mention it always falls on the weekend closest to his birthday? But he is a very good sport. This month, Hanna, Haylee and I will be participating in our 5th Princess weekend. Ten-year-old Haylee takes her running fairly seriously. She is going to be running her second 10K, and although she’s not fast enough to set any records, she has been training pretty faithfully.
Parent to Parent Ever since my daughters and I discovered Disney races, my husband has had the distinct pleasure of spending his birthday weekend at Walt Disney World at the same time as the entire resort is overrun by thousands and thousands of “princesses” for the Princess Half Marathon weekend. Sometimes, he even runs the 5K with us, but usually, he is just a spectator, photographer, and chauffeur. Did I
Fourteen-year-old Hanna, on the other hand, primarily likes to run Disney races because they have really cool medals. And since the Half Marathon has the best medal, and she is now old enough to participate, that’s what she will be running (on her dad’s actual birthday). Like Haylee, she too has been training, but unlike Haylee, she takes the “walk breaks” far more seriously than she does her actual running. She likes to run for about 30 seconds at a time before taking a 30 second (or longer) walk break. So at that pace, her training runs take a very long time! Thankfully Disney has a pretty generous time limit, so she won’t have any problem getting her coveted medal, but I have a feeling that if you throw in a bathroom break or two (she takes at least two during a long run) and a picture in front of the castle, it’s going to take us most of that three and a half hour time limit.
And my lucky husband gets to wake up early to come out and cheer for us on his birthday. He’ll definitely be there on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom (about halfway through the race) and at the finish line to cheer, take pictures, and drive us back to our hotel. I’m sure there is nothing he would rather be doing that morning! Until next time,
