DEZZI RACEWAY Track History
Back in 1985 the Dezzi Raceway was a shadow of what it is today, a grass runway cut into what once was a sugar cane farm, overlooking the unspoiled beauty of the KZN south coast. At that time the Wesbank V8 Super Series was ripping up the tar in SA and Des Gutzeit, looking for somewhere to test his V8’s, decided to tar the runway. For 25 years Gutzeit and his growing sons Jade, Shane and Blake used the old airfield to fuel their passion for racing. It took a brand new global motorsport phenomena to kickstart the track’s next evolution. In 2010 Drifting was sweeping the globe and starting to make big waves in South Africa. Des and his wife Louise saw the new era of precision handling under extreme drifting conditions and knew they wanted to get involved. They decided to upgrade so that Des and Shane could get to grips with the new way of racing. “As a family we’ve always been cautious in business,” said Louise Gutzeit on the track’s beginnings. “All we wanted was a place for the family to practice. We had no idea the track would become what it has.” Built up on the southern part of the field the new track included five corners, prime conditions for the Gutzeit’s to get to grips with the world’s newest and fastest growing motorsport. After a year of testing and research the Gutzeit family realised they needed something extra and so the ‘Skorkscrew’ was born, a second drift circuit in the northern corner of the airfield. The new track bettered the old with an up and downhill within seven tight corners, taking the Dezzi Raceway’s drift capabilities to world class standard. ‘If you look internationally,” said Des, “in Japan they’re doing it, in America they’re doing it. Elevations is a crucial part of the excitement of drifting, so we knew we wanted to include them.” With two sets of pristine circuit laid out, a pair that in total offer eight possible drift variations with the ability to race in both directions and enter from either side, Des felt ready to share what had been created. The opportunity presented itself in 2013 when the well-known Knysna Hillclimb event was cancelled.
The Dezzi Invitational Time Attack was held on June of that year, based on the international Time Attack formula. Cars enter the track in staggered groups of six to ten, each driver competing not against the others but rather the clock, the fastest lap times netting drivers a spot in the final round. Here the format reveals its true appeal, with drivers entering the track completely solo in a high pressure sudden death battle against the fastest recorded time. As the popularity of the drift tracks continued to rise, in 2014 Des and Louise decided to take the next step. A new stretch of high speed corners joined the north and south circuits into a full circuit track, one that offers exceptional speeds in a matchless setting. 2015 brought with it the promise of a new addition; the extension of the original old runway to accommodate a 1/4 mile drag strip. The drag track is currently under construction. “The Dezzi Raceway is unique,” said Louise. “It’s very driver friendly. We tried to ensure that guys with less horsepower but great skill have the ability to win. All kinds of cars can be competitive, it’s the skill of the driver that counts at Dezzi Raceway.” Along with a track built by drivers for drivers, the Dezzi Raceway offers fans all the amenities to make an unforgettable day at the races. There are two sets of open pits, one lock-up pit, an aeroplane hangar, viewing decks and banks, marshalling towers, hospitality zones, a timing office and briefing room, showers and toilets and a big entertainment area which is currently under construction. With the backing of the track by Motorsport South Africa and several other associations, and having been approved for all types of racing (motorcycle racing is currently in the final testing phase, and looking very positive) the Dezzi Raceway has announced itself as a bold new high speed presence on the South African racing circuit, and the pride of KZN motor racing.
