Mexico’s sun triangle from Ixtapa to Acapulco to Hualtuco is often overlooked by avid golfers who seek out Mexico’s golden greens in Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya. Some great gems, more than worthy of your consideration, dot this 300 mile coastline which hugs the Pacific Ocean along southern Mexico. Today’s treasures in Acapulco are championship golf courses lined with palm trees and vegetation from around the world. By 1964 the first public course was built at the downtown, nine-hole Acapulco Club de Golf. Conveniently located on the Costera Manuel Aleman - only one block from the Convention Center it offers several sets of tees allowing for a varied 18 holes with a welltrained staff of caddies to make your conference visit a great experience. Robert von Hagge, who has over fourteen championship courses in Mexico, designed one of his best at Tres Vidas Golf Club. Inaugurated in 1995, it features nine lakes, recognizable von Hagge “moguls,” palm trees, and sand traps. Lying parallel to the Pacific Ocean, with five of its greens extending along the beach, it was chosen for the PGA Chrysler Cup Tournament. Leo Castellanos, a second-generation golf professional, continues to oversee the operations with great care, as he has for the past 10 years. Tres Vidas, rated No. 5 in BEST’s TOP 30 Private Golf Courses in Mexico, is well positioned to be one of Mexico’s finest private residential real estate developments. Fairmont Princess sits on 480 acres of lush gardens and palms which frame the view of the Sierra Madres in the beautiful Acapulco Diamante area. Built in the form of an ancient Aztec pyramid, the hotel has 701 exquisite rooms that offer spacious bathrooms, large walk-in closets and separate dressing rooms. The resort also features four freshwater pools with waterfalls and a saltwater pool, all of which overlook Revolcadero Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Additional amenities include two championship golf courses and eight outdoor tennis courts. In 1997 Fairmont purchased and refurbished this grand hotel. Today a new owner, Global Hospitality Investments (GHI), has ambitious plans for the property. The centerpiece of Princess will be the new Turtle Dunes Country Club, which will be Acapulco’s premiere country club and golf experience. The exclusive country club will have a world class championship golf course, a luxury full-service club house and a Lorena Ochoa Golf Academy. The introduction of the Turtle Dunes Country Club is part of GHI’s larger strategy to renew the glamour and position of the Princess development This 18 hole, 7200 yard, Par 72, PGA Championship caliber course will be a dunes course. On a dunes landscape that represents the original heritage of the site. Not only will this present a uniquely beautiful experience for golfers, it marks a historic return of a unique environment where, among other things, a variety of Sea Turtles once nested and flourished. Fairmont Princess Golf Course is a favorite course that provides plenty of shot-making challenges although it is easy to play. Excellently maintained, the 18-hole course prompted Golf Digest to include the Princess Golf Course on its list of “The 25 Greatest Golf Resorts.” BEST’s TOP 30 Resort Golf Courses has this layout at number 22 in Mexico. Designed by Ted Robinson, it offers narrow fairways, Parrota trees and water hazards on 12 of the 18 holes. Glenn Doyle, Director of Golf, from Canada has the great responsibility of overseeing this property, as well as the new design for its sister course, the Pierre Marques. 34
