Carl Mackley houseS This early example of public housing in the United States was sponsored by the American Federation of FullFashioned Hosiery Workers. Though not publicly owned, it received public financing from the Housing Division of the PWA under Harold Ickes. Well-known “houser” Catherine Bauer advocated for the project, which was conceived as a total community and included residential buildings, a commu-
nity center, and two swimming pools in its International Style design. Because neither Stonorov nor Kastner were registered, they enlisted William Pope Barney as architect-of-record.
