CoverSTAR

Our covers stars with month are Suffolk folk/rock duo Silbury Hill who’re hoping for a blessing from Cardinal Wolsey himself when they appear at Saints Folk and Beer Festival in Ipswich this month. The event is taking place at St Peter’s by the Waterfront on 28th/29th April and will also feature folk stars Sam Carter and Charlie Dore along with some fine East Anglian artists including Honey and the Bear and Waxie’s Dargle. Grapevine is published monthly by Musical Marketing and is available free from selected outlets across East Anglia. Reproduction of images or artwork is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. Although we aim for accuracy, we cannot be held responsible for any loss incurred due to incorrect information provided in the listings and adverts. If you are in any doubt, contact the venue before travelling. The views expressed in Grapevine are not necessarily those of editor, publisher or printer. When we are out and about we often hear music fans bemoaning the lack of music venues. Then you get those who complain that we don’t use the venue we have. There is a grain of truth in both arguments. What has been lacking in the arguments is any form of professional research into the whys and wherefores of the live music scene, until now. The UK Live Music Census is a new project between the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle, run by members of the Live Music Exchange team in partnership with the Musicians’ Union, Music Venue Trust, and UK Music, and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The census takes place on line Between 9th March and 8th May 2017. The partners we will be surveying musicians, venues, promoters and audience members nationwide to provide the most comprehensive dataset yet of live music across the spectrum in the country. Whether your idea of live music is a tribute band in the corner of a pub on a Friday night or a choral society in your local church now is your chance to have your say. It is not restricted to fans, if you run a venue or play in a band you can have your say too. I suspect you are thinking what difference will it make – the answer is we don’t know. The music industry is estimated to contribute £3.5bn to the UK economy. Only by understanding what investment is needed to help the industry thrive will we be able to help develop it. Follow us on Twitter: GrapevineLIVE Stephen Foster is BBC Radio Suffolk’s longest serving presenter. Foz presents Drive-time and features an eclectic selection of music with much of it coming from local bands and singer-songwriters. @StephenFoz

As early as it might seem we appear to have entered the festival season and with that in mind Foz previews two big events in Ipswich which will keep him busy throughout the last weekend of the month. He also flags up the annual Ipswich Jazz Club blues night. I can’t ever recall my hometown of Ipswich hosting a folk festival. Correct me if I’m wrong but this month’s Saints Beer And Folk Festival will be the first time Suffolk’s county town has celebrated the wonderful world of folk in such a big way. The events takes place at St Peter’s-bythe-Waterfront on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 April and features two of the UK’s top folk singers as well as many of Suffolk’s leading acoustic-based acts. Silbury Hill’s David Stainer has curated the Friday night session which sees Honey And The Bear top a bill that also features guitarist Lou Myhill, the trio EllY Tree and singer/songwriter Holly Johnston. I have put together the Saturday night line-

Sam Car ter up which stars BBC Folk Awards winner Sam Carter of False Lights fame and the evergreen Charlie Dore together with her trusty guitarist Julian Littman of Steeleye Span. Also on the bill that evening are

Silbury Hill and Suffolk’s very own Pogues tribute band Waxie’s Dargle.

“...the wonderful world of folk...” GrapevineLIVE is backing the two-dayer which has all been organised by the party loving Beer & Co, specialists in events where everyone is guaranteed a good time. Also supporting this new festival for Ipswich are West End Music with an Open Mic session and Steve Langdon who brings his Pop Up Record Shop to the occasion. Outdoors that same weekend is the annual Ipswich May Day Festival. As I have discovered first hand over the past few months a lot of hard work goes into making this annual free family event run some smoothly and successfully. It’s been a great honour for me to involved in the programming of the Roger Mackay stage. I knew Roger well and was delighted when his widow Teresa asked me to join the organising committee. I have curated much of what’s on the so-called main stage enlisting the talents of The Colourblind Hedgehogs, Back Porch, Metropolis, Phil Jackson’s Rock’n’Roll Band and Reggae Rainbows. There’s lots more live music on Alexandra

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE Park from midday to 6pm on Sunday, April 30 so I really hope you can make it as we mark International Workers’ Day. Also in my diary for this month is the annual Ipswich Jazz Club blues night. It’s held every Spring in conjunction with BBC Radio Suffolk and this year stars The Cadillac Kings, those fine purveyors of blues with a swing and a smile on its face. It’ll be their very first visit to Ipswich and takes place on Sunday, April 23. In previous years we’ve had the likes of Paul Lamb and the King Snakes, Ian Siegal and The Keno Kings rocking the joint and I just know that the excellent Cadillac Kings will give those of us at The California Club another night that will live long in the memory.

A few weeks ago I managed to grab 15 minutes with a singer I hadn’t chatted to for about five years. I last interviewed Ed Sheeran at Latitude 2011, but before then we’d spoken semi-regularly for a few years. This time around, I was to call him from my work. He’d be in the back of a car, on his way to what his press person (for radio… in the UK… ) described as “other promo”.

“... whatever you’re doing, be yourself.” That promo, of course, is for his third album, ÷, which as I type seems intent on breaking every sales and chart record ever set, and probably some that haven’t been invented yet. Seriously, 16 songs in the top 20 – phenomenal. Before the interview I wondered if becoming one of the biggest popstars in the world would make Ed a different person to chat to, but I needn’t have worried. He was a joy, and in what the EADT later described as a “wide ranging interview”, Ed discussed

Ed Sheeran everything from his thoughts on the new album (the songs are “very eclectic and divided”), his plans for a homecoming gig (Portman Road “will happen”), the local music scene (check out Mullally), his plans for the future (making his own movie) and what he did with his pig sculpture (it’s “right next to the swimming pool”). Once part of the interview had been aired, James Hazell asked me to go on his show to talk about Ed - and one of the questions he asked was ‘who is the next Ed Sheeran?’ I was able to name a couple of things I’m excited about - SuperGlu’s imminent trip to Texas, and Bessie Turner’s (yet to be aired) session for us - but with some further thought I’d say the chances are that there won’t be another Ed. What he continues to achieve is the very definition of the word remarkable, and I think we should just enjoy witnessing it rather than worrying about who will be next. Ed is providing a Hollywood-blockbuster story of what the perfect mix of talent and perseverance can bring, but I’d be wary of using him as a benchmark for other

And if there are any of those musicians reading this, Ed has this message…whatever you’re doing, be yourself. “Use your insecurities as weapons which can be useful to you,” he said. “Remain individual. “Write as many songs as possible and try and do as many shows as possible, but the way to stand out is being yourself - because no-one can be a better you than you. “And also, first and foremost, you have to enjoy it.”

Review: Dave Sharp Live ...at the vic

APRIL 2017

17

Dave Sharp is probably best known for his role as lead guitarist with The Alarm – a post punk band keen to rebuild music back in the eighties. The band became popular in the states, they toured with Bob Dylan and U2. This latest solo album by Dave was recorded live at The Victoria pub in Colchester on a cold Sunday evening in November just days before a US presidential election that will make interesting reading in the history books of the future.

more real than some politicians would have us believe – we should indeed say a prayer for the common man who on this side of the Atlantic is just about managing.

The album was totally unrehearsed and comprises a collection of Sharp’s own work alongside classics from Guthrie, Dylan and McCullough.

This is an album sung with passion with Dave’s recognisable, slightly guttural rendition. The sleeve notes talk of apprehension and uncertainty – given the history of some of the eleven tracks, will we ever be otherwise? The unrehearsed nature of the recording gives it a raw, natural feel which songs like this should have.

It is that opening track of Guthrie’s ‘Ain’t Got No Home’ that grabs you by the throat and screams – have we learned nothing from history? It could be a modern ballad about Syrian refugees but it fact it’s origins are in an old gospel song. Sharp’s own ‘Downtown America’ conjures up visions of an America

‘The Cliffs of Duneen’ at first, to me seemed out of place. I have a sentimental attachment to a particular version of that song. That sentimentality has blinded me to the songs deeper meaning and I have Dave to thank for making me revisit it – the Irish emigrants fantasy.

‘Dave Sharp – live at The Vic’ is available from Little London Records, check out www.DaveSharp.org for more details.

by Ian Ambrose We all love a story. We all love a tune. We all love a song. It may be more contentious to say that reality is more fascinating than fantasy, but if you tick all four boxes then folk music and its Atlantic twin, Americana, should be your playlist of choice, and if you are a gig goer then your cup runneth over. In our neck of the woods the only two things that can possibly stand between you and many evenings of great music are the size of wallet and familial obligation. I guess I should leave the reasons, why this music has such a foothold in the East, to those with degrees in such things, but who can fail to empathise with the downtrodden

Enough bar stool philosophy; Among the juggernauts clogging the East Anglian byways this month will be those belonging to such genre heavyweights as The Unthanks, The Saw Doctors, and Lindisfarne, all of whom are selling tickets appropriate to their status. So if I may crave your indulgence I would like to point you in the direction

“real and uplifting” of those who deserve to but haven’t yet reached those heights, and for those who can’t read between the lines that means they are damned good and you need to see them. I can offer no guarantees or refunds, but I can’t see how you can go far wrong at an evening with the endearingly named Rubber Wellies, from Dublin, in Chillesford. For those who fancy the twisted logic of English Americana then Police Dog Hogan will float your boat in Cambridge. Stowmarket is the place for Canadian Americana as the duo Hungrytown work

Jason McNiff worker in “Between the wars” or the hardships endured by the family of “Tom Joad” in Woody Guthrie’s epic. In essence these are stories from the underbelly, stuff that will never get passed the censor’s knife and into the pages of the history books, yet remain real and uplifting to those of us for whom similar is but a step away.

their magic. Back in the UK, Calan, from the forefront of Welsh folk music, do their thing in Norwich. Finally, the little Essex town of Kelvedon gets to host the guitar wiz Jason McNiff (think Jones with a modern twist). I don’t think Grapevine will offer prizes to any who see all five, but even if you only catch one then I’m willing to wager that life will have been enriched enormously.

FJ is one of the most versatile musicians of her generation. After 3 years as an undergraduate and choral scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge, her Ave Maria was picked up by US TV Drama West Wing, her In Paradisum won Classic FM’s composer’s competition and she was asked to create her hugely successful one-woman show Bon Voyage – from opera to popera to broadway! Recently moved from London to Suffolk, her mission is to break down the elitist barriers surrounding classical music… getclassical@grapevineLive.co.uk @fjwsoprano ‘Try putting that under yer chin, darlin’!’ was a phrase I would dread, clambering awkwardly onto the bus with my enormous cello towering over me, fumbling in my pocket for my 20p bus fare and wanting the shy-world, which many musicians inhabit, to swallow me up. Nowadays I’d probably be offered therapy for having to cope with ‘verbal abuse and bullying by the toothless tramp on the 240’, but back then the message was more gungho and less precious: ‘ignore it, get over it, move on.’

hair. Help. And boys too! Gulp. ‘Is there room for insecure types in music?’, I wondered. Oh my, if only I’d known what we all subsequently admitted we’d felt on that day… My best friend (to this day) later said she’d found me so scary and self-assured. Really? NO! You were the scary one!

“...more gung-ho and less precious...” And the point to my pop-psychology ramble is this: music gives us pleasure. But making music together from a young age gives us invaluable life skills: working as a team; uniting us with a common purpose; learning to be comfortably fearful of the unknown and dealing with it; making friends for life. So, how about this Easter supporting the many youth music courses either by encouraging your children to participate, or by attending their final concerts? These are just some of the exciting youth opportunities and events this month:

And trundle along I did, all the way to the music centre where Day One of the Easter Youth Music Course was about to start. Not that arriving there was much less daunting... all these confident kids my age and older, dressed in cool outfits and flicking their silky

BARDS OF THE HEATH – MIX’T BLESSINGS In its first incarnation The Bards from Martlesham Heath near Ipswich were a duo with occasional gigs - John Goodluck on vocals, guitar & bouzouki alongside Jo Arcand playing whistle, recorders and doing some narration. The Bards were then expanded to a musical unit in order to take on some gigs at unusual venues and situations. In 2012 the group metamorphosed into a five piece unit. Every so often an evening or event comes along which requires poetry and verse to be introduced into the mix and Jo researches deeply into the background of many of the stories and myths. These weave a thread between the songs, making it a harmonious presentation which has been described as a storybook with music. This latest album was recorded by group member Des Hart in the autumn of last year. Tracks :Come Sing the Summer/The Fairy Piper/ Earthheartbeat/Old Shuck/Dandelion Clock/ Lovers’ Rune/Mallory Weaver/The Red Road/ Witches’ Brew/Tarot Song/Pale Moonlight/Turning Of The Wheel Musicians : Xohn Goodluck, Jo Arcand, Pete Gosling,Bill Johnston, Des Hart, Rob Lummis, Andy Mapplebeck and Richard Edmondson

JOHNNO CASSON AKA SNIPPET – FUTURE MELANCHOLY POP MUSIC Colchester artist Johnno Casson may be also known to many of you as Snippet, the funky folky wonky pop multi-instrumentalist, who has delivered an extremely well received range of vibrant releases in the last few years in the shape of 4 EPs and the debut album Slowly Slowly Catchee Monkey.

Follow us on Twitter: GrapevineLIVE

In the process Snippet became one of the most played artists in the history of BBC Introducing and was described by Q Magazine as reminiscent of early Beck. This latest CD is jointly produced by Johnno and the late Wim Oudijk and captures Johnno at the top of his song writing game. Tracks : Hold No Shame/Middle Class Ways/ Bad Man/Follow/Marvellous Life/Ain’t Got Time For/Being Yourself/Dumbfounded/F’all/ Mental Health/We Love You/Some Kid/ I Remember/In Your Arms/I Leave It To You Musicians : Johnno Casson with Dawn Casson, Jeanette Lyons, Will Harris, Arkestar Horns, Wim Oudijk, Johnny Rhys-Lewis and Claire Hollocks

BROOKS WILLIAMS – BROOKS’ BLUES Cambridgeshire-based Brooks Williams is from Statesboro, Georgia USA (the town made famous by country-blues legend Blind Willie McTell and his song Statesboro Blues), creates a super-charged acoustic music that draws heavily on both his blues and Americana roots. The resulting sound can be described as Blues-icana. For his latest album Brooks has covered a whole host of blues standards together with one of his favourite Chuck Berry track – You Never Can Tell. The recordings were made ‘old school’ over three days in August last year. They were recorded, mixed and mastered by Andy Bell and this CD is up to the usual high standards we’ve come to expect from recently appointed patron of the Milkmaid Blues Club in Bury St Edmunds. Tracks : From Four Until Late/My Babe/Trouble In Mind/You Never Can Tell/Save The Bones/ Backwater Blues/On The Rolling Sea/Statesboro Blues/Mother Earth/Sitting On Top Of The World/ Hesitation Blues/I Will Do My Last Singing

1975. The year Margaret Thatcher became leader of the Conservative Party, Fawlty Towers was first broadcast on TV and Bohemian Rhapsody was number 1 for what seemed an eternity (it was nine weeks but when you’re a kid – that’s an eternity!). It was also the year that Tommy, Ken Russell’s film of The Who’s groundbreaking concept album (itself released in 1969) about the deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure played a mean pinball, was released. Those events really do feel as though they belong to a different age, which

fared as well. Or at least it hadn’t. Ken Russell’s film is definitely a thing of its time. That’s due predominantly to the psychedelic intermingling of the precepts of Indian guru Meher Baba and Russell’s idiosyncratic film making. Russell is a love him or hate him kind of director and I have to say that I definitely don’t love him. As a film I find Tommy a confused and disjointed affair, a bad trip which even the presence of Oliver Reed and Jack Nicholson can’t rectify. And yet, despite that, it has a certain appeal.

I guess forty plus years is. Of those four events

being able to buy the idea of someone playing pinball being a huge, global, spectator phenomenon. The idea that people would watch someone else playing a game like pinball simply felt bizarre. I’m sure that’s what Pete Townsend intended but he must be smiling now as, in that strange way life has of imitating art, watching other people playing video games is now a multi-million pound industry and seems likely to begin to rival conventional sport for headlines over the next decade. And so, forty eight years after the release of the album, Tommy, as with all the best sci-fi, beings to look rather prescient. Whether that was a factor in Ipswich’s New

March 30th – April 15th , this production is a revival of the Broadway show, rather than the film. One interesting element of

“...withstand the passage of time...” the production for me will be how it deals with some of the less palatable aspects of a story which modern audiences would find unpalatable if presented as Russell and Townsend originally did. Keith Moon’s leering, vaudeville comic, portrayal of Wicked Uncle Ernie singing Fiddle About is a part of the film which Russell got wrong, and which highlights the fact that the film definitely was made in another era. I expect the Wolsey version will show this crime and its impact on Tommy’s life in a radical different manner to the film. Given that the central role of Tommy portrays a severely disabled person, it is good to see that access to the performance for disabled people is being given prominence. Audio description, BSL and captioning performances are often included during a production’s run but for the nineteen performance run of Tommy at the New Wolsey every performance will have, what is being termed, a creative use of these
