A new Vale do Anhangabaú São Paulo is experiencing great and exciting change. The city is the economic engine of Brazil and is in a process of investing in revitalizing São Paulo’s Central area. This will enable a blossoming the city’s most prevalent, but under-utilized public assets – its streets and spaces. This project for Vale do Anhangabaú is a concept design describing how the main square of the city can become the main meeting place for all citizens. Downtown São Paulo as a destination The people of São Paulo have every right to be proud of their city. The historic center of São Paulo, the Downtown area, has great potential as a sustainable and people-centered urban environment. This potential however may not be fully realized unless the Downtown area is actively used by a large crosssection of the population and for a full range of citylife functions - residence, work, recreation, culture, participation, sociability. In an age of mobility, business and commerce have become more free to locate themselves anywhere they find attractive - and where the customers are. A well connected network of great public spaces
will not only improve the public realm in Downtown São Paulo but will also attract more people and thereby support a rebuilding of the speciality retail and entertainment destinations - making the Downtown area more livable. This will support the overall development of the city both economically, environmentally, culturally and socially.

An open dialogue process GATHERING KNOWLEDGE AND INPUT
An important element in the process of developing a new concept design for Vale do Anhangabaú has been to have an open dialogue between architects, planners, technicians from different sectors and representatives from the civil society in order to include all availabe knowledge and to create ownership of the final project. The input from this process has been summed up as consensus points that have guided the development of the concept design. An inclusive process

PUBLIC SPACE EVALUATION
During the project period which have spanned the period from April to November 2013 the project team has facilitated three open dialogue processes for architects, planners, technicians from different sectors of administration and maintenance and representatives from the civil society.
At the third open dialogue session in September a smaller project group was invited to give very specific input and guidance to the preliminary concepts for the project design in order for the project team to develop the project further.

For Vale do Anhangabaú this first workshop pointed to the need to develop: SOFTWARE: improve accessibility, introduce playful events and temporary interventions and HARDWARE: spaces to rest/ sit/ stay/ be, (re-) introduce water, make human scale lighting and bicycle lanes.

At the second open dialogue in August many of the same people participated in the workshop on what a new concept for Vale do Anhangabú should include in order to create an inclusive and safe square for all citizens. The main consensus points from the workshop were to include: free wi-fi, street trees, kiosks, mobile furniture, high quality lighting in human scale and water features.

Vale do Anhangabaú is centrally located in the city center and has a large number of potential users nearby. These factors hold great potential for the square to become living and vibrant part of the city.

Various public transport nodes are situated near Vale do Anhangabaú, making it is easy get come to and from the square. At the end of each travel people become pedestrians and the pedestrian environment has to be inviting all the way from the pedestrian zones to the stations and busstops.
São Paulo downtown has a built out pedestrian network close to the square. The pedestrian streets are very busy. By ensuring better connections between Vale do Anhangabaú and the pedestrian network in both city centers, more people are invited to use the square during their daily routines as well as for leisure.
Brazil and São Paulo has a great design tradition within architecture and landscape architecture. In the the 80’s the brazilian landscape architects Jorge Wilheim, Jamil J. Kfouri and Rosa Grena Kliass made a new design for Vale do Anhangabaú which made the square unique and attractive for many years. Unfortunately it has become worn down.

Even though some businesses and high profile shops have moved out of the downtown ares, there are many destinations nearby Vale do Anhangabaú that attract people daily: culture, education, work, public service and shopping. Many of these functions can be invited to use and interact with the square, and people going to and from can be invited to spend time in the area.

A lot of people are living and studying in the downtown area. This is a great potential for city life. The students use the city actively during the day for meetings, social activities, shopping and café visits. Residents often hold a great ownership to their neighbourhood and use the local facilities. The presence of residents in downtown offers a safer environment at night.
The highway that runs through and under Vale do Anhangabaú between the two city centers is a large barrier for pedestrians going east-west. Vale do Anhangabaú is situated in a central location for the pedestrians crossing the valley - this is a great potential for city life - if these pedestrians are invited to stay at the square.

Physical factord like problematic wayfinding, lack of seating and barriers created by stairs, are some of the main factors as to why Vale do Anhangabaú, despite its central location, failes to attractive more city life.

Vale do Anhangabaú holds a very central location in the city centre, but is difficult to find due to lack of pedestrian connections directly from the nearby public transport.
The highway running throught the Vale do Anhangabaú and under the square affects the sensory environment in a negative way - pollution, dust and noise creates an unattractive environment for city life - especially in the ends of the square.
The buildings framing the square has very few functions interacting with or supporting city life. Especially at night the facades are closed and unattractive - enhancing the feeling of an unsafe environment.

Today Vale do Anhangabaú lack benches or seating opportunities of good quality. People primarily sit on secondary seats like bollards, edges or stairs. A better seating environment will invite more users to stay longer at the square.
Because Vale do Anhangabaú is situated in a valley, the entrance points are sloping and in most places facilitated by stairs. In the middle of the main pedestrian flow at Avenida São João, a former café and landscape element has become a hole with no function and thereby barrier to the desired pedestrian lines through Vale do Anhangabaú.
A lack of variation in users and few functions to use and visit leaves the square with relatively few daily users. The presence of many people make people feel safe - help is nearby. Few people or domination of a single usergroup often create a feeling of unsafety. This is a negative spiral - few people makes fewer people come - where people are more people will come...

The Heart of São Paulo A NEW VISION FOR THE CITY CENTER
Anhangabaú Square is situated in the very center of São Paulo. The square has a great history of being a river valley connecting the two historical city centers and has a great potential of becoming the main meeting place in the city: It has a big scale that can facilitate mayor city celebrations and events and it has a central location that brings many daily users to or across or nearby the square.

Seating INVITATIONS TO REST IN MANY WAYS
Invitations to sit down are essential for a successful public space. A high quality public space can be measured by how much time people spend - good spaces we want to be in for a long time. Seating opportunities are provided in great numbers to cater for a large number of people to spend time resting in this wonderful environment. Seating opportunities are found in serviced spaces like restaurants and outdoor serving areas as well as in areas that are public. There is a clear commitment to strengthen the public character of the destination and to ensure that it becomes lively throughout the day. Seating is placed to provide a range of different experiences and interesting views and each seating type is chosen to add functionality and character to the area where it is placed.
TALKSCAPES AND INDIVIDUAL CHOICES
MOVEABLE CHAIRS AND COMMERCIAL SEATING
In general people like to sit where other people are present, but also like keep some social distance. A nice seating location is where the view and micro-climate is pleasant, it feels safe and seats are comfortable. A variety of seating options will respond to specific user preferences and help facilitatate different social situations. Groups and individuals will be able to choose seating options that suits their personal preferences.
Moveable chairs provide more flexibility than fixed seating, as they can be positioned according to individual needs and preferences; to face the sun, enjoy the shade or take advantage of the view. The moveable chairs are lightweight, outdoor models designed to nest within each other. Like trolleys used in supermarkets and airports the chairs are equipped with coinoperated locking mechanisms that encourage users to return the chairs after use and link them together to an fixed base.
In order to provide an attractive seating environment at Vale do Anhangabaú all these factors need to be met. The square will offer many different seating possibilites in form of both talkscapes and individual seating arrangements.
Commercial seating will be placed in relation to nearby cafés and partially under the shade of trees. To ensure high visual quality the commercial seating should look similar, but be distinguishable from the moveable chairs; The café owners have to be able to recognize their chairs in order to lock them in at night and the public needs to recognize the public coin chairs in order to be able to return them to collect the coins.
In total 3670 seats will be provided.

Curved benches unfolds in circles and curves. The profiles gradually form themselves and back rests appear creating varied seating options. The curved bench is thought as a steel frame with curved wooden boards.

Seating opportunity along the columns of the bridge allows people to become spectators for events, light art and activities happening under the bridge. Build up by steel frame and wood boards and can be dismantled when large events and stages need the space.
