FILM

KADDISH FOR A FRIEND 10/09/2015, 6.30PM GOETHE-INSTITUT

Kaddish for a friend is the authentic and touching tragi-comic story of an intense friendship between two mismatched heroes in today’s Berlin. Russian Jew and WWII veteran Alexander Zamskoy, now 84. Alexander does not want to go into a retirement home. He fights against the strains of his age, holed up in with all his memories in his flat in Kreuzberg, observing the district’s decline with relaxed cynicsm. His Palestinian neighbour, 14-year old Ali Messalem, has quite different problems: he longs for nothing more than to be accepted by his fellow Arab youths. In a test of courage he breaks into the home of the Jewish arch enemy, which he then wrecks and abandons. Criminal charges arise and Ali faces a guilty judgement and expulsion.

FILM

LAND IN SIGHT 17/09/2015, 6.30PM GOETHE-INSTITUT

Bad Belzig in the state of Brandenburg, some 80 kilometres south-west of Berlin: three asylum seekers are faced with an uncertain future in their refugee home. Abdul, the son of a sheikh, comes from Yemen, Farid has fled Iran, and Brian is from Cameroon. The destinies of three men from such different backgrounds come together in one place, although they never actually meet in the film. However, they do go through similar experiences in a country which does not understand them and which they have trouble understanding. LAND IN SIGHT is a tale of mistrust and good intentions, of encounters with public authorities – whose problems stem more from their rigid bureaucratic structures than the attitudes of their staff – and also of dreams that are often too naive to have a chance of coming true.

FILM

ADRIFT: PEOPLE OF A LESSER GOD 24/09/2015, 6.30PM

GOETHE-INSTITUT

Adrift: People of a Lesser God is a film from multi-Pulitzer Prize nominee, Dominique Mollard. The majority of the film sees the undercover journalist travelling around North and West Africa in search of those who are willing to risk their lives to reach Europe. He’s also interested in tracking down those who, for the right amount of money, will facilitate their passage.

DID YOU KNOW The potatoe is to the German just as fufu is to the Akan? That about 219 spiecies of potatoes are grown in Germany, that

most of these spiecies have female names? That the average German eats about 72kilos of potatoes in a year? That there are three potatoe museums in Germany; Fußgönheim, München and Tribsees?

15/10/2015, 6.30PM GOETHE-INSTITUT

The summer of 1978: Nelly Senff, a postgraduate chemist, and her son Alexej relocate from East to West Berlin. A feigned marriage to a West German has made the move possible. After the death of Nelly’s boyfriend and Alexej’s father, she hopes to start a new life in the West. But first, the two end up in a refugee centre, and the German bureaucracy, with its string of questionnaires, is not the only thing that racks their nerves. The Secret Service, and most of all the CIA, are very interested in the reasons for Nelly’s exit from East Berlin – and even more so in her presumed dead boyfriend Wassilij, who may be operating as an agent on both fronts. To secure a future, the woman must first put the past behind her.

Berlin (East) in autumn 1989: Alex Kerner’s mother is in a coma after a heart attack and misses the fall of the Berlin Wall. She awakes in summer 1990. Her doctor declares that excitement of any kind could be fatal. Alex must conceal the fall of the SED regime from her. He and his friends pretend to the sick woman that the GDR still exists; the illusion remains perfect until one day the truth can no longer be concealed. The clever comedy was the most successful film of the year in 2003.

FILM

THE TOWER I

05/11/2015, 6.30PM GOETHE-INSTITUT

A family saga set during the final years of the GDR. Surgeon Richard Hoffmann may have come to an opportunistic arrangement with the system a long time ago, but his way of life enables state security officials to blackmail him. The adaptation of Uwe Tellkamp’s novel of the same name does away with the epic scope of the written original, but was considered one of the best things to come out of German TV in 2012.

FILM

THE TOWER II

12/11/2015, 6.30PM GOETHE-INSTITUT Second part of the family saga set during the final years of the GDR. The drill is brutal at the National People’s Army; outsiders are bullied. Christian repeatedly helps his overweight comrade Jan and yet is later not able to prevent him from collapsing and dying during a field exercise. Overcome by desperate rage, Christian attacks the responsible drill instructor; he and his friend Stefan are then sentenced to 20 months of imprisonment. They are sent to work at the notorious petrochemical plant in Schwedt as punishment. “I’ve met wonderful

people here, Christian writes home. In the meantime, Meno attempts to come closer to the prohibited author Judith. She has now found a job as a cemetery gardener. He encourages her to start writing again, even though she has been excluded from the Writers’ Association

FILM

ESCAPE TO BERLIN

19/11/2015, 6.30PM GOETHE-INSTITUT

The farmer Hermann Güden is on the run from Saxony-Anhalt to West Berlin. He wants to escape forced collectivisation. Also fleeing illegally is the young SED official Claus Baade, who is expelled from the party due to Güden’s disappearance and wants to fight for his rights in the capital of the GDR. Will Tremper’s ESCAPE TO BERLIN is one of the few films that were made about the German division before the construction of the Berlin Wall.

FILM

SOLO SUNNY

26/11/2015, 6.30PM GOETHE-INSTITUT

The GDR, at the end of the 70s: Ingrid Sommer, a woman working in a factory, tries to launch a singing career under the name “Sunny”. The young woman travels around with the band “Tornados” and plays some small gigs in cultural centres around the province. Her life is anything but “sunny” though, even when her love for the philosopher Ralph does promise some light and warmth at times. A story balancing between sadness and hope, and, retrospectively, a wonderfully precise and authentic film about life in the GDR.

We convey a comprehensive picture of Germany by providing information on Germany’s cultural, social and political life. Through our network of Goethe-Institutes, Goethe Centres, cultural societies and reading rooms, alongside our examination and language learning centres, we perform the principal tasks of cultural and educational policy abroad. We work in partnership with public and private cultural bodies, the German federal states and municipalities, and the corporate sector. We draw on the rich variety of our many-faceted open society and Germany’s lively culture. We combine the experiences and conceptions of our partners in Germany and abroad with our professional skills and engage in a dialogue rooted in partnership. In doing so, we function as service providers and partners for everyone taking an active interest in Germany and the German language and culture, and act independently with no political affiliations We face the cultural policy challenges of globalisation and develop innovative concepts for a world made more human through mutual understanding, where cultural diversity is seen as an asset
