MARKET DEVELOPMENTS 2014 – What lies ahead? Projects, plants and developments in the industrial gas world in the year ahead. t transpired to be another progressive year for the industrial gases industry in 2013, with a number of significant developments occurring in the market and externally. Resolution to the future governance of the BLM-operated Federal Helium Reserve in Amarillo, Texas was arguably one of the biggest stories of the year, and helium project news will likely continue to make the headlines in 2014 too. Likewise, the LNG sector will surely gain further significance for the gases industry in the year ahead, while the step-up of activities in the emerging economies will be ongoing and newer, increasingly energy efficient plants are set to be commissioned the world over. With order backlogs notoriously strong among some of the industry’s biggest players, here we provide a global round-up of expected project activity in 2014, from ASUs in Chicago and Arizona to hydrogen production plants in Saudi Arabia and China. Activity is expected to be strong in China, a growing market force in the industrial gases industry, while a number of LNG-related projects are on the agenda in the year ahead – reflecting the sector’s increasing significance. Directory exclusive I → MEXICO A new cryogenic ASU comes into operation in the industrial North Mexican region of Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila in early 2014, offering a daily capacity of 500 tonnes per day (tpd). The plant will provide oxygen, nitrogen and argon to a new steel plant being built by Daecero; it is understood that the overall contract will enable Daecero to produce 1.5 million tonnes of steel per year. → VENEZUELA Scheduled for completion in the second semester of 2014 are two hydrogen reformers as part of the Deep Conversion project being executed by a consortium for Venezuela’s state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) to upgrade the Puerto La Cruz refinery. The two high-efficiency top-fired 135-million standard cubic feet per day (151,000 normal cubic metres per hour) steam reformers from Technip will produce high-purity hydrogen and export steam, and will feature the latest nitrogen oxide reduction technology to ensure minimum emissions. 06 | gasworld Directory 2014 www.gasworld.com/directory GLOBAL MARKET DEVELOPMENTS 07 → US One of the biggest developments in the US market in 2014 relates to the helium business, which has arguably been in the headlines in recent years like never before. With a currently still tight global helium market, early 2014 is expected to see the start-up of the long-awaited helium production plant at Big Piney, Wyoming. Air Products and MATHESON, a member of the Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (TNSC) group, are the two companies behind the jointly-owned liquid helium production plant, designed to produce 200 million standard cubic feet per year at start-up, with expectations for future expansion to 400 million standard cubic feet per year. The plant will process crude helium produced by a natural gas processing facility operated by Cimarex Energy Co. gasworld understands that construction of the plant is complete and start up is expected in early 2014, coincident with the startup of Denbury’s Riley Ridge natural gas plant. Airgas’ new ASU in the Chicago area has been expected to begin production this autumn but we understand this has been revised to summer 2015, producing oxygen, nitrogen and argon for the increasing demand in the region’s merchant gases market. Expansion of Air Products’ existing syngas separation unit (SSU) in Geismar, Louisiana is set to commence operations in second quarter 2014, increasing the supply of carbon monoxide (CO) in the area, mainly for the supply of BASF’s world-scale formic acid plant being built at its Geismar Verbund site. The second of Air Liquide Large Industries US LP’s new projects in Freeport, Texas is due to go on-stream in 2014, as part of its Gulf Coast Pipeline (GCPL) and Hydrogen/Syngas businesses. The project involves the construction of a new liquid oxygen storage and vaporisation facility at the Freeport air separation unit (ASU) complex to supply oxygen to the GCPL pipeline network and represents an increase of nearly 25% over current storage and vaporization capacities on the GCPL. MATHESON’s new large capacity ASU in Mesa, Arizona is expected to be on-stream during third quarter 2014, producing high-purity merchant product to better support its current customers in the area and the acquired US AIRWELD distribution business. The ASU will supply oxygen, nitrogen and argon product. An LNG processing facility, producing approximately 100,000 gallons of LNG per day, is expected to be fully operational by end of 2014 in Weld County, Colorado. The plant, which will be fully integrated with a new gas processing plant, is being provided by Chart Energy & Chemicals and will serve Noble Energy’s northern Colorado operations in the DJ Basin. A changing of the guard will be taking place in Allentown, Pennsylvania this year, with the news last September that Air Products will add three new independent directors to its Board of Directors and had commenced the search to identify a successor to retiring chairman and CEO John E. McGlade. McGlade will retire this year and will continue to serve as chairman and CEO during the search process, and then as chairman for an agreed-upon transition period in 2014. The incoming CEO will also join the Board as a Director. gasworld Directory 2014 | 07 08 GLOBAL MARKET DEVELOPMENTS → UK Originally expected to enter commercial operation in 2014 is the world’s largest renewable energy plant in the UK, using advanced gasification energy-from-waste (EfW) technology.
