aCadeMiC exCellenCe The University of Georgia enjoys a long and rich tradition of academic achievement among its athletic programs. According to figures released by the NCAA, Georgia has produced more combined scholar-athletes than any Southern college or university. Recent graduation rates released by the NCAA show that Georgia’s student-athletes generally meet or exceed that of the university population at UGA. Throughout the years, the Athletic Association’s academic staff has developed programs to address all aspects of a studentathlete’s college experience, including academic achievement, personal development and career planning/placement. Solomon Hughes serves as the primary academic counselor for the swimmers and divers. The primary emphasis of the Student Services staff is to assist UGA student-athletes in achieving their personal goals by ensuring that they earn a degree, by providing opportunities for personal growth and by offering guidance in making career and employment decisions. The response to the career planning service has been especially positive. Southeastern employers seek student-athletes as employees because of good work habits acquired through athletics and their ability to manage time wisely. Georgia’s swimmers and divers also have access to the Zell B. Miller Learning Center, located at the heart of the UGA campus. It is a facility like no other on an American campus, housing both classroom space and library space in such close proximity. The Zell B. Miller Learning Center’s architecture reflects the academic tradition of UGA, while on the inside is a technological space that represents the future of American higher education. Within its walls lie two dozen classrooms capable of seating 2,400

students and equipped with the very best technology of teaching, from computer connections to projection equipment to laptop connections. The building serves as an expansion of library services, with a completely electronic library, 96 study rooms, the reading room, 500 computer workstations, 2,000 computer connections, fully wired study carrels, a wireless environment and a coffee shop.

Georgia swimmer Lisa Caprioglio earned the 2009 Joel Eaves Scholar-Athlete Award as the female student-athlete entering her senior year with the highest grade point average in the athletic program.
