COVER GIRL HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE FITNESS-MODELING INDUSTRY? My background is actually in fashion modeling, I did my first fashion show when I was just 5 years old. These days I prefer the challenge that comes with being in shape for Fitness Modeling and I have been fortunate to have had opportunities to do a lot of International fitness modeling over the last couple of years. My most important role is as a Mother to my 3 children, DiorRose 6 years, Carlos 7 years, and Annaliese 13 years old. Growing up I trained in Early Childhood Education, Computer technology & Personal Training, all professions that I decided not to pursue. I also worked in event Management for a few years organizing fashion shows and corporate functions. I started training when I was 16 years old working part time in the gym, although I didn’t start training seriously until 2002. It wasn’t until I competed in 2007 as a Novice when I won my class, best posing routine & Overall Figure Champion that I knew that the fitness industry was where I was meant to be. After spending my entire life wondering what the heck I was going to do with my life, I finally knew!! That was a great moment.

MY TYPICAL DAY I love everything that comes with training, the healthy lifestyle, positive attitude and the way training and being in shape makes me feel. My basic training philosophies have always been simple, train heavy, train hard and do the basics well. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I don’t like to do anything by halves, and for that reason I split my workouts into 6 training days, that way I can really give all my focus to each and every muscle group without having to train for marathon lengths of time. My favorite time of day to train is in the morning after I drop the kids off at school and before I do anything else, I find that by making my training a priority and doing it before anything else it gets done. When I am dieting for a contest it is even more important to take this opportunity to train while my energy levels are high right after I’ve had breakfast and there are more carbs in my body than there will be for the rest of the day. Being a mother of three children is pretty hectic – no two days are the same and often things don’t go the way I plan. During competition season I have to make sure that I am extremely organized so that I am able to get in quality time with each of my three children along with training/cardio and meals.

COVER GIRL FIGHTING DEPRESSION When I started writing this interview about my diet, training and basic information about myself, as I have many times before, I was just going through the motions of answering the questions. Then, I decided that I wanted this interview to be different; I wanted to get a little more personal and to tell you that I train because I have to. It has become a necessary part of my life, and in telling you this, I hope I might help someone out there who may be struggling with their own self doubt and let them know they are not alone. I have suffered with depression for the past 7 years. For the first few years, with the help of antidepressants and working with someone to provide me with the tools to cope with the feelings I was having, things improved greatly and my over time my outlook on life changed. Training has become a priority in my daily life. I am not on antidepressants now and haven’t been for the past 2 years. Training has taken that place and works just as well for me. Competing in figure might seem like a strange choice of professions for me to pursue since I’m putting myself out there to be judged when my self confidence already hangs on a wire. But, I often found myself not wanting to train, so I decided that if I had goals and a good reason to do it that would motivate me then it would work. And it does. Depression is a very scary thing to go through, not just for the person going through it but also for those that are close to them. During the darkest moments of my depression, I hated myself. I thought I was worthless and often thought myself too ugly to leave the house. I would have panic attacks, and I would feel like this for months at a time. My head felt cluttered with sadness; I couldn’t see any good in myself and I couldn’t trust my own thoughts. If it wasn’t for my husband and my love for my children, I don’t know if I would have made it though this time in my life. I love training most of the time, and weight training releases the chemicals that keep me feeling on top of things and on track. I occasionally have times when I start to feel ‘sad’. But, I have learned to watch for those signs and act on them before they get worse. It’s never been as bad as it was 7 years ago, and I would never want to go back there. It was the most awful time. I am enjoying competing and will most probably be doing it for a very long time. Training is my drug of choice! I hope that in reading this I might have touched someone who might be going through their own struggles with depression. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and when I look at where I was 7 years ago and how far I have come, it reminds me that we are our own worst enemies. When you’re in the mist of depression, it’s hard to see the reality of a situation because in your own mind it just feels so bad even when it’s not. 10

BEING A MOM AN WHAT MY KIDS THINK OF COMPETING For the 2 little ones, it’s a life style; it’s just how it is and how it always has been. Dior-Rose age 6 tells me she’s on a diet whenever I give her something to eat that she doesn’t like! And, she hates it when I wear tanner. Carlos age 7, says he’s going to grow up to be a giant and Annaliese (13) loves seeing me in the magazines. We talk to them about the food we eat and why we eat it, what’s good for their bodies and what will help them to build muscle and what will make them fat. It’s important for children to grow up with knowledge of food; it’s amazing that so many people don’t understand diet and the impact it has on their life. So, we try to educate them whenever an opportunity arises.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR COMPETITIVE FITNESS CAREER? My greatest achievement to date is becoming the first ever female from New Zealand to compete in The Figure Olympia in 2011.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING YOU DEAL WITH ABOUT CONSISTENTLY STAYING SHAPE? Juggling motherhood and competing is definitely the most challenging aspect about staying in shape at a Pro level. I am lucky to have a very supportive husband who always helps keep me driven to achieve my goals

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING A FITNESS MODEL? It’s your job to stay fit, healthy and in great shape all year, as you never know when the opportunity for a shoot will come up. The fitness industry has to be one of the best to be in if your goals are to stay positive, motivated and healthy!

MY TYPICAL DIET TO STAY IN SHAPE I’m constantly altering and tweaking my diet based on the last show and what I think might work better next time. I prefer my diet to be easy and a bit boring so I don’t have to do much thinking about what my next meal is going to be. My diet often feels a little like ground hog day LOL however, I find that this is the easiest way for me to stick to my eating plan. I usually start out the day with oats, protein powder and berries, train, then have a meal replacement shake, lunch is fish or chicken with rice and salad, in the afternoon I have a meal replacement shake then dinner fish or chicken with vegetables and rice.
During competition prep

I LOVE EVERYTHING THAT COMES WITH TRAINING, THE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND THE WAY TRAINING AND BEING IN SHAPE MAKES ME FEEL.

I substitute shakes for meals, just to make my metabolism work harder to burn the calories. And of course my calories decrease the closer I get to my competition, which can be challenging as my cardio generally increases about the same time.I think of food purely as an energy and growth source. • Oats, protein powder & blue berries & raspberries, strawberries • Sushi (after training) • 200g fish or chicken with rice • Protein shake • 200g fish or chicken & vegetables. • Protein shake with water.

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR YOU IN FUTURE? I’m not entirely sure, I like to take life as it comes to some degree without too much planning in advance; it leaves opportunities for exciting adventures to come into your life. We travel allot and make allot of impulsive decisions so who knows! But whatever I’m doing I know it will be the perfect thing for me.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL SEPARATES YOU FROM OTHER TALENTS IN THE CURRENT INDUSTRY? I believe we can pick our seat in life, I choose to sit on top of the world. I will do my best to reach out and bring anyone I can just as high. I work in an industry filled with highly motivated and beautiful people. I feel very blessed to have been noticed and hope to inspire & motivate everyone I meet along the way. It’s pretty amazing what our bodies are capable of handling, and just how much you can actually push it without it breaking! Competing is such a personal experience and what works for one person may not work for someone else. It’s learning the science of your own body and that comes with the experience of doing it over and over and tweaking things here and there until you find out what works, and what doesn’t. It’s a continual process of trial and unfortunately error and with each show you get to know your body better. It’s the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out. When it comes to shaping your body there are no magic pills or short cuts. First you’ve got to have a goal, so you know where you’re heading, then dedication and the motivation to get there. Often we experience bumps along the way; I do not believe that struggles are a sign of life falling apart, but rather a sign of life falling into place. Setbacks in the journey to achieving your goals only make the success that much sweeter. I believe the biggest obstacle standing in the way of most people achieving their goals is their mind set. Once you believe you are capable and anything is possible, then there are no limits. That’s when life gets really exciting!

YOU ARE DEFINITELY ONE OF THE SEXIEST HOOTERS GIRLS IN AMERICA, HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THEM? When I was 20, while attending college, I trained Arabian horses and gave riding lessons, to make a little money on the side. Unfortunately, there came a day when I found it necessary to relocate my horses to a better ranch, which meant that I would need to make a more consistent paycheck. Waitressing would afforded me a flexible schedule and quick cash so I figured, among other possibilities, I would apply at restaurants. I was drawn to Hooters because of its fun, laid-back atmosphere, but mostly because it isn’t easy to be chosen as a Hooters girl and, loving a challenge, I wanted to see if they thought I had what it took to join their team. I had also been toying with the idea of modeling and I felt that being a Hooters Girl could give me a push in the right direction. They hired me on the spot and after working there for a month or so, I was sent by them to do a shoot with photographer Aaron Riveroll for an Oceanside Hooters calendar insert. Being a Hooters Girl has been great - I get to use hula-hoops as accessories, use my sassy, sarcastic attitude, play games with the guests and compete in bus-tub races with my girls, all while making great tips and meeting the coolest people out there. (And just as a side note - to all those folks who still believe in the stereotypical image of a Hooters Girl - I ask if you “want fries with that?,” not if you “want a lap dance?” and I wear a tank top and shorts to work, not a thong and pasties.) I absolutely love my job! So, if your ever in the Oceanside area, stop by and see me! HAS ANYONE INSPIRED YOU IN BECOMING A GLAMOUR MODEL? I am inspired by the creativity I see in the professionals I work with everyday. Watching my friends create awesome photos/videos, and go on exciting, interesting jobs is inspiring. When you’re surrounded by very creative people that are always pushing the limits of their medium, it’s easy to continue raising the level of your own bar to get what you want from life. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET IN MAINTAINING SUCH AN INCREDIBLY SEXY BODY? My body is always a work-in-progress. I rarely drink alcohol, I “try” to stay away from white carbs and I drink a good amount of water, of course. However, recently, my “secret weapon” has been an increase in green tea, protein and Norm Johnson, my trainer. For the first time in my life, Im lifting weights, eating protein at every meal and trying to sculpt my body rather than simply diet and exercise. Hopefully, it will continue to improve.

18

GLAM JAM JUNE 2013

GLAMJAMMAG.COM

WHAT PART OF THAT SEXY BODY ARE YOU THE MOST PROUD OF? The sexiest parts of my body, I would have to say, is my eyes and hair. “Eyes are the window to the soul” and therefore I believe they can definitely be someone’s sexiest feature, and all men (and women alike) love long, healthy hair, no matter what they claim outwardly. I was lucky enough to be born with extremely long eyelashes and very thick silky hair, which I go to great lengths to take care of. I never wear fake eyelashes and I always take my make-up off, night no matter how crazy tired I am. I never use extensions in my hair and use only the best nourishing shampoos and oils to keep it healthy. I take great care of my hair and eyelashes to keep them both ready for their next sultry shot. TELL US ONE UNUSUAL OR UNIQUE THING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW. An unusual fact that most people don’t know about me is that I have a great interest in the psychology behind marketing and advertising. I would love to work in the field of marketing and advertising and/or commercials. What I enjoy most about the subject, is the idea of the subliminal messages sent to the consumer, through advertising, without our conscious mind even being aware of it. An example of this would be: How Hooters uses a distinct color of orange as their theme color because that particular shade of orange invokes hunger or that doctors/dentist offices are painted sea-foam-green because it is calming. I would love to be an advertising consultant for ads on T.V. or print and help subliminally sway consumer decisions. I love the overlap that this interest in marketing, at times, works with my modeling and promotional goals and pursuits. WHAT IS THE MOST ADVENTUROUS THING YOU HAVE DONE RECENTLY? Recently, I went to Lake Havasu and learned to wake-board. That may not seem like much to some, but I had never done it before and I had an absolute blast! In the end, I was able to stand up one handed. I was pretty damned proud of myself, despite quite a few face-plants. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS WITHIN THE GLAMOUR INDUSTRY? I love modeling and doing promotional work and will continue working with different companies. I would enjoy traveling more for work and am looking into as many great opportunities to do just that, within the modeling industry. You can find me on my favorite source of social media @SydneyMaler or http://www.facebook.com/MsSydneyMaler http://www.modelmayhem.com/2564763 http://twitter.com/#!/SydneyMaler You can also email me at SydneyaMaler@gmail. com for bookings.

GLAMOUR PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOT PORNOGRAPHY! IN 2013 PARTS OF SOCIETY IS STILL LIVING IN THE STONE AGE! HOW EXACTLY DOES THIS IGNORANCE OF OTHERS AFFECT YOU AS A WORKING GLAMOUR MODEL TODAY? READ ON!

THE IGNORANCE IN MODERN TIMES

In 2013 a great majority of society is still living with the stone age mentality. There seems to have been zero evolution when it comes to the perceptions people may have about the glamour industry with the adult industry. You would think that in 2013, people would be educated enough to understand that there actually is a BIG difference between commercial glamour and pornography! Symptoms of ignorance and stupidity? Of course, what else could it be? For anyone classifying a model wearing lingerie on a photograph as ‘‘PORN’’ should reconsider their IQ level. I mean, if that is Porn than I suppose every Victoria’s secret ad campaign contains porn as well right? Wild hair styles, deep contrasty makeup, flirtacious facial expressions...Yes, that MUST definitely be porn...NOT!

INABILITY OF INDIVIDUALS TO DIFFERENTIATE

Unfortunately there is a large sector of the world’s population who do not seem to have the common sense to differentiate both genres. In our current times, this is quite troubling. The prejudice that glamour models receive on a daily basis from shallow and uneducated individuals is unfair. In most cases, these are the same people working in an office 9 to 5 who are subscribed to the Playboy channel!

DEFINITION OF PORNOGRAPHY

‘‘Pornography (often abbreviated as “porn” or “porno” in informal usage) is the explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual gratification. Pornography involves the depiction of acts in a sensational manner, with the entire focus on the physical act, so as to arouse quick intense reactions.’’ - WIKIPEDIA Now this sounds more like what you and your wife or girlfriend would be doing on a Saturday night, right?

DEFINITION OF GLAMOUR IN PHOTOGRAPHY ‘‘Glamour photography is a genre of photography whereby

the subjects, usually female, are portrayed in a romantic or sensual alluring way. The subjects may be fully clothed or semi-nude, but glamour photography stops short of deliberately arousing the viewer and being pornographic photography. Glamour is generally a composed image of a subject in a still position. The subjects of glamour photography are often professional models, and the photographs are normally intended for commercial use, including mass-produced calendars, pinups and for men’s magazines.’’ - WIKIPEDIA

RE-EDUCATING THE SHEEP

Realistically there needs to be a reeducation phase for those who mistakenly consider everything that is swimsuit and lingerie as porn. The definitions are above. Please memorize them if you must, but do not make the judgmental mistake of placing everything in the same boat.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET TAGGED AS A PORN ‘‘ANYTHING’’ WHEN YOU ARE NOT

As a model this is where it hurts. When someone mistakenly assumes you are into the adult entertainment just because your modeling photos are racy, this behavior ultimately affects the way your market yourself. In some cases a model will fear to pursue her modeling career in fear of having to deal with irrelevant backlash. Why should a female teacher be fired from her teaching job just because she does some bikini modeling on the side? This type of conclusion happens because these people are ignorant have a hard time seeing the difference. The difference is there. You just have to use both sides of your brain to grasp it! As a model, what I recommend is to specifically keep marketing yourself as a ‘‘Commercial Glamour Model’’. Use that title everywhere, because that is what you are! Eventually society will come out of stone age to respect the work that is involved in such modeling. Beauty is one thing but discipline, traveling from one location to the next, working out, are only a few elements necessary for a model to remain in shape and productive in front of a camera. The sad part in all of this that we are in 2013 and this topic still needs to be brought back to surface every now and then. You can say religion and beliefs are also a motivating reason behind individuals making harsh judgments without proper differentiation. The bottom line is, don’t let this type of mistake stop you from modeling. Just brand yourself in a more commercial way. Keep reminding the ignorant that you are not an adult entertainer but a model, similar to any Lingerie model shooting for a product catalog. Just more sexier!

Dee Dwyer is an exotic Australian-Maltese Glamour Model that was raised in Sydney. She has since moved to the gorgeous Gold Coast, which she calls home. ‘‘ I love the bliss beaches and waking up to the water, it’s the perfect way to start the day. I am 25 years young and live every day to the fullest. I really try and keep a happy healthy balance in my life and surround myself with similar minded fun business professionals. I tour a lot for my work both interstate and internationally, my next trip is Europe and America for networking mid year. I love meeting people from all over the world and always take in everything I learn from each individual. Every person you meet in life always has some sort of beautiful story.’’

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH GLAMOUR MODELING? The first shoot I ever did was when I was 18 and it really all just fell into my lap from that day on. I have always been quite comfortable in my skin and love being in front of a camera, more so to create art; I am a very creative person. I have focused a lot on networking to gain more success around the globe and to build a professional, clean name within the industry. As much as I have fun while I work, I take my career seriously. WHO INSPIRED YOU IN BECOMING A GLAMOUR MODEL INSTEAD OF A FASHION MODEL? I absolutely love The Victoria’s Secret Models. They inspire me so much and it’s not just there glamorous bodies, but more so there elegance and beautiful aura they have as they work. They seem to have pure attitudes and really let other woman know it’s ok to show off your skin and feel confident. Miranda Kerr is by far my favourite of course being Australian. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO MAINTAIN SUCH AN INCREDIBLY SEXY BODY? Hmmm a lot to be honest. I always try and stay photoshoot ready all year round, I have my nails and hair professionally done and keep my skin all over tanned and smooth. I love spa baths and giving myself little facials at home to keep me skin vibrant. My favourite exercise to do is pilates and yoga, then I just try to keep a clean diet but I do slip up quite a bit. Again you can’t let it run your life, you need a balance. WHAT PART OF THAT SEXY BODY ARE YOU THE MOST PROUD OF? I must say I appreciate being gifted with a good bum and a nice set of breasts.

TELL US ONE UNIQUE THING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW. Well a lot of people think I am very confident but deep down I am quite a shy bashful person. If I am around someone I look up to a lot or am attracted to I can really trip over my words and be quite clumsy. But I am working on that. WHAT IS THE MOST ADVENTUROUS THING YOU HAVE DONE? I would have to say going on the Waitomo Caves in New Zealand. That really pushed my boundaries and gave my strength to take on more in life. WHERE CAN WE FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOU? My facebook page is the definitely updated the most regularly. www.facebook.com/ausdeedwyer. You can also follow me on Instagram @deedwyer1988. CHANTEL, HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH GLAMOUR MODELING? I started off doing runway as a teen in Arizona and I just never grew any taller but the exposure led me to many many photo shoots and I realized that glamour modeling is what fit me the best. I’m super comfortable with my body and don’t like to wear a lot of clothes at home either.

WHO INSPIRED YOU IN BECOMING A GLAMOUR MODEL? I’m latina so of course i have always idolized J-LO because she broke the mold on what a beautiful woman can be and she is not defined by one career she is always evolving as a dancer producer actor clothing lines etc. And I can definitely relate to her curves! HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO MAINTAIN SUCH AN INCREDIBLY SEXY BODY? I never deny myself anything if I’m craving tacos or ice cream I have it. Everything is ok in moderation as long as you keep up with your cardio every week. WHAT PART OF THAT SEXY BODY ARE YOU THE MOST PROUD OF? I’m not going to lie I love my legs! ‘ MY KIND OF MAN IS FUNNY, SMART, DRIVEN, MOTIVATED WITH GOALS AND TAKES GOOD CARE OF HIMSELF. I LIKE A GUY THAT IS INTO FITNESS AND HEALTH BUT STILL KNOWS HOW TO HAVE A GOOD TIME AND PARTY EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. PERSONALITY IS HUGE FOR ME AND I ALSO NEED A GUY THAT CAN REALLY MAKE ME LAUGH OR ELSE I GET BORED VERY EASILY.

HEATHER, HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH GLAMOUR MODELING? I always wanted to do it so one day set up my first photo shoot and signed with my first agency. I’ve worked my ass off to get to where I am now. WHO INSPIRED YOU IN BECOMING A GLAMOUR MODEL? Bobbi Billard. She absolutely inspired me and she still inspires me with all that she does. She’s an amazing model and an amazing friend with a really big heart. I always followed her work back in the MySpace days and we somehow started linking up online and chatting with each other on a regular basis which led to our friendship. YOU HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE MOST HARD WORKING AND SUCCESSFUL MODELS OUT OF A VERY COMPETITIVE STATE OF FLORIDA, WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE SUCH SUCCESS TO? I have a drive that will not quit. I put a lot of hard work and energy into my modeling. I treat my modeling as a business because it is. I always think outside the box to land me jobs and I’m also very well-known as being reliable and responsible with my bookings. A lot of the work that I get now is just through word-of-mouth and referrals. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO GIRLS WANTING TO GET INTO THIS INDUSTRY? It is a very tough industry to get into. The best advice I can give is if it really is your dream and it’s something that you want to make happen it will happen but you have to work for it and dedicate yourself and have the drive to be able to do so. If someone turns you down whether it’s signing with an agency or just a booking don’t give up. Keep trying. I also suggest hiring a really good photographer and paying them to do your photo shoot. A lot of the problems that models have when they first start off in the industry is that they think they are too pretty to pay and they just want to do all this TFP work with crappy photographers. Social media also place a really big part in landing you the work you want. TELL US ONE UNUSUAL OR UNIQUE THING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW. I attended stunt school last year and I’m a certified stunt woman. During my time and stunt school I became skilled in jumping off buildings, lighting myself on fire, driving stunts, the air ram, rappelling, combat fighting and even a choreographed knife fight. I also did a lot of aerial work.

‘ AT FIRST GUYS ARE ATTRACTED TO MY LOOKS BUT ONCE THEY GET TO KNOW ME THEY REALIZE THAT I’M VERY INTELLECTUAL, OPINIONATED, AND EXTREMELY DRIVEN AND MOTIVATED. I’M A GO-GETTER AND I’M ALSO A REALLY FUNNY DOWN-TO-EARTH CHICK WITH A HUGE HEART. IT SETS ME APART FROM A LOT OF OTHER GIRLS.

YOU TRAVEL FREQUENTLY AS A MODEL, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PLACE YOU HAVE VISITED SO FAR AND WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT IT? Everyplace has been unique and different and I had a memorable time on each one but I think the one that stands out for me the most is Barcelona. I worked with a magazine called Sci-Fi World out there which I got the cover. It is to hit stands within the next couple of months. It was one of my more unique shoots because of the special effects makeup. They had me dressed like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator. They had my hair filled with sweat, wearing a black leather jacket with lots of cleavage and I was holding a gun. My makeup was done so it looked like my flesh was ripped open and there was metal underneath. Barcelona also has really nice restaurants an ice bar and a great club life. The people there were welcoming WHAT OTHER GOALS ARE YOU SEEKING TO ACHIEVE, BE IT IN THIS INDUSTRY OR IN ANOTHER? I was offered to get into something in the retail world but we shall see what happens, it’s still in the works. I also would like to get more involved in acting and get an acting coach for later on this year and see where I can go with that. WHERE CAN WE FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOU?
