Don't Fear Your Camera–NEW!

This fall, four members of the GCC Science department will offer a series of hands-on, brains-engaged workshops designed for children ages 7–12 and their parent(s) or guardian(s). Don’t miss this chance to study with four of GCC’s finest and explore with them their specialty and passion in their college classrooms and labs (and even the brand new greenhouse!). Create Your Own Visual Reality with Photoshop TSW 450-5: (Location: Franklin County Tech School) W, 6:30-8:00 pm, 9/2611/7 (no class 10/31), 6 wks, $179

Instructor: Marcus McLaurin Photoshop is the industry standard software for photo and image manipulation. Learn how digital artists create those "photoshopped" images! Learn the basics of layering, masking and color manipulation at the service of creating new visual realities, and transport yourself there using stock and on site photography. Basic computer skills, but no previous experience in Photoshop required. Bring a flash drive to bring home the image you create, or a color printout can be provided.

Circulation and Sight–NEW! CSW 892-2: T, 5:30-7:00 pm, 11/6, 1 session, ($20 parent/child, $10 each additional family member)

Instructor: Jay Gump Explore how our hearts pump blood and how our eyes allow us to see. We will start with some video of the heart then look at models of the human heart. We will then explore a dissected sheep heart to illustrate the differences between models and biology. The same procedure will be followed for the eye.

Plant Reproduction–NEW! CSW 891-2: T, 5:30-7:00 pm, 11/13, 1 session, ($20 parent/child, $10 each additional family member)

Instructor: Anthony Reiber When we think of plant reproduction we often think about seeds, but this is not the only way plants reproduce. We will explore sexual and asexual reproduction for plants including seeds, bulbs, corms, rhizomes and cuttings. As an example of asexual reproduction we will take cuttings and divisions of plants.

Photovoltaic (PV) panels make electricity directly from sun energy. Working with mini-PV cells, we will measure (very low) voltage and ‘wire’ a working array. Children will learn to use a voltmeter, attach PV cells in parallel and series, and observe conditions that favor or hinder electrical production. All materials provided.

Instructor: Stephen Roy Designed for beginners interested in the basic skills of recreational golf. Students advance at their own pace. Topics include golf rules and etiquette. Students participate in field trips. This is the credit-free offering of LED 161.

Mammal Skulls–NEW! CSW 890-2: T, 5:30-7:00 pm or 6:00-7:30 pm, 10/23, ($20 parent/child, $10 each additional family member)

Instructor: Brian Adams An examination of mammal skulls reveals fascinating details about the natural history of the animal. In this hands-on workshop we will look at, touch and think about skulls from the very small (mice) to the very large (whales!) and explore what those animals eat based on their skull characteristics.
