“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

“you can build over the top with full functionality” Did you hear the sound? WOOSH!! That was spring and summer flying by all of us. Here it is November already and before you know it the Big Guy in the red suit will be visiting all the good Gearheads. For most of us around the USA who experience old man winter with cold temps and piles of snow, we tend to head into our garages and shops to tinker and work on our prize rides or the latest project we have going on. Yea those of us in the colder climes’ know those of you in California, Arizona, Florida and along the Gulf Coast don’t ever stop doing shows and cruises because the weather is in your favor. There’s another thing that happens during the late fall and winter months, that lets us gearheads continue to have hot rodding fun. The indoor ROD & CUSTOM shows. They are held all over the country, and most are close enough to most everyone to take one in. DO IT!

The ISCA is the organization that brings the rules and judging sheets to make things as fair as possible for all the competitors. I know some gearheads say they don’t see the point of these show or cars, but the fact is, a lot of the cars on display, are our friends and local hot rodders. And as far as the wild, over the top cars in the multi dollar displays, deep down you have to admit that we like checking them out.

Are these over the top cars and trucks something everyone of us would build…no. Do we steal an idea from them for our projects and cars…yes. An interesting trend is taking place with some of the entries in the indoor shows. I call it “building it real”. By this I mean the cars are drivable, and more than a few over the past few years have done what Gray Baskerville of HOT ROD Magazine would call the “cross country chingo”. They have proved that you can build over the top with full functionality. I credit this trend to the revised judging at the GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER Show. About 3 years ago, the would be contenders not only got judged when the vehicle was set up in the display and in “show position”, but they also went thru a judging when they pulled into the show to check in. The same judges that would judge them in the show, look the vehicle over for how it looks in “street” position. Things like stance, attitude, wheel and tire combo all are evaluated. Another thing that is looked at is…could you drive it down the road. Think this isn’t having an impact on the builders out there…wrong. This year GOODGUYS hosted a long distance drive from Northern California to the Texas GOODGUYS show. A lot of the cars were some of the big trophy winners at this years shows. Take the RIDLER winner fro this year Detroit show. CHECKERED PAST the 1940 Ford Coupe that won all the marbles drove….DROVE all the way. One last thing, when you go to the show, take a kid with you. We need more hot rodders. Oh yea…enjoy the show.

SPEED CHANNEL SELLOUT? I was wondering how many Rodders noticed that the buyout by FOX 1 has done away with My Classic Car, Truck U and other automotive offerings. Now I have to buy another package on Cable in order to get Spike! Donnie Morris via the Internet Donnie I would have to agree with you on this one. FOX 1 sure left a lot of gearhead out to dry on this whole deal. Some of this is controlled by the Cable & Satellite Companies too. - Editor

As some of you readers know, for a number of years, almost 8 to be exact, I was coowner of HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service Hot Rod Shop, as well doing the deal here at the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE. Some of you have contacted me with questions about getting work done, or the HR&T website and Facebook page. Since I left HOT RODS & THREADS this past August, I no longer take care of all that stuff. Give HR&T a call at 615-368-3000 with those questions or comments, and they will help you out.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS CAR BEFORE? Jimmy B I don't know if you can help me but I sure would appreciate your time to try. I purchased a 1932 Chevy sedan in Feb. from Old Town Automobiles in Huntingtown MD. The previous owner was Michael Belcher from Columbia TN. I have contacted Mrs. Belcher to see if she could tell me anything about the car, All she knows is that he had the Chevy when she met him in 1999. Maybe he might have been a member of the local Hot Rob club in Columbia TN and maybe you can put me in touch with someone who might know a little something about this Chevy. I have pictures that I could forward with an e-mail address. Thank you for your time. Vernon Lewis via the Internet Vernon I personally can’t help you on this car, but maybe one of our readers in the Middle Tennessee area can. If you know anything about this 1932 Chevy, contact Vernon at vlewis@greenwoodcpw.com

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Editor’s Note: Ed takes us on a trip into the world of the Show Car Circuit and the ISCA this month.

International Show Car Association and me……..Boy do I have some stories to tell about the ISCA. By producing car shows in Nashville it would seem that it would just be a matter of time when I would get into the ISCA show deal either with my own on shows or showing cars. Well it didn’t quite work out like that. My actual deal ended up in selling Mequire’s Polish & later my own brand of show polish under the name of Superfinish. I sold both products throughout central U.S. for several years & it wasn’t long before I starting to give assistance to Mike and Chris Britt showing their 1969 Camaro. We won several ISCA Best Custom awards that resulted in accepting the challenge of a divisional win possibly even the Grand Championship in the 1979-80 season. Mike & Chris was offered Max Hall’s truck & trailer and © several helped with a killer bar room scene for a display. After we read the rule book we discovered we needed a lot more than a good looking ride to win at this game. What was needed was a display that carried a theme & showed the details of the car. We had our job cut out for us!

“LO-BLO” Camaro @ Louisville

The car was a great show car with the 671 supercharged engine with tons of chrome and the body had a chopped top. Two good ingredients for top points with the judges. What was needed was a display that carried the theme of the car and tie in a display. It was a natural name Lo-Blo, for the chopped top and supercharged engine. Now what about a display? Somebody came up with a bar room theme that everybody started thinking of the ways to tie it in. It wasn’t long before the bar had a sign on the front. The fan over the car had lettered blades. Inverted letters on the fuel tank with a mirror reflecting the image correctly. We even had swinging bar room doors and a wood floor for the whole 20x20 display. The display was so big we assembled it in the second floor attic of an abandoned recreation center. Things Woodard Historical Collection were starting to come together.

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. The ISCA Show Schedule was another factor. Best part was the fact that we had planned to run the circuit, that is showing every week at a different show. As for what shows & where we had Max Hall directing our schedule to accumulate the maximum number of points to win. He was a genius. We all learned a lot for our first year out. By the time the first ISCA Show Stopper magazine cameWoodard out wePhoto hadCollection a good lead but several cars were within striking distance. At that time ISCA had several shows that were required to be in the total points count to be eligible for the running so where you showed was important. We were fortunate that our numbers were right so all we had to do was keep the truck n trailer on the road and make the shows. About midseason someone noticed there were several competitors having to work to get perfect 1A shows & we needed to be in 2 shows the same weekend to keep them from overtaking us. I suggested a blocker but nobody could sacrifice a show to make that work. I came up with the idea to get Ernie Johnson’s Aces Up street bike that won the big Daytona Bike show out & run it as a blocker. We needed a good cleanup plus a little paint touchup and we were ready. We even had the old display for the bike. I loaded it up in my Ford van & was off showing. From Jan 1 to about Mid March I was able to win Best of Show 8 times along with having a perfect 1A show at © Woodard Collection Roanoke VA, the only one I had. The best blocker deal I had was when Bill England was making a move to catch the Camaro points at Lake Charles LA. Including a long distance award traveling from Atlanta. I was one step ahead of him as I set it up to show at Rochester NY and travel to Lake Charles LA to beat him for long distance, denying him of that perfect show.

The best tale of that show year concerns the now famous “Philadelphia Fight” story. It is rather long but I think you will be amused at the results. It all started as I was detailing Aces Up before the show opened on a Friday afternoon. All the media was there shooting video for the evening news, when an announcer started a conversation about why there were so many people wearing cowboy hats. I guess he noticed mine because it was a leftover from an order that Charlie Daniels had ordered from a hat shop in Mt Juliet, where Charlie lives. I told the announcer that a large number of us had shown in the mid-west this year & purchased the cowboy hats. I told him that car shows were probably the only place you would find someone wearing cowboy hats Woodard and snickers. He was amused & ask me to Photo Collection repeat that on the air, which I did! I know, I know tell us about the fight deal! © Woodard Collection

That was too much as she took a swing at the policeman & that ended that as they carried all of them to the slammer & told us they would hold them until daylight & suggested we get out of town. © Woodard Collection

Black Gold at Houston

Well it was getting late on the Sunday and the awards were about to be handed out & of course we all wanted to see how we faired. As we left the area where our displays were we forgot that big cowboy hat in a chair by the display & you know what happened, don’t you? Yep 4 or 5 youngsters picked it up and took it out of the show then returned to finish looking at the cars, but a friend of ours spotted the deal & told us whereby we covered the exits with security & caught them. I filed charges & they arrested the girl that took it. I had to go to the police station with the friend that saw her take it to file the complaint. After arriving at the police station that ask me if I got the hat back would I drop the charge. I agreed, got my slightly damaged had and returned to the show and started tearing down the displays for our return trip to Nashville. Things were going normal other than a few laughs about all the action then suddenly coming through the back door came the whole group with a few of their buddies looking to start a fight. Well, that was not going to happen as we had a small arsenal at our disposal, including automatic weapons. Security was in the building so we didn’t have to do much other than raise our voices for them to respond and they did even Woodard Photo Collection with the dogs, actually some was in riot gear. Well the fight started when the girl that took my hat told the policeman that Mike Britt had threatened her with a revolver that was laying on the bar room table. Mike picked it up & handed it to the officer who laughed & said it was only plastic pistol.

Jay, Chris & Mike just before the big fight

Always excitement at an ISCA show. Mike & Chris Britt ended up winning the South east Division. I won 10th spot in the Southeast with a borrowed Honda bike and my friend Ernie Johnson won Best Bike. Not sure where the LOBlo Saloon Camero is or my borrowed bike is but Ernie’s Bike is in an art gallery in Zurick.

A Job To Kill For…….

I guess I need to explain the reason for the above title for this article as it was sparked recently by the offering of job positions in our Tech Service department at Holley. Positions dealing with consumers & dealers needing technical help for installation of our many products. It is an excellent position to assist customers all over world with installation, fit applications & recommendation of needed products. Nice cushy office environment surrounded by 10-15 people doing the same job, all answering hotrod parts questions. The best part are the trips to company open houses, national drag & circle track events, street rod events where tech members are there to answer questions & show our products. Great advancement to move to other positions within Holley here in Bowling Green. Did I mention we have an arrangement concerning going to Western Kentucky to earn a college degree with Holley paying for most of it. If you know anyone or would like to apply or might be interested in a position here at Holley connect our Human Resource Department and you might end up being the person in your group that has a job to kill for! Auto group says E15 may damage vehicles Washington —Automakers have sparred with the nation’s corn growers for more than four years over whether the nation’s nearly 240 million cars and trucks should be able to use a higher blend of ethanol. In 2009, ethanol advocates petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to allow the use of E15, which is 15 percent ethanol blended with 85 percent gasoline. Nearly all of the nation’s 180,000 gas pumps today offer E10, which is 10 percent ethanol. The EPA approved use of the E15 fuel for vehicles from the 2001 model year and newer. But labeling requirements and other battles have slowed implementation of the higher blend. Automakers, who say that E15 can damage engine components, took the fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which in June declined to hear the case. Gloria Bergquist, a spokeswoman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the trade group representing Detroit’s Big Three Automakers, Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG and others, said Monday that the industry supports renewable fuels, “but it is not in the long-term interest of the government, automakers, fuel providers or the ethanol industry itself to find out down the road that vehicle problems are occurring from rushing E15 into the national marketplace.” The government rushed to approve the fuel, she said: “EPA approved an E15 waiver before sufficient testing was completed to gauge the cumulative effects of this more corrosive fuel. Ethanol can permeate and degrade rubber, plastic, metal and other materials in vehicles not designed to handle it.” Automakers are gradually starting to certify the fuel for use in newer vehicles. Volkswagen AG has approved the fuel for all of its 2014 lineup, while General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. allow its use in newer vehicles. Chrysler Group LLC and others still don’t approve the fuel and say it could void warranties. Because of summer fuel restrictions, the estimated 40 retailers nationwide that sell E15 halted its sale during the summer months, but began selling it again in mid-September. The fuel is roughly 10 to 15 cents per gallon cheaper than E10, but delivers less energy, meaning motorists will get slightly fewer miles per gallon. The Renewable Fuels Standard requires a growing amount of corn to be refined into ethanol and blended into the fuel supply. The standard requires renewable fuels such as ethanol to be blended into gasoline in increasing amounts each year — but by total gallons, not as a percentage of fuel use. When Congress passed the law in 2007, experts forecast U.S. gasoline consumption would continue to rise, which would support correspondingly higher ethanol use. But that hasn’t happened as fuel use has remained nearly flat due to more fuel-efficient vehicles, a weaker economy and higher gas prices. Late last month, AAA, the motor club that represents 53 million drivers, urged the EPA to lower the amount of ethanol required to be blended into gasoline for 2014. AAA cited press reports that the EPA has recommended a cut in the biofuel mandate for 2014 to 15.21 billion gallons from 18.15 billion gallons. The group said more realistic targets “would protect drivers by preventing a possible surge in gas prices or the increased use of potentially damaging E15 gasoline.” The Renewable Fuels Association, a trade group representing ethanol producers, says more than 40 million miles have been driven on E15 with no known cases of engine damage, misfueling or liability claims.

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE

It really is that simple. Ask any hardcore hot rodder or custom lover what car show they are going to, at the end of February or beginning of March each year, and they are going to give you a one word response…”DEE-Troit”. When you hear the reply you either know what it means or, you don’t. The 61st Edition of one of America’s greatest cars took place with an extra special feel in the air. This was the year that the RIDLER Award turned 50! To say that the competition was stiff for the 50th RIDLER award is an understatement. Add in that a lot of the previous 49 winners of the RIDLER Award were in attendance, made the whole deal that much more special. Watch for a future story featuring all 50 RIDLER Award winners. While the RIDLER award takes front billing a lot of times, the rest of the show is top notch too. You have over 700 entries to check out so you better have comfortable walking shoes on. Hot Rods, Street Rods, Kustoms and more muscle cars that you can count, from all of the Big 3. Throw in the “Basement” and it will take you all day long to take it all in. We’re going to try to give you a feel of some of the show, but to experience the whole deal, you have to go and soak it in. If this one isn’t on your bucket list…put it on up at the top…”DEE-Troit”.

EIGHT STACK wins the 2013 New Product of the Year at the National Street Rod Association (NSRA) annual Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY! EIGHT STACK (www.eightstack.com) was recently honored at the NSRA Street Rod Nationals Plus show in Louisville, with the New Product of the Year for 2013 for their Ford Coyote Induction system. Dale Schaller, Sales & Marketing Manger for EIGHT STACK said “It was a great honor and one that has humbled us at Eight Stack. We are very proud of this award and thank all people who voted for us.” The EIGHT STACK system is available for most FORD motors. Give them a call for your application today. Story by Jimmy B / Photo by Eight Stack

While you may think it is just another WEBER Carburetor system, you couldn’t be more wrong. This is state of the art EFI, with a lot more air flow then a Weber based system. Add in hidden injectors, hidden fuel lines and hidden wiring, and you have one of the nicest looking, best performing EFI systems available today. How nice is this system you ask? Questioning how well it performs? We’re sure you have heard of GOOLSBY Customs of Bessemer Alabama. Goolsby's are one of the most talented companies in the industry and if you have seen some of their work at SEMA or at other shows your know the quality workmanship . NSRA has chosen GOOLSBY’s to build the 2014 Give Away Car. Also at the NSRA show the 2014 Give Away car was unveiled revealing the Pace Performance SB Chevy engine with the EIGHT STACK system on it. GOOLSBY’s was so impressed with the EIGHT STACK EFI and when they were contacted by GOOLSBY to be a part of the build, they did not hesitate to say yes. EIGHT STACK feels very honored that their system will be part of this prestigious build , along with many quality companies. EIGHT STACK has been developing a new LS system that is completely different from their current design and they think it will compliment their current offerings. It will be available in about 3-4 months and although final pricing has not been set, they feel that it will be around the same price as their current small block Ford and Chevy units. It will have hidden fuel injectors, fuel rails and wiring. You will only see the throttle linkage and the individual stacks and velocity stacks. This unit will broaden the appeal of the individual stack intake system to customers that want a different look than their Weber based units. They are very interested in hearing what you think about it and welcome your input.
