OUR MISSION

“

GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at Emory University

Dear Friends of GlobeMed, In the past fifteen months, a desire to take action within a small group of Emory undergraduates has blossomed into a robust sapling of a chapter organization destined to grow and flourish through any weather. We have had tremendous success in our first year but not without the agony of hard work and persistence that comes with building a movement from the ground up. In just one semester of campaigns we have raised over $3,000 for our partner, have recruited more than 25 staff members, have been granted a perpetual charter by Emory, and have spread the word for social justice to hundreds of people around our campus.

ABOUT US

4  OUR PARTNER

As co-presidents we are inspired by the passion and loyalty of our fellow GlobeMed members and supporters. While you read through our latest accomplishments we hope you share with us the incredible pride and honor we feel towards our chapter. More than just reading about our success, though, we hope we provoke some emotion within you that leads you to take action in your own way, however small or large, to promote social justice. Lastly, we want to send a massive thank you to all of our members, supporters, donors and friends. We owe all of our success to you. As we dream up the plans for next year, we will leave you with the wise words of Ralph Emerson: “To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” GlobeMed Love, Maria Leinonen and Hannah Chen 2011-2012 Co-Presidents

2011-2012 AT A GLANCE

GlobeMed members and supporters gathered for some delicious Thai Cuisine and a night full of inspiration and entertainment all while raising more than $1200 in support of the protection of Burmese migrant worker rights in Thailand.

GlobeMed at Emory University

ABOUT US GlobeMed at Emory was founded in the spring of 2011 and our partnership with the MAP foundation in Mae Sot, Thailand was formed in the following summer. Although we are just one of many undergraduate global health clubs at Emory University, we have set unprecedented records and reinvented the standard of health-oriented student-run organizations within the Emory community. Not only have we raised over $3,000 through individual giving and fundraising campaigns, but we have also recruited more than 25 committed staff members and have held close to thirty meetings throughout the year.

since our founding in april 2011 , our chapter has grown from 12 to 29 members.

Migrant Assistant Program Foundation WORKS IN CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

KEY FACT: Approximately 3 to 4 million Burmese migrants live in Thailand.

POPULATION: 1,000,000 Migrants from Burma face enormous hardships within Thailand. They live in constant fear of arrest, detention and deportation, work in the most dangerous and hazardous occupations, are regularly paid below minimum wage, and are generally subject to discrimination in Thai society. Language and culture barriers, fear of arrest, the cost of health care, and stringent work schedules prevent many Burmese migrants from accessing Thai health care. Despite the obstacles, most migrants persevere in Thailand as Thailand offers them opportunities impossible under the historically oppressive regime ruling Burma. Migrants continue to cross the border for the relative stability and freedom in Thailand.

ABOUT MAP FOUNDED IN 1996 MAP Foundation was founded to empower, educate, and fight for the rights of migrant workers in Thailand, especially Burmese workers. MAP strives to ensure that migrant communities can create and access information and services, eliminate exploitation of workers, improve the health and well-being of migrant communities, increase participation in advocacy and policy making, empower women, promote the right of migrant workers to form their own unions, and eliminate all forms of discrimination. MAP Foundation envisions a future where people from Burma have the right to stay securely within their home country as well as the right to migrate safely where the human rights and freedom of all migrants are fully respected and observed. GlobeMed partnered with MAP Foundation in 2011.

OUR PROJECT Migrant Assistant Program Foundation

GlobeMed at Emory University Why communicable disease prevention? Migrant communities in Thailand face significant health risks as their living conditions are temporary and lack proper sanitation and clean water. Failure of enforcing labor protection laws result in migrant workers facing dangerous working conditions. These factors adversely affect the health of migrant workers both at the workplace and at home. A holistic education program training migrant workers on health problem prevention and how to access health care in Thailand will be important step in empowering migrant workers.

5 COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING SESSIONS FOR THE HEALTH AND EMPOWERMENT OF MIGRANT WORKERS

$3,000 TO PURCHASE MATERIALS, FOOD, TRANSPORTATION TO RURAL LOCATION, AND INTERPRETERS FOR SESSIONS

Migrant Health and Well-Being Training Program" The Migrant Health and Well-Being training program focuses on empowering migrants to access health care and reducing exploitation of migrants. Migrants will learn basic information on maintaining healthy living, safety precautions at the workplace, labor laws relevant to health issues, how to access education for migrant children, and how to access health care provided by the Thai state. Our funding provides all the materials and food for five training sessions as well as the costs of interpreters (for the Burma-Thai language barrier) and transportation to the San Kamphaeng district of Chiang Mai, which has a population of 73,721 people. In the future, we hope to expand the program to more migrant communities on the outskirts of Chiang Mai.

CAMPAIGNS HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR

A Night for Rights Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction April 13, 2012 GlobeMed's first annual silent auction and benefit dinner, "A Night for Rights," drew out community members and students to bring awareness of social injustice. Attendees enjoyed delicious food, comedy improv performances, and educational talks by distinguished guest speakers Dr. James Scott, an anesthesiologist at Emory University Hospital, and Aun Lor, a health scientist at the CDC who was a previous refugee in Thailand. Many local community businesses contributed to the silent auction, and many university organizations contributed financially to the event.

GlobeMed's 5k Neon Run/Walk March 24, 2012 The Neon 5K Run/Walk was held for the first time in our Lullwater Park on March 24th. We were sponsored by many corporations including Starbucks and Chipotle to host the run to raise money and awareness about MAP Foundation, our partner, in a healthy and creative way. Over forty students participated in the run or volunteered during the event. The run was a success and we all had so much fun hosting, walking/ running, or both! We can't wait to expand on our original ideas of the run!

globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

2011-2012 CURRICULUM ORIENTATION Chapter members were equipped with a thorough understanding of the values of GlobeMed and explored their personal values.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

globalhealthU

POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.

As it was the inaugural year for Emory's GlobeMed chapter, globalhealthU played a critical role in engaging new members with thought-provoking questions and data. Establishing a strong spirit of inquiry, ghU coordinators aimed to provide members with the tools to build empathetic understanding and their own opinions on important issues about global health. Some of the topics that we explored this year include what it means to be a part of the GlobeMed movement and to work in pragmatic solidarity, the hurdles our NGO-partner MAP Foundation have to overcome, how poverty and health inequities are intertwined, and what some proposed solutions are to combat global poverty. GlobalhealthU is an eye-opening forum where both GlobeMed-ers and members of the college community can be immersed in unfamiliar–and often unsettling or ignored–situations that our global brothers and sisters have to endure on a daily basis so that informed action can take place.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.

globalhealthU ON-CAMPUS EVENTS

Facing AIDS December 1, 2011 In an effort to promote unity in the fight against HIV infection and stigma toward AIDS, GlobeMed at Emory asked members of the community to put a face to AIDS and write why they are facing AIDS in the days leading up to World AIDS Day, December 1, 2011. GlobeMed staffer Corinne wrote that she was “facing AIDS because everyone deserves to be healthy.” The event brought a humanistic focus on educating the Emory community—especially students —about HIV/AIDS, HIV testing, and preventative measures that can be taken to lower one's chances of contracting HIV.

Unity For Social Justice February 20, 2012

For World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2012, GlobeMed at Emory joined forces with Rollins School of Public Health graduate students to spread awareness to the Emory community about social injustices. GlobeMed also enlisted the help of five Emory professors to participate in a network-wide event where professors of various academic disciplines all over the country a portion of their class time incorporating the relevance of social justice issues in their perspective fields into lecture.

Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

We have held two GlobeMed retreats in the past year which have served to significantly strengthen the bond between our members. From hiking through the woods and skipping stones in the sweet rivers of North Georgia to throwing gutter ball after gutter ball in the bowling alley, we have left convention at the doorstep when it comes to our retreats. Us, "GlobeMedders" love nothing more than some good cuisine and having a funky time doing something new. We leave each event reenergized with a renewed perspective on our individual roles in promoting worldwide health equity and a few laughs to boot.

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

GLOBEMED AT EMORY UNIVERSITY joined 45 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 4th Annual World Day of Social Justice during the week of February 20, 2012, by asking professors to dedicate five minutes of class time to a discussion on how poverty and social justice relates to their field of study. GLOBEMED TEACH-IN HIGHLIGHTS: Five professors at Emory united to give students a diverse perspective on social injustice in honor of World Day of Justice. These professors integrated the effect of social injustices with topics ranging from the works of Anti-Nazi German writer, Stefan George, to the evolution of American Blues music in the Mississippi Delta region. As a result of these unified discussions many students with various interests were exposed to at least a little sampling of the devastating and pervasive effects of social injustice.

MORE WDSJ ACTION ----------------------------------UNITY FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE: We teamed up with graduate students at the Rollins School of Public Health to challenge Emory students to think critically about social justice and the future they wanted to help create.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice in 2007. Observation of WDSJ supports efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social wellbeing and justice for all.

2012 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT

2012 DELEGATES: Monica Kim and Katharine Yuengling

“The 2012 GlobeMed Summit was truly inspiring, and the experience and bonds we shared with the people there are unforgettable. The overall theme of “walking together, walking far” was incorporated in almost every aspect of the summit from the keynote speakers to the individual partnerships. The weekend tied together this idea that individuals and individual groups working together could have so much power to affect change. We are humbled by the sheer amount of greatness undergraduate students have achieved in other campuses and came back with memories and new friends. We are thankful and inspired to instill the same passion in others.” " -- Monica Kim & Katharine Yuengling, c/o 2014

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

“GlobeMed has been a fresh breath of air for me in the hopeful search to find different perspectives on the fight against health inequity. Instead of losing sight of the issues of poverty, GlobeMed gives me a constructive space for understanding and taking the first steps toward effecting change. I've learned the importance of discussion and theory, but GlobeMed has also given me the tools to walk the walk.” – Jessica Nguyen, c/o 2014

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

OUR FUTURE

In our first year, we have laid the strong foundation for GlobeMed at Emory. In the next few years, we will build upon this foundation and launch ourselves to greater heights. We hope to continue earning esteem by working hard to bring together students and professors, campus and community, those in need and those who can give into a partnership rooted in solidarity and sustainability. We aim to strengthen our partnership with MAP Foundation in the next year. Our partnership is truly unique and takes steady communication and dedication on both sides to grow. GlobeMed at Emory pledges to make our partnership our top priority. We will continue to work towards complete transparency between our partner, our executive board, and our general members in the year to come. Another one of our other major goals is expansion. In the next year, we hope to build a larger, more diverse community of students passionate about global health at Emory. We will continue to work closely with other student organizations and divisions of Emory University in organizing bigger, more impactful events. We hope the initiative we take to collaborate with others will inspire other groups to do the same and create a large health network on campus with open communication. By 2017, we want every undergraduate student on campus to have heard of GlobeMed, the positive change we incite, and our unique partnership with MAP Foundation. This is only the beginning. We are confident the next few years will foster tremendous growth and expansion for GlobeMed at Emory, and we are excited to see where the future takes us! As we grow our organization and our impact, please consider donating to our efforts to ensure the protection of the simple human rights of Burmese migrant workers living in Thailand.
