flow. XoLove Bites also feature the powerful blood-flow and sexual function benefits of L-arginine for both men and women. Finally, XoLove Bites contain maca, a highly renowned aphrodisiac and energy-stimulating botanical. Together, these ingredients create the perfect “love food” for enhanced sexual function, increased passion and significantly more satisfaction in your love life.

Insufficient Blood Flow: In men, low blood flow results in difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection. In women, it means diminished stimulation and sensitivity in the sexual organs and a loss of libido. The reason for insufficient blood flow often is the result of a shortage of a critical amino acid called L-arginine. Imbalance of Brain Hormone: The brain produces various hormones (“pleasure” chemicals) that enhance libido and create the emotions of love, passion and excitement. Stress, age, poor diet and other factors lead to decreased libido and lower levels of

Why Is L-Arginine So Important for Sexual Health?

4. Mydrchocolate.com (Live Young with Chocolate)

In the 1990s, major studies began to establish the essential amino acid L-arginine as a potent, safe and effective prosexual nutrient for both men and women. Since then, hundreds of studies have confirmed that L-arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), a key messaging molecule that triggers elasticity in blood vessels and improves blood flow throughout the body. More nitric oxide means more blood flow to the sexual organs for improved sexual function and greater satisfaction in one’s sexual relationships.

For more info, contact Kathy Woodward with Xocai Chocolate, at (775) 853-9006. See ad on this page.

Unlike the synthetic medications and artificial supplements for sexual health that deplete our bodies of nitric oxide , consuming two XoLove Bites a day for 2-3 weeks will build up the natural nitric oxide that our bodies need and can also replace and restore the natural chemicals needed.

XOÇAI

XoLove Bites will turn on the passion hormones in all areas of your life without the negative side effects associated with prescription drugs. And because they are nutrient rich and high in anti-oxidants, they will improve your overall health, as well.

Sugar Feeds Cancer Tumors

I

Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

have been told (many times) by patients that they have heard from their oncologist, or his/her nurse, they can eat anything they want, and sugar consumption does not matter when treating cancer.

means the more sugar available, the more energy is produced and the faster the cancer cells can grow! This is proven every time a PET scan is performed on a cancer patient to find out if the cancer has spread. Sugar molecules are radioactively tagged and injected into the patient. After about an hour, the patient is put under a nuclear scanner. The resulting image will detect where the sugar has concentrated. It always concentrates in tumor cells, because of their greater need for sugar.

Any doctor or nurse who tells you your diet and sugar consumption have nothing to do with tumor growth simply does not know what they are talking about. They need to go back and review their biochemistry and physiology. Otto Warburg, M.D., PhD was a German physician who received the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1931. He received it for proving that all cancer cells, no matter the location, use an abnormal method of burning sugar called anaerobic metabolism. Also referred to as glycolysis, or fermentation, this means of burning sugar to get energy to grow is 18 times less efficient than normal aerobic metabolism. What this means, on a practical level, is cancer needs 18 times more sugar moment by moment than normal cells. It obtains this from the blood stream, which in turn, gets it from the diet.

So you can see that high carbohydrate (all carbohydrates turn into sugar in the digestive process) consumption directly promotes tumor growth. Any opinion to the contrary is simply not founded in scientific fact. The solution for cancer patients is the consumption of a high protein, high healthy fat, and low carbohydrate diet, with plenty of non-starchy vegetables. This will produce ketones. The brain can burn ketones to keep functioning, cancer cells cannot; they must have simple sugars.

Now don’t get the wrong impression. You cannot cure your cancer by not eating sugar. This is because the brain requires sugar at the same intensity as it requires oxygen. So you must have some level of blood sugar for the brain to function.

However, eating concentrated, high doses of sugar is like throwing gasoline on a fire. The fire is the tumor. It will absolutely promote faster growth of the tumor.

2. Warburg, Otto, M.D., PhD. The Prime cause of cancer and Prevention, hopeforcancer.com, original lecture in 1969.

In his book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease, Thomas Seyfried, PhD states, “the restriction of glucose availability will also downregulate the pentose phosphate pathway, which is glucose dependent. The pentose phosphate pathway includes transkeolase 1, an enzyme involved in driving glycolysis.” In short, “glucose dependent”

There’s No

S i lv e r B u l l e t Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

I

In 2002, I contracted a serious case of pneumonia, which was allowed to stick around way too long before relenting and taking antibiotics. The antibiotics may have saved my life at that point, but within three months afterward my health literally crumbled. Unexplained weight gain of 35 lbs, profound fatigue, every fiber of my being ached, constipation and a whole lot more. Several of my colleagues were in the allopathic and alternative field. Quality people. I was diagnosed by them eventually with fibromyalgia and that’s what I was treated for. But the “standard” approach of taking a supplement, doing a food allergy test, doing chelation due to a positive heavy metal test all produced either occasional temporary improvement or no results at all. My colleagues were all looking for the “silver bullet,” the one disease, one cause solution. But it didn’t exist. It still doesn’t.

My recovery started with the brain, and the fact that prior to the pneumonia I was under severe stress. My brain never shut off, couldn’t get to sleep--couldn’t go back to sleep. This created abnormal biochemistry (too much cortisol), which was contributing to my over all pain patterns. This had to be corrected--preferably without drugs. I found a Doctor, a functional neurologist in Appleton Wisconsin, who taught me to do that. My pains reduced by about 50 percent. Who would have thought? The brain? It only controls everything. But the cause or perpetrator of chronic pain? Yes, at least in my case, and since then I’ve found it to be true in most chronic pain sufferers. Next, this doctor told me to contact another Doctor in San Diego who did something called functional medicine--an “alternative” type of care. This doctor started to talk to me about gluten, celiac and Hoshimoto’s Thyroiditis. Things I have never heard of before. It turned out I had them all, including chronic fatigue and peripheral neuropathy. In retrospect, I can add leaky gut, hypoglycemia and SIBO (small intestine bowel over growth) and numerous food allergies. I was probably autoimmune most of my life (since 3rd grade) and had it triggered by the pneumonia. Previously, I only knew autoimmune disease to be things like MS, Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. OK. Now what? What’s the test for this? What’s the diet? Gluten free? Of course. Paleo? What pills? Can this be helped?

I ended up having to embrace an entirely different model of care for chronic pain. A much more complex model than to just take a pill (drug or supplement), or only to change my diet. I was about to find out the journey back to health would require discipline, not hanging on to a model of “what did the tests say,” not hoping for the next miracle, and not expecting that what “fixed” one fibromyalgia patient was going to “fix” me. In other words, not depending on acute care methods to fix what was now a chronic problem.

PROVIDER PROFILE Leigh Hurst BS Social Work AA Psychology Minor Gerontology

My next internship was at the local hospital, which gave me many unique experiences. My last internship was Social Work for Government, with the business section the nuns ran on campus. We protested against the war and wrote to many congressman. I worked part-time as a CAN, taking care of elderly dying nuns, and volunteered with the elderly nuns. Little did I know or understand I would become an educator and experienced death advisor for people.

M

y career started at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. My mentor Tom McNaughton, who was the Director on Aging and a Professor in Gerontology, encouraged the State of Michigan to accept me as a first year intern. Their Social Worker had died and they handed me her keys, cell phone, and 150 clients and said, “Do we need to hold your hand or can you do this?” I went out to visit clients everywhere from rural communities, people living behind dumpsters, motels, and in suburbs who were aging and needed services.

During the 6 years I attended this University, I studied sex and aging and it became one of my passions. In the past 18 years, I have heard almost every kind of sexual story there is. People who are aging want someone to discuss their sexual journey with. Many people have expressed that as you age, there is no one who wants to listen about your sex life. I listen to people and give them a new way of thinking to go forth on their journey.

Awake

Before I even graduated, businesses were interviewing me. A nursing home in Reno Nevada moved me and my family out to Reno from Michigan to be a social worker for 179 dying patients. There was such a great turnaround with patients. On Monday mornings, I would receive four to six files saying these clients have died, speak to their family, here are your new patients. I barely got to know their names before they were gone.

I then was hired as an Activities Director/Social worker at a low income senior living facility. When I was first hired, I asked what I was supposed to do. They responded with, “Just do a puppet show once a week.” I learned right then, people needed to be educated on older adults. I said I would not accept a job insulting

seniors for a living. They called me back 2 weeks later and let me build the program. I worked there for 11 years. During that time I helped people find their children they had not spoken to in 40 years. I helped people die. I brought meditation, activities, spiritual well-being, and entertainment to their lives. I helped people who were hating their life see the joy, peace and happiness all around them. I also taught many students from UNR about aging through an internship I created. I also started giving many lectures at UNR.

Each and every day, my business shifts and turns on its journey. When I started this business, I had the elderly population in mind. However, every individual is aging every day and needs help along their path. It’s about being present and aware on your journey, while moving forward and not lingering on the things you cannot change.

In 2011, I started my business Awake & Aging--being consciously aware as we age. I also started Graduate school at The University of California, while I still worked full time. I knew that every eight seconds, someone is turning 65 for the next 19 years, and there are many more people who are going to need my help.

I have been on an enlightened path since 2008. It wasn’t until 2011 when I met a Shaman who changed my life and awoke my spiritual side. Since then, I have studied with different Shamans and learned many things. I love energy work, meditating, yoga and natural healing for the body. I am a true conscious being living in human form. Awake & Aging helps people who are stuck in their business and not being as successful as they should be. A few other clients are people that have had strokes, on the verge of divorce, aging and sexuality, death and dying, helping adult children learn the best way to handle aging parents, and the list just goes on and on. I have had email clients where we work through their problems via email because they do not live in the Reno area. I work with people at every stage of their lives.

A Quick Fix for Panic, Anxiety & Insomnia R

Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

arely does a treatment modality for panic, anxiety and insomnia cause me to revamp my therapeutic approach as does utilizing high dose topical progesterone cream. I will recall some great case histories and give a brief review of progesterone on brain functioning and behavior.

I had a string of panic and anxiety patients, five or six of them in the last six weeks sitting in my exam chair saying, “Dr. Gerber, Dr. Gerber. I’m having a panic attack, on a 0 to 10 scale, I’m at a 12 and my heart is beating out of my chest, I need drugs right now. Take me to the emergency room!” I then squirted the progesterone on the inner wrists and forearms (50 to 100 mg) and instructed the patient to rub it in a circular motion together until it went in to the skin.

Progesterone Works on the Brain Gamma Amino butyric Acid (GABA) is an inhibitory brain chemical that aids relaxation and sleep. Progesterone increases GABA receptor activity in the brain, as do the tranquilizing drugs Ativan, Valium, Xanax and Klonipin, without the addictive problems. Progesterone increases GABA receptor activity, which causes calming and relaxation. Progesterone balances the excitatory effects of estrogen and is calming.

Three minutes later I asked the patient, “How do you feel now Ms. Smith?” Shifting her gaze several times, she asked incredulously, “Could I be calm?” And, indeed she was calm. Her 12 on this anxiety scale had reduced to a two or three. This was a better result than intravenous Valium, (without the side effects), or a long nutrient and amino acid IV drip after 3 hours to accomplish the same effect. It empowered the patient to do this at home as often as needed. Not all anxiety patients achieve the same results, yet I have found at least 80 percent have a reduction in symptoms, and it usually ranges from significant to profound.

40 Years of Prescribing Progesterone and Missing a Big Point I, like many alternative, Orthomolecular, homeopathic and integrative medical doctors, have been prescribing progesterone for women’s ills: PMS, painful periods, fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroid tumors of the uterus, painful breasts, infertility, miscarriage prevention and osteoporosis/ osteopenia for 40 years.

I Can’t Stop Crying A 54-year-old lady who had great results in our practice with asthma, fatigue, anger, insomnia and weight gain came in with the problem of emotional upset, and couldn’t stop crying. She didn’t have a particular reason to be crying at that time, although she had been in an abusive marriage for 30 years. Emotional lability (crying) is frequently an adrenal weakness symptom, and after a treatment with progesterone on the forearms she said she was no longer teary after three minutes.

Since a patient alerted me to Dr. Michael Platt MD’s book The Miracle of Bio Identical Hormones, and he graciously agreed to lecture for The Nevada Homeopathic and Integrative Medical Association annual seminar last fall, he asserted that progesterone is not feminizing and should be given to men and children with anxiety, insomnia, ADD and ADHD as well. Doctor, I’m Coming Apart This information was all an academic experience for me, until I started keeping high dose progesterone at my desk (50 or 60 mg per pump—over the counter and usual dose progesterone is only 20 mg per pump), did I realize a startling discovery…

Progesterone helps patients go to sleep and go back to sleep after awakening in a few minutes. I always remind patients if there are any stresses that affect the adrenal glands, then it doesn’t store blood sugar in the liver adequately and they run out of blood sugar in the night. When the blood sugar drops, the brain is alarmed and signals the adrenal gland to release adrenalin into the blood stream. These hormones take fat to the liver, where it is turned in to blood sugar. The body doesn’t die from lack of blood sugar but there is an adrenalin release. It is like trying to sleep on speed, awakening the individual whose mind then goes to the unresolved problems of the day and aggravates the stress response. Progesterone suppresses this adrenalin response and allows sleep to return more quickly.

REASONS, SEASONS, LIFETIMES AND SHIFTS Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

P

LIFETIME relationships teach lifetime lessons: those things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Our job is to accept the lesson, love the person (anyway) and put what you have learned to use--in all other relationships and areas of your life. It’s been said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

eople come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it’s usually to meet a need you’ve expressed outwardly or inwardly. They’ve come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support or to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend, and they are. They’re there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person may say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act out and force you to take a stand. What we should realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled. Their work is done. The request you sent out has been answered and now it’s time to move on.

The author of the three paragraphs above is unknown, but this poem has been quoted hundreds of times and has brought understanding to thousands of people. It’s interesting to note, as we move forward in our spiritual growth, and as we work on realizing and integrating our divinity, we experience new heart-centered perceptions of life. And as a result, our primary relationships either get stronger or break away. Those who continue to act from wounded places, or from fears, will be less compatible with our energy frequencies. Many family relationships fall away, along with the dense patterns that helped form us. They’ve assisted us in being human and have given us life experiences from which to learn and grow. If they’ve served that purpose, we may no longer need them. We’ve made a shift. We’ve begun to experience a

When people come into your life for a SEASON, it’s because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They may bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something that you’ve never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it. It’s real, but only for a season.

new way of being with the Earth and all the beings living here. For decades, we may have longed for a sense of belonging without knowing exactly what we were looking for. But as masses of people awaken from their forgetfulness, we are slowly but surely finding “our people,” regardless of our former beliefs about compatibility.

TAKE BACK YOUR POWER NOW!

Call 775.786.9111

However, in the meantime--between feeling more connected to all beings that have consciousness, including the Earth, plants and animals--and feeling the current disconnection from our oldest relationships, the loss can feel quite painful. When you look around and notice many relationships continuing as normal, it’s just because there has not been a major shift of consciousness in the people involved, or maybe both parties are becoming more conscious in ways that are similar and compatible with each other. So, if you’re experiencing splits in primary relationships right now, you’re probably creating some huge shifts within yourself. Dissolving relationships that no longer serve your highest growth is just one part of this shift. It’s important to remember that there’s nothing wrong with you or them, it’s just a change that your soul is ready to make. Because honestly, is staying stuck or relinquishing your personal power really worth any relationship? Our awakening soul’s higher frequencies aren’t harmonious with denser ones, and in order to continue our spiritual growth we must move through the necessary clearing process. When we realize we are complete and whole within ourselves, extensions of divinity, we’ll know we don’t need to “feed” off dysfunctional relationships and we’ll create a whole new way of being in relationship, which will be more joyful than anything we’ve yet experienced.

A Jungian Perspective on

Paranoia “Paranoia strikes deep Into your life it will creep It starts when you’re always afraid

Step out of line, the man come and take you away” ~From the song “For What It’s Worth,” by Buffalo Springfield

T

my house and I sense that he is going to destroy it. I yell at him to stop, but he just shakes his head.”

here are different kinds of paranoia with different unconscious factors driving them. This article gives a Jungian look at one type of paranoid delusion. It begins by exploring the symbolism of houses.

Apocalyptic dreams deliver the same basic message. Mass destruction and the end of the world symbolize the end of some phase of your own life. In these dreams, the world as you know it is destroyed so that a new worldview and sense of identity can take root and grow.

Houses are fairly common dream images. If you dream of a house in which you are living, or used to live, it likely symbolizes your ego, or conscious mind. Because it is a house you are familiar with, it represents the beliefs and attitudes that structure your worldview. On the other hand, a very large house or mansion, perhaps one you encounter only in your dreams, typically symbolizes the psyche as a whole. Its many levels and rooms symbolize different parts of the total personality, both conscious and unconscious.

When important changes push for recognition and expression in a person’s life, they may be met with acceptance and openness or resistance and fear. When the latter prevails, it is because we are reluctant to let go of certain beliefs or attachments. We may try to deny or ignore the transformation that knocks upon the door. This is when anxiety problems typically enter your life. Anxiety is aroused because you sense that a change is coming into your life, but you don’t want to look at it. Unfortunately, if you run from this change you are likely to experience a troubling sense of dread or impending doom. This is a classic symptom of panic attacks.

In order to grow as a person, old ways of perceiving and looking at things must sometimes be discarded to make room for new levels of awareness and understanding. These periods of transformation are often symbolized in dreams by death. Genuine transformation of the ego’s viewpoint is a death/rebirth experience. It feels like death to the ego because one way of seeing and being is sacrificed so that a more creative and encompassing perspective can come to life.

The psyche embodies the whole personality, and so, is far stronger and wiser than the ego. The changes it seeks will eventually bring down the constricting and outmoded house of the ego. Now, whereas some people experience this impending change with anxiety, others approach it with a readiness to fight. Not to fight for change, unfortunately, but to fight against it. And, typically,

But another way that transformation of the ego is represented in dreams is by the destruction of your house. For example, a woman who had outgrown certain beliefs and assumptions of her youth dreamed, “I see a man driving a bulldozer. He is driving it towards

Ironically, as David stockpiled guns and ammunition, and as he became more vocal regarding the threat of invasion, he did eventually come to the attention of Homeland Security. He was essentially drawing forth at an outer level what he failed to see and understand at an inner level. He was unconsciously enacting his dreams. This is a dangerous aspect of the person who refuses introspection and the examination of his political or religious fixations from a symbolic standpoint. In refusing to explore how his view of reality is influenced by his inner attitudes and psychological issues, he unwittingly enacts his inner drama in the outer world. The internal dream becomes an outer dream. To paraphrase Carl Jung, what we do not face from within comes at us from without.

Mass destruction and the end of the world symbolize the end of some phase of your own life. they project the intended inner change outward. In other words, they become gripped by the belief that there is a dangerous external threat in their life. For example, they may be certain that someone is going to rob them, or that they are going to contract a fatal disease; that all of their rights will be taken away, or that the world will soon come to an end due to nuclear war, collision with an asteroid, or some other catastrophe. It is these imagined outward threats that they then begin to prepare for and fight. The following is a fictional but psychologically accurate example of this phenomenon.

Shakespeare said that, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” But where do we get our lines from? What motivates our decisions and actions? Ultimately, they are driven by our own inner dramas, often reflected in our dreams. These are the emotional issues and addictions, fears, hates, loves and calling that compose our deeper personality. Our decisions and actions are driven from below by our relationship to the unfolding development of our psyche and destiny. If we are at odds with this process, our inner drama and attitudes will tend to manifest in our outer life as conflict and recurring frustration.

David grew up in a small, Midwestern farming community. His family was religiously conservative with traditional, clearly-defined gender roles. One night, at the age of 57, he had the following dream, “My home is under attack by an invading army. The house is surrounded and I’m being told to surrender.” Like the woman’s dream mentioned earlier, this dream was telling David it was time for a change in his life. His house (conscious viewpoint) was under attack because some of his beliefs, such as his outmoded expectations of his wife and children, were becoming more of a hindrance than a help to him (and them). It was time for him to move on, to see and live life in a new way. Unfortunately, David externalized this call for inner change, and viewed the dream as a literal representation of a future event. He became convinced that the dream was warning him of an external threat to his home and lifestyle. More specifically, he developed the delusion that his own government was actively plotting to take his guns—his primary means of self-defense—and his right to bear arms.

What happens when a number of people are resisting a death/ transformation process in their life? If they communicate with each other, such as through a political organization or an internet chat room, they may develop and reinforce shared delusions about end of world threats that are not based in reality. As their numbers grow and their paranoia spreads, they may, like David, provoke the very situation they imagine they are trying to avoid. This mentality is an underlying dynamic behind much of hate radio and political and social movements driven by an inordinate amount of anger, fear or self-righteousness.

For more info, contact Dr. Andy Dr ymalski, Reno and Carson City psychologist at (775) 786-3818, or visit online at renocarsonpsychologist.com. Visit his blog at Jungstop.com. See ad on this page.

Wariness regarding the intentions of your government is often appropriate. In David’s case, however, wariness spilled over into an unyielding paranoia. Suggestible by nature, he became very emotional, one-sided and fanatical in his thinking on this issue. He started buying more and more ammunition and guns. He searched the internet for information and organizations that aligned with and supported his own viewpoint. The more he expected and prepared for battle with Homeland Security and the National Guard--the more he fortified and sought to protect his outworn way of life-the more he aggravated the intentions and goals of his deeper self. In time, his dreams became nightmares reflecting back to him his own misguided attitude towards the psyche. And, of course, the more persistent his dreams became, the more certain he became that invasion was just around the corner. David was driving and escalating his paranoia without even knowing it.

NURTURE

Fun and Fitness with the Whole Family Written By Allison Prater

I

remember when I was pregnant, and while working hard in Mandy Colbert’s Prenatal Yoga class, she would remind us that the real hard work begins once our babies arrive. I can’t emphasize enough how true that statement is. A regular fitness routine benefits parents and their children in a multitude of ways. As our family begins to venture into the great adventure that is “the toddler years”, I find myself wanting to be better, stronger and faster in every way. As this little human I spawned grows by the minute, keeping up with him demands more energy and focus than I ever thought possible. I sometimes joke that I lost my baby weight by wrestling him in and out of his clothes. In all seriousness, becoming a mother has given me a much deeper appreciation for my personal movement practice, which for me, is centered in yoga and dance. The benefits our family enjoys by incorporating regular movement activities into our

lives could be obtained through other physical activities than the ones I will mention. The main point I want to make is that when parents take time to maintain a regular movement routine, especially one that includes their children, there are a host of benefits for the whole family. One of the most challenging things about being a new parent, especially a new mother, is creating the time and space for one’s practice. For the time being, it is not realistic for me to lose myself in the dance studio for hours on end the way I could before I became a mama. Now, my yoga mat is a permanent fixture in the living room, and I take as many opportunities as I can to get a few poses in throughout the day. If my son is napping or playing contentedly by himself, I can get a practice in that can range anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour. Because I am often practicing where he can see me, he has started to imitate many of my movements. He will often drag a yoga mat out on his own volition, and at 16 months

imitates many poses, including downward dog, warrior 3, Hanumanasana, and he’s even attempted a head stand! I incorporate simple yoga poses, chants and breath work into our regular routine. We have many simple games that revolve around a yoga pose, and they are great for redirecting energy. Chanting and breath work are helpful when both parent and child could use an emotional reset. As a family, we also stay active in other ways, we enjoy going for walks and swimming. We kick a soccer ball around. We turn the music up and have impromptu dance parties as well. Including lots of physical play into your child’s routine helps direct their abundance of energy in appropriate ways. In my own experience, I notice that mischief making is often born out of boredom. Children that move their bodies frequently enjoy many health benefits including increased immunity, good digestion, restful sleep and emotional balance. In addition to this, the risk of illness or obesity, as well as the development of serious health problems such as diabetes, are greatly diminished. By modeling our love of movement, we instill in our children a love to move, which builds healthy habits that will stay with them for life. When I was growing up, my parents made a point to take us on lots of long hikes. They also love riding bicycles, skiing, swimming, and they are still very physically active people. I am so grateful I grew up in a household that loved moving. It was an activity that bonded us as a family.

It is important that parents make time for self-care, and in my opinion, taking time for a movement practice one loves is essential. When I am able to make time for my practice, even if it’s just a half an hour where I get to be present with my breath, I am much more patient with my son. I am much more focused and organized. I feel happier and more resilient in stressful situations, probably because of all the endorphins. I have more stamina, and I feel good in my body, which is crucial for me, because breast feeding and baby wearing are very physically demanding. I’ve no doubt the demands will be ever changing, and no less challenging. I’m grateful my practice is there to keep me in balance, and for the ways regular movement nurtures the bonds of our family. I’ve included some great kid’s yoga resources below, as well as a link to local Parks and Recreation programs in the area.

It was hard. It required discipline. It took trusting Dr. Ted Carrick and Dr Michael Johnson, both Board Certified Functional Neurologists, and Dr. Datis Kharrizian, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, and their teachings. It wasn’t easy or simple, and now as a practitioner in this field treating these conditions I can tell you, it never is. But this approach works consistently. As with most things in life that are hard to achieve and that we have to reach down inside to achieve, it turns out to be the right way. As a result, this approach has produced short term and long term results in myself and subsequently other many chronic pain sufferers. Today, my personal health is 95 percent improved and my “bad days” are as good as most people’s “good days,” maybe better. It was worth the effort.

recovery is a j o u r n e y, there’s no g e t t i n g a r o u n d i t. “Yes,” he said. “It can be helped. But the testing is poor for what you have; the labs are inconsistent and unreliable, and frequently come out normal. Also, your recovery will require a complete change in your perception of what needs to be done and also life style changes specific to you for you to get well and stay well.” I asked, “A change in lifestyle specific to me?” “Yes,” he said. “I can get 100 patients in here like you, but the diets and supplements will differ for each depending on that individuals stress levels, severity of symptoms, what’s causing their leaky gut, what their different food allergies are, etc.” Thus, I became a student of this doctor and his methods. Functional medicine and functional neurology were in their infancy and just developing. It took me a long time to get well, examining my food allergies, infections, inflammations, nutritional deficiencies (due to celiac) dysfunctional mitochondria, stress mechanisms (my brain and bad cerebellum from 8 concussions) hormonal system and environmental forms. These systems and conditions were what had to be investigated and addressed for my case. For someone else, there could be more or less systems involved. It’s never the same for any two people I was to find out.

For those of you who have a chronic thyroid or gut problem that just won’t resolve, or those of you who have almost any type of chronic disease or pain issue: recovery is a journey, there’s no getting around it. There’s no silver bullet. The good part is that if you embrace this comprehensive chronic pain model, and pay the price, vast improvements in your present health are waiting for you.

Receiving information in the form of facts and even personal validation is absolutely necessary to increase insight and understanding. The sum of our lives consists of our choices. The more informed our choices, the more we can act with confidence in creating positive outcomes. Lies feed misinformation into the feedback loop. Like an algebraic equation with random numbers inserted, lies do not lead to high quality solutions.

emember the legendary story that you were taught in grade school about George Washington, as a young boy, admitting that he chopped down the cherry tree? It has been well over 200 years, and tens of thousands of heroic and monumental acts have transpired since that time. Still, the story of the boy telling the truth endures. Why? Because being honest takes that much courage. In Washington’s story, and perhaps in our own, the simple act of telling the truth is a harbinger of potential for greatness. Among the qualities that separate other animals and life forms from humans is our ability to think and choose. There are laws of nature for the relative stability and security that we are privileged to experience in our every day lives. The degree that people lie upsets and unsettles that natural order, disrupting the flow of the Highest Good. Certain behaviors such as stealing, jealously, cheating, and murdering are universally viewed as diminishing quality of life, and therefore discouraged. Moral codes to guide us are found in every culture with ancient wisdom coming from sources such as The Ten Commandments, The Yoga sutras, The Ten Nonvirtures, etc. Lying has deleterious effects to living with integrity. Freedom of speech, and the power to use it casually to distort the truth has become too commonplace. We must have lost our historical perspective: There are places on this planet even today where you might be put to death for expressing your opinion. And yet, it seems, we take freedom of expression so for granted that we open our mouths and speak deliberate untruths without giving it a second thought. Big or small a lie is a lie.

QUANTUM WARRIOR The Future of the Mind By John Kehoe

vibrational frequency, just as the color red has a different spectral vibration from the color green. Whenever we vibrate with confidence we align ourselves with that particular energy. We literally become that energy.

D

When John Kehoe was a young man living in a cabin in the Canadian woods, wondering why he didn’t have more prosperity, he realized he was thinking of wealth in a very limited way. He decided to look at the concept as abundance rather than just money. He began to realize that he had a lot of abundance at his disposal. He had an abundance of clean, fresh air, an abundance of wildlife, of beautiful trees and wildflowers. He began to consciously appreciate and align with the abundance all around him. He had heard somewhere that his subconscious mind couldn’t tell the difference between real and pretend, so when all he had to eat was a bunch of grapes, he made an effort to feel abundant because he did have a lot of grapes. He began to feel better about everything and as he felt better about himself and his life he began to get ideas of how he could create abundance that he could actually spend. One of the most exciting ideas was that he could teach this to other people. He honed his skills by speaking at some local libraries and to make a long story short, five years to the day that he left the cabin, he was touring Australia teaching his Thought Dynamics course, and had checked into the Presidential Suite at the Sheraton Hotel in Sydney for a month--the same suite the Beatles had stayed in when they played Sydney.

ecades before the movie “The Secret” became a household word, John Kehoe was giving seminars about the creative power of our thoughts. We now know that we are complex and extraordinary beings of consciousness and energy, but it’s only recently that scientists have discovered the brain can actually be rewired using conscious intention. Consciousness, as incredible as it sounds, directs energy. To know this is to know something great. Everything in this universe consists of vibrating energy. Everything! Our feelings, thoughts, beliefs and desires are also vibrating energy. This is the first understanding of our reality. The second understanding is that consciousness directs this energy. Therefore we can easily direct energy with our thoughts. Most of us have no idea how to do this. It’s not taught in school, and even in 2014 it’s not common knowledge. You may have heard of The Law of Attraction, but most don’t know the little tips and tricks to make it work in your favor. It’s working all the time, but we are not aware of it unless we start to seriously look at what we were thinking or feeling when something “happened” to us. Only when we do this analysis on a regular basis do we see a pattern and realize what’s going on. Maybe we should call this process The Law of Paying Attention.

For over thirty years, John Kehoe has earned worldwide recognition for his pioneering work in the field of mind power and consciousness. He is an inspiring speaker, author, philanthropist and proponent of our amazing potential as humans. His books have been international best sellers. In this work, he combines the most up-to-date scientific discoveries with mystical teachings, to create a vision of the human quantum warrior and the possibilities of our future as a species.

Every day we are weaving a personal web of energy which creates our life. We are interacting with the gigantic quantum web of energy every moment that we are awake. This web is filled with energy and information, and carries within it unlimited possibilities of manifestation. Each of us can weave this web any time we choose, and we can do this consciously. For example, when we are focusing our thoughts and emotions on successful outcomes in our life we’re weaving the web, increasing the probability of these things happening. Or if we’re focusing on what we don’t want, we’re weaving the web creating those events. Everything in the universe has its own unique vibration, what scientists call its energy signature. The energy of confidence, for example, has a very specific

Chapters include Quantum Reality, Athletes of the Mind, The Seven Disciplines, Creating a Model of Reality, Conscious Evolution and much more. These chapter titles may sound daunting, but this book reads like a novel. Kehoe is an excellent writer and he can make any concept fascinating and understandable. HERBS&SPICES Potato Lovage Soup Ingredients:

T

2 tablespoons butter

1 bunch green onions (white and light green parts, chopped)

1 medium yellow onion (peeled and chopped)

2 quarts chicken or vegetable stock

3 medium Russet potatoes (peeled and chopped)

1 bunch (1 oz.) lovage leaves (chopped fine)

heavy cream (to serve)

Written By Allison Prater

he name Lovage is from “love-ache,” ache being a medieval name for parsley; this herb is sometimes referred to as “the love parsley.” The official German name is Liebstöckel, literally translated as “love stick.” The Croatian name for this plant is ljupčac, or vegeta, named after a well-known Croatian meal seasoning. The Finnish name is liperi or lipstikka, the former meaning “preacher’s collar,” because in old ages the plant was cultivated in monasteries or in rectories, while the latter is from Swedish, which is the second language spoken in Finland. Lovage, or Levisticum officinale, is a tall perennial plant that can grow up to 6 ft. in height. The long hollow stems and pointed leaves have a flavor reminiscent of celery, though slightly more bitter. The plant produces clusters of greenish yellow flowers in the late summer and early fall, which mature into small aromatic seeds. This herb enjoys many culinary uses. The leaves are used to give body and aroma to soups and stews. The root may be grated raw into salads, or it can be pickled or dried and served in the form of a condiment. The seeds can be sprinkled on breads and grains, or steeped in brandy to create a settling digestive liquor. The seeds are also used in perfumery. Lovage has a reputation as a slimming herb. An infusion of seeds, leaves and roots is said to reduce water retention and assists in the elimination of toxins. The root has expectorant properties and has been used to treat bronchitis, tonsillitis and mouth ulcers. It has also been used to treat cystitis and menstrual pain. It is sometimes used in animal wellness because of its anti-convulsion and sedative properties. Pregnant women and those with kidney problems should avoid using lovage. While generally considered safe for culinary use, please consult with a care provider you trust before using lovage for therapeutic purposes.

Directions: • Melt the butter in a stock pot over medium-high heat. When it froths, reduce the heat to medium and stir in green and yellow onions. Fry until fragrant, about five minutes. • Pour in chicken stock and stir in chopped potatoes. Simmer, covered, about thirty minutes or until potatoes are tender. • Stir in lovage and simmer, covered, a further five or six minutes. • Remove from heat and blend with an immersion blender or food processor until smooth. • Season with sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Stir in a spoonful of heavy cream and serve. References: 1. Kowalchik, Claire, and Whilliam H Hylton. Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs. Rodale Press. Emmaus, Pennsylvania, 1987. 2. ...continued from page 27. Often lies are told with misdirected ‘good intentions’. One example is when a child who accurately perceives a problem with their parent asks, “What’s wrong?” only to have the parent blandly reply “Nothing.” Although the parent may have been trying to spare the child worry, the actual outcome is that the child will either think their parent is lying or will come to mistrust their own intuition. Neither of these is a positive result and both have lasting and cumulative effects. It would help the child to develop emotional intelligence by validating their impression, acknowledging that adults do have feelings and struggles, too, while at the same time assuring them that all will be well. The truthful answer might be: “I am having a bit of a hard time, sweetie. Thank you for noticing and for caring. Everyone struggles sometimes, right? I know I’ll get it figured out. I’m o.k.” The employee who lies on their timecard is stealing from their employer. The immediate gratification of some extra cash in their pocket is shortsighted and misguided if the goal is to be employed and to make money. The employee who can be trusted is a valuable asset and far more likely to both be employed and to be financially compensated. Couples who lie to each other detract from the potential depth of their connection to the degree that they lie. “If you tell the truth you have a relationship. If you don’t, you have an entanglement.” (Hendricks). Students who cheat on a test or plagiarize their work are lying about what they know and even who they are. The one we hurt the most with our lies: ourselves, of course. With every lie we chip away at truth and clarity; we muddy the waters. We validate that we lack the pure courage, conviction and self-confidence to speak the truth. We slip further away from discovering our true selves. Our personal power is diminished and squelched. Even when there is short-term gain, it is inconsequential in comparison to the ground that is lost. Why do we lie? At the core of it is FEAR: fear of someone being mad at us; fear of conflict; fear of getting in trouble; fear of admitting we made a mistake and appearing foolish; fear of scarcity; fear of rejection, fear of failure, and fear that we are just not good enough. Lying is characterized by guilt and denial. It even affects us physiologically. “Dishonesty…creates more energetic exhaustion because you have to ‘protect the lie’ you’ve created. Such negative mental attitudes trigger an adrenaline reaction in the physical body and frequently result in chronic exhaustion, depression and low self-esteem.” Conversely, we can “retrieve the energy” by telling the truth. (Myss)

Lying engenders doubt, mistrust, cynicism, obsessive worry, paranoia and a view of life as inherently hazardous. Behaviors such as keeping secrets, withholding information, and avoiding, dominate our lives and often results in blaming and projecting onto others. Truth is grounded; it fosters clarity, confidence, hope, security and optimism. While lying stirs angst, truth promotes a sense of peace and well-being. Then there are the lies we tell ourselves in the form of denial. 12-step programs share an acronym for the word: Don’t Even know I Am Lying. We can masterfully convince ourselves that although he flies into a rage and hits me this time, surely he will never do it again; that just having this one drink won’t ruin my sobriety; that cheating on my spouse isn’t that big of a deal – after all, what they don’t know can’t hurt them. Lies are a key component in any addiction process, and are addictive themselves. They are told in vain efforts to manipulate the truth so we won’t have to deal with difficulty, won’t have to face and feel something unpleasant, so that we can avoid and even escape consequences. Like any addiction, lies are an avoidance mechanism that ultimately results in deeper, higher and far more unpleasant messes than we ever would have incurred if we would have made the choice of telling the truth to begin with. The longer the time taken to deal directly and honestly with a situation, the more distorted and unmanageable it becomes, creating a bigger burden, which is harder to resolve. We need to understand the raw power inherent in our freedom to choose, each choice crafting the quality of our lives and emanating from us out into our world. In her poem ‘The Kookaburras’ Mary Oliver writes: “In every heart there is a coward and a procrastinator. In every heart there is a god of flowers, just waiting to stride out of a cloud and lift it’s wings.” No matter what we are faced with we can choose to align with the peace that comes from honesty. Instead of diminishing the power and beauty of the spirit within us, know as the ancients do that “The truth will set you free.” References: 1. CRYSTOLOGY

Amber

mber is a powerful healing stone. It gives the person who wears it a lovely sense of vitality. It is a beautiful, warm stone that is said to balance the emotions, clear the mind, release negative energy such as phobias and fears, and it aids in manifestation rituals. Amber has an electrical charge when rubbed. It was called “elektron” by the ancient Greeks. This is thought to be the origin of the word electricity.

Amber resonates with sacral chakra, meaning that it is a wonderful stone for enhancing one’s creativity. It links the everyday self to the spiritual self. It is known to be an effective crystal to use in protection from psychic attack. Amber connects one to their inner wisdom. When combined with other goldentoned crystals, it is a powerful stone to manifest an increase in money. Its sacral chakra centered energy makes it a highly magnetic and sensual stone. It is also worn to attract love, and increases one’s enjoyment of sensual activities. Historically women used talismans of amber carved in the images of fish, frogs and rabbits to enhance fertility. Men would wear figures of dogs, dragons or lions to fend off impotency. Powdered amber has been burned during birth to help ensure the safety of mother and infant.

Geologists define Amber as fossilized tree resin (not tree sap). Sap is the fluid that circulates through a plant’s vascular system. Resin, on the other hand, is a semi-solid amorphous (no crystal structure) organic substance that is secreted in pockets and canals through epithelial cells of the plant. It’s the really sticky stuff that after time will fossilize and harden. Hardened tree resin that is less than 100,000 years old is called Copal. Copal becomes Amber when it has finished fossilizing.

Amber has many more uses that those mentioned above. It is a beautiful stone to adorn oneself with, and can will invite a multitude of positive energies including love, abundance and success.

Copal can crack on the surface as the volatile oils (or turpenes) evaporate. Copal will dissolve in acetone, but Amber will not. Copal from Madagascar and Columbia are 250 to 10,000 years old. Amber from the Baltics and the Dominican Republic are 25 to 40 million years old. Archaeologists found many beautifully carved amber pieces in graves, dating back around 2000 B.C. or before. Amber has even been discovered in Egyptian tombs... including that of Tutankhamen.

Baltic Amber is highly prized for its high quality. Polish craftsmen have long been reputed for making beautifully crafted pieces from it. Green amber may be natural, but most green amber jewelry sold is made from stone that has been through a process that creates the color artificially.

Amber is reputed to cleanse the blood, as well as helping to move energy around the body. It has been used to ease pain in joints and ligaments. Amber necklaces are also a popular choice for many parents, who used them to help soothe teething pain in infants and toddlers. This is accomplished by an analgesic substance called succinic acid, which is released by the beads in response to the warmth of the child’s body and absorbed through the skin. Amber is also considered a protective stone and has been used by parents of many cultures to safeguard their children’s overall wellbeing. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

It is associated with both the naval and solar plexus chakras. It supports clearing of problems associated with the navel chakra, and is said to draw physical illness out of the spleen, liver and other organs in the stomach area. It can also be used to aid emotional healing and creates a more positive outlook on life.

Amber is associated with solar energy, and the energy of the Mother Goddesses. It is a protective stone that resonates with the fire element. It is also associated with the fifth element, Akasha, which binds the other four elements, and is sometimes considered the original source of them. In ancient China, it was believed to carry the very essence of life itself. Because amber is a fossil it is associated with time, cycles and longevity.

n recent years, “Energy Gels” have been emerging as a trendy new food product, marketed to athletes in order to increase endurance and replenish energy stores in the body. Are these products worth all the hype? Let’s look closer at four popular products.

Ingredients: Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Honey, Potassium Citrate, Natural Flavor, Citric Acid, Sodium Chloride.

If you take one look at these ingredient lists, you can see they all have one thing in common: lots of concentrated sweetener. The first product by Gatorade is by far the least healthy, with its abundance of chemical sweeteners, dyes and preservatives such as carageenan, all of which have been shown to contribute to adverse health effects.

was 50 percent greater in the trained men. Maximal oxygen consumption measures aerobic capacity: the efficiency of the lungs to transfer oxygen to the blood, the capacity of the blood to carry oxygen, the power of the heart and blood vessels to deliver large quantities of blood to the muscles, and the ability of the muscles to use the oxygen. Fats cannot be burned without oxygen. Not only did these men have more enzymes to combust the fat, but they also had more oxygen to feed the fire. Researchers have since demonstrated that, after a 12-week six-day-per-week program of 45 minutes of running and cycling at a high intensity, fat combustion increased by 41 percent. This was accompanied by reduced reliance on carbohydrates.”

Fuel your workouts with real food instead of food products. Your body will thank you. Studies show that the body is more susceptible to sweet flavors when the heart rate is elevated, making the sweet flavor of the corn syrup potentially unpleasant. Furthermore, too much fructose can draw oxygen away from the muscles and contribute to stomach troubles such as diarrhea.

In other words by eating a balanced diet, and training with consistency while gradually increasing the intensity of one’s regime will, over time, give the athlete better results. Relying on concentrated sweeteners to feed one’s glucose stores is a short-term solution that only serves to make the athlete slower, fatter and broker. Fuel your workouts with real food instead of food products. Your body will thank you.

The remaining products contain mostly benign ingredients. The main trouble with these products is that they are all heavily processed and require large amounts of resource to complete the manufacture and packaging of these products. Do runners really need to guzzle colorful pouches filled with what basically amounts to glorified gooey candy? The makers of these products claim that ingesting these concentrated amounts of carbohydrates will feed glucose stores in the body, which can get depleted during high exertion activities.

References: 1. guenergy.com/gu-energy-gel-201 2. marathonguide.com/training/articles/MandBFuelOnFat.cfm 3. runnersconnect.net/running-nutrition-articles/energy-gelreview/

But here is some more information to consider. There are two main sources of fuel for exercise: carbohydrates and fats. The energy supply from carbohydrate and fat is inversely related. High rates of carbohydrate use reduces combustion of fat. Carbohydrates are used preferentially at very high efforts, such as a 5K race, or at low fitness levels when fat metabolism is underdeveloped.

Conversely, when the body relies on fat for fuel, the combustion of carbohydrates goes down, thus “sparing” carbohydrates. This benefits performance in endurance events. A person becomes very fatigued when they run too low on carbohydrates. The body stores a very limited amount of carbohydrate (glycogen). Compare this with a relatively unlimited supply of fat. Even an athlete with only 6 percent body fat will have enough fat to fuel exercise lasting for many hours. When one relies on fat instead of carbohydrates, more energy is generated and one’s natural carbohydrate supply lasts longer. In an article by Deborah Schulman Ph.D. for Marathon guide she notes, “Research conducted at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden during the 1980s showed that, within the leg muscles of highly trained endurance men, the activity of enzymes that break down fats was 100 percent higher than in the untrained subjects. As a result, during exercise they had a much higher ability to regenerate the ATP that fuels muscular contraction than those who had a greater reliance on carbohydrates. Researchers found that the maximal oxygen consumption
