Message from the Director of Athletics

Dear Zags! It is my pleasure to present the inaugural Gonzaga University Department of Athletics Annual Report for the 2009–10 academic and athletic year. My thanks to all of our staff who played such an integral role in making this project become a reality. This publication will become an annual undertaking to keep you abreast of what we have achieved within the framework of intercollegiate athletics. The 2009–10 season was once again a success both on and off the field of competition. You have probably heard me say several times we have two basic goals at Gonzaga – to win on the field and to win in the classroom. Through a concerted effort of dedicated and loyal staff, coaches and student-athletes, we continue to achieve both of those goals. Can we get better? Of course, and we strive on a daily basis to make ourselves better today than we were yesterday, and to become better tomorrow than we are today. However a lot of our success also depends on you, our loyal fans and benefactors. We thank you for your continued support of our athletic and academic mission. While it takes all of the elements of staff, coaches and quality student-athletes to achieve our goals, it also takes your generous support to provide Gonzaga the resources it needs to remain competitive both athletically and academically. The resources you have provided support the activities that take place on the fields of competition, as well as behind-the-scene facilities such as the state-of-the-art Diedrick-DeLong Training Room, the Josh Burrows Performance Athletic Center and the Academic Lab to name just a few that have come to fruition in recent years. Gonzaga Athletics also continues to score high nationally in the NCAA Academic Progress Report. Our student-athletes are well-represented on West Coast Conference, regional and national all-academic teams. The annual and major gifts from you, our generous benefactors, help make all of this possible. In the coming year, we will focus our fundraising efforts on building our endowments and continuing to pursue facility upgrades. A primary initiative of our major gifts team will be to secure gifts to endow scholarships and operations. We will also be working to secure gifts to ensure the completion of the Gonzaga Soccer Field with the addition of lights, lockerrooms and permanent seating, and to bring the indoor tennis and golf facility project to reality. We also plan to create an Athletic Hall of Fame to showcase the accomplishments and traditions of those who have helped make Gonzaga what it is today. For all you do we say thank you. We believe your support not only makes us competitive, but also helps provide our studentathletes with an unforgettable experience during their time in a Bulldog uniform. I hope this Annual Report helps better inform you about what intercollegiate athletics encompasses at Gonzaga. We look forward to your continued involvement with the Bulldog experience. GO ZAGS! Sincerely,

Michael L. Roth Director of Athletics

school in West Coast Conference history to go undefeated in the regular season and go on to win the WCC Tournament.

After years of steadily climbing the ranks of the women’s basketball world, Gonzaga University made a splash on the national scene in 2009–10; one that has secured itself a place among the elite. The Bulldogs made their third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years in 2009–10 upsetting No. 2 seed Texas A&M in the Second Round after Vivian Frieson hit a jumper with 18 seconds left to push GU to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. The Zags’ season was destined to be a special one as they garnered national attention right off the bat as ESPN.com writer Graham Hays made the trip to South Dakota to cover Gonzaga in its opening contest against South Dakota State University. GU went on to break into the Top 25 rankings mid-season and never fell from the polls; finishing a school-high No. 12 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Top 25. The season ended with the Zags having their first player in school history drafted by the WNBA as Frieson was picked 31st overall by the Tulsa Shock.

Men’s Basketball Gonzaga was once again prominent on the national scene during the

2009–10 season. Another grueling schedule saw the Bulldogs play the likes of Michigan State University, Wake Forest University in the McCarthey Athletic Center, Duke University in Madison Square Garden, the University of Oklahoma in the Spokane Arena, the University of Illinois in the United Center in Chicago and the University of Memphis. In all, 5 NCAA Tournament teams dotted the Bulldog schedule. The Bulldogs got the attention of the nation early, downing the

Academic Excellence The 2009–10 academic year was marked by Gonzaga student-athletes continuing a tradition of academic achievement. In this past academic year alone, more than half of our student-athletes maintained over a 3.25 GPA and 134 student-athletes received University Honors as a reward for their hard work and commitment to excellence in the classroom. Fifteen teams maintained cumulative

43

GPAs over a 3.0, with men’s golf posting an impressive 3.49 cumulative GPA for the year. What’s more,

5 of our teams received All-Academic Team Honors (Men’s Golf, Men’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Soccer

student-athletes graduated in May 2010.

and Volleyball), an award voted on by each team’s respective National Coaches Association, and 51 of our student-athletes received recognition for academic success from the West Coast Conference (WCC) by earning their way onto their respective WCC All-Academic teams.

In May we celebrated alongside

Lori Conrad of women’s soccer, received the WCC Post-Graduate Scholarship.

43 graduating Zags, 18 of whom graduated with Honors. One of those notable graduating seniors, women’s soccer standout Lori Conrad, is the recipient of an extremely competitive WCC PostGraduate Scholarship. This award honors Lori’s continuous academic and athletic accomplishments as an undergraduate and enables her to pursue her MBA in Health Care Management right here at Gonzaga. While we are always sad to see our graduating Zags go, we are happy to announce that we saw the studentathlete Graduate Success Rate (GSR) improve to an impressive 92% for the 2009–10 reporting year.

SAAC sponsored a variety of events throughout the year to build camaraderie across all of Gonzaga’s varsity teams, including a Welcome Back Bowling Night, Christmas Party, Safe Tailgater prior to baseball’s WCC home opener and a Dodgeball Tournament. SAAC also played an integral role in community outreach projects during the 2009–10 year, including partnerships with three charities at home basketball games. The on campus golf facility added a 30-foot by 30-foot level putting green and enlarged the target green by 300 square feet. Twenty square yards of sand and organic mixture was brought in to complete the project. These improvements will allow the men’s and women’s golf coaches greater flexibility in conducting practices. The labor and materials for this enhancement were donated by A.M. Landshaper.

Martin Centre Lighting In May, the Martin Centre, Fieldhouse, Day and '63 Court lighting was installed with T5 fluorescents. The addition of the T5’s will increase the lumen levels and uniformity of the spaces while decreasing the energy cost per fixture. 2009–10 Annual report

NCAA certifications are conducted on 10-year cycles and the purpose is to ensure integrity in the institution’s athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their Athletic Departments. The certification self-study process was an intensive 8 month review of these primary components: governance and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; gender/diversity issues and student-athlete well-being.

Bulldog Club The Bulldog Club (BDC) is the official annual fundraising organization for Gonzaga Athletics. Gifts to the BDC allow our student-athletes to meet our goal of excellence on and off the playing surface by providing funding to address the rising costs that are associated with competition at the Division I level. Contributions to the BDC assist in off-setting Athletic Department expenses allowing Gonzaga to recruit, educate and train the best and brightest student-athletes by providing academic support, state-of-the-art training facilities and meeting the equipment needs to present our students with the
