WARNING SIGNS by Hillary Call Self-injurers come from all walks of life and economic brackets. The incidence of self-injury is about the same as that of eating disorders and, similarly, is highly stigmatized. Few talk about it and those who selfinjure are adept at hiding scars, burns and bruises. The typical age of onset is between ages 14-16. Those who practice self-injury use it as an unhealthy coping mechanism, to distract themselves from depression, anxiety, guilt, loss, etc. Sometimes people cut in order to “feel a feeling” or re-engage with reality, since cutters are known to have a history of dissociation. Also, self-injury releases endorphins into the bloodstream making it dangerously addictive. The danger is that a person may accidentally injure him- or herself fatally because they develop a tolerance as they self-injure repeatedly. Sufferers find they have to hurt themselves more intensely (cutting deeper, for example) and more often to get that same level of relief. The longer the underlying issue goes unaddressed, the more at-risk the person becomes for suicide. Therapy has proven to be very effective in treating people who self-injure. Methods include substituting harm for intense sensations that can safely mimic the pain of self-injury: snapping a rubber band on your wrist, hard; holding an ice cube on the area that you want to harm or sprinting until you’re out of breath.
