General Information Expectations at Camp

You will experience group living by sharing living quarters with other girls in a camp community. Everyone is expected to help take care of camp by dividing up the camp chores (kapers). You will participate in ageappropriate all-camp kapers (flag ceremony, picking up litter from the ground, and prepping the dining area before and after a meal) and are expected to help clean your living quarters, unit bathrooms, and unit campsite.

Safety at Camp

Camper drop-off and pick-up are closely monitored; campers are released only to adults listed by the parent or guardian and who show a picture ID. Once in our care, camps follow adult-to-girl supervision ratios specified by Girl Scouts’ Safety Activity Checkpoints. For example, campers always travel as buddies (in pairs) and camp staff are with campers at all times (except in changing areas).

Transportation

All campers must provide their own transportation to and from camp.

Camp Staff

All members of our staff are at least 18 years old and are selected for their maturity, enthusiasm, experience, leadership ability, compassion, and commitment to put campers first! All of our potential staff members go through a comprehensive screening and interview process, including background and reference checks. After being hired each summer, staff members participate in an intensive, week-long training program in child development, group management, camping skills, conflict resolution, bullying prevention, CPR/First Aid, and specialty areas. Many staff members return year after year. We encourage you to talk to your camp counselors about any concerns, worries, or needs. Communication between campers and counselors makes for the best experience possible!

Camp Buddies

Summer Camp is a place to make new friends, as many girls come to camp not knowing anyone. Camp staff are trained to help you make new friends, but if you would like to be placed in a unit with a buddy, both of you must register for the same session, indicate your buddy choice when you register for camp.

A Note to Parents on Communication Cell Phones. Cell phones are not allowed at any of our camps. Any cell phone brought to camp will be secured in the camp office until your camper returns home. We are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged phones.

20

General Information

Phone Calls. Campers are not permitted to make phone calls while at camp. If any concerns or questions arise during your camper’s experience, a member of our staff will call you.

Mail. The best form of communication is a letter. To ensure that your camper receives a letter each day, bring letters from home to check-in. Try preaddressed and stamped envelopes for your camper to write back!

Changes, Cancellations, and Refunds

Daily Life at Camp

Every home wit camper will go h a certifi cate, pro center p gram atch, and a Journe y/badge progress report!

At Girl Scout summer camp, girls develop leadership skills as they discover themselves, connect with nature, and take action with their new friends! On a typical day, you spend about half of your time participating in the activities of your camp session and the other half participating in general camp activities. Every day you’ll experience the flag ceremonies, unit kaper time, meals, session activities, and general camp activities.

Health Care at Camp

All camps meet established standards for health and safety, site maintenance, program, and personnel, which are set by state and local governments and Girl Scouts of the USA. An on-site health supervisor with advanced medical training is available 24 hours a day and counselors are informed of campers’ medical history and medication needs to ensure proper first aid and medical assistance. All camp staff follow established treatment procedures reviewed by a doctor. The health supervisor manages camper medications, and minor camper illnesses and injuries are handled on-site following parent/guardian directions on the Health History form. You are encouraged to communicate any needs that arise with the camp staff. We all use sunscreen on a regular basis and are encouraged to drink plenty of water. All campers are also covered by a supplemental accident and sickness insurance. The insurance cost is included in the camp fee.

A Note to Parents: Accommodating Special Needs

If your camper has special needs (dietary, physical, medical, or emotional), please contact the leadership and learning specialist-outdoor program at 877-312-4764 or camp@girlscoutsmoheartland.org with specific considerations in advance so we can best serve your camper.

Meals and Dietary Restrictions

Campers are provided three full meals a day plus snacks! Campers staying a full week at camp will experience cooking in their unit campsite. Please indicate special dietary needs on the Health History form, and please do not bring any food or drinks from home.

Homesickness

Each program session has a minimum number of campers required. If the minimum number of campers is not met, the program will be cancelled. Camp registration fees, including deposit, will be refunded if a camper cannot be placed in her first, second, or third choice. In order to request a program session change, parents or guardians should contact a customer data coordinator at 877-312-4764 to see if the change is possible. All program session changes must be made at least three weeks before the camp program session starts. Changes requested after three weeks before the camp program session starts will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In the event that a camper fails the health screening upon arrival at camp, every effort will be made to place her in a similar program session at a later date. If this is not possible, a full refund will be granted. Every effort will be made to place a camper who misses her choice of program session due to illness, injury, or family emergency in another program session. The balance of camp session fees is refunded only if written notice of cancellation is received three weeks before the camp program session starts, or if the camper is ill and a written notice of cancellation is accompanied by a statement from the camper’s attending physician. Once the session has started, refunds will not be made if a camper leaves a session already in progress due to homesickness, illness, behavioral issues or parental request.

When you’re far away from your home, family, and friends, it’s only natural to miss them! The truth is, most campers go through times when they miss their family or friends back home. Tell yourself it’s okay to miss them, but you’re ready for camp and all the fun! 21 General Information
