The shop, which covers 230 square metres, was designed in collaboration with British architects Universal Design Studio to refect the brand’s roots in the English countryside. The chic boutiques that line Frankfurt’s acclaimed Goethestrasse play host to some of the world’s fnest watch and jewellery brands, as Ruairidh Pritchard explains In a handful of cities there are streets where most of the world’s fnest luxury labels seem to have taken up residence. These avenues, roads and boulevards are havens where those with even the most discerning tastes can fnd everything they want, all within a few steps, and Frankfurt is lucky enough to have one of the most famous in Germany: Goethestrasse. Nicknamed Luxusgasse (‘luxury lane’) by locals, this tree-lined street was built between 1892 and 1894. Since then, it has survived more than a century of German history and is now home to a mix of classical, modernist and contemporary buildings that play host to some of the world’s biggest brands and most revered labels. Today, it is Germany’s third busiest luxury shopping street, providing visitors with 290 metres of temptation. Among the many distractions are international fashion houses such as Burberry, Gucci, Versace, Loro Piana, Church’s and Louis Vuitton, but the real gems are the high-end jewellery stores. The Tifany & Co store, for instance, is one of the fnest jewellery boutiques in Germany thanks to its extensive 2013 reft. Modelled on the company’s renowned New York fagship on Fifth Avenue, the store covers 280 square metres and is decorated in the brand’s signature magnolia and duck-egg blue. Once inside visitors fnd themselves surrounded by impeccably crafted pieces, with rows of cases displaying collections of highly covetable engagement rings and yellow diamonds, as well as the new Tifany T line. Francesca Amftheatrof. ‘I believe there is great power in simplicity, so I took the form of the T beyond style,’ Amftheatrof explains. ‘I wanted to create a symbol for modern life and its relentless energy that fows through New York and drives art and culture around the world. This is just the beginning of what I hope to accomplish.’ Another of the international jewellers that calls Goethestrasse home is just across the road from Tifany: the renowned French marque Cartier. Inside, beyond the red velvet ropes that guard the entrance, visitors are treated to a breathtaking vista of bejewelled rings, necklaces and brooches, many of which feature the brand’s iconic panther emblem, as well as fne timepieces, cufinks and leather goods. The store’s centrepiece is a spectacular foating crystal chandelier, which hangs above a circular cabinet that contains some of the most valuable jewels in Germany. the store also ofers world-class customer service and a bespoke setting facility. No trip to Goethestrasse would be complete without visiting German jewellery masters Wempe. The stark lines and bold shapes of the Bauhaus movement have left their mark on Germany’s contemporary fashion, as Hamish Monk discovers

It was the early 20th-century architectural movement that defned German style for decades, but Bauhaus is about far more than graphic design and boxy buildings; it has also become one of the most prolifc sources of inspiration in fashion. Staatliches Bauhaus – or just Bauhaus – was one of Europe’s most prominent art schools. Founded in Weimar in 1919 by German architect Walter Gropius, it saw some of the country’s most talented architects, graphic designers and artists pass through its doors. After moving from Weimar to Dessau and fnally Berlin, the school closed in 1933, but the infuence of the movement

96

84 /

90

it helped to create is still in evidence today, with places such as Berlin’s Bauhaus-Archiv/ Museum für Gestaltung – which exhibits many famous works of art and architecture and provides a comprehensive history – helping to create new generations of fans. Elements of Bauhaus survive in modernist architecture, revered by design enthusiasts the world over; the design principles of the movement are also present in contemporary fashion, where designers have found inspiration in Bauhaus’s modernist functionality. Geometric prints have long been a fashion staple, but recent years have seen them gain prominence among top designers. Geometric Lef: Peter Piloto autumn/winter 2014/15

that many consider polar opposites: practical functionality and feminine grace. Belted, wide-cut culottes worn with three-quarterlength-sleeved cashmere jumpers over crisp white cotton shirts led the way in functionality. Femininity came from sweatshirts with blownout shoulders and ruched sleeves, matched with wide-legged, straight-cut trousers, all with razor-sharp pleats, creating a clash between playful and grounded silhouettes that

and mathematically exact angles, shapes, repetition and interplay are all Bauhaus signatures that have been reinterpreted by modern-day fashion houses. In recent seasons, central motifs and bold patterns have played a large part in menswear and womenswear collections from around the world. In 2013, Italian label Iceberg showcased Bauhausinspired kinetic patterns and bold geometric designs in a palette of punchy primary colours throughout its menswear collection. Similarly, Peter Pilotto’s autumn/winter 2014/15 womenswear collection featured strong angled patterns and interconnected shapes in block colours – strongly reminiscent of Bauhaus construction – across form-ftting turtlenecked sweaters and wide-legged trousers. For spring/summer 2015, two German labels have taken Bauhaus-inspired design to new heights, reinterpreting the shapes, architectural structure and patterns of the movement to create fuid, serene and strikingly beautiful womenswear collections. Jil Sander’s spring/summer 2015 collection faultlessly combined two design principles

echoes the interplay of straight lines and curves seen in many Bauhaus masterpieces. Even so, it’s not just the silhouettes used in Jil Sander’s collection that are reminiscent of the Bauhaus movement; the monochromatic kinetic prints, which feature prominently throughout the collection on sweatshirts, skirts and blouses, are unmistakably derived from it. The collection’s muse was Annemarie Schwarzenbach, a Swiss writer and photographer who lived in Berlin during the early 1930s while the Bauhaus school was in residence, when its infuence was at its peak and functional modernity was the height of fashion. Similarly, quintessentially German designer label Hugo Boss turned to Bauhaus for its spring/summer 2015 womenswear collection. This season, Boss Woman’s ofering consists of two-piece tailoring, pinafore dresses and pencil skirts, all featuring abstract geometric and angular prints. The inclusion of boxy jackets, sheer panelled pleats and shimmering fabrics catches the eye, but the collection’s design focus is set squarely on straight lines and right angles.

Belted coat dresses in a geometric print hitting just above the knee, featuring exaggerated sleeves and stif collars, paired with gladiator sandals with leather straps winding up to sit just below the hemline create an aesthetic focused on angles, interconnected shapes and lines – all key elements of the Bauhaus style. However, it is Boss Woman’s statement piece for this season that best encapsulates Bauhaus’ infuence over contemporary fashion: the boxy leather jacket with right-angled epaulettes and square leather panelling in concrete grey, with highlighted white collar and small circular white popper buttons, perfectly refects the architectural style signatures of the Bauhaus movement. While the infuence of Bauhaus – arguably Germany’s greatest contribution to architecture – is still evident in modern construction, it is clear that the movement has had an enduring impact on fashion, allowing designers to combine functionality and style in a way that could only be derived from German design bauhaus.de, jilsander.com, hugoboss.com

A

s anyone with even a passing interest in beauty knows, achieving the natural look often requires a lot more work than the name implies. In a similar vein, natural beauty products frequently require a great deal more development than their synthetic counterparts and it takes years of research and refnement to make the most of plant properties and naturally occurring oils. Germany has one of the biggest cosmetic industries in Europe, valued at €13.5bn, and is leading the way with a more natural approach to beauty. Germany has long been an innovator in the beauty industry. In 1911, Paul Beiersdorf, a Hamburg-based pharmacist, developed the frst cream to bind oil and water – today, his product sells in 150 countries as Nivea, the largest skincare brand in the world. The country has enjoyed a long association with health and wellness and it remains a growing industry throughout Germany, with natural, organic and fair-trade products favoured in every feld. Fresh-faced, pared-back beauty is Germany’s signature look. From Claudia Schifer and Heidi Klum to newcomer Anna Ewers, the country’s beauty icons and top

models all boast perfect complexions and minimal make-up. As a result, great skin is central to achieving the classic German look. ‘I think that beauty begins with beautiful skin,’ actress Diane Kruger told E News. ‘I am very strict about protecting my skin.’ It’s unsurprising, therefore, that Dr Hauschka, which has produced organic skincare and cosmetics for almost 50 years, has become one of the country’s leading beauty brands. ‘Natural skincare is the essential partner to a healthy lifestyle,’ explains Elaine Robinson, the brand’s head of training and aesthetics. ‘At Dr Hauschka we use no artifcial fragrances, preservatives or azo dyes. Instead, we harness the protective, fortifying and nourishing natural raw materials with formulas that we have been developing since 1967.’ The label’s signature products incorporate a vast range of natural ingredients. Its cleansing cream features sweet almond meal to exfoliate, calendula extracts to clarify and St John’s wort and chamomile to soothe, while the equally popular facial toner uses natural witch hazel to refne pores and support skin elasticity. Dr Hauschka’s Wild Rose day cream has become something of a cult product among beauty editors, thanks to its high concentration of rose extract, enriched with rose water

and essential oils from damask roses. The resulting cream is wonderfully rich, soothing any skin irritation to leave behind a perfectly balanced complexion. Weleda is another beauty brand that has beneftted from Germany’s predilection for organic products. ‘In Germany, awareness of our responsibility towards others and to nature is widespread,’ explains company spokesman Frédéric Anklin. ‘More and more people are wishing to use products which are good both for themselves and for nature.’ The company always looks to nature frst for solutions to skin concerns, a technique that has proved

Natural skincare and cosmetics are rapidly becoming the first choice of beauty fans

successful. ‘Nature provides us with ingredients that can, for example, strengthen the skin’s inherent capacity to regenerate itself, and we know it works because we’ve used it for more than 90 years,’ says Anklin. The company is remarkable in that it favours natural solutions at every stage of the production process. ‘Our approach is based on the principle of self-regulation found within nature,’ Anklin continues. ‘Even the biodynamic gardens we use to cultivate plants follow the same principle and we rely on natural predators to counter pests, rather than using pesticides.’ The result is a range of products

that address a wide variety of skin concerns, from body wash and hand creams that quickly become daily essentials to a calendula-infused cream specially designed for sensitive skin. Natural cosmetics are also gaining in popularity across Germany. Sans Soucis uses the thermal spring water which is naturally produced in its hometown of Baden-Baden to create botanical and mineral-rich natural cosmetics. The label’s light-refecting Thermal Moist foundation features natural hyaluronic acid to ensure long-lasting moisture and peach kernel oil to condition. Every item, from the vibrant eyeshadow palettes to the bold lipsticks, excludes mineral oils and parabens and many contain up to 70% natural ingredients. The value of Germany’s natural cosmetics industry is set to surpass €1bn this year and the trend towards more ethical, organic skincare and make-up looks set to grow and grow. From specialist brands such as Weleda and Dr Hauschka to natural ranges by retail giants such as Nivea, natural skincare and cosmetics are fast becoming beauty fans’ frst choice – proof, if any were needed, that the natural look is here to stay nivea.com, drhauschka.com, weleda.co.uk, sanssoucis.com

WEMPE Wempe is on a mission to keep watch lovers happy with the latest addition to its Zeitmeister line. The new fagship style, the Wempe Zeitmeister Glashütte i/SA Chronograph Mondphase Vollkalender, combines two of the most popular horological features of previous styles, a chronograph and a full calendar including moon phase rank to chart the lunar cycle. Other highlights include a practical date display made up of a circle of dates that surrounds the dial. Once completed, each timepiece must undergo a rigorous 15-day testing procedure and is only approved if it reaches Wempe’s exacting standards. 44: Paved With Gold

Франкфурт globalblue.com

50: From Every Angle

54: Pure Perfection

Пожалуй, это еще одно доказательство (если оно вообще необходимо), что естественный образ останется в моде еще надолго. nivea.com, drhauschka.com, weleda.co.uk, sanssoucis.com 80: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free

从魏玛搬迁到德绍 globalblue.com

bauhaus.de, jilsander.com, hugoboss.com

PHOTO: WELEDA

nivea.com, drhauschka.com, weleda.co.uk,

POSTCARD

LEICA The Leica – arguably the world’s most famous camera – was originally created in 1914 by German optical engineer Oskar Barnack, an employee of the Leitz factory in Wetzlar. The frst still camera for the 35mm flm format, the model revolutionised the world of photography, vastly increasing creative opportunities for photographers, who until then had been held back by cumbersome equipment. By 1925, the Leica was a leader in its feld, and went on to capture some of globalblue.com

the most famous images of the past century, including the iconic portrait of Cuban revolutionary Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara. To this day the name Leica is a mark of excellence in the world ofphotography, and each new release is at the forefront of design, technology and excellence. No camera enthusiast can resist the lure of a Leica, and no collection should be without at least one. hl Leica, Am Salzhaus 2, 60311 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 920 7070, leica-camera.com * for map go to page 68
