It’s a full house for Luck/Unity golf

LUCK/UNITY GIRLS GOLF

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer LUCK – The biggest change for the Luck/Unity golf team this season is in the numbers. This will be the first year in several that they’ll have a full team competing at matches, and with at least four matches golfed already this season, the team has shown a lot of improvement. “You can see improvement,” said coach Ron Steen. “They want to learn, and they’re having fun.” Senior Avery Steen will once again lead the team this season and she’ll be eyeing a fourth consecutive trip to the state golf meet in Madison. “I hope she has a good year. I hope she shoots well and is going to have fun,” Steen said. Others include seniors Tina Lennartson and Jena Alling, who have been with the team since their freshman seasons. The team has lured at least four others from the volleyball team as well, which has helped to add more depth. Team “bests” are common now almost weekly, which is as good as it gets for any coach. The unfortunate thing about the season for Luck/Unity is that they’ll once again be playing without a conference. They

won’t have any home matches but will be playing with the Heart of the North Conference once again. While they won’t be able to earn a conference title, they and St. Croix Falls, who is also without a conference, team or individuals will still have a shot at qualifying for state as a team or individuals. Steen says that Hayward will be a team to beat this season and have state potential, while farther south in Osceola, Casey Danielson will be looking for a fourth Division 2 state championship.

ST. CROIX FALLS GIRLS GOLF

Full team highlights SCF girls golf

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer ST. CROIX FALLS – The St. Croix Falls had a down year last season due in part to only two golfers showing interest in competing. One of those girls, McKenzie Katzmark, is back again as a sophomore, and the Saints have a handful more that will help make this season a bigger success under coach Maria Gjovig, who is in her second season as head coach. “The most exciting thing for me this season is having more golfers to work with and expanding our program,” Gjovig said. Other team members include senior Samantha O’Brien and Taylor Orton as well as sophomores Lindsey Wondra, Hayley Cermin, Megan Swenson and Kamille Flandrena. “Our returning sophomore, McKenzie, will be a big strength. Not only has her game improved tremendously, she will also be an asset in teaching the other girls about the courses we will be playing. Additional strengths will be our young, energetic outlook,” Gjovig said. Still after two seasons the Saints will not be included in any conference other than their own, along with Luck/Unity’s golf

team. They won’t qualify for conference points, nor a conference title in the Heart of the North Conference, but will be playing along on the various golf courses with the Heart of the North throughout the short fall season. Gjovig, like other coaches, expect Hayward to be a solid team this season, and the Hurricanes have proved that already as many teams are in their fifth and sixth matches. Meanwhile, St. Croix Falls looks to be continuing its growth and rebuilding on what has been a strong tradition in girls golf for quite some time. “I look forward to another growing season and look forward to working with this team,” Gjovig said.
