THE LAST NIGHT INN Synopsis

SHORT SYNOPSIS In a night of coincidences, betrayals and crime, the Inn will no longer be refuge for the underbelly of society. The Last Night Inn follows four intercutting stories of desperation, sex and deceit taking place at this crappy LA motel.

SUMMARY The Last Night Inn is an adaptation of Anthony Montes’ sold out play “The Last Night Inn” which was performed on stage several seasons at the Victory Theater in Burbank, CA. The Last Night Inn presents four intercutting stories taking place at the same crappy LA motel in a night when secrets are revealed and drama is doomed to unfold. The Last Night Inn, follows an assortment of characters who inhabit the fringes of society and share the dubious distinction of checking into the Last Night Inn during the same unfortunate night. Low level mobsters who find themselves scrambling to save their lives when their plan to win favor with their boss backfires; two lost souls who make a desperate attempt to reunite and correct the sins of their past; a troubled woman, who finds herself at the end of her rope only to discover that fate sometimes has it’s own plans; and a man with a young girl, seeking revenge for the damage done to them. The Inn will no longer be refuge for the underbelly of society; crime and tragedy is waiting for them.

THE LAST NIGHT INN Director’s statement

Anthony Montesʼ screenplay, The Last Night Inn, was born out of his play of the same name about the guests on one night in a disreputable hotel. He has expanded it in story line and characters, as well as scope and complexity, to create this screenplay. His unique characters are in offbeat situations, traveling though the shady world of The Last Night Inn, where situations aren't always as they seem, and the state of affairs turn like an OʼHenry short story through to the end. My first challenge was to create a world where the more peripheral of society's members with their dubious motives come together in interwoven story lines. A world where its hot narrowly focused lights reveal the characters faces and the shadows hide their secrets. With a narrative that is specifically crafted to unfold and invite the audience into this world. I was most excited by the challenge of balancing undisguised emotions with deception, butchery with innocence, and humor with drama. I've lived with these characters for a long time and I looked forward to breathing cinematic life as the audience meets each and is engaged through their journey. The ensemble cast brings dimension that elevates the words off the page into complex interesting characters. The talented crew has realized the visual style. I know that audiences will be drawn into the passions, treachery, mysteries, despair, and the macabre that define this nights stay at Last Night Inn. - John Heath

THE LAST NIGHT INN Production Notes

Adaptation and rights The Last Night Inn was originally a stage play, written by Anthony Montes, that showcased three different stories taking place inside the room 234 at The Last Night Inn on three different nights. The play premiered at the Downtown Playhouse on March, 2004; it’s great reception allowed for sold out nights. The play was mounted again in 2012 at the Victory Theater in Burbank, CA where yet again, every show was sold out. During the last run of The Last Night Inn, Anthony Montes, was repeatedly approached to have the stage play turned into a feature film, but it wasn’t until November 2013 when he partnered with Glix Entertainment to have the stage play adapted and produced. Anthony Montes did an amazing job adapting the original script into a screenplay, adding a new storyline with interesting complex characters and having the stories happen simultaneously, to allow for the different characters to interact, connect and affect one another. The result was an unexpected night of casualties, crime and unavoidable drama. Pre-production and Principal Photography Making an independent film, on a limited budget was a big challenge that came with great rewards. Our goal with The Last Night Inn was to achieve high production value on a small budget. Because all the stories take place inside the motel, we created a set that was a character itself, allowing for the physical space to affect the characters and the stories that it hosted. After countless sleepless nights of pre-production, The Last Night Inn set was designed and built at Glix Studios’ sound stage, allowing for a complete customization and the possibility to pre-light and save valuable production time. In a record time of 12 shooting days, The Last Night Inn successfully completed principal photography. This was only possible thanks to everyone's commitment and passion towards the project. Post production The Last Night Inn is currently in post-production and a wonderful team has come on board, including the band Cross My Heart Hope to Die who has expressed interest in providing soundtracks to the project.
