Suburbia Rise

Concept

Front lawns and porches recreate the safety and friendliness of a suburban neighborhood in a dense urban area.

Context

Located in the Transit Village area of Boulder, Colorado in the year 2030, Suburbia Rise responds to the pedestrian focused present as well as the railroad focused past.

Context

Transit Village - Boulder, Colorado

30th St

Today, the parking lots of two car dealerships are all you will find on this site. However, the site and its immediate surroundings will soon undergo redevelopment into a pedestrian-focused, mixed-use neighborhood that will cater to a diverse population of different ages, incomes, and social backgrounds.

Pearl

St

Transit Village will have access to multiple forms of public transit, including a train that uses a historic track that previously carried only freight. This railroad line gave birth to the industrial area of East Boulder and continues to serve the remaining factories and warehouses.

The podium opens to create a mini park on the interior and to help define the shopping avenues and plaza to the South and East.

Residents share two elevated front yards located on the south. Here, residents can take in the Colorado sun and beautiful mountain views. Front doors and porches located over the yards encourage residents to engage with their neighbors and monitor the safety of their community.

• •

Each floor is stepped back to increase privacy for the apartments that are closer to the shared front yard. The stepbacks also allow for passive solar heating and shading.

• •

The railroad industry that gave birth to this neighborhood inspired the external structure. The tallest railroad structures, trestles and bridges, typically use a diagrid structure for maximum strength and material efficiency. A diagrid structure pays homage to the neighborhood’s roots and frames views of the mountains.

Cairo Art Hostel and Gallery

Located in the bustling and politically charged Tahrir Square, Cairo Art Hostel and Gallery provides a place for artists to live, work, and exhibit their art. The public gallery serves as a pedestrian shortcut across the site, increasing the amount of art working-class Egyptians can view in the course of a normal day.

Tahrir square has a rich history filled with landmark revolutions. Egyptians have often congregated en masse in Tahrir Square for political demonstrations. In 1919, 1952, and 2011, these demonstrations led to the overthrow of political regimes seen by the people as oppressive. The 2011 revolutions drew crowds of up to 300,000 people and were covered extensively by world media. A cultural center located in such a turbulent location draws attention to the humanity of Egyptians who would be otherwise associated with turmoil and distress. Of course, Egypt is not always embroiled in revolution. Tahrir Square is usually a prominent transportation node surrounded by a broad range of building types including goverment, university, religious, residential, and commercial.

Context

Concept

Boulder, Colorado is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts and health nuts. The local culture is influenced so strongly by this population that the typical culture of consumption, found throughout the western world, has nearly disappeared in many circles. For instance, instead of showing off material possessions, you can bolster your social standing by sharing the number of vertical feet you have climbed or the number of trophies on your wall.

ARC acknowledges this idiosyncrasy of Boulder and encourages recovering athletes to indulge their passion for public performance while moving through their recovery routine. This can make the recovery process more enjoyable and meaningful. The burgeoning field of sports psychology recognizes that an athlete’s recovery can be adversely affected by a low sense of self-esteem, so it is important to address their emotional recovery as well as their physical.

Rehabilitation programs that require privacy and sensitivity are located in the back half of the building in intimate, enclosed spaces. A wheelchair accessible ramp with terraced platforms and seating allows patients to congregate as well as seemlessly move their exercise from the confines of the building to the expanse of the city. The ramp gives patients the opportunity to display their mobility to each other as well as to all of Boulder. The semi-transparent pool mass allows passers-by to see that the inhabitants are active and capable while also restricting their ability to watch or identify individuals.
