MESSAGE FROM THE

Head of School This past school year illustrated so perfectly what it means to be part of the Harvey community. Our students continue to shine in the classroom, on the playing fields, and on the stage, bringing home athletic championships and robotics awards and showcasing quality fine arts, music, and theater in The Walker Center for the Arts. Our Upper School students formed learning communities to take a deep dive into various areas of study, while our Middle Schoolers took important steps toward becoming more engaged global citizens. Once again, Harvey families and alumni gave generously throughout the year and exceeded our ambitious Annual Fund goal of $1 million to support faculty, students, and programs. Thank you to all our donors, and to those who attended and supported our highly successful benefit, A Night in Casablanca. Your generosity makes a significant difference in the lives of Harvey students and faculty and strengthens our signature academics, arts, and athletics offerings. The Class of 2019 has headed off to an impressive array of colleges and universities, where they will challenge themselves as they prepare for their place in the larger world. As a parting gift, senior families added more than $400,000 to the Weil House & Barn Complex fundraising initiative which started with the class of 2018. With their help, we have passed the halfway mark in this vital facility renovation. The project will transform the campus entrance into a welcoming stop for visitors to Harvey and will ultimately provide additional classroom and meeting space for our community. We are also very thankful for the 8th Grade Class Gift of $25,000, the largest 8th grade class gift ever, which provided new lockers in the Middle School. Stop by this fall so that we can share all of our exciting plans. Your generosity comes from the heart, and that is truly what makes Harvey such a strong community.

William J. Knauer, Head of School

MESSAGE FROM THE

Parent Association On behalf of the Parent Association, we would like to thank everyone for making the 2018–19 school year a wonderful success. With the incredible support of the Harvey staff and administration, the PA was able to raise significant funds that are critical to supporting the programs and curriculum enhancements that are the hallmarks of an innovative Harvey education. As we continue to embrace the “I AM HARVEY” theme, we achieved nearly 100% participation and support from our generous parent body. Dedicated parent volunteers attended and assisted in the PA initiatives throughout the year, including our largest fundraising effort, A Night in Casablanca held in May, which generated nearly $400,000 for the Annual Fund. Thank you again to everyone who attended and participated this year. We are indebted to you for your time, talents and commitment to The Harvey School. Warmly, Lydia Hellinger, President, Parent Association

FROM LAURA PRICHARD Dear Harvey Friends,

For as long as I can remember, an important idea was instilled in me as a guide for living a purposeful life — “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required.”— And while I’ve tried to put this idea into action, this concept seems somewhat inadequate. I believe that most people recognize that giving to others goes far beyond an obligation or expectation. Helping others and making an impact in our community are not just privileges but a means to happiness. There is science around this idea now, and I think we can all feel great pride in the collective accomplishments of our community this past year. Over the past twenty years, there have been many stories told to me by parents who feel that their children were given rare opportunities to thrive and discover their passions of Harvey in a way that couldn’t have been done anywhere else. This gratitude and appreciation for the “transformation” (a term I heard often) runs deep and takes many forms. Yet one constant is that Harvey families give generously and from their heart, so that they can in turn make a difference for kids and teachers and benefit future generations. Whether it’s working with other 8th-grade families to bring new lockers to the Middle School, or participating in our annual benefit to support our financial aid program, Harvey parents, alumni, and friends go above and beyond to make our little community as strong as it can be. And it feels good! And what a year it was. Our Annual Fund results, for the first time ever, exceeded the $1 million mark. That’s an amazing accomplishment for a school of our size and it’s a testament to the confidence of our entire community. A big “Thank you” goes to all the members of the Development Committee, Benefit Committees, and phonathon volunteers; to Annual Fund Chairs Kevin Durkin and Jerri-Lynn Galgano; and Benefit Chairs Melissa Gross and Elizabeth Pickel, for their teamwork and perseverance. We are truly awed by the coordination of the efforts of our Harvey Parent Association, our Alumni Association, and an unprecedented number of volunteers all working on behalf of our students. Another ambitious project, now in its second year, is the renovation of the Weil House and Barn Complex which will both transform the campus entrance and provide much-needed classroom space. Again, our community rallied, helping us to exceed our $1 million annual goal which included key support from our senior class families. So many of the Weil House & Barn contributors recognize how important this project is to the future of Harvey and the next generation of families. It’s been a great honor to be part of this generous and engaged community for so many years. Working alongside Susie Danziger, Harvey’s new Development Director, the development team and the faculty and staff at Harvey has inspired me beyond words. I have every confidence that the future of Harvey is in great hands. Thank you all! Sincerely, Laura Prichard 4

Under the leadership of Tracey Davies, Deirdre Glascott, Stephanie King, and Vivien Levy, the Class of 2019 continued the 18-year tradition of senior families making a meaningful parting gift to the School upon graduation. This year’s gift was allocated to the renovation of the Weil House & Barn Complex. This critical first step in Harvey’s Long-Range Strategic Campus Master Plan will transform the entrance to campus, provide a welcoming space for prospective families and alumni to meet and gather, and ultimately create additional classroom space in Sylvan Hall. Ways of Giving Trustees, parents, past parents, alumni, faculty, and grandparents can demonstrate their commitment to The Harvey School with contributions of many kinds:

Annual Fund Every year, the Annual Fund raises funds to support daily operations and help balance the budget. These funds make it possible for The Harvey School to attract and retain an outstanding faculty, to support the academic program, to provide tuition assistance to some of our families, and to do much more. Gifts to the Annual Fund are outright gifts which are fully deductible for income tax purposes. These gifts can be made in three ways: • Cash is the simplest way to give and goes to work immediately for students and teachers. • Checks and credit cards are common ways to give and you can do so on our website’s secure portal. • Appreciated securities enable the donor to take a tax deduction on the full value of the gift and avoid capital gains on the transfer. In many instances; the real cost to the donor is far less than writing a check. • Matching gift contributions from employers total nearly $60,000 each year. Please determine whether your employer or your spouse’s employer has such a program. If so, donors will be credited with the total combined gift in Harvey’s Annual Report. If you need assistance, please contact Effie Afentoulides at extension 150.

Events The Harvey Parent Association sponsors an annual benefit and auction each spring. In addition to being a wonderful way to meet new friends and get involved, last year’s benefit, “A Night in Casablanca,” was fun and incredibly successful. All proceeds are added to the operating budget and help to meet our annual expenses.

24

Planned Gifts These gifts include bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance, real estate, or other tangible property. Depending on the donor’s circumstances, a planned gift may not only greatly benefit The Harvey School but may also provide significant tax advantages for the donor and his or her family.

Herbert Carter Legacy Society All who have made provisions in their will for The Harvey School will be included in this listing going forward. These generous bequests provide financial security and ensure the long-term health of the school.

Laurence Baschkin ’77 Pieter Catlow ’73 Dan Chapman ’73 John G. Davis ’50 Peter Duncan ’65 Ronald Duncan Rowena and Barry W. Fenstermacher John French ’47 Paul A. Hollos ’52 Gene S. Lasdon Jeannette and Jeffrey Lasdon Patrick O. Peterkin ’78 Gerald J. Pollack Dawn Stuttig

Charitable Trusts These are two popular ways to invest in The Harvey School’s future. • Charitable remainder trusts place assets in trust for the benefit of the school, while a fixed percentage of the trust or annuity is paid out to the donor, a family member or other beneficiary. The donor may choose to have income paid for the life of a beneficiary or for a certain number of years. At the end of this time, these assets are transferred to The Harvey School. • Charitable lead trusts are established by transferring cash or other assets to a trustee, who invests the amount transferred and pays income to Harvey for a period designated by the donor. When the trust terminates, the principal is transferred to a donor’s children or grandchildren at what may be significant gift and estate tax savings. For further information please contact: Susie Danziger, Director of Development sdanziger@harveyschool.org or 914.232.3161 ext. 111

Bequests can take many forms, including a specific dollar amount or a portion of what remains of an estate after obligations to others are fulfilled. Donors may receive generous tax reductions for themselves and their heirs by naming The Harvey School as a beneficiary of an estate or trust. Unrestricted bequests are particularly welcomed since they provide flexibility to the school’s trustees to use the gift in whatever way is needed most. We recognize, however, that many donors have specific interests that they want to encourage and support. Gifts for specific purposes should be described as broadly as possible. For example, a donor may want to leave a gift restricted for scholarships, faculty support, or a particular program. The donor’s attorney or estate planner as well as a Harvey School representative should be consulted to accommodate individual circumstances. ANNUAL REPORT 2018–2019

All About Endowment A school endowment is a pool of funds, often donated, which is invested for the purpose of generating consistent interest income for the institution. Our endowment income is vital to support a variety of programs within the school’s operating budget. Harvey’s total endowment, including the Ronald Duncan Trust, has grown to more than $6 million as of June 2019. Within the endowment, there are restricted and unrestricted funds. To discuss how individual or family interests may match a need at Harvey, please contact Susie Danziger at sdanziger@harveyschool.org.

GENERAL ENDOWMENT FUNDS Unrestricted Funds The Ronald Duncan Trust was established in 1991 by a former teacher, Ronald Duncan, who left a bequest to Harvey in his will. Trustees outside the school are entrusted to remit to Harvey 5% annually of fair market value. Restricted Funds

The David M. Muntner Memorial Fund was established in memory of David M. Muntner, husband of Sally Breckenridge, Director of Alumni Relations, and father of Harold Muntner ’06. This fund supports an annual award given at graduation to an outstanding technical theater student. The 2019 recipient of the David M. Munter Memorial Award was Mae Parker ’19.

The Justin McCarthy ’91 Memorial Fund was established in memory of Justin McCarthy, Class of 1991, who was killed in the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center. His family and friends have made contributions to help beautify the Harvey campus each year.
