Rock, Caper, Pissers

By Todd Curran The 23rd annual Cougar's Sports Bar Snowshoe Softball Tournament was a smash again this year, raising over $4,000 for charity during the March 27th and 28th weekend. I saw several familiar faces among the teams of marauding weirdos, who battled like titans on snow-less baseball diamonds just like the insane costumed athletes of yore. Everyone in attendance got in on the fun, the crowd noticeably in high spirits and FULL of spirits. Overhearing reveler Struan Shaw, caped in a towel with a hole cut in it, relive his streaking across the field episode, I asked what team he was on. “I wasn't on a team!” he exclaimed. Rocking out with their denim Wyld Stallyns vests, big wigs and headbands, the Dirty Diamond Dozen team rightfully acquired the Spirit of the Games Award. The Bros & Hoes emerged as Tournament Champions after cold cocking the Bipolar Bears. Getting flushed by their

competition, the Smash'd Pissers picked up the Toilet Bowl trophy for winning the fewest games. The Toilet Bowl wasn't an empty win though, as Party Pooper Awards went to the Conquistadors, Fockers and Bipolar Bears. Proceeds from the Chili Cook-off, food donated by Hirsche Fraser Meats and AG Foods, and silent auction items contributed by local people and businesses, all went to a good cause. The Children's Wish Foundation, Fetal Alcohol Society and MS Society all benefitted from the prestigious event, and Tom Baker Cancer Centre will be seeing generous donations from the Saturday night head shave. “Many thanks to all the Tournament supporters and volunteers for their time, effort and spirit,” says Cougar's owner Lori Collins. As for me, I'd like to thank genetics for producing these deranged athletes. They elevate a game of Snowshoe Softball into a spectacle of Rock, Caper, Pissers!

We suggest our anti-coagulant Bait. The Bait will control them by baiting their holes, or placing the Bait in Bait Stations. This Bait is made by a Pest Control Co. and is very effective if used properly! *Beware of retail outlets “POISON products”. Acreage owners are allowed to use anti-coagulant Bait as are Farmers & Ranchers. The Bait is safe to use around Pets & Wildlife. The "VARMITGETTER" is also available for Mole and Gopher control in larger areas, using a mixture of Oxygen/Propane that destroys Rodents and their tunnel system.

Picasso, Eat Your Art Out By Murial Dais On Saturday and Sunday, April 17th and 18th, the Sheep Creek Arts Council facilities in Turner Valley will be a hive of activity. In the main Gallery there will be a show and sale of the works of three local artists; Maryanne Jesperson and Rudi and Jacqueline Gabriel. Rudi and Jacqueline will be on hand on Saturday from 11am to 4pm to welcome guests and introduce them to Rudi's pencil drawings and the stained glass work done by Jacqueline. Rudi, born and raised in Bavaria, was trained in Graphic Arts and spent his working life in that field. Since coming to Canada, and living in Black Diamond, he has been specializing in pencil sketches and is honing his painting skills, especially with portraits. Calligraphy is another skill of Rudi's which he has shared in classes for interested students at the Arts Council. Although her paintings will be on display both

days, Maryanne Jesperson will be hosting them on Sunday from 11am until 2pm. Maryanne has been a fulltime artist for the ten years she has had her gallery, Maryanne's Eden, in Black Diamond. Her area of greatest interest is in oil painting landscapes using bold colours. She is an admirer of the “Group of Seven” and last fall spent some time in Ontario where these Canadian painters worked. She will be displaying some large pieces which she painted in the impressionist style from that trip. She will also have some small examples of the concrete garden art which she makes by hand and finishes. Maryanne is a native Albertan. On Saturday evening, from 5pm, in the Valley Neighbour's Club, there will be an Appreciation Dinner held to honour Evelyn Richmond. Evelyn has been the President of the Sheep Creek Arts Council for the last eight years, as well as a teacher of Decorative

Behind the Ball

The Valley 8 Ball Pool League wind-up banquet was held Saturday, March 27th, at the Turner Valley Legion attend by approximately 33 people. The participants dined on a delicious Roast Beef and Breaded Chicken Breast meal with salads, vege-

tables and cheesecake desert. The 1st place winning team of Richard Marshall, Kathy Maxner, Sarah Friesen, Len Peeters and Dick Toews collected a total prize of $1,250.00. There were also 2nd place to 6th place prizes ranging from $675.00 to

Arts and the Registrar for courses offered at the council through Foothills Continuing Education. Evelyn will not be continuing as President, but her expertise will continue to be drawn on in her classes. Anyone wishing to join us for the dinner should call Jackie Brassard at 403-938-2032. On Sunday, April 18th, at 2pm Bill Faulkner from Wolf Pack Studios will be showing the photographs he took last June, at the Rhubarb Festival, when Laureen Harper, the Prime Minister's wife, graciously opened our Tea. The Sheep Creek Arts Council Annual Meeting will follow, at which time the membership has an opportunity to hear the review of the year's activities and participate in the election of the officers and board of directors. A new President will be installed, as Evelyn Richmond is not letting her name stand for election again. We hope that many people, long time members of the Sheep Creek Arts council as well as newcomers will come to 133 Sunset Boulevard in Turner Valley (just west of the fourway stop) on April 17th and 18th to view the art show, meet the artists, honour Evelyn and elect a new Board of Directors.

$250.00. The Valley Pool League's regular pool season will start again in September 2010. The league players vote each year where they will play. A short (4-week) 9 ball season will be starting March 30th. Everyone is welcome to come and play each week, show up Tuesdays at the Turner Valley Legion at 7:00 pm.

Let Your Learning Soar at Longview School It was with great enthusiasm that the students and staff of Longview School celebrated the appointment of Denise Rose as Superintendent of Foothills School Division, starting September 2010. On Wednesday, March 24th, the students and staff surprised Ms. Rose with a celebration to honour her accomplishments and success. At Longview School the students and staff live the Foothills School Division's mission that each learner entrusted to our care, has unique gifts and abilities. It is our mission to find out what these are…Explore them…Develop them… Celebrate them! We wanted to make sure to celebrate Ms. Rose's dedication and commitment to the Foothills School Division Family. So celebrate we did!! The students of Longview School spent a great deal of time and took a great deal of care and attention in creating a wonderful banner that read, “Congratulations Ms. Rose”.

yIANNIS’

The banner was decorated with beautiful hand-painted roses and was signed by all the students in the school with personal messages of congratulations, good luck, welcome, good job and well wishes. Students were very excited to cheer “Congratulations!”, to surprise Ms. Rose as she walked into the gym. The students were holding the banner, as well as daffodils. The gym had a wonderful springtime feeling with all the bright yellow coloured daffodils. Ms. Rose graciously accepted their well wishes and spent time speaking with the students about her new role. Ms. Rose expressed how much she is looking forward to her new

assignment and asked for feedback from the students about what was important for her to know and do as the Superintendent. At the conclusion of the celebration, each student individually engaged Ms. Rose to say a few words of encouragement and give her a gift of a daffodil. The students felt very special to have had the opportunity to speak directly to Ms. Rose and to give her a gift. All of our students now feel they know Ms. Rose well and could approach her to talk or ask questions. Ms. Rose left Longview School with a bouquet of eighty daffodils, cards and a banner, but more importantly, with the support and encouragement of the students and staff of Longview School. 403-933-4348 Coyotes Visit our Town The Town of Black Diamond has received some calls from residents, who have spotted coyotes near the off-leash area. Signs have been posted at the gate and Alberta Fish and Wildlife has been contacted and is monitoring the situation. In the meantime, our Peace Officers would like to remind people that, while coyotes naturally frequent populated areas at this time of year without incident, it is always a good idea to be aware of them and take precautions. Residents are encouraged to keep small pets inside whenever possible to avoid confrontations with wildlife. It is also a good idea to refrain from feeding pets outside and not feed the local wildlife. If you have concerns, please contact the Fish and Wildlife Office in High River at 403-652-8330.

From The Lions Den Submitted by Lion Lona Lineham Welcome to "Spring" - I saw a robin today which is always a good sign. Maybe someone has seen one before this but I just got back from a month in Bali and this was my first robin. The Foothills Lion's Club was very busy, at our last meeting, helping the Community with numerous projects. We gave $2,500 to The 7th Annual Sheep River Trust "Golf 4 Wellness" which will be held July 22nd at the D’Arcy Ranch Golf Club in Okotoks. Over the past 6 years this Golf Tournament has raised over $500,000 in support of health care in our community, like the purchase of urgently needed medical equipment and services that enhance the care of people in our area. The Diamond Valley Community Garden is in need of more raised beds filled with soil and compost to be ready for spring

planting. The Lion's Club provided them with $4400.00 to complete this project. The Iwa Yama Karate Club have 45 members and will be hosting a tournament at the Oilfields High School on March 27th. These young students will also be participating in the Western Canadian Championships in Saskatoon on April 11th. The Lion's Club presented this Club with $1,500 to help with the expenses. Lion's are proud to continue our tradition of supporting STARS. Lions were the major contributor in getting STARS started in 1985 and we are recognized for that service by having the LIONS logo proudly displayed on each aircraft. We have donated $3,000 to "STARS Lions 7th Annual Golf Classic" to be held on June 3rd at Lynx Ridge, Calgary. This year the Lions Foundation is celebrating

the 25th anniversary of the "Purina Walk for Dog Guides". This fundraising effort raises money to support the raising and training of Dog Guides in Canada so that we can continue to provide these 5 distinct programs - help people with physical or mental disabilities, Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Special Skills Seizure Response and the newest program, Autism Assistance. The Foothill Lion's Club donated $500 to this Walk. Where are all the Bingo Players? We would certainly like to see more players out to our Bingo to make it worthwhile. The next Lions Bingo will be held on Friday, April 16th at 6:30pm at the Valley Neighbors Club.

The annual campaign has grown to include volunteers from schools, community groups, youth groups, church groups, business improvement associations, local governments, service clubs, environment and outdoor organizations. These volunteers participate in projects ranging from cleanups and fix ups in their communities to composting and recycling programs, tree planting, eco-fairs and energy conservation ventures, in an effort to restore natural habitats.

Preventing Weekend Warrior Syndrome By Dr. Natalie Carrington Well, it is finally spring, and if you are anything like the typical Canadian, you are bursting at the seams to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. Whether it is the season's first golf tournament, or a marathon gardening session, you may find yourself nursing sore muscles and joints when returning to work Monday morning. To avoid being labelled by co-workers as the “weekend warrior” you may wish to take heed of the following friendly advice: 1. WARM UP and STRETCH Treat any weekend sporting event as you would any other work out. This means warming up and stretching before you engage in a new spring activity, including gardening. Taking a few minutes here and there to stretch before, during and after your activity may help prevent you from waking up the next morning bent over like a pretzel.

I'll Take ‘Ox Cart’ For $1000, Alex We've all had these landing or chance the last 90 ing. "seemed like a good idea at the time" moments. As we get older - we have of course fewer of them which is probably how we wind up being able to actually........... get older. It was March of 1991 in Havana and I'd foolishly allowed someone other than a rational individual to book my flight to Santiago de Cuba. The initial thrill of getting a 2 hour flight for less than $30 and a bottle of Listerine was still with me as I stood on the observation deck of Fidel's domestic terminal watching vintage aircraft defy the laws of gravity and a few other assorted laws of basic aviation safety. It wasn't until I realized that some of these vintage birds belonged to the national airline I was booked on, that breakfast began to back up on me. I'd picked a bad day to trade away the mouthwash. On final approach trailing what appeared to be plumes of black soot, a Cold War era prop job seemed to be having a helluva time deciding whether to commit to the

miles of open water to Key West. Gravity won out as El Capitan, in what can best be described as a controlled crash, slammed the old Soviet built Illusion 18 on to Terra Firma and began advancing towards the terminal. As the 4 windmills on this albatross shut down, passengers could be seen disembarking and immediately putting distance between man and machine. I remember thinking "who in their right mind would willingly book a seat on THAT?" Right up until the moment the boarding call for the Santiago flight steered us in the direction of the Russian Relic. I can't even begin to explain how it feels to watch 3 pilots draw straws and see the loser squeeze into the left seat while the other 2 seem overjoyed to spend the afternoon sweeping floors at the airport. I volunteer to help but am quickly whisked down the jetway and into the bowels of the awaiting beast. Seat 20C is a tad interest-

Strands of nylon pieces intertwined with an old belt buckle substitute for a seatbelt and the seat recline resembles today's lie flat beds normally found in business class. Unfortunately 'lie flats' are not invented for another 10 years therefore the presumption that the seat is broken is somewhat accurate. As engines 1 through 4 come to life, it sounds remarkably like my old '68 Toyota moments before a couple of pistons blew through the hood. Heading toward the 13,000 ft long ribbon of concrete known as runway 24 Left, I waffle between monitoring the emergency exits and re-discovering religion and before having to choose between the two, the take off roll commences. The image of a collection of miscellaneous aircraft parts attempting to fly in loose formation fills my head as this hundred thousand pound beast slips the bonds of earth heading toward it's planned destination. The flight was of course anticlimactic and as evi-

2. PACE YOURSELF One of the most common mistakes we make with the first hint of spring is to over do it with new activities. Canoeing the Bow River all weekend is one sure way to cause sore shoulders. Instead, try to pace yourself with any new activity by limiting the time you spend performing certain repetitive manoeuvres. Be reasonable with the expectations you have of your body. 3. BE POSTURE AWARE Spending hours bent over in the garden or cycling your first mountain pass is a recipe for soreness if frequent breaks are not taken. Be aware of your posture during these new activities, trying to adjust your position frequently so as not to tire the same muscles. 4. HYDRATE YOURSELF Somehow the warmer weather tends to turn us all into camels. Drinking water frequently during warm

weather activities will help prevent dehydration – and we all know how awful that can feel… dizziness, weakness and confusion to say the least. Remember that you need to re-hydrate with at least one litre of fluids (non alcoholic) for every hour of moderate exercise. A good rule of thumb is to drink every 20 minutes during exercise. By following these four simple steps, you may prevent the injuries leading to those many painful and awkward manoeuvres so characteristic of the weekend warrior.

bringing the “good” of your community to you

GIFTS AND GRIPES G IFTS A ND G RIPES

This is your opportunity to share your views on the BEST and the WORST of YOUR Community. You’ve expressed that you love to hear from us. . . . .We’d love to hear from you! To all Millarville Racing and Agricutural Society (MRAS) Board Members: I just want to say how sorry I am that the MRAS Board felt it necessary to cancel the 2010 Fair (and future ones which is inevitable). The Fair Committee was not given a 'heads-up' or the understanding that the Board was about to cancel the Fair. Why did you not have the courage to come out to a meeting to tell the committee there was a good chance of cancelling the event??? The Board's job is to SUPPORT the various committees – NOT destroy them!! We did not see our Fair rep at any meetings – perhaps she was one who disagreed with the Board's actions and was told to stay away??? Would things have been different if she had been Fair Chairman??? It would appear this “action” had been in the planning stages for some time with direction from those who would thrive if the Fair failed. To think of those decent people who have worked relentlessly in trying to put this Fair back on its feet, all the while complying with the Board's never-ending demands and wishes and receiving no constructive support from them or the office. The number of hours dedicated by this group to salvage the Fair from certain people who want to see it fail, has been in the thousands! The members of the Executive have never stopped organizing, detailing, tabulating and meeting with each

other to have the best Fair ever! The Fair cannot be compared to the Rodeo or the Races. It is a much more complex event with a multitude of phases. Its purpose is not to “make” barrels of money so there is no beer garden or dance which are the main sources of revenue through liquor sales for the Rodeo & Races, not to mention the gambling! Good wholesome family fun??? I'm sure several of you Directors must surely recognize that many points in your “Statement” were totally unfounded and when questioned, your President could not answer or chose to ignore these questions and then proceeded to adjourn the meeting before further discussions could be dealt with or rather NOT dealt with. Businesslike? Democratic? I think not. I am most disappointed with the Board and very, very angry. As I mentioned, the Fair Executive has worked tirelessly over the last several months to finally correct the inefficiencies in the handling of the finances. The Board members have been sheltered cleverly as to what has actually gone on behind the scenes in trying to get information and proper detailing on monies in order to create a true 2010 Budget and that's been just one of the many roadblocks created intentionally to set the Fair up to fail. Over the past few years it

has been a situation of the Board vs. the Fair – well I guess the Board and the Market win after all. Congratulations!! You must feel so proud to have destroyed this 100year-old tradition in one little meeting with a few select Board members (many of whom are new to the area with no history) and with no effort on your part as a member of that board to help rectify or find a solution to the situation!!! It makes me sick!!!! You have created outrage in the community; not to mention causing division among friends, volunteers and neighbours; destroying the goodheartedness of honest country folks working diligently to put together 'their' rural agricultural FAIR! It was the largest, most successful and most respected fair in Alberta, by the way – even with no support from its Board over the years! On a personal note, we have supported the Rodeo and the Fair over the past 13 years since moving to the area; either by volunteering, sponsoring or soliciting substantial sponsorship. Do you really believe we can regain the confidence of our sponsors now???..........and you wonder why membership is down!!! Give your heads a

shake! Good Luck finding any support from the community now!! My deepest sympathy, Jill Dakers

I am a twenty year resident of this area (born and raised near High River), long time member of the MRAS and a sponsor for more than ten years of the Fair. I have also volunteered my services as a proof reader for the Fair Book and was most impressed by the quality of the document for the 2010 Fair. My husband and I have had our Limousin cattle shown successfully at the Fair (most recently last year) and I have won prizes in the art category. I believe these credientials, plus my B.Sc. Degree in Agriculture give me some experience to draw from when I say how short sighted I believe is the cancellation of the 2010 Fair. I cannot believe that such an action, after 102 years of successful Fairs put on by the Priddis Millarville Fair Committee and community, could be responsibly enacted by the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society Board of Directors. At this time, when the agricultural community is being told more and more that they need to reconnect with consumers, many or most of whom no longer have direct

april 6, 2010 ~ Issue #142

contact with the sources of their food, to cancel the Fair, is not wise. The Priddis Millarville Fair is one of the last in the province, which showcases what farmers, artists and craftspeople in small communities can do by working together. We should be offering tours from Calgary and inviting our urban neighbours to come to the Fair to show their children where milk comes from, to see chickens and hear roosters crow. If I am not mistaken, the Fair was one of the main reasons for the founding of the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society. Calgary people come to the Millarville Market, why shouldn't they come to the the Fair, especially if we advertised the opportunity to connect with rural people? I do hope, that as responsible people, the MRAS Board of Directors will reconsider the decision to cancel the 2010 Priddis Millarville Fair. We should be working together to

9

make the 2010 Fair the most successful and well attended Fair ever. Please do, reconsider the decision to cancel the Fair. Yours Sincerely, Muriel J. Dais, BSc, BEd., Dip. Ed. After several months of dedicating time and energy to the Pandemic (2009) H1N1, Volunteers and Staff from the Okotoks Health and Wellness Centre have joined together to create the 2nd annual queen size quilt that is being raffled off in our communities to raise funds for Young Family Wellness Programs. Last year, the Coordinator of Volunteer Resources, Melissa Pryor spear-headed the raffle by engaging volunteers, staff and local merchants to create a beautiful queen size quilt in earth tone colors. You may remember us being on display at Sobeys, Walmart or your local health unit. The quilt was awarded to “Lucky Lucy Waddell” on March 21st 2009. “I still remember making the call to Lucy and I am not sure who was more excited Lucy or I. The raffle was a huge success and it was an honour to make the call.” says Pryor. The raffle raised $4640 which supported Young Family Wellness Programs such as Baby and Me, TLC and Terrific Toddlers programs in Okotoks and Black Diamond. This year, we researched needs in our community and discovered

that the population of Okotoks is 21,690 and 72% of our population is under 45 and an astonishing 46% of our population is under the age of 18. Okotoks and area is a young and vibrant community. Last year, our Public Health Nursing Team visited over 584 new babies in the Okotoks and Black Diamond area. That's 564 babies that are welcome to join free classes offered out of the health unit. Through the support of our community, including generosity from businesses like Rumpled Quilt Skins and Quilt Arts Studio, who donated materials or time to make our 2nd annual quilt raffle happen… we will make a positive impact on our young rural families. Stop by the Okotoks Health and Wellness Centre or Oilfields Hospital to purchase your ticket today or watch for us at local merchants. Tickets are $2 each or $20 for a booklet. Longview Jerky Makes Medals From Meats By Todd Curran Longview Jerky Shop won a ton of medals for their palatable products at the Alberta Meat Producers Association (AMPA) 2010 convention and trade show. Running over the March 12th to 14th weekend in the Edmonton Marriott, meat industry experts flock to the convention to show off and compete with their latest and greatest products. “We cleaned up!” says Longview Jerky Shop owner Tom Kirk. “All of our sausages won. We were awarded three gold medals and a bronze for our sausages.” In the spirit of fair play, the competitions are designed in such a fashion that producers remain anonymous, allowing the products to speak for themselves. Also, producers that enter products for competition are not allowed to vote on the categories they are participating in. In these blind competitions, meat industry professionals voted Longview Jerky Shop to receive gold medals for their honey garlic pep-

peroni, ham sausage and garlic sausage, as well as a bronze for bologna. In addition to the medals and bragging rights to making the best pepperoni in Alberta, Tom and his team turned the tables by beating sausage companies at their own competitions. “We're a jerky company,” Tom chuckles, “And there we are winning in all the sausage categories.” Another upset came when a Regina sausage company won the jerky competition. “It's the first time in 30 years we didn't win a jerky competition,” Tom says lightheartedly. “We entered a new jerky recipe with a different marinade and it was our first run before the competition.” Longview Jerky Shop has been a family business and community staple for 30 years and their phenomenal products are world-renowned, being enjoyed on Mount Everest expeditions, movie sets, road trips and trail rides. Longview Youth Group

april 6, 2010 ~ Issue #142

Red Arrow Makes Our Day

One of the treasures in life is having expectations, not only met, but surpassed. February 26th, 2010, proved to be just that. Not only did the Longview Youth Group enjoy fantastic spring weather for skiing, but were treated like royalty in the comfortable and relaxing transportation of a Red Arrow Motorcoach. This second annual ski trip to Castle Mountain was eagerly anticipated, filling the coach to capacity with as much excitement for the ride as for the slopes. Thank you Red Arrow for kindly supplying transportation again this year. Red Arrow's commitment to our comfort was lavished on us in providing excellence in communication, safety, a

complimentary well-stocked galley with snacks and hot or cold beverages, but more importantly, their dedication in giving to community development. The driver was very courteous and went out of his way to make both youth and chaperons feel at ease. Arriving at the hill, many enjoyed the lower sunny slopes, warm enough to ski without a coat, while others navigated the upper chair where the cold wind dusted off the peaks. The conditions were pleasant and the variety of lifts provided everyone with the opportunity to exercise their skill levels with only a few minor injuries. It was obvious everyone felt some level of exhaustion and they gratefully stretched out and

relaxed in the comfort of reclining seats on the ride home. Many thanks go out to the local community for funding this annual ski trip, for services provided by Red Arrow Motorcoach (Thanks Ernie), the many volunteers who gave time and energy and the area and residents for their community spirit. It was a great trip, well worth it and the youth are looking forward to next year.

tangible differences for all who reside in the community. Ancient Athenian Pericles would be proud of the total community involvement that the Sheep River Trust seems able to generate in this region. Please take time to thank these volunteers if you see them around and don't forget that Board members are Volunteers too….not just some nameless, faceless entity that are paid to look after you. They do this to help build and create a community we all want to live in!!

By Michelle Geistlinger The Board members of the Sheep River Health Trust dedicated an entire afternoon on Monday March 1st to prepare a 5 year Strategic Business Plan. The Board is dedicated to ensuring that the Mission, Vision, Goals and Values of the plan are relevant to the ever evolving healthcare in the region that it serves. The group really worked hard as they laboured to produce accu-

rate descriptions of what they wanted to accomplish as a Board. The hard working human side of the board is not often seen by the Public; rather the formal typical “Board” photo is what is usually released. Big Band Bash 2010

Foothills Composite High School and the Alberta High School of Fine Arts is hosting BIG BAND BASH 2010, a Jazz Dinner and Dance on April 23rd, 2010. The evening will feature jazz and vocal solo ensembles during a buffet dinner, with dance to follow with entertainment by the FCHS/AHSFA and Highwood High School Jazz programs. Last year Highwood High hosted the event and it was a hoot (no pun intended!). The jazz bands not only entertained musically…as Highwood High's

Jazz band performed, the FCHS/AHSFA Jazz Group hammed it up on the dance floor, encouraging timid parents to come up to dance…it worked and was so much fun! Big Band Bash 2009 was very successful and it was decided that the two high schools would switch off and that we would host it in 2010. You won't want to miss the talent of these two Foothills School Division High School Jazz Programs. They are AMAZING! Tickets are $35.00 for the dinner and dance. Dance tickets are available

Millarville’s Cool News Badminton by Sarah P., Jenissa, Courtney and Elise Millarville Community School has just started their badminton season. Our coaches are Mr. Hayden, our homeroom teacher, and Mr. Beacom, the Grade 6 teacher. We are very excited for our upcoming games, as we have worked very hard in our practices. For example, we have done a lot of stretches, warmups and skills. We plan to enjoy the rest of the badminton season this year and we thank Mr. Hayden and Mr. Beacom. Band Festival by: Kyle B., Emily, Levi and Keifer At 9:00am, the bus from Oilfields came to pick us up to drive to the Jubilee Auditorium for the Kiwanis festival. When the class got there we went down to the basement to practice our songs and when we finished practicing we went to the stage to show our music to the adjudicator. Our songs were “Overlords” and “Procession of the Lords”. When we finished our songs we got an adjudicator to help make our music even better. Afterward strangers commented on our playing, and said that we were really good. Director's Cut by Cara, Kyle J. and Russell The students at Millarville Community School will work with “The Director's Cut” from March 15th to 26th. They will be working with all the students

All of the students are very excited for them to arrive. Our Olympics by Tommy, Sarah, and Jaelynn On February 26th we had an Olympics day at our school, which took place in our field and our play pad in the afternoon. The Grade 7 class organized lots of fun activities, such as a hockey shootout, snowshoe–cross, snow soccer and our own version of a biathlon. We would have done more activities like curling, speed skating and skeleton/luge (sledding), but there was a lack of snow and ice. At least we know spring is coming! With the help of all of the grade sevens, and Mr. Hayden, we had a great time! Basketball Season by: Riel, Rydan, Cole and Kristen Our basketball team did not end up as successful as they hoped to be by the end of the season, although it was great to experience basketball at the junior high level. We played many aggressive games but unfortunately did not win many. We had great coaches, Mrs. Dawson our librarian and Mr. Hayden our Grade 7 teacher. We look forward to have the opportunity to play basketball next year with a new group of kids!

Faith Forum

Anyone who is on Facebook or has perhaps even heard of Facebook, will come upon different groups or causes that you can become a “fan” of. You often don't do anything tangible in order to be a fan, except to sign up and be counted in the number of those who are fans of that group or cause. Many people choose that same approach when it comes to God and his way. They often think that God is 'cool' in a way; especially if he fits their idea of what God should be like, or, the thought of a God sounds like a good idea. In essence they are a fan of God's. However, God asks far more of us if we are going to make that personal choice for him. Here is one example of what Christ told people what was expected if they were going to be a serious follower of his (called here a 'disciple.') “One day when large groups of people were walking along with him, Jesus turned and told them, "Anyone who comes to me but refuses to let go of father, mother, spouse, children, brothers, sisters—yes, even one's own self!—can't be my disciple. Anyone who won't shoulder his own cross and follow behind me can't be my disciple. Simply put, if you're not

Fan or Follower? By Gloria Wessner

willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and kiss it good-bye, you can't be my disciple.” (Luke 14: 25-27, 33 The Message) Being a serious follower of God is not easy. It isn't an easy ticket to heaven, nor is it where God is like the parent that whatever the child asks for, they receive it. No, being a serious follower requires, as the word of God says, that HE leads and I follow – by being unselfish, in other words, I live to serve God and others, and put their needs above my own. It doesn't mean being a doormat to other people, but I'm not to be self-centered and think of only me. This part from the word of God below explains it even a little more deeply. “Then he told them what they could expect for themselves: "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You're not in the driver's seat—I am. Don't run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I'll show you how. Selfhelp is no help at all. Selfsacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? If any of you is embar-

rassed with me and the way I'm leading you, know that the Son of Man will be far more embarrassed with you when he arrives in all his splendor in company with the Father and the holy angels." (Luke 9:23-26 The Message) This is a hard message to hear from God, one that requires thinking, studying and 'counting the cost' as he talks about in another part of his word. He wants us to make an intelligent and deliberate choice to be his follower. Having said that, living a fulfilled life as a serious follower of God far outweighs any selfsacrifices I make to become that follower. It would take many paragraphs to explain more fully just how fulfilling and content you are when you do follow his way (and it can't be done in this size of article.) But in a nutshell, Jesus puts it this way: “I came so they can have real AND eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” (John 10:10 The Message) What about you? Are you perhaps just a fan of God's? Or are you willing to consider being a serious follower of his? Readers are invited to write Gloria at: gloriawes@hotmail.com.

Who Knew? The tulip was introduced to Europe in the mid 16th century from the Ottoman Empire. As 'tulip mania' overtook Europe, contracts were signed to purchase tulips at the end of the season (known as FUTURES CONTRACTS). Thus the Dutch developed this and many of the techniques of modern finance, all based on the marketing of tulip bulbs.

by Eric Francis Aries (March 20-April 19) In the film Waking Life, the lead character finds himself in a lucid dream, from which he keeps waking up, into another dream. Each awakening arrives with a transformation, and with a new level of awareness, but he still cannot seem to actually come to full consciousness. Along the way he encounters many interesting people and continuously seeks out new knowledge, but a mystery persists, which is the mystery of what it means to be awake. There are some psychological theories consistent with his experience, defining consciousness itself as a trance. In these days of your life, I would propose that the measure of how awake you are is indicated by what you create. True enough, not everyone is the 'creative type' and we're generally motivated to consume energy rather than to offer ourselves to the world in a sincere and daring way: which underscores my point. Taurus (April 19-May 20) Your mission seems to be assembling the scattered parts of yourself. That might look like guiding your life toward one goal, which will help, though that's more of an external way to consider the issue. Viewed from an interior perspective, the question involves fear, in particular, the fear of not knowing who you are. I know this one is going around. I know people are developing strange coping mechanisms to deal with the uncertainty of self, though you might want to be on the lookout for two of the more common ones. The first is over-identifying with what you attach yourself to: that is, clinging. The second is by living in fantasy, or trying to. I suggest moving precisely the opposite direction: less emphasis on who or what you're attached to, and more emphasis on seeing possibilities in yourself and experimenting with them for the sake of gaining actual experience. Gemini (May 20-June 21) You may be astounded at the lack of compassion that some people display, though I suggest you not reply in kind. It's difficult enough to see and admit the truth of what human nature is capable of, though at the same time you need to figure out how to make your world warmer rather than colder. Warmer may include telling the truth as you perceive it, though be sure you direct your words carefully and don't draw blood if you can avoid it. It will be adequate if you perceive certain individuals for who and what they are; that may even provide some incentive for them to evolve a bit. Remember, that you're on a mission that involves

being true to yourself and your own cause rather than correcting the ways of anyone else. Though it may seem to take forever, the best way to teach really is by example. Cancer (June 21-July 22) You're doing everything you can to let go of past emotional patterns, though some of them seem determined to hold onto you. Or: are you just seeing and experiencing those patterns for what they are? This is a little like doing a cleanse. You start the process and all this stuff comes up on the way out. You get to experience the gunk at full-strength before you let it go. Meanwhile something else is happening, which is that you're discovering how much turns on the thoughts you think, particularly about the goals that you have and that you act on. This level where concepts, ideas and objectives exist is where to focus your awareness during the next few days. You seem to be in the process of making a commitment to yourself about the direction of your life. This is the real thing: be honest with yourself and let the momentum of truth carry you forward. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Your long-term vision may have nothing to do with what you're doing now; that is one potential. Or it may be a radical evolution of what you're doing now, so totally transformed that you might never have expected that one would have emerged from the other. This is nothing other than how ideas evolve; they are living things, and they go through a series of metamorphs into each new form. Or is it you who is changing? That is a more accurate description; your ideas, in particular, your ideas about your life, are like an effigy that you model yourself after. I suggest you experiment with some highly specific ideas about what you want to happen - the kind you think are too specific to apply to a future that has yet to manifest. Create a vision and describe it down to the subtle details, such as the weather and the pictures on the wall. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Peel back the layers of yourself, and reveal your truth to someone close to you. You seem to be doing this on the emotional level, experimenting with feeling all kinds of unusual or intense things in the presence of others. Now you can move to the mental level and put words to your feelings. At first you may feel extra vulnerable doing this, until you figure out that you can spring off of someone's energy, or use it as a psychic magnet, to draw out parts of yourself that you never imagined existed. This is an actual transformative process, though in the form of play. Your ideal play partner may or may not be your significant other; there may be more than one. I suggest you experiment with

someone same sex, and opposite sex. You are exploring both sides of your brain. Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Your relationships have been full of surprises lately, but would you have them any other way? True, you have a stable side that loves when life is steady and predictable. Then there's the rest of your psyche, which thrives on uncertainty. There are some things you're hearing and experiencing which come across as pleasant and daring, and others which seem harsh and strange - at first. All you need to remember is that another person's perception of you says more about them than it does about you. The interesting part is that you will learn something about your hidden nature. Some event a few days ago tipped you off that there was something to notice and now the words to describe it are starting to formulate. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) You need to find the one mistake you keep making. It's the same one you forget that you keep making, so it may tend to slip away. When you rediscover what it is, I suggest you write it on the wall. Or better yet, immediately go through all your current plans, appointments, clients, lovers, dates and potential lovers and dates, and look for anyplace you see the least chance you might do it again. If you stop now and conduct a thorough investigation, you'll actually be able to avoid the next iteration of this particular mistake, and potentially break the cycle entirely. The issue is one of awareness, but it's also about making sure you know what your goals are and then making sure that every decision you make is in support of those goals. You've spent months reviewing your highest aspirations and making commitments to yourself; this is about honouring those promises. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Remember, don't be a rebel for its own sake. Your values are more evolved than this, and you need to be cautious of the element of pride. Rebellion is a tool, and at times a weapon, that I suggest you use judiciously. Pride is dangerous when it's not mixed with a good helping of awareness. If you find yourself getting caught up in the chaos of another person's life, check in and see if you weren't using one of these two factors to excess. It would help if you remember that there are some things about society that make no sense, and that you cannot do anything about, except ignore them and live your life your way. As you may soon discover, doing your thing because it's what you want usually has far more influence on your environment than does trying to change the external world.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) People do things for their own reasons. If you listen to them you may not get the idea that they're good reasons, or that the person is being honest about their motives; but that's a basic part of encountering the thought process of others. I suggest resisting the temptation to see anyone, including yourself, as a victim of circumstance, or a victim of the influences of another person. Nobody is under anyone's thrall; credit yourself and others with the intelligence to make their own decisions. It's true that those around you seem particularly mysterious right now. Hold the space for that mystery and invest your energy dipping into your own inner core; you'll find plenty there to nourish your soul, and remind yourself that you do quite well independent of the desires and motives of others. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) If you're becoming aware of the darker angels in your nature, you don't need to worry that this is who you actually are. Awareness is the key to being free of them, rather than enslaved by them. All darkness operates through luring us into unconsciousness, and light is the light of awareness. One of the seeming paradoxes of becoming aware is acknowledging all this stuff we don't like, or don't want to look at, or don't believe is true. Note that much of it is the result of damage done to us in the past, rather than who we inherently are. Fortunately, patterns created by past events are no match for the underlying strength and truth of your being. If the thing that stands between you and the pain of this material is awareness, it's not awareness of the passive kind, but more accurately a quality of maneuvering your mind with skill and precision, particularly when you find yourself in the dark. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20 You've been locked into a particular emotional pattern for a long time, and you're starting to become aware of this fact. You will be even more aware of it when you suddenly discover yourself free of this pattern one day and you wonder how it is that it had such a grip on you. The reason is that you believed in it; or perhaps that you still do. I suggest you invest some energy looking into the power of belief, which is one of the elements that creates the shape and tenor of the reality we see. While it seems difficult to change our beliefs, it's even more difficult for us to have an experience that violates our beliefs; in practice it's easier to change the belief first and have the new experience second. In case you're wondering whether you're capable of this, or whether certain things are possible in the world, I assure you that you have all the evidence you need.
