GET IT I EDITOR LETTER

from the editor LAUREN PARIS

ah February, the month of love. I fondly recall my school days, where, on February 14, I (and most of the other girls) would have my fingers crossed hoping that one of the classroom rose deliveries throughout the day would be for me. I would then proudly parade mine around the school and on the walk home from school. “Look everyone, someone fancies me!” In my teens and 20s, it was all about dinners, flowers, cards, jewellery and romance. These days, after a decade of marriage, and little ones thrown in the mix, I’m lucky to enjoy a trip to the bathroom in peace, let alone get romantic. Like many couples, my husband and I avoid getting caught up in purchasing fancy gifts for each other and we sometimes actually wait until the day after Valentine’s Day so we can get cards or chocolates for each other at the discounted price. I know, nothing says romance like watching your pennies. We prefer to celebrate our own special anniversaries and show appreciation for each other throughout the year instead of saving it up for one day. Besides, how nice is it to receive a random bunch of flowers every once in a while, for no reason other than “just because”? For some, Valentine’s Day can be tough, or it can also be a perfect time to get your girlfriends together or to let other special people in your life know you’re thinking of them. I always take this opportunity to encourage my little ones to tell family members they love them or to simply let them know they’re special to them. My heart melts when they make heart-shaped cards, covered in glitter, to give to their grandparents and special aunties. We hope you enjoy this special LOVE edition. If you’ve got an event or special occasion coming up, we’ve got tips from those in the know this issue. If you want to spice up things in the bedroom, you’re definitely going to want to check out our fab articles, and if you’re still on that health kick (well done for sticking at it), check out our chat with upand-coming social media star Shanon from The Plus Size Parkrunner who is seriously making people snort with her funny social media updates as she shares her fitness journey. GET TO THE POINT

The victims of Valentine’s Day February 14 can be tricky to navigate says Get it contributor Anna Davies alentine’s Day is painful. If you are single, it’s like a plague of fornicating locusts have descended upon all your favourite cafes, bars and restaurants. If you are in a relationship, it’s an unnecessarily expensive and overcrowded date night. But do you want to know the real victims of this holiday? The new couples – the ones who like each other, but not that much yet. It’s a day devoted to love, but what about if you haven’t said the L word yet? What about if you only just started dating? If this sounds like you, here are some things to try and avoid on V Day. GREETINGS CARDS On any other day buying a card so you can express your romantic feelings would be strange and obtuse, but for some reason

on February 14 it’s the only acceptable way to go about it. Like everything else on Valentine’s Day you will struggle to find a card that doesn’t feature the L word at least five times. If you don’t want to scare away your new flame, why not design your own card with a touching greeting such as “I could possibly see a future with you but it’s too early to tell." It may not be romantic, but at least it’s accurate. PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION Everywhere you go on Valentine’s Day will be swarmed with couples that for some reason think it’s okay to spoon in public. You might feel pressured to join in on the public touchy feely, but if you haven’t even held hands in public yet how on earth are you expected to compete with the masses? The best way to avoid this distress is to feign an infectious skin disease; it’s not sexy, but neither is cuddling in front of 20 other people.

LOVE HAS A PRICE, APPARENTLY It’s hard to get through Valentine’s Day without finding out the exact monetary value your other half is willing to invest in your relationship. For new couples the issue of the bill can be awkward enough on a regular date, but on Valentine’s Day there’s a 98 per cent chance someone will interrupt you to try and sell your boyfriend a rose for $50 – it’s extortionate madness that on any other day would be unacceptable. However, it’s not any ordinary day and this rose now represents the dollar value he is willing to invest in you. The stakes are high and no one can win. If he buys the rose it’s too much, but if he doesn’t it’s too little. Of course, all of these problems can be solved with an open and healthy line of communication. But let’s be candid, you’ve only been dating for a few weeks and he thinks your tan is real; honesty is something you need to work on.

GET IT I GENERAL STORY

Bringing In the poetic words of Justin Timberlake, “I’m bringing sexy back.” It seems everyone wants it, craves it, and yearns for it, yet there are so many do’s and do not’s and not enough feeling and knowing what is right for you and your lover. In fact, most people have no idea about what they actually want! BE REAL – GET REAL CONNECTION There are many ways you can really connect with your lover, so check out the following tips, try a few and think about what resonates with you and your partner. Intuition People often do what they think is right, expected, or what they are told when it comes to sex. Factors such as culture, gender, age and peers all play a part in what you think is the right thing to do to get sexual gratification and meaningful sexual relationships. Try listening to your intuition. If you think you may enjoy something – try it. Test the waters so to speak. Don’t worry so much about what is right or wrong. Likewise, intuition can tell you when you are not comfortable with something – if it feels wrong, don’t do it. Togetherness Great sex is only really great if both parties are satisfied. While it’s okay to ensure you are satisfied, making sure your partner is happy is also an aphrodisiac. Know yourself It’s really important to know what pushes your buttons or not during sex. It’s all about finding out what hits your spot. Leave a little room for trying what you have not yet tried because unless you have tried February 2017

sexy back

Sex without intimacy, love and connection is just a waste of your time and energy, says Patty-Ann Waho something you won’t really know if it’s for you or not. Encouragement Tap into courage to try new things and explore within your comfort zone and more importantly – have the courage to say what you will not do. STATE YOUR DESIRES When we engage in sexual activity that is not rewarding either physically or emotionally, there is usually a negative emotional response which follows. Explore and be creative Avoid being bored with repetition and routine. Attraction Ensure you are with someone you are physically, intellectually and energetically attracted to and not just making do. Time Put aside quality time and privacy to enjoy sex with your lover. OPEN CONVERSATION LEADS TO BLISSFUL LOVE-MAKING Most of us don’t talk enough about sex. Ironically though, if you are in a relationship, it’s always a good idea (where possible) to discuss sexual relations. If possible, talk about this article with 10

your partner because great sex starts with communication. Find out what your partner would like to try and what they know they like – and let them know the same about you. Before you discuss matters of the heart, consider the following guidelines to ensure you create a safe and open space for communication. Judgment free zone: no right, no wrong and nothing to prove. Be open to sexual talk: share one new thing you’d like to experience or try in the bedroom. Remember sex should be fun; using love-making games or reading books can get you to start expressing yourself freely. Voice: Don’t be afraid to speak out. How can your partner know what you want if you are too shy to let them know? Speaking out also means talking during sexual intercourse. Great sensual words make for great sex. Use intonation (the way you sound when you speak), seductive words and test the waters for what your partner likes to hear. Perfecting the Art of Love-Making: l Connecting to self enables you to connect to your lover l Breathing in unison techniques l Be present, get grounded and always be yourself Patty-Ann Waho is an intimacy and sensuality specialist who assists and guides people to ‘get real’ about their relationships and mindset regarding intimacy. innersparksystems.com

GET IT I ROMANCE

Single on Valentine's Day?

All the single ladies Valentine’s Day no longer belongs just to the loved-up couples. This month, Hayley Bogaard discovers how to make the most of the holiday as a single lady

t’s February. You notice a sense of joy in the air. Couples holding hands, men shopping for jewellery, the greeting card stand at Woolworths is covered in red hearts and cupids…oh crap, it’s Valentine’s Day. As tradition goes, this Valentine’s Day the newly coupled-up lovers will shower each other with over-priced roses, over-priced champagne and over-priced greeting cards (notice a theme here?) and the long-term couples will make a vague attempt at a romantic gesture (stale box of chocolates, anyone?) and as single ladies we will be left to fend for ourselves. But Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a pity-party for one. This year, it is time for the single ladies to take back the holiday and celebrate what we love: our friends, our lives and ourselves. Here are some ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day as the strong, independent single women that you are – Beyoncé would be so proud! Host a ‘Secret Cupid’ with the girls We don’t need a man to buy us cheap roses and chocolates – we’ve got our girlfriends for that. Rally the girls and host a ‘Secret Cupid’ – much like a Secret Santa but with more lingerie and champagne. Get the girls together, draw names from a hat and then buy a little love gift for whoever’s name you draw. On Valentine’s Day, get all dolled up, have a party and exchange the gifts. For bonus points, drink a whole lot of champagne and drunkenly compare horror stories of your exes. February 2017

Treat yourself This holiday is all about love; and who better to shower in love than yourself? If the budget permits, take yourself to the spa for the day or get your nails done. If the purse strings are a little tighter, cook your favourite dinner, relax on the couch with a glass of wine and pat yourself on the back for being a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need a man to open the sauce jar. Go on a date… with your girlfriends Who said you need a man to go on a date? Grab your best girlfriend (or two, or three) and take each other on a date. Hit your favourite restaurant for dinner and cocktails, go and see that chick flick you’ve been meaning to see or, even better, hit up the local karaoke bar after a few glasses of wine – nothing fixes Valentine’s blues like belting out ‘I will survive’ by Gloria Gaynor with your best girlfriends by your side. Netflix and chill You know the best thing about being single on Valentine’s Day? You can do whatever you damn well please – even if that means staying in with Netflix, a tub of Ben and Jerry’s and your doona. Forget spending hours dressing up for dinner with a man – the pizza delivery boy brings dinner to your front door and doesn’t mind that you’re in your PJ’s. Now, that is true love! 12

WE ASKED AND YOU TOLD. Here are some of your most cringe-worthy first date stories! “I went out for drinks with a man that I knew had previously been on a few dates with my sister, but things hadn’t worked out so I thought it would be fine. I casually mentioned who my sister was and he immediately started asking me about her, what she was up to, who she was dating. If that wasn’t bad enough, he then started quizzing me about her ‘hot’ blonde friend. There was no second date.” “I met Mark* at a networking event and we went on a few coffee dates but there was no chemistry so I told him that I was taking some time to ‘focus on my career’. A week later, I went out on a date with another guy, who got so drunk I had to get him an Uber to take him home. The Uber arrives and I open the door to help this guy in and who is the Uber driver? Mark…” “We had reservations at my favourite restaurant, which can be hard to get into, so I was quite excited. He picked me up and when we arrived, he realised that he’d forgotten to wear shoes and didn’t have any in the car. By the time we went back to his place to pick up shoes, we’d missed our reservation and couldn’t get a table anywhere else. I went home and drank wine for dinner instead.”

Profile of an online dater: the do’s and don’ts Get it’s Hayley Bogaard has spent hours swiping and matching, in order to bring you the top do’s and don’ts of creating your ideal online dating profile. t’s Friday night and you’re home alone. Again. The bottle of wine in front of you is half empty and you decide that now is the perfect time to sign up for online dating. You’re being brave, putting yourself out there and trying something new – right? Websites and apps such as Tinder, RSVP and eHarmony are virtual bars, where singles come to meet. And much like picking out your dress, shoes and matching accessories for a night at your

— do’s —

Do write facts, not fiction This is a simple one: don’t lie. If your idea of fitness is fitting a whole slice of pizza in your mouth, then don’t list the gym as one of your hobbies. The truth will come out eventually, and you’ll be left red-faced, with no choice but to turn back to the pizza. Do use recent – and appropriate – photos Firstly, use photos from within the last 12 months. Sure, that photo from Bali six years ago might look great, but you don’t want future dates being a little confused when you show up a little less tanned and a few kilos heavier. Oh and those drunk, table top photos from the work Christmas party make you look pathetic, not fun…just don’t. Do check your spelling and grammar Spelling and grammatical mistakes are a major turn off, so make sure you reread and fix any errors before you post. Seriously, using the wrong your/you’re is just not sexy. Do be positive, relatable and fun Show off your sense of humour by sharing a funny, quirky story or include a funny one-liner. These can serve as great icebreakers too! Bonus tip: if anyone asks you how much a polar bear weighs, it’s enough to break the ice… 13

local bar, you need to be careful and considered when putting together your online dating profile. So before you start typing that your hobbies include walking on the beach or drinking wine in front of a fire (yawn!) or you start uploading that photo of you dancing on the table at last year’s Christmas party (you’re a lot of fun, right?), have a read of these do’s and don’ts and make sure your profile stands out for all the right reasons!

— don’ts —

Don’t be another fitness fanatic Oh you’re into fitness – you and 2 million other people. If you’re going to mention fitness on your profile, be a bit more specific: maybe you’re training for the next Gold Coast marathon or you have a love for stand up paddle boarding. Don’t use a lot of group shots If I have to spend 10 minutes scrutinising each of your photos to determine which one is you, I’m either going to just swipe left and move on or I’m going to mistake you for your better looking friend and that’s just awkward for both of us… Don’t be too brief It’s true: size does matter. Make sure you include enough information in your bio to make it interesting. You don’t need to write a novel but just enough to entice other users to swipe right. And for the love of cupid, do not just use emoji’s in your bio. What on earth does smiley face, love heart, winkey face even mean?! Don’t bring your baggage to the table This is not the forum to complain about your love life, take a swipe at your ex or just be negative in general. You wouldn’t introduce yourself to someone at a bar with a story about your husband leaving you for Jenny, the receptionist with the fake boobs, so forget about it online too! February 2017

GET IT I SELF HELP

Plan the ultimate event or special occasion Whether you’re whisking your loved one away for a romantic picture perfect picnic, getting the girls together for an ‘anti-Valentine’s Day’, planning a baby shower or holding a 70th, Get it editor Lauren Paris has chatted to those in the know to find out the latest event styling DIY inspo for your special gathering hen it comes to event styling, 2016 was all about floor tables and relaxed settings with lots of throws and pillows. “I'm seeing that continuing into 2017 which is fine by me. The more relaxed an event, the better,” says Sian Ponman, stylist and owner at Covet + Gather. Sian has worked in the field for four years, amassing tens of thousands of social media followers in the process. “It all came about after I styled my own wedding, and then had requests from other brides to style theirs. In the last year I've moved away from events, and I now style photo shoots for brands and companies.” Some of Sian’s favourite venues include Boomerang Farm, The Grove - Byron Bay, Deux Belettes near Alstonville and her own abode. Her tips for planning a DIY event include keeping it simple and always remembering comfort. “While it is very important that it looks amazing, it's even more important that your guests feel comfortable and welcome. There's nothing worse than an uninviting event where guests feel they can't relax. And don't be afraid to serve what's considered ugly/not fancy food. It really is the best kind,” Sian says. “As for smaller scale events like baby showers and backyard parties, try and make the canvas as blank as possible. Clear out any stored items/eyesores that you have lying around. It's much easier to create a February 2017

beautiful space if you have a plain wall or garden/greenery as a backdrop.” While Sian isn’t a fan of baby showers, “I find them to be the most tedious, boring event a woman has to endure (I may be getting a bit dramatic here)," she says if you do decide to throw one, avoid arranging chairs in a large circle so everyone's facing each other. “I see this a lot. It's so awkward! And please limit the typical baby shower games. Instead, focus on making your guests comfortable and well fed.” Rebecca Evans and Heather Cook run event styling and hire business The Perfection Project. Heather, a dressmaker by trade, and Rebecca, a makeup artist who has previously worked in merchandising for more than 10 years, started their business in July 2015. “For those who are time poor and lack storage space, hiring is a great and cost effective option,” Rebecca says. “We are finding the big trend at the moment is the casual boho look. It is reminiscent of the 60's, 70's and 80's. Also hippy, Moroccan, and green with lots of hits of bright, happy colours”. According to Rebecca, it really is a time where anything goes and rules are out the door. “Mismatched but textural and tonal. Gold is also hugely popular again. We still have the classic crystal and bling but with 16

statement pieces like oversized chandeliers. No more boring satin bows on chair covers and runners with sprinkles. We seem to be getting past all of that.” Rebecca says it’s important to create the WOW factor by picking out a focal point. “Invest your time and resources into it, whether it’s a vintage lounge, a peacock chair, or a green wall. Make it the star and build everything around it,” she says. STYLING TRENDS FOR 2017 4 Greenery is as popular as ever, which I'm very fond of too. Flowers are being swapped for lush foliage, and I see that trend continuing also. 4 Rustic wood and white together is an amazing combination, which I'm seeing a lot of. It's so simple, but creates such a modern, yet welcoming and relaxed environment. 4 All things boho (that word has kind of lost all meaning for me at the moment, as it's being attached to such a broad range of things). But yes, bohemian style events are huge at the moment, and will continue to be in 2017. 4 As far as styling goes [for weddings], if you stay away from gerberas, frangipanis, those 'love' signs, monochrome candy bars and satin seat covers, you should be fine. 4 And just remember, to try and incorporate your personality into styling your event. Be original, have fun with it, and incorporate what makes you feel good. - Sian Ponman

Domestic violence the male and female victims

In part two of our domestic violence series, Get it editor Lauren Paris shares the experiences of both male and female domestic violence victims, and chats to a professional who works hard to assist those impacted

Male perspective “She would have these fits of rage. You could see this dark mood come up,” says Gold Coast resident Tom, 61, who was a victim of domestic violence – at the hands of an ex-partner – for more than a decade. “I was powerfully built at the time, but never retaliated against her”. After putting up with physical and emotional abuse for more than a decade, Tom’s worst fears were confirmed when he returned from a business trip to find his home vacant after his partner had left him for another man. Tom, who is now an outspoken advocate against domestic violence, says the stigma – or lack of representation for male victims – does cause male victims to feel disenfranchised. “I didn’t have as much evidence – yes I had busted lips and knees to the groin – but it’s not as evident and accepted in society that it does happen to males. I went to look for brochures and counselling but found everything was targeted to female victims,”Tom says. “Some may find it odd that I stayed that long in the relationship. The fear of abandonment I had is the same reason most women might stay in dreadful situations. My mother died when I was young, my father and other family members tried to commit suicide. So I probably had a sense of abandonment that goes on to affect people throughout their life. Staying in that relationship was a false sense of loyalty,”Tom says. While Tom is now happily married, he says his experience with domestic violence has impacted his life. February 2017

Female perspective A female who Get it liaised with through official service providers, on the condition that her name wasn’t published, said she experienced domestic violence for most of her 15 year marriage. The woman, from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background, said her experiences included physical assault, financial control, threats, emotional abuse, abuse towards the children, stalking and cyber-crime. “The last straw for me was the child abuse and when I found out from my son what had happened, I knew that I had to get out quickly,” she said. “Domestic violence has affected our family beyond words. I felt isolated with no money, no support and my family was overseas. "I was fearful, I was very scared of him. My children were scared of him. Once I learnt that I was in a domestic violence relationship I called for help and was placed in refuge who helped me with cyber issues, money issues, schooling, emotional wellbeing, court and legal matters. “I went through court and it was an awful experience for me, even though at the end of it I did have some justice. My children have been traumatised by the domestic violence and still require support”. The woman says she is now renting a home and works part time and that her children are settling into their new lives and schools. Her message for others in similar circumstances:“Don’t be scared because there is a lot of help out there. Look outside and talk to someone”. 18

THE PROFESSIONAL Marnie Went, Co-ordinator, Ozcare says Majella House has supported 167 women and children over the last two years. “Our service offers safe, secure accommodation with intensive support to women and their children. We help our families rebuild their lives and that is different for everyone. We offer practical support and intensive emotional support to mums and children. That might include assistance with Centrelink, child care, getting children back into school, immigration, legal matters, and dependency issues to name a few. We also assist our families to find safe, affordable housing in their chosen area,” Marnie says. What should domestic violence victims do to escape their situation? “Firstly they need to know that what they are experiencing is domestic violence and that it is not okay. The first step is to contact DV Connect for support and guidance. This way woman can get some advice and assistance with a plan to leave should that be required. We also encourage women to report incidents to the Police. We have excellent domestic violence services on the Gold Coast, no woman should be living in fear of their life,” Marnie says. “Our service supports women and children only. We know that this is a gendered issue, however we do know that there are male victims of domestic violence. Men who experience domestic violence can phone the Men’s Hotline or Men’s Rights Association and contact the Police. Violence should not be tolerated whether it be a male or female”.

GET IT I MAKE UP

Loving it bold

Over the past decade it has been all about playing up one feature and placing huge emphasis on that - and that alone. Now, it’s time to get ready for the shift, says hairstylist and make-up artist Amanda Higl s we have become more comfortable with a bolder red lip and we are the avid supporter of the smokey eye, it is time for the two to work in complete harmony. There are various options, from a subtler bold to the more intense for the adventurous. If you are not sure if it is your thing, opt for softer brown tones for the eyes and a softer tone of red on the lips. As many of you know there is a red for everyone, so go for the correct tone that suits your skin. QUICK GUIDE: Light/fair skin: corals, blue based, cherry and warm brick reds Medium skin: orange, cherry or cranberry reds

Dark skin: deep warm reds, raspberry and blue based reds When it comes to your eyes the options are endless. You can experiment with soft versions of smokey to the blackest of smokey. The result is completely determined by how game you are feeling on the day. For

more of a day time look, the softer browns are stunning with a lashing of bronze. For night time, go dark, and add eyeliner and lashes for the boldest of statements. This look is a lot of fun and is finally not off limits! So go ahead and experiment for your next event or bold day time statement. amandahiglhairandmakeup.com.au

hen I first experienced hair extensions many years ago, I was disappointed with the way the extension market presented itself. The hair looked and felt unnatural, and the bonds were unsightly and uncomfortable. On removal the extensions created damage. So we set out to establish a superior system of applying, cutting and styling hair extensions. BENEFITS OF HAIR EXTENSIONS? Time poor: How long are you willing to wait for long thick hair? A gentle system will work without damaging the hair and will not tangle or matt. Superior extensions can be coloured and cut to make it look and feel like your own hair. Need length: Human hair grows 1cm a month. Naturally long hair could take up to five years to grow. Extensions can mean 70cm length in two hours. Fine hair: Not everyone was born with fabulously thick hair and hair extensions can create the thickness and volume you have always wanted. Short hair: Don’t regret cutting off your locks. Extensions mean you don’t have wait five years to get the length back. Unruly curly hair: Extensions allow your own hair to mimic the extension hair, which helps to tame unruly hair. Damaged hair: They help to restore length and vitality. Fringes: You can grow out a fringe in minutes.

New life for your locks Breathe new life into your locks and feel like a new person After plastic surgery: I have replaced hair length and thickness around the hairline including the fringe area after people have had facelift surgery to give back confidence and restore self-esteem. Colour mix: Try different colours with splices, weaves or natural highlights of extensions. They give amazing true colour. The benefits of extensions go far beyond aesthetics. We know every guest’s needs are different, which is why a consultation is an essential part of the hair extension process.

Style and substance ow!” has been the most commonly used term said by visitors to the newly opened Tribal Style Gallery in Southport. The high-end lounge, dining, occasional furniture and decor provider, is based on internationally renowned and established brands including Pacific Green – for which it is the exclusive Queensland supplier – and Convict handbags. Tribal Style Gallery also provides custom furniture items to architectural and commercial design and showcases the work of three incredible artists it now also manages. The gallery has been the talk of the town since opening. “The reception from our Gold Coast clients has been great,” says Tribal Style Gallery co-owner Donna Harris. “Our customers are predominantly looking for outstanding quality and value, and of course unique style. We believe the Coast is primed and ready for the next stylish trend. They’re ready for something different. Modern style is lovely, but the character expressed by the Pacific Green pieces is beyond words”. Donna and husband Tom Harris have a strong building, construction and design background and are deeply passionate about their new venture.

“The artists under our management, and on display at the gallery, include Michael Harris – who, among other awards, received gold and silver awards in the Epson International PANO Competition; Deb Barry whose work is captivating as she works entirely in felt tip and each piece takes hundreds of hours to complete; and portrait artist Damian Smith who works in all mediums, including finger painting. He has an oil on canvas work that references Jessica Alba and an acrylic on canvas referencing Delta Goodrem, to name but a few. Other works contain 24ct gold leaf highlights,” Donna says. “We have exclusive pieces, originals and limited edition collector’s pieces. There are some lovely investment pieces on offer”. Tribal Style Gallery also offers vertical gardens and rainforest creations for commercial and residential use. "The BelAqua Vertical Gardens are fully self contained and the water reservoirs only need topping up every couple of weeks." Donna says. Visitors can take in the high-quality furniture craftsmanship that includes some construction techniques over 4000 year old."

25

"There's an amazing array of leathers, hides and bronze finishes that compliment our gorgeous Palmwood," Donna says. Hand-cast Egyptian bronze highlights feature on a lot of the furniture and the leather on offer is full-grain Italian leather, with one single lounge chair weighing 90kg according to Donna. “We will be holding regular free wine and cheese evenings for our clients, so keep in touch,” Donna says. How’s your gut health? Having just got over the silly season many of us have probably eaten and drunk more than what is sensible. We should give a thought to our hard working digestive system and appreciate all it does for us. here has been a recent surge of information on the awareness of the role our digestive tract has on the health of our mind and body. In fact, we absolutely cannot be healthy unless our gut is. We evolved from primitive beings that used only its “gut instincts” to survive and hence our intuitive feelings have a powerful effect on our mental well-being and our immune function.

because this gut-brain communication is so powerful some scientists are now referring to the gut as the second brain. Our immune system is our body’s main protector. Controlling inflammation, infections and repairing tissue damage. At least 70 per cent of this is located in the walls of the gut and continuously interacts with the good and bad organisms living in

An important fact about the gut that you may not know is that we make approximately 75 per cent of our brain’s happy chemicals there. Our intestine, from our mouth to our anus, is like a tube of the outside world going through us. From it we extract the nutrients we need to survive and function and where we excrete much of our body’s waste. An important fact about the gut that you may not know is that we make approximately 75 per cent of our brain’s happy chemicals there. When the gut is not functioning properly it plays a huge role in contributing to mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. In fact

our intestines and the food we eat. Fascinatingly, we have 10 times more organisms living in our gut than we have cells in our body. So we are actually more foreign bacterial organisms than we are human. These organisms constantly communicate with our immune system and play a huge role in how inflamed our bodies are. Inflammation plays a role in all chronic diseases such as arthritis, depression, irritable bowel syndrome and also cancer. For good health we need to keep inflammation as low as possible. Healthy

bacteria help reduce inflammation and bad organisms such as candida, parasites and pathogenic bacteria increase it. One of the most powerful things we can do to improve our overall health is to increase the numbers of good organisms in our gut. Good organisms in our gut are depleted by stress, antibiotics, contraceptive pills, and, highly processed low fibre starchy foods such as sugar and white bread. The most effective way of increasing the good organisms are to add fermented foods to your diet such as kefir, sauerkraut and fermented super foods. These are more powerful than lab made probiotic supplements as the fermented foods come with their own biofilm that adheres to the walls of our intestines and allows the healthy bacteria to set up home and continue to live there. One of the most powerful ways to reboot the gut and give it a spring clean is to combine low calorie days or fasting with the simultaneous intake of fermented foods. There are preprepared fermented food detox programs now available that quickly rebalance the healthy bacteria in the gut very efficiently. Wishing you all the best for 2017. Medsan.com.au

Men, women and weight loss Jeff Osborne, owner of Vision Personal Training in Bundall discusses the difference between men and women when it comes to weight loss. ost people think that when it comes to weight loss all they need to do is burn more calories than they consume and the laws of energy will kick in. While there is some element of fact to this it is discounting a major factor in how much you store and how much you burn. One of the major determinants of how much you store, and where you store it, are your hormones. Let’s look at burning first. If you are like me and you use an Apple Watch, a Fitbit or other fitness tracker, the margin for error when tested was 10 per cent out for the best ones and up to 23 per cent out for the rest. That was just for a 300 calorie workout. That would multiply out over a whole day or week to be out by hundreds of calories (or thousands of kilojoules). Other factors that affect how much you burn are genes (a single variation in the FTO gene can cause you to burn 670 less kilojoules each day), Epigenetics also can affect things by 5 per cent (that is what your mother was eating while you were in the womb), sleep deprivation can influence burning up to 20 per cent (even as little as one night) and for women during a menstrual cycle it’s not unusual for calorie burning to vary by up to 400 kilojoules a day. So if all you are doing is counting calories you are dealing with an error that could be 20 per cent out either side. Now let’s look at storing. What you read on the food label is probably (99.9 per cent chance) wrong and for most items, the numbers being used were measured in 1887. Food labels are just an average. Take, for example, a cup of carrots. They can be on the low end 37 calories and, on the high end, 61 calories, but average 50 calories. Much depends on how and where the carrot was grown. Then take sweet potato for example, it can range from 231 calories to 705 calories. That is a big difference. It would be impossible to count every bit of food for calories and then sell it, so averages are the best we have. But that's just ingestion, and then there is absorption. Not all of what we eat gets absorbed, some of it gets excreted. Ten per cent of the calories in food won’t get used by you. Fibre and protein will affect this a lot. As will the state of your gut lining. The other variable that is still being researched is the bacteria in your gut can cause you to absorb up to 630 kilojoules more. On top of it all, unless you actually weigh everything, your skills at eyeballing portions are unlikely to be spot on, and believe it or not, most people underestimate the actual size of a portion two thirds of the time. So when it comes to losing weight, for the most part, counting calories is not only incredibly imprecise but it will most often end in failure. And the unfortunate fact is that most often it is more difficult for women than men. In addition to the reasons already mentioned, there is also oestrogen and testosterone to consider. Both affect burning and February 2017

storage rates. And then there is cortisol which will have an effect on how your body uses insulin. I know it seems like you are doomed. But there is hope. What it takes is a good plan - that doesn't involve calorie counting - that gets you moving, lifting weights and eating the right foods at the right time in the right quantities. This February, make the decision to do it right! You will be glad you did! Visit www.j.mp/bundalltimetable to see when our next seminar is on and come and learn how to lose fat and keep it off. I did a few Parkruns here and there, working around my son’s schedule. In 2017, my goal is to do a Parkrun every weekend,” Shanon says. Shanon’s blog page kicked off at the end of December 2016. “When I started my blog I thought if a few of my friends got on it and supported my page I would be happy with just that. I never in a million years would have thought this would have taken off like it has.” Now with more than 3400 followers, Shanon says “People like someone who makes fun of

themselves, who is open, honest and raw. What you see if what you get”. With posts such as: “My new work uniforms arrived, I had ordered them MONTHS ago with visions of me [losing] weight, well that didn't happen, I basically look like the Hulk with a camel toe”, how can you not love her? One of her most popular posts features a photo of Shanon wearing an ill-fitting Kardashian dress that she is determined to fit into by the end of the year. “The dress. So I have had this dress for years, I saw one of the Kardashians wearing it - I think their name started with a K?" "If it's good enough for them it's good enough for me." I bought an XXL thinking,‘yeah I will fit into that’. No matter how much I tuck it, fold it and roll it; I cannot origami myself into this dress. Turns out it's a XXL for toddlers. I want to fit into this dress by the end of 2017. On the 1st of each month I will take a picture of myself in it and upload it. I must warn you last time I tried it on the unzipped part on the side looked like she was 10 dilated and ready to push.” Other corkers include her tribute to Poise pads in a post-Parkrun update on her page: “I managed to do my thing in 39.48 minutes! I ran/shuffled the whole way and my run/

shuffle is slower than others power walks. I did my thing in 28 degree heat & 5808648% humidity. And thanks to my BYO spill kit (Poise pad) I averted a possible bush fire. All praise the power of the Poise, Amen”. “I have had so many messages from people letting me know I have inspired them to join Parkrun, or go for a run or even a walk. Everyone is wishing me well with my journey, they are looking forward to that final run of the year where I will wear the dreaded dress,” Shanon says. She’s also not shy when it comes to calling out active wear designers and brands about the sizing and availability of garments. “What I would love to see is these fitness wear companies realise that they need to meet the requirements of all shapes and sizes. There is nothing more disheartening than walking into a shop with the idea in your head of ‘I’m going to get a new outfit today’ and have nothing fit you in the store. Just because I am a bigger person doesn’t mean I don’t exercise. I do! And I want to look nice doing it,” she says. Fellow Gold Coast runners should keep an eye out for Shanon as she plans to visit more often. “I love Main Beach, it’s a beautiful area. It even has its own Parkrun which I will be making a few appearances at this year.”

Keeping up in the classroom Could your child have a Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)? It’s one of the most common classroom hearing pathologies. ommon signs of a potential CAPD in children includes: l difficulties following instructions l poor listening ability in noisy places l difficulty with learning at school, l being distracted or easily fatigued at school. Central auditory processing refers to the efficiency and effectiveness with which our brains and auditory areas decode and use the information we hear. It’s essentially how well the ear talks to the brain and how well the brain can understand what it’s being told. When our brain and auditory system works normally we can pick out the important parts of the sounds we hear, filter out any noise, and fill in any gaps to make sense of what we have just heard. This complex process uses a wide range of skills to help us make sense of the sounds we hear. Skills like locating the buzz of our alarm clock in the morning, focusing on a conversation in a busy café, and clearly understanding a teacher in a noisy classroom. When something goes wrong in our brain and auditory system, the ability for us to make sense of sounds can become impaired, even though we can still ‘hear’ the

sounds. A disorder of the brain’s auditory system most commonly results in difficulty understanding speech in the presence of noise, and could be the result of a CAPD. It’s often difficult to identify the causes of CAPD. Everyone’s brain auditory system organisation is different which means CAPD can affect everyone differently. Conditions, like chronic ear infections in children’s early years, could also mean they are at a greater risk of developing a CAPD. Children with CAPD are more likely to have behavioural, emotional, and social difficulties. Problems communicating and learning difficulties can impact the development of self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. While these signs may be noticed early on, it isn’t until children are 7 years of age that we can accurately diagnose a potential CAPD. The first step in testing for an auditory processing disorder is to conduct a hearing test. This is to establish whether the presence of a hearing loss may be a contributing factor. After determining the child’s hearing thresholds we then test more complex auditory processing skills. For children, we offer a screening test of your child’s spatial hearing abilities that mimic a classroom situation. Once we have the result of this test

we can then investigate your child’s auditory processing abilities and identify any potential presence of CAPD. While there is no single ‘cure’ for CAPD, there are several remediation strategies for children which can be discussed with your audiologist. These may include: l listening strategies for the classroom l active communication techniques for daily life l listening exercises or computer software programs to improve auditory processing skills; and l assistive listening devices such as Bluetooth microphones. Early identification and remediation of CAPD may potentially lessen the likelihood that any secondary problems may emerge. If you are concerned, schedule a consultation with your audiologist now to rule out or identify the nature of the problems. P: 1300 252 7489 clarityhearingsolutions.com.au

GET IT I ROMANCE

How to spice

up your relationship

It may not always be rainbows and butterflies, so Get it has the low-down from a Gold Coast guru on all things love, relationships and intimacy

hether you’ve been with your other half for three, 13 or 30 years, it is important to continually carve out ways to keep love alive. The alternative? Monotony. And that can kill, says Nathalie Biviano, who helps married mothers reconnect again with their husbands (nathaliebiviano.com). So how do we up the spice in our relationship? According to Nathalie, spice is relative. “Chilli Kettle Chips is enough to roast me. Whereas for others, they may think it’s as spicy as Corn Flakes. Essentially, the degree of spice doesn’t matter. What matters is you are making an effort. As world leading love expert Dr John Gottman says, "Every positive thing you do in your relationship is foreplay.” Here are Nathalie’s top five ideas which may add a little, or a lot of spice, depending where your spice-o-meter sits: Lock in Date Night Block it out as a non-negotiable. Sounds so serious, doesn’t it? Well, it is.Treat it so.You schedule coffee and cocktails with girlfriends (weeks or months in advance), why should he be any different? Hot tip: Sync your online calendar accounts. That way, you both know it’s coming up and can take turns to decide what you will do. February 2017

Book a class/show/reservation.This increases the commitment level to the date. Minimum date night frequency: once a month.

“I will never forget the butterflies you gave me on our wedding day"

Get a dramatic hair cut

Make his head turn. If cutting is not an option, then go for a dramatic colour. A new hairdo can bring about intense levels of new energy, and this, is a great thing for a relationship in a monotonous cycle. And of course, don’t forget what this does for you on a self-love and selfconfidence level. Win-win.

“Meet me tonight. 8pm. Our bedroom."

Send an appreciation text

If things have felt disconnected for some time for you, sending a text message is an effective way to break the cycle, and to reignite spark. Examples include: “Read an article today that made me smile. It reminded me of <insert what he did, no matter how small or big>. Thinking of you. Miss you". Short and sweet. No action required on his end. The goal is not to get a 'ditto' reply, but rather, just a genuine intention to let them know you're thinking of them. Alternatively, send a flirty text. Trust me, they will appreciate it. Some examples, courtesy of Marriage 365, include: 40

“I miss you. Come home.”

Quit saying “Mum" or “Dad"

Too often, we mirror our kids and call our spouses “mum" or “dad". When you’re hearing “mum" 4698 times a day... and then your husband calls you “mum" (by sheer habit)... it’s a complete intimacy killer. Ask your spouse to call you what you’d like him to call you. From Baby to Bella, to Darling and Honey, you will notice it’s music to your ears compared to be being called “mum”. And don’t forget your part. Eliminate calling him “dad”. Use the word “hero” wherever you can. Example:“I love what a great dad you are. Thank you for being my hero”.

Have a six-second appreciation kiss, every day

When you leave for your day and autopilot-predictable-peck is en route, change it up. Get in close. Make solid eye contact. Have a good long kiss. For at least six seconds. And if you have young kids, make sure you do this in front of them. It may or may not gross them out, but at the very least you are setting a great example for them on what a healthy and passionate relationship should be all about.

GET IT I LAST WORD

Online dating kills me “Honestly, it’s a love-hate relationship. When I get on it, I love it for about a week and then it starts to do my head in … and I have had some awful experiences”, writes Elizabeth Campbell.

ow don’t get me wrong, I have also had some really fun dates and good times, but the terrible ones are better to write about, right?! So let’s go with that! I’ve come to realise I am really not very good at online dating. For a writer and someone very social (I LOVE social media!), I never know what to write and then I seem to offend people easily. I know, I know, I can’t believe it either. I’ve been in trouble for not replying to a man within a fair amount of time … it had been 10 minutes and I was doing my makeup and cleaning my teeth. Seriously, WTF? Delete. One guy declared his love and a marriage proposal after only a few messages (not even dates) and when I didn’t reciprocate the feelings he told me I was leading him on. God, I only asked him what he did for a living and what he liked to get up to. Delete. Another one, after the very first encounter, went in for a pash at the top of the escalators in a shopping centre in peak hour. Totes awkward. Delete. But the icing on the cake was … let’s call him TB (Tinder Boy). TB was highly offended by something I wrote and absolutely berated me and then found me on social media and ripped complete shreds off me.

Geez. Block. Ban. Delete. He looked up “Brisbane, Elizabeth, writer” on Google and I came up on the first page. Ordinarily, I’d be pretty chuffed … every business owner wants to be in page 1 of Google! But not when you’ve got a weirdo on the hunt to let you have it. I didn’t even mean to offend him. I was actually trying to be funny. Epic fail! The sensitive little being he was. I’m a writer and I know words (to set the scene), so this is how the story goes… We’d exchanged a few messages and then out of the blue TB sent me a photo of an ice cream and used the word “woolly” to describe it – and some other long words I had to look up that didn’t describe ice cream at all. Now, I don’t know if “ice cream and woolly” are some bizarre code words for something sexual, but if they were, I didn’t get it, but if you hadn’t noticed … there are two standout weird things about this story already: 1. He sent me a random picture of an ice cream. Weird. 2. He called it woolly. It’s actually me who should have been offended … No one talks about ice cream like that! It’s not a mammoth; it’s a sacred food that’s been the crutch to help me and women all over the world through some of our own “mammoth” situations and some very dark and emotional times. Ladies, I know you’ll agree.

So I said something about consulting a thesaurus or dictionary (details are sketchy but it was funny. Really funny. Like ROFLMAO … in my head). And that’s when he let loose. “How dare you insinuate that I’m not intelligent…blah blah blah.” Then he deleted me. Wait, what? I’m not funny? Huh? Ah, so I am totally not funny. Note to self, never use that line again. I was shocked actually. God, what a baby and, um, if you call ice cream “woolly” then maybe your intelligence should be questioned just a little bit. Anyway, I thought nothing else of it and got some beauty sleep. Then I wake up to a message on Facebook that could rival a best-selling book. So dramatic, long and full of massive words … again. This was on my business page, so I profusely apologised to TB in the hope it would end there…Of course, he thanked me for seeing the error of my ways. Seriously, what is with people? PS – TB, I didn’t mean that apology. Sucker. So I get back on to online dating about two years later and you will never believe who pops up … the same guy! How do I know … because he has very unusual spelling of his name, and… no woman would forget a man who disrespects ice cream!

One guy declared his love and a marriage proposal after only a few messages and when I didn’t reciprocate the feelings he told me I was leading him on. February 2017
