All-American For the eighth straight season a Gonzaga University player was honored as the 2008 West Coast Conference Player of the Year as Gonzaga University junior guard Jeremy Pargo was the choice of the coaches. Pargo averaged 11.8 ppg overall, but it was the other facets of his game that often times made life rough for the opposition. He paced the conference in assists at 6.23 overall and 6.50 in WCC action, he was eighth overall in steals with 1.47 and fourth in WCC games at 2.07 and posted a 1.91 assist/turnover ratio in all games and 2.28 in WCC contests. He started all 33 games for the Bulldogs and provided an offensive weapon as well as giving the opposition fits in other ways. And his play provided the Bulldogs some bright moments throughout the season. He equaled his career high with 23 points against the University of Connecticut in The Hartford Hall of Fame Showcase in the Boston Garden in an 85-82 victory, scoring eight of his points in the final 4:17, including a pair of free throws with less than a minute to play. When he wasn’t scoring he was setting up his teammates, setting a career high with 13 assists against Virginia Tech in the Great Alaska Shootout, also adding 10 points for his second career points/assists double-double. He scored a career-high 28 points and almost rallied Gonzaga to victory against the University of Oklahoma in the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City. He hit five straight shots and scored all of Gonzaga’s points in a 12-5 run for 66-65 lead in a game Oklahoma won 72-68. loss. His 27 points – 9 in overtime – kept the Bulldogs in the game in a road loss at Saint Mary’s College. The native of Chicago, Ill., posted his third career points/assists double-double with 13 points and 12 assists in a home rout of WCC foe Pepperdine University. The Bulldogs won the WCC regular-season title for the eighth straight season, and earned an at-large berth to their 10th straight NCAA Tournament after falling in the WCC Tournament title game to host University of San Diego. He finished his junior campaign fourth on Gonzaga’s career assists charts with 422 and his 124 career steals ranked seventh. By the time his career ended in 2009 he had moved into 18th with 1,245 career points, ranked third in assists with 589 behind only Matt Santangelo and Blake Stepp and ahead of John Stockton and was third in career steals with 170 behind Stockton and Doug Spradley. He was named to the 2008 WCC All-Tournament team, was a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 14 second team selection and received Associated Press honorable mention AllAmerica accolades.
