Welcome... I am extremely proud to introduce our third season under the collective identity of Harrogate Theatres, which sees another jam-packed season of live entertainment. From theatre classics to the cutting edge, breathtaking choral music to jazz legends, famous faces to festive entertainment for all the family, I’m confident you’ll find many reasons to round up your friends and family and enjoy some of these great shows. All points north this Autumn with our celebration of Northern theatre kicking off this extra special season. We are extremely lucky to be working in partnership with three very distinctive theatre companies to create some brand new pieces of work; North Country Theatre breathes life into Yorkshire-born J.S. Fletcher’s thrilling short story The Lighthouse on Shivering Sands, while Reform Theatre collaborates with Nick Lane on his gritty new play Seconds Out. In addition, we are very excited to be forging a new relationship with Northern Broadsides on its new production of A Government Inspector, a Yorkshire reworking of Nikolai Gogol’s classic play. Harrogate Comedy Festival returns for its fourth year and it's bigger and better than ever with tickets already selling fast. With 50 comedians performing in 14 days across 4 venues, the biggest names in British comedy are joined by the sharpest political comedic minds, sketch comedy, workshops and cabaret.

so you know where each event takes place.

English Touring Opera presents a trio of starkly different works to thrill those new to opera, and delight the more seasoned fan. Alongside our truly traditional pantomime Jack & the Beanstalk, there is also plenty of other live entertainment to keep you busy throughout the festive season. If you haven’t had a chance to see a show at the Royal Hall, I strongly urge you to. An altogether different experience to our equally beautiful Victorian theatre, the stunning surroundings of the recently refurbished Kursaal transport you back in time to a bygone era of Harrogate. Or perhaps you are yet to discover the joys of Harrogate Studio Theatre, an ever-changing space that hosts some of the best emerging companies this side of the Edinburgh Festival. Whatever you decide to come to see, I hope you enjoy it. I look forward to welcoming you to Harrogate Theatres very soon.

All Points North This Autumn Harrogate Theatres will be collaborating with three distinctive Yorkshire theatre companies to present a unique season of World Premiere productions. Each of the three companies celebrate their Northern roots by working with directors, adaptors, playwrights and actors who reside or hail from Yorkshire. We are extremely proud to be playing a part in bringing these three diverse shows to the stage and giving you the opportunity of seeing them first before they all head off on national tours.

HARROGATE THEATRE

Fri 7 – Sat 22 Sept

A Government Inspector Adapted by Deborah McAndrew from the original play by Nikolai Gogol Directed and Composed by Conrad Nelson Presented by Northern Broadsides in partnership with Harrogate Theatres ‘Where there’s muck there’s brass’… and this hysterically funny tale of misdeeds, misadventure and mistaken identity has plenty of both. In a small Pennine town a flash stranger is mistaken for the government inspector. The town’s unscrupulous councillors, fearing discovery of their corrupt goings-on, do all they can to ingratiate themselves. Bribes, backhanders and brown envelopes abound and the stranger, who has an eye for a quick buck, takes full advantage with hilarious results. No theatre company is better placed to breathe life and vigour into this barmy story than Halifax based Northern Broadsides, one of the

country’s finest and best-loved touring theatre companies. If you like your humour broad, your references topical, your heart warmed and your brass ‘live’, look no further than A Government Inspector. Absurdly funny, clever and strangely familiar, you’ll never trust your local authority again… if you ever did that is! The cast includes Harrogate Theatre favourites Andy Cryer (Teechers, Ghosts) and Howard Chadwick (Broken Time, Beauty & The Beast)

Seconds Out Written by Nick Lane Directed by Keith Hukin Presented by Reform Theatre Company in association with Harrogate Theatres “You never forget your first fight. And you shouldn’t, either.” Tom and Simon have been mates since school; shared everything – homework, cars, girlfriends; you name it, they’ve both had their hands on it. But whilst Sy has always played it safe, Tom likes to push things to extremes... with occasionally violent repercussions. After an ill-advised evening with the baby sister of local nutcase Mark Flynn, Sy is starting to worry if Tom might have bitten off more than he can chew. He needs protection. He needs to get out of town. And then he meets Foster. A former boxer with a left hook to die for (or from), Foster takes Tom under his wing. But is there more to his interest than meets the eye? tickets: All £12

8

And why won’t he talk about his past? Partly inspired by true events, Reform Theatre is proud to bring you a thrilling new play from the writer of My Favourite Summer and Housebound. Based in Sheffield, Harrogate Theatre Associate Company Reform Theatre predominantly creates and stages work by Northern playwrights and emerging writers.

The Lighthouse On Shivering Sands Adapted by Nobby Dimon from the short story by J.S. Fletcher Directed by Nobby Dimon Presented by North Country Theatre & Harrogate Theatres Another hilarious ripping yarn from the makers of The 39 Steps, A Blood Wedding in Wensleydale and The Rocking Horse Winner. Strange tales were told of Shivering Sands – of lighthouse keepers gone mad, mermaids and sea monsters, disappearances and hauntings. None of that scared Mordechai Chiddock, but had he known that Jezreel Cornish was one of the keepers he’d never have set foot on that cursed rock. And now the supply boat would not be back for a month and Chiddock knew that either he or Cornish would be dead long before then.

Over the last 15 years from its base in Richmond, North Country Theatre has created many tongue in cheek theatrical adaptations of works by great adventure writers such as Conan Doyle and Kipling. Now they turn their attention to spooky sea faring horror – sun, sea, sand and strangled laughter awaits. Born in Halifax, J.S. Fletcher is Yorkshire’s most prolific novelist. During his time as a Yorkshire Post journalist in the 1920s and 30s he wrote more than 100 novels – mostly detective stories and thrillers.

Debussy: A Passionate Life With Robert Powell & Liza Goddard 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Claude Debussy – the extraordinary French composer and revolutionary genius who lived for love and attracted drama and scandal wherever he went. Charismatic, fascinating, outrageously unconventional, possessed of great charm and wit, he was a true Bohemian, equally at home in the lowlife nightclubs of Montmartre as in the aristocratic salons of Parisian society.

Featuring celebrated actors Robert Powell and Liza Goddard, this evening brings to life Debussy’s own brilliantly vivid, sometimes moving and often humorous writings and those of his friends (and enemies). This turbulent and passionate homage to his life will be accompanied by musical interludes of some of Debussy’s most treasured works arranged for flute and piano, alongside music from his contemporaries including Satie, Bach and Stravinsky.

The Levellers: Acoustic Fresh from the release of their tenth studio album, folk-rock band The Levellers stop off at Harrogate’s Royal Hall as part of their exclusive Autumn tour. Already being heralded as their most accomplished album to date, Static On The Airwaves is the sound of a band whose incisive lyrics, innate musicality and passion have continued to improve rather than diminish in nearly a quarter of a century of writing, recording and performing. The Levellers have long been and still are, one of the best live bands around. Their outstanding back catalogue of recorded music is often overlooked but the group sold more platinum, gold and silver albums in the 1990s than any other act. The Levellers: Acoustic is two sets featuring live favourites and hits from their previous studio albums plus a few tracks from their new album.

“It's not often that a band sounds most convincing in a stripped-down setting, but The Levellers pulled it off ” NME

Bones Written by Jane Upton Presented by Fifth Word in association with Nottingham Playhouse Nineteen-year-old Mark is living a life he never signed up for. Heavy with the weight of caring for his broken mum and her baby, and pining for a past of Panda Pops, eggy bread and Brian Clough, Mark knows he has to do something drastic – but will he make a chilling choice that will change things forever? An achingly honest portrayal of a boy struggling to find his place in a world that doesn’t want him, Bones will break your heart, spit you out and then make you wonder why you cared in the first place. Writers’ Guild Award winners Fifth Word are a UK touring company, based in the Midlands. Their passion is for new writing and the use of multimedia technology to bring fresh, exciting work to audiences.

M R James Ghost Stories

Presented by Michael Sabbaton

2012 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of M R James, the master of the English ghost story. To celebrate, Nunkie Theatre is bringing four of his most eeriest and most entertaining stories to Harrogate in two thrilling new one-man shows.

Presented by Nunkie Theatre

Michael Sabbaton presents two classic horrors based on the strange tales of H.P. Lovecraft – the 20th century master of weird fiction. In The Temple, the finding of a strange, ivory carved head forces the Commander of the U-29 to pit his sanity against a rising evil as the stricken U-boat and crew slowly become possessed. The Call of Cthulhu tells three related tales concerning an ancient, malevolent god residing in the depths of the ocean and in the slumbering minds of men, waiting for ultimate dominion. Full of subtle terror, Sabbaton weaves these character driven tales into one-man tapestries of atmospheric and intimate theatre.

“An arresting performance” The Scotsman

“Captivating” The British Theatre Guide

A Warning to the Curious (Mon 22 Oct) sees a young archaeologist haunted and hunted by the guardian of an ancient treasure. It is paired with Lost Hearts, which offers one of James’s most memorable villains, the predatory scholar Mr Abney. In Count Magnus (Tue 23 Oct) a travel-writer’s over-inquisitiveness leads to a breathless, diabolical chase from darkest Sweden to rural Essex. It is paired with Number 13, where a hotel room with the famously unlucky number, conceals a ghastly and baffling secret.

Handa’s Surprise

Hymn

As leader of Mott The Hoople as well as a highly renowned solo artist, Ian Hunter has produced a matchless repertoire of music combining homage, honesty and killer hooks.

Presented by Little Angel Theatre

Presented by The Medici String Quartet With Alex Jennings Words by Alan Bennett

With the group, he quickly established himself as an incredibly inventive songwriter creating gritty and thought-provoking songs, which paved the way for the original wave of punk rock.

He has led 19 expeditions to the Himalayas, succeeded in climbing Mount Everest at the age of 50, made the first ascent of the South Face of Annapurna in 1960 when no other Himalayan wall had been climbed and made the first British ascent of the South West pillar of the Drus.

He's also found great success as a solo artist with an eclectic catalogue of superbly intelligent albums and an immensely dedicated following.

With original images and raw footage from some of his earliest expeditions, this is a rare opportunity to hear about some of the greatest expeditions of the twentieth century.

Philadelphia Examiner

“Seeing Ian Hunter live for the first time or the 25th time is always a treat”

The enthralling Little Angel who specialise in creating spellbinding theatre for young audiences make a welcome return with Handa's Surprise. Travel to Kenya and follow in Handa’s footsteps as she journeys to see her best friend Akeyo, in the next village. Handa is taking 7 delicious fruits as a surprise – but 7 different animals have 7 very different ideas… could you resist the sweetsmelling guava? How about a ripe red mango or a tangy purple passion fruit?

Olivier Award-winning theatre, TV and film actor Alex Jennings gives voice to Alan Bennett’s early experiences of music: the hymns he learned as a boy, the violin his father never managed to teach him and the concerts he went to in Leeds.

A blend of physical performance, puppetry, live music and song combine to create a magical production with audience participation. Come and share in the magical tangerine surprise!

The show was written for acclaimed ensemble The Medici Quartet who will join Jennings onstage, performing an illustrative suite for strings composed by celebrated film composer George Fenton (Mrs Henderson Presents, The History Boys, Frozen Planet). Musical references include Elgar, Delius and several well-known hymns.

“A short, sunshiny little show with a delicious citrus finish” Time Out

The show toured to various festivals around the country and was performed in front of the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace.

Eddi Reader

John Shuttleworth

Regular star of Channel 4’s Stand Up for the Week and one of comedy’s hottest properties, Paul Chowdhry hits the road with his new solo show What’s Happening White People?

It has been over a year since his father died, and Sean is dealing with his death in a way that only Sean can. It has always been Sean’s willingness to tackle difficult topics head-on, with humour that makes him shine.

Brit Award-winning Eddi Reader was thrown into the limelight with Fairground Attraction and their single ‘Perfect’ and album ‘First of a Million Kisses’, which both topped the British charts. However, it has been her subsequent solo albums that have signalled her increasing ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them all very much her own.

The inimitable John Shuttleworth is back as part of his national tour.

Reader brings all forms of song to joyous life with depth and quality, making her one of contemporary British music’s most thrilling and affecting performers.

Star of Radio 4’s The Shuttleworth’s, TV’s 500 Bus Stops and It’s Nice Up North early booking is almost certainly recommended.

Taking inspiration from stand-up legends such as George Carlin, Richard Pryor and Sam Kinison, Chowdhry’s highly charged, dryly observational humour taps into the multicultural diversity of contemporary Britain. With more than 3 million YouTube hits to his name – catch him here before he hits the big time.

“A star in the making” The Daily Telegraph

Still edgy, still dark, Life Becomes Noises is an hilarious yet poignant tale and a beautiful insight into the lighter side of dying and getting older. Sean’s ever evolving stand-up goes to places that comedy rarely goes, highlighting how ridiculous life is and how quickly it can be taken away. Best known to TV audiences for Never Mind the Buzzcocks and the critically acclaimed Sean’s Show, Sean’s back at Harrogate Theatre doing what he does best – explosive and quick-fire stand-up.

“One of Scotland’s greatest national treasures and most vibrant natural resources. The only thing wrong with the show was that it had to end sometime” The Scotsman

This time the Sony and Perrier nominated comic character from the talented Graham Fellows ventures beyond the garden gate to tread the mean streets of Britain on a mission to discover which is better: city life or country living? Supermarket or village shop?

A trio of enthralling and theatrical operas

Fri 2 nov

Albert Herring HARROGATE THEATRE

Thur 1 nov

The Lighthouse Peter Maxwell Davies Presented by English Touring Opera An opera thriller based on the true story of the three Flannan Isle lighthouse keepers who disappeared over Christmas 1900, The Lighthouse is already a music theatre classic performed all over the world. Maxwell Davies’ score pulsates with energy and light, and conjures perfectly the claustrophobia of the fogbound island. American director Ted Huffman’s new production, with three remarkable actors/opera singers, promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

HARROGATE THEATRE

The banjo-accompanied ballads, hymn-inspired movements and powerful, percussive conclusion, make this modern English music at its most theatrically effective. New production sung in English Running time: 1 hour and 45 minutes

Benjamin Britten Presented by English Touring Opera Albert Herring has become a classic, comic depiction of English village life. Full of character and humour, it tells the tale of election by village committee of a shy local lad in a grocer’s shop as May King – a title normally awarded as May Queen to a virtuous girl, but no one matches up to the exacting standards of virtue held by Lady Billows. Naturally, the crowning of the May King does not go quite as planned, and poor (or lucky) Albert Herring ends up straying rather far from the path of virtue. A genuinely hilarious satire with undertones of melancholy, Albert Herring is a village masterpiece, with a score of great beauty. English Touring Opera's new production is conducted by Britten expert Michael Rosewell and directed by Christopher Rolls. New production sung in English Running time: 2 hour and 15 minutes

HARROGATE THEATRE

The Emperor of Atlantis Viktor Ullmann Presented by English Touring Opera In a concentration camp in 1944, an extraordinary opera was created. Though faced with transportation, Viktor Ullmann and his fellow artists made a stylish comedy in which Death, appalled by mass killing, goes on strike. Then there is love and longing – until Emperor Overall agrees to die himself. This short masterpiece celebrates of humanity – and though its first performance was banned and its creators murdered, the surviving opera shines. Influenced by Bach and other German composers, Ullmann’s music also has some of the character of the dance hall. English Touring Opera pairs it with a staging of Bach’s extraordinary cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden. The evening starts at 7.30pm with Towards an Unknown Port, a ten-minute cycle of songs in response to the opera, followed by a free pre-show talk. After a short interval, the main performance of The Emperor of Atlantis will commence at Wed 2 & Fri 4 May 7.45pm 8.15pm. New production sung in English Running time: 2 hour and 5 minutes

Rhod Gilbert

Fascinating Aïda

Following several sell-out UK tours and best-selling stand-up DVDs, multi award-winning Welsh wonder Rhod Gilbert is back on the road with a brand new live show. A regular on Live At The Apollo and with his own BBC1 show Ask Rhod Gilbert, one of the world’s hottest comedians returns to Harrogate.

Continuing their smash-hit sell-out tour, the three times Olivier Award nominated and worldwide internet sensation Fascinating Aïda return to prove that they are still Britain’s best comedy cabaret trio.

His stand-up rants on life’s minor irritations are legendary, but this year, he’s a more mellow fellow altogether. He’s now so laid-back he even let someone tattoo a Battenberg on him. Will the new, chilled-out Rhod get his girl and live happily ever after, or will it be microwaved baked potato for one again? Could it be the Mr Angry of comedy as you’ve never seen him before?

“One of the best comedians anywhere in the world”

This show includes several numbers hot off the press, plus a few old favourites, including their infamous anthem to budget travel, ‘Cheap Flights’ (8 million plus hits on YouTube), as well as the ‘Dogging Song’, a fond homage to the joys of al fresco fornification. Take heed of the Mail On Sunday and “see them before you die otherwise your life will have been meaningless.”

Long before Bob Dylan and the folk-inspired protest singers of the 1960s, there was Woody Guthrie, a troubadour of backwoods America who believed in “singing for the plain folks and getting tough with the rich folks”. Part music, part spoken word, Woody Sez weaves together Guthrie’s songs with excerpts from articles he wrote for the leftist newspaper The People’s World to create a portrait of a true American hero, a man who would “always be there whenever working folks fight for their rights”. Charismatic Broadway and recording artist David Lutken, who plays the title role, is joined by three multi-talented folk musicians collected from the four corners of America to bring Guthrie’s music to life with twin fiddles, guitars, bass, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, dobro and beautiful

The Lock In

Presented by the Grand Opera of Belarus

Join the Fosters Comedy Award-winner and star of loads of stuff on telly as he brings his latest stand-up show Posturing Delivery to Harrogate Theatre.

Following their barnstorming performance of Time Gentlemen Please, the UK’s number one folk and hip-hop dance extravaganza – The Demon Barbers – make a welcome return with a newly polished version of their critically acclaimed spectacular.

Treat your loved one this Valentine’s Day to one of the most romantic operas ever written in the sumptuous surroundings of the Royal Hall. When Mimi and Rodolfo meet, they fall hopelessly for each other – but the course of true love rarely runs smoothly and Puccini’s passionate and evocative music carries them from heart-stopping romance to heart-breaking loss as their story tumbles towards its conclusion. One of the world’s favourite operas, La Bohéme has inspired many a love story and perfectly captures the passion and the pain of being young, poor, and in love. Presented by the critically acclaimed Grand Opera of Belarus – one of three theatres to receive the Bolshoi status – along with a live orchestra, La Bohéme is the perfect way to spend Valentine’s Day.

In his most outrageous show yet Russell poses two important questions: What if I’m one of the guys who never has a baby? Why is this not a ‘male subject’? He then plans to give birth, live on stage, then raise it – in front of you. Come along!

“A seriously good comedian” The Times

“Extremely funny, poignant and fuelled by real intelligence and passion” Time Out

It’s back to The Fighting Cocks pub ‘after hours’ where a group of traditional folk dancers lock horns with some young hip-hop dancers. The skill, speed and athleticism of the dancers on both sides soon wins the others over as the old and new are brought together in an exciting and dynamic dance-off. Sword dances are performed with snooker-cues, pub bouncers dance the Morris and B-boys flirt with clog girls. Given how well last year’s show went down, early booking is highly recommended.

“A consistently lively entertaining music and dance performance virtually guaranteed to raise weary spirits and send an audience home smiling”

HARROGATE THEATRE

Sugar Daddies Directed by Robin Herford Presented by Oldham Coliseum Theatre in association with Harrogate Theatres Following the hugely successful productions of The Hound of the Baskervilles and Private Lives we once again team up with the excellent Oldham Coliseum Theatre to present Alan Ayckbourn’s Sugar Daddies. Upon rescuing “Uncle” Val from a hit and run accident, naïve Sasha is initially thrilled by his presents of gratitude and tokens of affection, but as she becomes more and more drawn into a sinister world she never knew existed, can Sasha remain true to herself, or will her sugar daddy ultimately destroy her?

Premiered in 2003, Ayckbourn’s 63rd play marked the hugely popular playwright’s transformation from social observer to impassioned moralist, still retaining all his classic wit and humour. This production is directed by Robin Herford, who is best known as the director of Stephen Mallatratt’s unanimously acclaimed stage adaptation of The Woman In Black, which is still running in the West End after 21 years.

Courtney Pine

Richard Herring

It’s more than two decades since Courtney Pine released his shock-and-awe debut album that put contemporary jazz in the British Top 40 album charts for the first time. Pine’s debut was a feverish statement of intent, and to anyone around at the time it’s still profoundly redolent of the excitement surrounding British jazz’s revitalisation.

Celebrated comedian Richard Herring returns with his brand new show about men and their appendage.

Nothing since has distracted Courtney from a very personal journey that has provided the soundscape to a tour of his influences and life experiences. It’s a combination that’s come to characterise the Courtney Pine sound – an inclusive vision of a living and breathing contemporary UK jazz. And now with his latest, 13th album to date, he takes another step forward whilst celebrating the past to create a set that pays respect to his Caribbean musical heritage. As eclectic in its musical range as it is consistent in joyous danceability, Courtney is sounding as much an inspiration as ever.

It’s an object of shame and pride; it inspires laughter and fear; it’s a symbol of power, yet it’s incredibly fragile; it can be a pound of flesh or an ounce of winkles, it can be used to express both love and hate; it creates life and it can condemn us to death. How can one tiny flap of sponge and sinew be all these things? Richard Herring intends to find out in this tenth anniversary update of his critically acclaimed show.

“Man’s answer to the Vagina Monologues” The Guardian

“An impassioned and thoughtful disquisition on masculinity, cultural identity and sexual anthropology” The Observer

Expect to be on your feet!

“A thrilling musical and intellectual journey. As ever, it's inspirational”

God’s Official Written by Robert Farquhar Presented by Reform Theatre Company in association with Harrogate Theatres From the company who brought you My Favourite Summer, Seconds Out and Like a Virgin comes God’s Official.

Love, passion and friendship get the red card in this very funny look at what could have been – on and off the pitch – for all life’s dreamers.

Cliff and Degsy are devastated that a dodgy refereeing decision has condemned their beloved team to relegation. Seeking retribution and fair play, the lads abduct the referee. The ransom? Admitting his mistake and playing the game again.

“You know a true comic playwright has arrived when the audience start laughing before the actors tell the jokes” The Guardian

As their half-baked plan goes increasingly awry, they soon realise that the referee they’ve decided to kidnap is even more annoying off the pitch than he is on it. Full time beckons – will the clueless duo get the victory they’d hoped for, or have they scored a spectacular own goal?

Seamlessly synchronizing live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation, this is a wickedly twisted new tale from the multiple awardwinning company.

This inventive and gripping comedy features just three actors playing more than 20 roles in 80 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. Brimming with unfeasibly quick costume changes, stupidly surreal characters and wonderfully daft jokes, What The Dickens? is the most absurd contribution to the Dickens bicentenary you could hope to see.
