Buildings, Battles and Bodies: A History of Heronbridge

austerity was swept away. With stable employment, we began to enjoy the good life of holidays, televisions, and even a family car. This exhibition looks at Chester during this decade – the thriving streets, the dance halls, the parties, and the events which signified the dawning of a bright new age.

Grosvenor Museum, Exhibition Gallery One 85 years of excavations at Heronbridge have revealed some amazing secrets. This exhibition begins by exploring the Roman origins of Heronbridge, where a settlement was established on the edge of the River Dee close to the fortress at Chester. It then jumps forward to the 7th century and the Battle of Chester to investigate Heronbridge’s fortified enclosure and mass grave. Visitors can even come face to face with two Anglo-Saxon warriors who fought, died, and were buried on the site.

An Ornament to the City: The Rows of Chester Chester History & Heritage This photographic exhibition focuses on Chester’s historic Rows. Medieval in origin, the Rows are a unique system of covered walkways on the city’s four main streets, running through the frontages of the buildings above the shops at street level. The exhibition traces how the Rows became one of Chester’s main tourist attractions and an ornament to the city.

Liz Ellis, a sculptor, and Lynette Howells-Moore, a painter, live and work on either side of the River Dee in Chester. Their collaboration celebrates the ancient connection with the river as Deva, her wider landscape, and the earth as sacred mother of all; a natural participation in nature’s bounty and a quiet contemplation of deeper meaning in contrast to a world where speed, acceleration and achievement are worshipped as the ruling forces of our time.

Motherhood

Dulce et Decorum Est

The Nurses’ Story

Grosvenor Museum, Costume Gallery This small exhibition explores the role of ‘motherhood’ between 1860 and 1960, with interpretation extending into the surrounding period rooms. Recognising that the role is not always fulfilled by the biological mother, the exhibition examines the themes of baby and child-care, home-making and ‘time out’. Through objects, costumes and ephemera, the exhibition considers the roles of ‘motherhood’, laboursaving equipment, and the implications of social developments during a century of enormous change.

Chester History & Heritage

Chester History & Heritage This exhibition, contributed by the Backford, Mollington and District Local History Society, looks at the experiences of two dedicated nurses during the Great War, drawing on their photographs, diaries and letters.

For many of the young men who volunteered to fight for their country in the Great War it was a great adventure – regular meals, good companionship and an outdoor life – which was sure to be ‘over by Christmas’. Neither they, nor those who so actively encouraged them to enlist, had any idea of the horrors that were in store. Using photographs drawn from both our own collection and those images and stories that were shared at our recent Roadshow, this exhibition looks at the local men – and their families – whose lives were irrevocably changed by ‘the war to end all wars’.

For Those in Peril: HMS Chester

From Bombs to Bandages

Chester History & Heritage It was an exciting moment for the citizens of Chester when a ship was named after the city and launched in 1915. At the Battle of Jutland in June 1916 HMS Chester came under heavy fire and amongst the gun crew fatalities was 16 year old John Cornwall, who received the Victoria Cross for his dedication to duty despite being mortally wounded. This display commemorates his courage throughout that terrible battle and the ship and crew that he was so proud to be a part of.

The Great War: Personal Responses by Cheshire Artists Network

The flow of casualties from the battlefields of the Great War overwhelmed the existing medical establishments at home, and many civilian buildings and houses were turned over to military use. Chester was no exception and these images, taken from a donated photograph album, show the young convalescent patients and nurses of the Voluntary Aid Detachment at Hoole Bank, their smiling faces shining out at us from that long ago sunny afternoon when the booming guns of the front line must have seemed a world away from those peaceful gardens.

03

Grosvenor Museum, Exhibition Gallery Two Members of Cheshire Artists Network have produced work in a range of media which represent personal responses to the Great War, seen through collective recollection, documentary accounts, and family histories. Even though the subject matter cannot help but be emotional, and is often personal through the involvement of ancestors and their loved ones, the clouding of memories will increasingly be a threat. The artists involved hope to slow that process by means of their work, and in this way pay their respects to those who paid the price of our freedom.

Bede and the Battle of Chester Grosvenor Museum, Lecture Theatre 1-2pm Free. The Venerable Bede’s Ecclesiastical History contains the earliest account of the Battle of Chester, and is quite possibly the source on which all other early writers drew. However, the battle was not his central interest, nor was he even near contemporary.

08

Even{s Events for Adults Rather, he used it as an opportunity to demonstrate God's disapproval of heretical British Christianity and to show his own Northumbrian people in a good light. This lecture by Nicholas Higham will explore what Bede said about the battle, explain why he said what he did, and place that into the wider context of his work.

Grosvenor Museum, Lecture Theatre 2.30-3.30pm Free. Writing a century after the event, the Venerable Bede gives a lurid account of the Battle of Chester in which the British defeat was divine punishment for their sins. Subsequent writers through the Middle Ages and beyond have based their interpretations of the battle on Bede's version of events. Yet there are other accounts from the British point of view, preserved in histories and other texts from medieval Wales. This talk by Mark Zumbuhl will examine the battle from the 'Celtic' point of view, from the oldest surviving chronicles down to local traditions preserved among the monastic communities of northeast Wales.

A maximum of ten participants will each create a small panel painting using the ancient egg tempera technique. An ink drawing on the panel establishes the image, after which pigments ground in an egg yolk medium are applied as coloured layers to the gessoed panel surface. All materials will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch.

Lecture Theatre 1-2pm Free. The archaeology of the early Middle Ages has revealed some breath-taking treasures. When long-lost human remains from Heronbridge turned up in the archaeology collection at Manchester Museum few could have anticipated just how important they would turn out to be. Drawing on comparative material from the same site, Bryan Sitch makes a case for dating these remains to the early 7th century. If true, they may well be casualties of the Battle of Chester, recorded by the Venerable Bede. Detailed study of the remains is revealing a horrifying picture of the nature of warfare in this period.

The Great War brought carnage and horror to millions and, for many, this senseless destruction was exemplified by the war poets.
