TIPS FOR THE NEW HOME DESIGNERS! ¡TIPS PARA LOS NUEVOS DISEÑADORES DE CASAS!

WHEN we are about to design/build our dream home, we have to always remember where we are. Baja California Sur is a territory which has hot dry weather, which - rather than being a burden for a project - is an advantage. Hot dry weather is the birthplace of some of the most important architectonic traditions of humanity, which Mexican culture inherited (via the Spanish culture): the Islamic architecture.
CUANDO estemos por diseñar nuestra casa soñada, siempre debemos recordar donde nos ubicamos. Baja California Sur es un territorio con clima seco y húmedo, el cual en lugar de ser una carga para un proyecto, es una ventaja. Un clima seco y húmedo es donde nacen algunas de las más importantes tradiciones arquitectónicas de la humanidad, de la cual la cultura mexicana heredó a través de la cultura española, elementos de la arquitectura islámica.
To adapt to this weather, it is necessary to optimize natural ventilations and avoid dust. Inner patios, vegetation, proper orientations, proper roof shapes and right kind of windows are some of the main elements that will allow us to have a healthy and intelligent home design.
Para adaptarnos a éste clima es necesario optimizar las ventilaciones naturales y evitar el polvo. Patios internos, vegetación, buena orientación y formas correctas en los techos y ventanas son algunos de los elementos principales que permitirán un diseño inteligente y saludable.

In this occasion I will take the liberty of giving you some suggestions that you might want to consider when thinking/designing your dream home in Baja Sur. Taking in consideration different natural elements and local geographical conditions, our starting basic design guidelines for any project in the area should be:
En esta ocasión me tomaré la libertad de darles algunas sugerencias que pudieran considerar cuando diseñen su casa ideal en el sur de Baja. Tomando en consideración diferentes elementos naturales y las condiciones geográficas locales, nuestras pautas de diseño básico para cualquier proyecto en el área deben ser:
• The use of thick walls, which delay the penetration of the heat during the day, and the cold at night. • Tilted roofs with small slope but still steep enough to deflect effectively sun rays and heat. • The use of natural and local materials. • Windows that will allow the flow of air and at the same time can block sunlight and dust. • The use of inner patios to help refresh the house and its rooms. • We need to be able to configure the building in a way that volumes don’t generate unnecessary heat for its neighboring buildings, avoiding excessive heat caused by solar rays. • Generating an irregular facade will allow it to give shade to itself, and prevent it to absorb extra heat. • The use of trees and/or vegetation helps to shade the facades and protect surfaces from sun rays. Roofs in different shapes and slopes have irregular energy reflections, and overhangs provide shade to lower volumes and/or open areas. The use of pergolas and shades will be important to complement the exterior areas. • Vaults and domes are also very effective to isolate spaces from heat and to liberate hot air from their top. • Windows: to its exteriors they need to take in consideration the amount of dust and light, protecting the facades from this; openings to interior gardens and patios should be bigger than the ones to the exteriors to allow fresh wind to circulate through them freely.
• El uso de muros gruesos, los cuales retrasan la penetración del calor durante el día y el frío por la noche. • Techos ligeramente inclinados, pero lo suficientemente empinados, para desviar efectivamente los rayos del sol y el calor. • El uso de materiales locales y naturales. • Ventanas que permitan el flujo de aire e impidan el paso de rayos solares y el polvo. • El uso de patios internos que ayuden a refrescar la casa y sus habitaciones. • Es necesario configurar la construcción de forma que su volumen no genere calor innecesario para los vecinos, evitando el calor excesivo causado por el reflejo de los rayos solares. • Diseñar una fachada irregular le permitirá que su misma sombra la proteja y le impida absorber más calor. • El uso de árboles y/o vegetación ayuda a sombrear las fachadas y proteger las superficies de los rayos solares. Los techos en diferentes formas e inclinaciones reflejan irregularmente la energía, y los techos voladizos proporcionan sombra a menor volumen y/o en áreas abiertas. El uso de pérgolas y sombras será importante para complementar los espacios exteriores. • Las bóvedas y domos también son efectivos para aislar los espacios del calor y para liberar el aire caliente de su punta. • Ventanas al exterior: necesitan considerar la cantidad de polvo y luz que reciben para proteger las fachadas; al interior (patios y jardines): deben ser más grandes que las exteriores para que el aire fresco circule por ellas libremente.
Let’s not forget the wind! In hot dry areas like Baja Sur we need to keep and canalize fresh air and wind, preventing it to slide over the building without penetrating into the rooms. Wind needs to be funnel making it refresh facades, roofs, and interiors.
¡No olvidemos el viento! En áreas cálidas y húmedas como el sur de Baja, necesitamos contener y canalizar el viento y el aire fresco, evitando que rodee la casa sin que entre a las habitaciones. El viento necesita canalizarse para refrescar la fachada, los techos y los interiores.
There is plenty of old eco-techniques and sustainability principles which are inexpensive and almost intuitive but give us better quality of life and better (healthier) homes; I hope these recommendations and tips help you to make a better design in your dream home!
Hay bastantes técnicas ecológicas tradicionales, además de principios sustentables, que son baratas e intuitivas y facilitan una mejor calidad de vida además de hogares más saludables. ¡Espero que éstas recomendaciones y tips le ayuden a mejorar el diseño de su casa ideal!
