Sea Cadets in The Mud! Adult staff from London Eastern District SCC recently took part in the Maldon Mud Race raising £1,000 for the Sea Cadets. District Officer Lieutenant Commander Michael Chittock RNR led ‘Team Squelcher’ – Lieutenant Gary Dodd, Sub Lieutenant Seb Rowland and Petty Officer Vicky Geerkins – and really entered into the spirit of the day (including the muddy bit!). After the race the team was welcomed by 60+ cadets and adults back to Maldon Unit SCC, where they continued to enjoy the day with an excellent unit BBQ laid on for their muddy return!

A Fantastic Fundraising weekend Sea Cadets from across London and Essex attempted to row a total of 24,900 miles (the equivalent of rowing around the world!) in 80 hours during the weekend of 19-21 April to raise funds to replace the ageing SCC flagship TS Royalist. A team of staff from the Marine Society & Sea Cadets HQ rowed 100 miles along the River Thames over the 80 hours, raising a huge £10k, whilst others using rowing machines ‘did their bit’. The grand total of 27,300 miles helped raise £147,000. The same weekend saw a team of adults from London Area Sea Cadets run the London Marathon which added another £2,500 to the total, which is now an amazing £4.8 million of the £5.6 million required – it is hoped that an order for the ship will be placed this year. London Deputy Area Officer, Lieutenant Commander Cliff Lewis (pictured) not only rowed a 13 mile ‘half marathon’, he also ran the full marathon the following day. Well done Cliff! Annual Parade in commemoration of John Travers Cornwell VC

The annual parade in commemoration of John Travers Cornwell VC, who died on 2 June 1916, took place in East Ham in the presence of the Right Honourable Stephen Timms MP, Representative Deputy Lieutenant, John Barber and the Deputy Mayor of Newham, Councillor Lester Hudson. Following this year’s main parade, a contingent of Newham Sea Cadets, with Standards of the Royal Naval Association and Royal British Legion along with the Union Flag, paraded through Manor Park Cemetery to Jack’s grave where a short Service of Remembrance was held. In 1915 Cornwell joined HMS Chester, a cruiser serving with Admiral Beatty’s Grand Fleet as part of the crew of the ship’s forward gun. On 31 May 1916 HMS Chester, along with other ships, engaged the German High Seas Fleet in the Battle of Jutland – the last ever action to be fought between great naval fleets. HMS Chester received several hits and suffered major damage including to the forward gun. One of these hits killed the entire crew of Jack’s gun, except him, but he was mortally wounded. Despite dreadful wounds, with his shipmates dead and dying all around him, Jack stood up without panic and waited by his gun for further orders until HMS Chester withdrew from the fight. Afterwards, he was taken to the ship’s sick-bay and later ashore to Grimsby. Despite the hospital’s best efforts he died on 2 June 1916 aged just 16 years and six months.

In recognition of his outstanding courage under fire, above and beyond what was expected of him, Jack was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross. CADET LONDON bridge SUMMER 2013

CADET NEWS Hackney celebrates the opening of a new Army Cadet Centre Hackney cadets from 22 Detachment ACF celebrated the opening of their new facility in Weston Walk on 29 April. In front of distinguished guests, cadets, friends and family, Brigadier David Paterson, Honorary Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, unveiled the plaque and declared the Cadet Centre officially open.

Major General praises Cadets as he bows out In March, 46 Cadet Detachment (Rifles) in West Ham had the privilege of having for their Annual General Inspection, Major General Greg Smith on his very last official engagement as the most senior Territorial Army Officer in the British Army. General Greg is also Deputy Colonel of The Rifles.

The purpose-built Cadet Centre now provides the Army cadets with indoor and outdoor drill facilities, two lecture rooms and ample space for them to meet and train. The re-development of the building, spearheaded by GL RFCA, required a financial investment of more than £350,000 and will benefit the existing cadets, encourage new joiners and improve the area for the local community.

The Detachment laid on a full evening of cadet training activities including rifle drill, first aid and map reading. Major General Smith can be seen giving some finer points on map reading to some suitably enthralled cadets, not often are they instructed by a Major General – who signed off the Detachment with flying colours saying “Well done to all of you here tonight, you are a credit to the Army Cadet Force.” However his presence did not in any way curb the natural exuberance of East End cadets!

New Ealing Inter-Cadet Competition

The Ealing Inter-Cadet Competition was launched in March by Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the Borough, Robert Leader, at The Westside Young People’s Centre. He said “The future of our Country lies in the hands of our young people and the Cadets set a fine example of what future generations can achieve through competition and a desire to win. I am confident that this will become an annual event that will be a credit to the Borough of Ealing and its young people.” 58 cadets aged between 12 and 18 took part in a General Knowledge Quiz – the first of a series of challenges being held over the next six months which will include an obstacle course, first aid competition and initiative exercises. The culmination will be at RAF Northolt in October comprising a drill competition, sports day and presentation of the winner’s cup. The five teams competing were 342 (Ealing) Air Training Corps, 203 Brentford Army Cadet Force, 1846 (Southall) Air Training Corps, 193 (Southall) Army Cadet Force and the Combined Cadet Force of St Benedict and Cardinal Wiseman schools (pictured left) – who were the winners on the night.

CADET NEWS West London cadets scoop Army Cadet National Football Trophies – again! 204 White City (Para) and 202 Acton (Royal Engineers) Detachments of Middlesex and North West London Army Cadet Force repeated the success of 2012 when they won both the Senior and Junior National Football Trophies at the national competition in Cumbria. In the Seniors, the White City team took on Western England and was cheered on loudly to a 3-1 easy victory for the third year running whilst the Acton Juniors won the final for the second year running, beating Eastern Region by a resounding 7-0. Colonel Mark Hodson, Sector Commandant said “This is really good news, we are very proud to have represented London region and come back with both trophies. Well done to all those involved; adult volunteers for making it happen and cadets for playing so determinedly well alike.”

A Mayoral visit In April, the Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Michael Markham and the Mayoress, Mrs Rosemary Markham inspected a smart parade of Army Cadets at their Uxbridge base in Honeycroft Hill. Making your own ‘bivvy’, cooking outdoors from a ration pack, radio signalling, first aid, map reading and weapon handling were all part of the Mayoral syllabus for the evening and it was smiles all round as the Mayor and Mayoress sampled some of the ration pack contents.

The Mayor said “The Army Cadet Force offers so many unique and wonderful opportunities for young people to develop both personally and within groups of like minded young people. Here, they are learning lifelong skills that will stand them in good stead now and in the future.” Both the Mayor and Mayoress were full of praise for the dedication of the volunteer staff who lead the teenagers.

Lord Mayor presents Top Award to Westminster Army Cadets Cadet Sergeant Sylvain Malbete and Cadet Corporal Joanne Adeluola of Westminster’s 235 (London Scottish) Detachment Army Cadet Force, were presented with the Deputy Lieutenant Award by The Right Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Angela Harvey accompanied by Westminster’s Representative Deputy Lieutenant, Brigadier Paul Orchard-Lisle. Seventeen year old Cadet Sergeant Sylvain Malbete from Paddington has been a cadet since 2009 and is studying for A levels at Hammersmith and West London College. “I’m just pleased and so proud to be given this honour” said Sylvain, “it’s come as a surprise really because I just enjoy what we do at cadets.” He is planning a career in the Army. Sixteen year old Cadet Corporal Joanna Adeluola from Streatham joined the cadets in 2010 and is a year 12 pupil at nearby school, Grey Coat Hospital. Joanna said, “I’m surprised but very happy and proud that I’ve been given this recognition.” Joanna wants to study Medicine at university after leaving school.

CADET NEWS First Aid in action Army Cadet Corporal Roland Baxter, 132 (Royal Signals) Detachment and his mother were at home when they heard a neighbour shouting for help in the street outside because her husband had collapsed. The man was not breathing, had a very weak pulse and looked as if he might have had a stroke. Roland asked his mother to call an ambulance and began administering CPR until the paramedics arrived. They asked Roland to collect information from the man’s wife regarding his medical history and while doing so he took time to reassure her and assist in helping her phone friends and relatives. Sadly, the man died the following week, but Roland’s actions, for which he was awarded Young First Aider of the Year, enabled the family to have some time with him before he passed away.

A new Corps of Drums

In November four cadets, Chloe Vincent, Ellicia Smith, Scott Standish and Jack Turner (both pictured) had left Kingston Reserve and Cadet Centre after a parade night when they witnessed a person being hit by a car. They sprang into action and using their ACF first aid training, assessed and controlled the situation until the paramedics arrived. They administered first aid by ensuring the casualty was, and stayed, conscious and in no further danger. Cadet Vincent dialled 999, reported the incident and ensured that all present followed the instructions given by the operator. Once the paramedics arrived, they were briefed on all the relevant facts and what the Cadets’ actions had been. The Cadets also ensured that the medics remained safe from traffic whilst they were treating the casualty. The four received Certificates of Commendation from St John Ambulance for their actions on that evening. Company Training Officer, Captain Claire Hutton, said that she was extremely proud of the cadets and that “At times like these we truly see the good we are doing for the youth of today.”

South West London ACF has been working hard to bring together a sector Corps of Drums under the instruction of Band President, Major Garry Jupp. Cadets from 131 Cadet Detachment (RTR) and 156 Cadet Detachment (RRF) have attended two week-long music camps at Longmoor and practice every week at their detachments. They worked with South East London ACF Corps of Drums in preparation for Beating Retreat at the Tower of London on Saturday 22 June and again on Thursday 27 June for the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Association. Detachment Commander for 156 RRF, Senior Instructor Yorke, says “The beauty of the Corps of Drums is that we can put on a public performance and always draw a crowd. We let the public have a go on the drums, flutes and bugles if possible, which the children in the audience love. I’m very proud of my cadets at 156 and of South West London ACF Corps of Drums as a whole. They all started from scratch and have worked hard to achieve their success.”

Awards for high achieving army cadets and cadet instructors Cadets and Adult Instructors from London’s South East Sector were presented with awards and medals at a ceremony held in February at their Headquarters in Wat Tyler Road, Blackheath. For the first time, National Citizen Service Certificates were presented to Cadets who took part in the programme run by the Government for 16-17 year olds. The objectives of the programme include: > Taking on new challenges and learning new skills > Making a difference while making new friends > Growing your confidence and your CV > Experiencing something new as you help out your community 6

CADET NEWS Air Cadets troop Regional Banner 400 Air Cadets from across the London & South East Region massed at Royal Air Force (RAF) Northolt in June to troop the Regional Banner. The Banner was reviewed by Group Captain Les Hakin, Regional Commandant London & South East who said: “I was impressed by everyone on parade today. It was a challenge to undertake such a parade at RAF Northolt, with cadets having to complete their training over the weekend but they rose to our motto of ‘Venture Adventure’ admirably.” The Regional Banner was trooped by Air Cadets from 97 (Croydon) Squadron, Surrey Wing, selected after winning the Regional Banner Drill Competition.

Mega Training weekend success In May, training staff and cadets from Middlesex Wing ATC mustered at RAF Northolt for a weekend of cadet training and adult development. The Wing Training Team delivered three courses: > 30 Cadets on the Junior Non-Commissioned Officer (JNCO) course learnt about Communication, the role of JNCO, Leadership, Getting Things Done and Drill. > 15 Cadets on the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer course focused on Leadership and Drill instruction. > 9 Adults were instructed on topics that would aid them in preparing for interviews on becoming Uniformed Adult Staff. To complete the weekend, all three groups demonstrated what they had learnt through participation in a series of practical excercises.

JPF Awards to London & Middlesex Air Cadets One hundred youngsters from the London and Middlesex Wings of the Air Training Corps were presented with the prestigious Jack Petchey Achievement Awards at a special ceremony held at The Great Hall Kensington in February. The event honoured Achievement Award winners aged 11-25 who received medallions to go with their framed certificate and a cheque for £200 for their squadrons.

The awards scheme has contributed £297,000 to the London Wing of the Air Cadets since funding started in 2002 and £142,000 to the Middlesex Wing since funding began in 2007. Group Captain Les Hakin, Regional Commandant, said “I would like to thank the Jack Petchey Foundation for all the support to my units in Middlesex and London Wing as we all endeavour to stretch and mould the future citizens of this great land.”

CADET NEWS Sir Arthur Marshall Trophy Presentation In December 2012, 50F (Lambeth) Squadron was presented with the Sir Arthur Marshall Trophy for ‘Most Improved Squadron in the Corps’ by Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, Commandant Air Cadets. 50F’s Cadet Warrant Officer Aisha Naibe-Wey (Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for 2012) was chosen to collect the award from the Commandant on behalf of the squadron. She said “I am so proud that I got selected to receive the trophy for 50F, we have done so well! I still remember the days when there were only 5 cadets at 50F including me!” There are now over 30, due largely to the efforts of Flight Lieutenant Meriem Zidour, Officer Commanding 50F, under whose leadership the staff and cadets are highly motivated and work well as a team.

Marathon achievements Two members of staff from London & South East Region (LaSER) successfully completed the 2013 Virgin London Marathon, raising vital funds for service charities in the process! Flying Officer Wesley Pollard, from 1921 (Lewisham) Squadron ran to raise funds for The Royal Air Force Association (RAFA). Wesley completed the marathon in 4hrs 42mins and jointly raised £3,400 with another runner also raising money for RAFA. Squadron Leader Caroline Gourri, LaSER Media & Communications Officer (pictured) ran for the second consecutive year, raising money for Hounds for Heroes, who provide specially trained assistance dogs to injured service men and women and The Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers Orthopaedic Shoe Fund, who supply injured service persons recuperating at Headley Court. Caroline completed the marathon in 4hrs 16mins and raised just over £4,200 to be split equally between the two charities.

Great Day at Gatwick for Lewisham Air Cadets Air Cadets are not entirely unfamiliar with airfield operations. Links with the Royal Air Force mean that many cadets have been to an operational airfield, and seen how the system works. But the chance to see this at Gatwick Airport, the world’s busiest single runway airport, was a different proposition.

The difference was brought home on a number of occasions. The Terminal Team Leader Staum Parrett, escorted the cadets through security with their passports. The ‘airside’ tour started at the Fire Station, where the Watch Manager and his team explained their role, their equipment and demonstrated how they train. The impressive fire engines caught the imagination of cadets and staff alike – with their water cannons and rapid acceleration justifying their high price tag. The cadets also visited the old Control Tower, where National Air Traffic Service staff talked the cadets through a masterclass in modern aviation management. With full information radar, ground traffic and runway screens set up, and a panoramic view of the airfield, it was easy to understand just how challenging it would be to manage the airspace. 8

CADET NEWS Afternoon tea… by Royal appointment In May, Air Cadets from 56 (Woolwich) Squadron were invited to enjoy afternoon tea with HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on the Cutty Sark. The cadets represented the Air Cadet Organisation in celebration of the Duke’s 60 years as patron of the Cutty Sark. The Duke stepped aboard to the sound of a lone bugler and greeted his guests; paying particular attention to the Air Cadets from 56 Squadron after spotting them wearing his Duke of Edinburgh award badge. It was not long before Prince Philip was deep in discussion with the cadets about their DofE aspirations. The musical festivities kicked off with a performance from the Air Cadet band of 56 Squadron followed by the Sea Cadets, an Irish dance troop, a string quartet and a harpist.

Air Cadet Aims High

Cadet Sergeant Sam Austin from 6F (Romford) Squadron ATC has won a prestigious place on an Air Cadet Flying Scholarship programme. He will receive 12 hours of Pilot Training at Dundee Airport culminating in a solo flight. Successful completion will mean Sam can wear the coveted Air Cadet Flying Scholarship wings and the flying hours will count towards Private Pilot’s Licence training. Sergeant Austin has been an Air Cadet for over five years and during his time has gained places on a Combined Cadet Forces Leadership course and also on the Pilot Navigation Scholarship last year where he spent two weeks learning how to navigate aircraft. All of this is helping towards his goal of becoming a pilot with the Royal Air Force.

Romford Air Cadets celebrate 75 years... the hard way! Cadets and staff from 6F (Romford) Air Cadets ATC undertook a sponsored stretcher carry over a weekend around Harold Wood Park. The aim of the weekend was to carry a weighted stretcher around the path network to make 75 miles within 24 hours. The 75 miles was chosen as 6F Squadron celebrates

its 75th anniversary this year. The cadets managed the distance and completed it with an hour to spare. The money raised from the event will be used to update equipment for the Squadron such as training aids and adventure training equipment and help keep the Squadron minibus on the road.

CADET NEWS Airborne Operation Anniversary Operation Varsity saw 40,000 British and American troops land by glider and parachute in March 1945 to successfully secure a bridgehead across the River Rhine, opening the way for the advance into Germany. In March, a service at Earls Colne Airfield in Essex – where some of the aircraft involved took off from – marked the 68th anniversary of the mission and particularly the Glider Pilot Regiment’s involvement. Staff Sergeant Douglas Jack, a CCF cadet from Colfe’s School is pictured holding the Army Air Corp’s colours with Sergeant Freddy Levy (back left) holding Colfe’s School CCF colours.

Cadets at the Castle Two cadets from Royal Russell School volunteered to help support the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms – ‘The Nearest Guard’ – at the State Arrival of the President of the UAE at Windsor Castle. The cadets helped to pack the Standard and the ceremonial battle axes that the body guard carry whilst doing their duty. The cadets had a long day but it was enjoyable for them as they had ringside seats for the State Arrival and had lunch with the Yeomen of the Guard after the ceremony was over.

The Combined Cavalry Parade Ten cadets from Royal Russell School supported the Combined Cavalry Parade at Hyde Park in May. The cadets, working with those from Middlesex and North West London ACF, provided motive power for veterans in wheel chairs as well as helping with the distribution of programmes. One CCF cadet – Lance Corporal Farrington – was given the honour of carrying the Indian Cavalry banner in the Parade in front of 2,800 members of the regular and reserve cavalry and the public. He also had the opportunity to meet the Saluting Officer, Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal. A great day out for everyone which showed once again that the ACF and CCF can work together as the Army’s cadets.

The City of London Corporation and YOU London celebrate volunteering The City of London Corporation hosted a reception at the Guildhall on Monday 3 June 2013 which brought together adult volunteers from across the ten YOU London youth organisations to recognise and celebrate their valued contribution in delivering the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee events and Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. The event also presented an opportunity to thank those partners or family members whose valuable support for volunteers enabled them to fulfil their duties. The Representative Lord Mayor, Alderman Ian Luder, gave an address as did Colonel Hugh Purcell, Chair of YOU London (and CE of GL RFCA) who said, “Thanks to the commitment and time given by our adult volunteers, hundreds of children and young people were able to take part in the fantastic and inspiring events of 2012, many of whom might not otherwise have had the opportunity.”

Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets are sent to The Tower Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets for 2012/13, Petty Officer Cadet Jessica Burton, Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major Brogan Twite and Cadet Warrant Officer Aisha Naibe-Wey, were present at the first Investiture for the British Empire Medal in the UK for nearly 20 years. The Investiture was held at the Tower of London in December 2012 where the 26 recipients received their medals on behalf of The Queen, from the Lord-Lieutenant, Sir David Brewer. The cadets assisted by passing the medals to the Lord-Lieutenant to present, aiding some of the more elderly recipients up onto the medal platform and helping to host the recipients and their guests during the refreshments which were served after the ceremony. It was a terrific occasion at which the cadet’s smart uniforms and bearing were remarked on most favourably by those who attended. The three cadets are pictured with Sir David Brewer and General The Lord Dannatt, Constable of HM Tower of London.
