thE 2011 football season for the Georgian national team started on February 9 and finished November 11. The Georgian team beat the Armenian 2:1 in the starting friendly match in cyprus and defeated Moldovans 2:0 in the friendly home match. there was another friendly match with Poland and Georgia lost it 0:1. However, the main for Georgia matches were held within the qualifying round of Euro-2012. the Georgian national team coached by temur Ketsbaya started 2011 season optimistically after the last year’s nine-month long unbeaten record. on March 21, Georgia played home match with the croatian team considered as a favorite of the group.

Georgian midfielder Levan Kobiashvili scored the single victorious for Georgia goal on the 90th minute of this match. Ketsbaya admitted frankly that the game was very difficult and Georgia might not deserve a victory. ”However, we do not feel inconvenience by this. the main issue is that we have scored the desired three points. We have the result, which some might only dream. Diligence always brings result. our devoted play made us winner of this match. Fairly, croatian team is stronger but i have always felt that we would stand a chance,” Ketsbaya said. on March 29, Georgia lost 0:1the match against israel in tel-Aviv. Ben Khaimi scored the single goal on the 59th minute. the Georgian team lost the first match after having an unbeaten record of ten matches and conceded to Israel the third place in the fixture list. then Georgian team lost 1:2 the away match with croatia in Split on June 3. Jaba Kankava scored the first goal on 17th minute, but the goals scored by Mario Manjukich and Nicola Kalinich on 76th and 78th minutes brought victory to croatia. Defeat is always disappointing, but we are aware that away game with israel to say nothing on croatia, are extremely difficult. The unexpected and incomprehensible for us was what had happened afterwards. Georgia lost successively three home matches in the qualifiers. After allowing goal 0:1on the 64th minute in the home match against latvia the Georgian team had an enough time to end the match in a draw at least. However, the team failed to cope with this task.

Being left without any motivation the Georgian national team could not win the away match against the group’s outsider Malta. the Georgians (Jaba Kankava 15th minute) scored the first goal in this match that was played on September 6. However,

the Georgians received a return goal in ten minutes from Michael Mafsudi and the match was ended in a draw. on october 11, the last qualifying match in tbilisi was against the Greeks. Georgia took the lead 1:0 thanks to David targamadze’s goal scored on the 18th minute. the Greeks scored two consecutive goals (Fotakis 79 and Kharisteas 86) in the second half and took very important three points from tbilisi. the Greece team scored total 24 points and became the group winner while the Georgian national team lowered to the fourth place with 10 points.
