End of Spring Term 2016 Review All too soon we have reached the end of an extremely short, but busy, Spring Term 2016. Despite its brevity, we have still managed to pack in a lot of exciting and educational activities. Learning at Hayton School is underpinned by encouraging children to employ our ‘8 Secrets of Success’. Here are some examples of how these secrets to success have been used throughout the term: 1 Don't Give Up: the KS1 trip to the Upfront Theatre Company, which was cancelled before Christmas because of the floods and then again in early January (much to the disappointment of us all), was finally rearranged and came to visit us in school. They not only gave a wonderful circus performance in the morning but also stayed for the rest of the day to show the children how to make their own puppets. It was definitely a day worth waiting for! 2 Try New Things: on Monday this week the Annapurna Indian Dance workshop came to Hayton for the day and taught children and teachers some dance movements linked to traditional Indian stories. Mrs Hawkswell was coaxed (mostly by the other members of staff) into joining in with the morning performance and definitely tried new things with her costume and dance moves! 3 Imagine: our visiting Shakespearean actor from “West End in Schools” involved the children in playing characters and shaping themselves into scenery as part of their class workshop, which resulted in a complete performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream at the end of the day. 4 Improve: this was the second year that we had a dressing up day involving Shakespearean characters. There was a notable improvement in the confidence of the children to act out the characters and in their approach to the concept of playing a Shakespearean role. We saw some fabulous costumes and some wonderful performing. 5 Understand Others: Yvonne, who has been our very special dinner lady for the last 14 years, has moved to Chester. The children showed their understanding of what a big step it is to make such a big change to your life by their thoughtful actions. Yvonne was extremely moved and was very sad to say goodbye to them all. 6 Push Yourself: a fantastic number of entrants pushed themselves to complete the Lanercost cross country this year. We are always impressed with the number of children who want to participate in this event and their efforts were justly reward in the excellent results. 7 Concentrate: we listened, we discussed, and came up with some fantastic work linked to Shakespeare Week. Please watch the year 1 illustrated film of Romeo and Juliet on the school website. It is amazing. 8 Work Hard: All classes are working hard to meet the demands of the new curriculum. The 8 secrets 1 for success help us develop good habits to become lifelong learners. The weather is gradually getting warmer and the days lighter. We wish you all a lovely Easter break and look forward to seeing you back for the start of the Summer Term.
