Learning Community: From Slave Narrative to Protest Novel: Exploring Composition Through African American Literature

ENGL& 101

This combined African American Literature and English 101 course will introduce students to a variety of texts from African American authors and then invite them to write about the ideas, themes, and perspectives in those texts. The class will begin by looking at slave narratives, and will then move into writings by Harlem Renaissance writers and authors of the Civil Rights Movement. The course will end by having students focus on a contemporary African American author of choice and presenting their findings to the class. Students will use the writing process to develop analysis essays, essay exams, and a short research paper about these texts. This course combines ENGL& 101 (English Composition) and ENGL 248 (African American Literature) for 10 credits.
