determined to give it a try. “If there was a chance I could prove this treatment was effective then maybe I could save another woman’s life,” she said. She first learned of the Miracle League several years ago when she was asked to serve on the Board in Westchester. “After the first minute of seeing what the Miracle League did for these kids I fell in love. I had to bring it to Long Island,” she said. Kristine is determined to open five new fields in five years across the Island. Critical to the ongoing success of the Miracle League are “buddies,” volunteers who help the kids have a successful game. Buddies assist players at bat, walk the bases or simply cheer them on. They create a judgmentfree zone and a fun, team environment. Every week someone from the community joins the game. The fire department will come and play ball with the kids, or the St. John’s University baseball team, or they’ll host a carnival. This year the season starts May 5. Perhaps you or someone you know has a child with disabilities, or you want to do something special for wonderful kids. Volunteer as a buddy, bring your team at work to a game or ask your community leaders to participate. It’s a great place to be on a Saturday. Registration for the Miracle League is April 21 at Sports Authority 2110 Nesconset Highway, Stony Brook 11790 http://mllongisland.com/. april 2012
