Progeny Testing – a cost effective solution Progeny testing is a key ingredient in finding cost effective breeding solutions and today with the assistance of genomics, you can have even greater confidence in the results that progeny testing can deliver. Genomic technology allows us to more accurately identify the best candidates for progeny testing. The end result is a genetically tighter group of superior young bulls which leads to more productive, long lasting and profitable daughters.

We have recently undergone a process of reviewing our Breeding Goal and have added greater emphasis on mastitis resistance. Our breeding focus at Genetics Australia now combines Mastitis Resistance with our long standing breeding goal of Profit, Type and Fertility. While they are regarded as the most important traits in our selection process, careful attention is still paid to workabilities, management traits and even individual type traits to ensure that our young sires produce the trouble free cows that dairy farmers demand today and will require in the future. Diversity of pedigree is also paramount when putting a progeny test team together and Team 2014 provides an unparalleled range of bloodlines from Australia and abroad. Not only do you have access to sons of the world’s best proven sires, you also have a number of sons from exciting genomic sires. Genomics has also allowed us to branch out into new cow families that have been untapped until now.

Genetics Australia’s Horizon progeny test program continues to be Australia’s most successful when it comes to identifying the best bulls in the breed. This can only be done through the commitment and co-operation of our many progeny test participants. We value your contribution and look forward to your continuing support. If you are new to progeny testing we warmly invite you to be part of Australia’s leading progeny test program – the Genetics Australia Horizon Progeny Test Program. It is an exciting time to be involved in progeny testing! Peter Thurn Breeding Programs Manager Genetics Australia

A number of the Holstein and Jersey bulls in this team will be released as FutureGen Genomic sires. These bulls will be randomly allocated first to progeny test participants. This is our commitment to progeny test participants! Once fully allocated they will be available through our FutureGen Team.
