The Tracy Box Car Days Labor Day fly-in, which includes a patriotic salute to America’s Armed Forces, is the airport’s busiest day of the year.

Tracy Municipal Airport The airport has a 3,100-feet long, 75-feet wide primary bituminous surface runway that remains open in winters and is lit for night landings. Crossing grass runways are 2,590’ by 200’ and 1,825’ by 200’ and run north to south and southwest to northeast to give pilots an option in windy conditions.

How towns were named Tracy Many railroad towns were often named after someone from a railroad company. Tracy was no different. Initially called Summit, and later Shetek Station, the village was selected in 1870 in honor of John F. Tracy, a railroad magnate. Tracy was once the president of the Chicago, Rock Island and Paci ic Railroad, which transported Abraham Lincoln’s funeral car in from Washington D.C. to Spring ield, Ill. in April of 1865.

Walnut Grove

The Tracy Tornado Tree Memorial remembers the nine people who lost their lives on June 13, 1968, when an F-5 tornado struck Tracy.

Tracy Tornado Tree The Tracy Tornado Tree Park at Hwy. 14 & Fifth St. features a black marble three-sided monument dedicated to the nine people who lost their lives in the Tracy Tornado of June 13, 1968. The monument, dedicated in 2013, includes a laser print of the photo of the tornado taken by Walnut Grove native Eric Lantz, as well as a brief story about the tornado, and the names and ages of the nine victims. A clock atop each of the sides depicts the time the tornado struck the school in the heart of town. The monument is surrounded by a lower garden that is adorned with nine memorial butter lies. Beside that memorial sits the Tracy Tornado Tree Monument, which is modeled after a tree that stood at the corner of Fifth and Rowland on the day of the tornado. Grotesquely twisted and splintered by the tornado, the tree was saved as a memorial the nine victims. A steel sculpture of the Tornado Tree later replaced the badly deteriorating original. A portion of the original tree, as well as other items from the tornado, can be viewed at the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum on the west end of town on Highway 14.

Willow Lake Lutheran Church remains a stately sentinel to the faith of Norwegian immigrants who established the congregation in 1874. The whitesteeple church, northeast of Lake Shetek and South of Tracy, is the last remaining country church in the Tracy area.

Willow Lake Lutheran Church The former Willow Lake Lutheran Church is the Tracy area’s last surviving white-steeple country church. Located on a hill seven miles south and one mile east of Tracy, the church was erected by irst-generation Norwegian immigrants in 1899. The Willow Lake congregation, which was organized in 1874, disbanded in 2006, but the Friends of Willow Lake non-pro it organization was formed to preserve the country church. The Willow Lake Church is open for “hymn sings” on Sunday mornings, 10:30 a.m., on July 10 and Sept. 18.

For more information, call 507-629-3488 or email friendsofwillowlake@ gmail.com. Mary Mickelson, who donated land for the Willow Lake Church with her husband, shares several similarities with her more famous contemporary, Laura Ingalls Wilder. Both Mary and Laura were born in 1867. They were also married in the same year (1885), and died in the same year (1957). The Willow Lake Church is three miles north of Slaughter Slough, where 12 settlers lost their lives after being ambushed by Dakota warriors on August 20, 1862.

Slaughter Slough Near the intersection of County Roads 37 and 96 east of Lake Shetek, stands a lonely monument resting on three stones in the Slaughter Slough Waterfowl Production Area. On Aug. 20, 1862, Slaughter Slough was the site of a horri ic encounter between attacking Dakota warriors and a group of 34 settlers, who had led in a group from a cabin on Lake Shetek. The settlers, who were on a trail to New Ulm with a horse-drawn wagon, sought refugee in the eightfoot tall grasses of the slough, after being overtaken by a group of Dakota men on horseback. Fourteen settlers, including eight children, were killed in and around the slough and near Lake Shetek, on that day. An unknown number of Dakota also died. Twenty-one settlers managed to escape or survive the attacks, with three women and seven children taken captive. A group of 11 Teton Dakota men, at a great sacri ice to themselves, bartered for the captives’ freedom in the Dakotas and brought eight captives to U.S. military authorities at Fort Randall in November of 1862.

A mowed path allows visitors to experience the haunting beauty of Slaughter Slough.

Today, Slaughter Slough is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Waterfowl Production Area. Interpretive signs, a short trail, and the rock memorial honor the three groups connected with the 1862 tragedy. The irst stone honors the Dakota Indians, the inhabitants of the land prior to white settlement. The second honors the white settlers who came to Shetek in search of a better life. The third is for the Dakota men, who were called the “Fool Soldier Band” by their peoples, who won the captives’ freedom, but were never thanked or compensated for their efforts by the U.S. Government.

Plum Creek

Despite its modest size, this creek is one of the most well-known in the state because of its mention in the Laura Ingalls Wilder book “On the Banks of Plum Creek as well as the Little House on Prairie television series. Located near the family’s dugout site one and one-half miles north of Walnut Grove, Plum Creek is 34.5 miles long and passes through the pageant site southwest of Walnut Grove, eventually emptying into to the Cottonwood River. Visitors can wade in the water by the dugout site just as Laura and her sisters likely did many years ago. Plum Creek got its name from the many wild plum trees along is course.

Plum Creek Park/Lake Laura This picturesque 205-acre park near the pageant site was established in 1969. There’s both an Upper and Lower Plum Creek Park. The 70-unit campground located near Lake Laura in the Upper Park has private treelined settings and includes electrical and tenting sites. Cost is $27.50 per night for electric hook-ups and $22.50 per night for tents. Firewood is available. Two-night minimum stay. A sandy beach and lakeside gazebo is nearby at Lake Laura. Swimming, ishing, and canoeing are possible on the lake Motorized boats prohibited. Pan ish, bass and northern pike are stocked in the lake. A hiking path circles the lake. The Upper Park also offers a nine-hole Frisbee golf course, playground equipment, two softball ields, sand volleyball courts, and a picnic area with shelter. Look for 23 tree varieties on the “When the Prairie Whispers walking tour. The park is one mile west and one mile south of Walnut Grove on County Road 78. For more information, visit www.walnutgrove.org. For camping reservations, call 888-528-7268.

A 100-year-old steam locomotive looks like it is ready to chug into action at the End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum.

End-O-Line Railroad Park & Museum The End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum is located on the former Chicago & Northwestern branch line in Currie. The museum evolved from a 1972 4-H Community Pride project A 1901 hand-operated turntable is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only operable, manually-operated turntable in Minnesota. The turntable is so well engineered, a small group of men were able to rotate heavy steam locomotives with just human muscle power.

The Railroad Yard The railroad arrived in Currie in 1899 when the Chicago & Northwestern, Omaha Railroad constructed a line into the town. Originally, it was planned to extend the line to South Dakota. The branch line remained a dead end, because east-west rail lines already existed through nearby Tracy and Slayton. Instead, the railroad company built the turntable at this site. With the turntable in place, Currie could turn massive steam locomotives around manually and return them to Bingham Lake. The Currie Depot #1958 was originally built across from the museum site and was transferred to its current location on the grounds in 1974. In the depot is the ever-popular working H-O scale train and model city of Currie. Visitors can tour other fascinating buildings within the railroad yard. Inside the restored Engine House is a rebuilt 1875 narrow gauge Baldwin steam locomotive, along with several other interesting displays and

exhibits. Also in the yard is a Chicago & Northwestern water tower, a Section Foreman’s home, and a replica coal bunker that serves as a picnic shelter. Visitors can also see a Georgia Northern #102 engine, a 1945 Minneapolis and St. Louis Bay Window wood caboose, and a 1942 restored Grand Trunk Western caboose. There is also a Brookville diesel switcher, velocipede, and Fairmont motorcars.

The Historic Village A boardwalk guides visitors to the 1873 Sunrise District #1 country schoolhouse where students in eight grades were educated together. In the summer months, services are still conducted in an 1871 Presbyterian Church. The school and church were the irst built in Murray County. A replica of the Murray County Courthouse that was used from 1873-1889 showcases exhibits from the early Currie days, as well as artifacts from the 1891 Murray County Courthouse that was built in Slayton. The 1870 Currie General Store, the irst general store in Murray County, offers a glimpse of the goods that were sold and traded nearly 150 years ago. The Neil Currie gristmill, which the town was built around, holds the original grinding stone that was once used along Des Moines River.

Gift Shop New this year to the gift shop will be an N-Scale model train layout, including a ictitious town setting for everyone to enjoy. The shop offers clothing, books, refreshments, and souvenirs. The End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum is on the northern edge of Currie off County Highway 38. End-O-Line is open Wednesday-Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday) from Memorial weekend through Labor Day. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A scale-model railroad depicts early Currie.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and Tourist Center Since its inception in 1974, the Little House on the Prairie Museum in Walnut Grove has attracted visitors from over 100 countries and all 50 states. Because of the popularity of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books and the “Little House on the Prairie” television series, which also debuted in 1974, visitors have locked to the museum for a chance to step back in time and visualize how the Ingalls and other families of that period lived.

a Bible from the church the Ingalls family attended, historic documents, and scale models of the Ingalls television homes.

This summer, the museum again will be bustling with activity. Karen Grassle, who portrayed Caroline “Ma” Ingalls on the TV show, will appear in Walnut Grove on July 16-17 for photo and autograph sessions. Charlotte Stewart, who played the town’s school teacher, Miss Beadle in the TV series, will be appearing July 8-9-10 to promote and sign copies of her new book: “Little House in the Hollywood Hills – A Bad Girl’s Guide to Becoming Miss Beadle, Mary X and Me”

The dugout home is the same size as the one described in Laura’s book “On the Banks of Plum Creek”. Visitors can go inside the dugout and get a feeling of what life would be like to live in a 10’ x 10’ space dug into the side of a creek bank.

Author William Anderson will discuss the Ingalls’ history at the museum July 8-9-10, as well as signing autographs on his collection of Ingalls literature, including his latest work: “The Selected Letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder”. The museum offers visitors a comprehensive collection of Laura Ingalls Wilder history. See an actual quilt used by Laura and her daughter Rose,

There is also a collection of items donated by the many stars of the Little House on the Prairie TV series that have visited the museum over the years. Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant The popular Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant is now in its 39th season. Karen Grassle, who played “Ma Ingalls” on the Little House on the Prairie television series, will speak and answer questions before the pageant on July 16. Charlotte Stewart, who portrayed Miss Beadle in the TV series, will have a brief appearance prior to the July 9 pageant. The family-oriented two-act drama is based on the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Six Friday-Saturday performances are planned in July along the banks of Plum Creek near Walnut Grove. Local volunteers make up the cast and production crew. Elaborate stage sets are complemented with professional-level lighting and sound systems. The Ingalls’ dugout home, a church, school and general store are among the sets.
