Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me It is hard to imagine a world without Big Star, the seminal power pop act whose intense guitar-driven pop songs influenced generations of musicians, from REM and The Flaming Lips to Primal Scream and Teenage Fanclub. Despite never receiving the commercial attention they deserved in their initial 1970s incarnation, Big Star’s music proved so vital that it granted the band a resurgence decades later. Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me charts the origins of rock’s most enduring cult phenomenon, combining never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews and a musical tribute to the Memphis musicians. Chosen by Monorail Film Club.

The Black Pirate Appearing without the benefit of CGI or 3D, swashbuckling silent screen star Douglas Fairbanks Sr created some of the most spectacular stunt sequences in movie history. An athletic, devil-may-care spirit, he found one of his best roles in The Black Pirate, a rip-roaring tale of adventure on the high seas. Determined to avenge the death of his father at the hands of scurvy-ridden pirates, incognito nobleman Fairbanks secretly joins their numbers. Along the way there is action aplenty with sword fights, death-defying escapes and the chance to rescue a beautiful princess. All in a day’s work for Doug. An early Technicolor gem for thrill-seekers of all ages.

Black Sabbath

I tre volti della paura Experience Three Faces of Fear as FrightFest proudly presents the newly restored edition of Mario Bava’s classic horror anthology Black Sabbath. Join horror icon Boris Karloff as he hosts and stars in a trilogy of terror from the golden era of Italian shockers: a beautiful woman is terrorised by her psycho ex-lover, a family becomes a feeding ground when their wounded father returns from vampire hunting, and a thieving nurse is haunted by the spirit of a dead medium. Screening for the first time in English and in stunningly pristine condition, you’ll be absolutely amazed by how scary this film still is. Retrospective premiere.

Blancanieves Pablo Berger’s dazzling Blancanieves relocates the classic tale of Snow White to 1920s Spain. Carmen is the daughter of a famous matador grief-stricken by the death of his wife. She is raised by her flamenco-loving grandmother and a tyrannical stepmother. Her father trains her in the art of bullfighting, a skill that stands her in good stead when she flees for her life and takes sanctuary with a travelling troupe of bullfighting dwarves. Shot in sumptuous black and white and dispensing with dialogue, this is a wonderfully atmospheric, deeply romantic melodrama told to a magical musical rhythm.

Blood Brian Cox, Paul Bettany, Mark Strong and Stephen Graham provide the acting muscle in this mean, melancholy thriller based on the television series Conviction. Joe (Bettany) and Chrissie (Graham) are brothers and fellow detectives raised on their father’s suffocating memories of days when the force didn’t need to worry about due process and liberal qualms. The brothers are investigating the murder of a twelve-year-old girl. When the suspected killer looks like he’s going to walk free, they are determined to take control of the situation. Crossing the line tips the film into a compelling morality tale where actions have tragic consequences and guilt tears people apart.
