Volunteers in the Spotlight Call for action! Help us feed our neighbors by donating food through the Lift Urban Portland Virtual Food Drive or the Portland Food Project. Find out how easy it is by turning to page 4.

They cook, they serve, they walk, they greet you with a friendly smile. They volunteer. And together, they’ve touched nearly every facet of Lift Urban Portland.

At this year’s Summer Garden Fête, two longtime volunteers will be honored for their contributions. Kathy Buss and Nikki Director have been named the 2014 Spotlight Award recipients. The award is given during the annual summer fundraiser to individuals who have contributed significantly to the mission of Lift Urban Portland. Nikki’s volunteerism has touched many of Lift Urban Portland’s programs and customers. She has served on the board and on nearly every committee. She has put in countless hours – and miles – to make the annual May Food Drive a success. Not only does she organize the event, she walks the neighborhoods building relationships with business partners and delivering promotional posters.

Many people will recognize Nikki by her welcoming smile. She serves as the greeter at the monthly Oregon Food Bank Harvest Share, welcoming neighbors and directing them to the fresh fruits and vegetables.

“To say Nikki is a tireless volunteer is to understate her impact on Lift Urban Portland,” says Susan Milstein, Lift Urban Portland board president. (continued on page 5)

wellness Cooking Classes Happening at Northwest Towers This August, parents and children living in Northwest Towers are able to attend weekly cooking classes. The eight-part class will include the preparation of eight meals, using ingredients commonly available through the Lift Urban Portland food pantry. The classes also cover choosing healthy ingredients, basic kitchen skills and food safety guidelines. Lift Urban Portland volunteer and Northwest Tower resident, Twyla Nicholson, leads the classes.

Upcoming Classes A Matter of Balance

Legacy Classes

The class is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels for older adults. Three coaches have completed the training class. Additional classes will be scheduled for the fall and winter.

The clinical staff at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center partners with Lift Urban Portland to provide health and wellness activities for Home Forward’s affordable housing communities, including Northwest Towers, Gallagher Plaza, Williams Plaza, Fountain Place and Medallion Apartments.

Volunteers Dig in to Community Gardens

Brokers from Windermere Stellar’s Portland Northwest office use their Community Service Day in June to dig into our community gardens. The volunteers helped plant, weed and water the gardens at the First Immanuel Lutheran Church location. 2

Volunteers from the Wells Fargo Group construct garden fences at the White Shield location to keep hungry deer from devouring the produce. The barriers will hopefully lead to juicy tomatoes later in the summer!

Quarterly classes will begin in October. The programs will include blood pressure and cholesterol screenings and a variety of health and wellness presentations. LEGACY GOOD SAMARITAN MEDICAL CENTER is one of our major community partners and long-time supporters. At its Northwest neighborhood facility, Legacy supports a range of groups that are building a healthier community, and assists us with training options for our Wellness program.

Pantry renamed ‘Preston’s Pantry’ The Lift Urban Portland pantry is being renamed to honor long-time volunteer and pantry founder, Preston Holt. The pantry is now called “Preston’s Pantry.”

Holt has served Lift Urban Portland for 24 years as a volunteer and board member. During that time, he has spearheaded the implementation of many key programs in addition to the pantry, including Food for Kids Backpacks, Adopt-a-Highrise and food box deliveries.

The renaming follows Holt’s recent recognition by the Oregon Food Bank. In June, Preston received the Volunteer Excellence award. The award is given to a volunteer from an OFB partner agency who has made an outstanding contribution toward ending hunger in the state. “The main thing I like about volunteering is working with the program participants,” says Holt.

Preston’s Pantry is located at 1808 NW Irving Street, at First Immanuel Lutheran Church. During the fiscal year that ended June 30, the pantry served 4,727 people and was staffed by 41 volunteers who donated 2,518 hours of time.

LPGA Lifts Up Charities LPGA fans have an opportunity to support Lift Urban Portland when they buy a $25 ticket to the Portland Classic, happening Aug. 28-31, at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. Lift Urban Portland Joins the Portland Food Project Lift Urban Portland has joined the Portland Food Project as its newest pantry partner. Beginning in August, Lift Urban Portland’s pantry at 1808 NW Irving Street will be receiving a minimum of 300 pounds of non-perishable food on a semi-monthly basis.

The Portland Food Project is a volunteer non-profit that collects and distributes food in a unique way. Neighborhood coordinators distribute green food bags to residents who want to donate. Residents then add one extra item to their weekly grocery list that they place in the green bag. The coordinator collects the bags every other month and leaves an empty bag to begin the process again. Thanks to the generosity of more than 900 green bag donors, the Portland Food Project currently distributes more than 10,500 pounds of food to 12 pantry partners.

“We are pleased to include our northwest neighbors who are struggling with hunger by providing an ongoing supply of food to the Lift Urban Portland pantry,” said Richard Nudelman, program coordinator for the Portland Food Project. Buying one extra item each time you shop will make mealtime a bit brighter for our hungry northwest neighbors “one green bag at a time.”

Food Drive Fills the Warehouse

Through the generosity of neighbors and donors, the Lift Urban Portland food warehouse is once again full. The annual May Food Drive brought in $8,307.35 in cash through donations and the Virtual Food Drive, and 4,005.9 pounds of food, valued at $6,689.87, for a total of $14,997.22 worth of donated food!

Lift Urban Portland would like to extend a thank you to everyone who donated and housed barrels, cash boxes and drop-off locations. Many community partners also hosted events, including Ben & Jerry’s Uptown, Caffe Mingo, Fireside Restaurant, PREM Group Property Management, Seams to Fit, Child’s Play, Santa Fe Taqueria, Blush Beauty Bar, Cinema 21, and Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center.

The Virtual Food Drive – an online cart that allows anyone to donate with the click of a button – continues year-round. For more information, visit www.lifturbanportland.org.

Volunteers in the Spotlight (continued from page 1)

Mexico

Kathy is known as the heart and soul of Meals on Wheels People’s senior lunch program at Irving Street Center. Lift Urban Portland volunteers work under her direction to welcome diners, serve the meals and clean up.

In addition to working with Lift Urban Portland volunteers, Kathy has joined them in their efforts. This will be the third year Kathy is giving her time to the annual fundraiser, at which she and Nikki are being honored. She’s also the “cooking force” behind the Lift Urban Portland Christmas Dinner at Congregation Beth Israel. Serving as head chef, she ensures plenty of food is prepared and served on time.

“Kathy inspires all – diners and volunteers – with her huge smile and genuine interest in their lives,” says Milstein.

Rosenfeld Food Fund Approaches $10,000

Italy

At last August’s garden party we announced the Eve and Alan Rosenfeld Food Fund, named for the recipients of our 2013 Spotlight Award. Congregation Beth Israel seeded the fund with a $2,000 gift. Since then, more than fifty others have stepped up to honor this remarkable couple by donating to the fund, which helps stock our warehouse with groceries for the pantry, Food for Kids Backpacks and food box program. By the end of June, donations had reached $9,628.

For more than 30 years the Rosenfelds have been hands-on volunteers in every aspect of our organization. In addition, they have been instrumental in securing community support for our programs. Their example continues to inspire others— and the donations keep coming in.
