Former leader of Hindu Temple of Georgia convicted on fraud and felony charges Atlanta, August 25, 2014 – Annamalai Annamalai, a/k/a Dr. Commander Selvam, a/k/a Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar, the former leader of the now defunct Hindu Temple of Georgia, was convicted of 34 felony counts following a two-week jury trial. “This defendant traded on his perceived religious authority and spiritual powers to cheat the faithful who believed in him,” said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates. “The jury saw through his deception, and he is being held accountable for his fraud.” “Annamalai Annamalai clearly took advantage of his religious standing in the community as well as the individuals who respected and revered him” stated Veronica F. Hyman-Pillot, Special Agent in Charge, IRS-Criminal Investigation. He used deceit and fraud, to circumvent the bankruptcy courts and to collect money for his own personal benefit. Today’s verdict should send a strong message that this will not be tolerated.” According to United States Attorney Yates, the indictment, and other information presented in court: Annamalai generated income through the Hindu Temple of Georgia (“the Hindu Temple”) by charging fees to his followers in exchange for providing spiritual or related services.

In a typical transaction, a follower agreed to purchase a particular service for a communicated price, and provided a credit card number by telephone to guarantee payment. Annamalai caused the followers’ credit card numbers to be charged on multiple occasions, in excess of the agreed amount and without authorization. If the followers disputed the charges with their respective credit card companies, Annamalai submitted false documentation to the credit card companies in support of the unauthorized charges, which formed the basis for his conviction on bank fraud charges. The income generated by the Hindu Temple through these credit card charges was used to fund the personal lifestyle of Annamalai and his family, who owned or controlled numerous homes and real properties, luxury vehicles, and foreign bank accounts in India. Annamalai was convicted of willfully filing a false tax return for the 2007 year, for failing to disclose his financial interest in foreign bank accounts held in India. Annamalai was also convicted of bankruptcy fraud offenses in connection with the Hindu Temple’s petition for bankruptcy protection in August 2009. Annamalai concealed assets from creditors and others by diverting credit card receipts and donations intended for the Hindu Temple to a

bank account in the name of a different entity. Annamalai was also convicted of money laundering for using proceeds from the bankruptcy fraud to pay mortgages on properties that he owned, and payments to himself. Annamalai was also convicted on three counts of obstruction and false statements in connection with the grand jury investigation and the bankruptcy proceeding. Annamalai transmitted a fraudulent email to an IRS Special Agent, which was falsely made to appear as if the email had been written and authored by a witness of the criminal investigation. Annamalai submitted a false affidavit to the grand jury, and a false affidavit to the Bankruptcy Court in connection with the Hindu Temple’s bankruptcy proceeding.

Finally, Annamalai was convicted of conspiring with his spouse and co-defendant, Parvathi Sivanadiyan, and others to conceal the arrest of co-defendant Kumar Chinnathambi. Chinnathambi was later arrested and pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bankruptcy fraud on July 17, 2014. He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 24, 2014, at 10 a.m. before District Court Judge Timothy C. Batten, Sr. Sivanadiyan is awaiting trial. Annamalai was convicted of bank fraud offenses, filing a false tax return, bankruptcy fraud offenses, money laundering, obstruction, false statement offenses, and conspiring to conceal a person from arrest. He is scheduled to be sentenced on November 13, 2014, at 10 a.m. before District Court Judge Timothy C. Batten, Sr.

to be making a substantial investment in Georgia’s film industry infrastructure with state of the art lighting and grip equipment.” A recent economic study indicates as many as 2,300 direct jobs will be created at Atlanta Media Campus, which will feature six state of the art sound stages totaling 115,000 square feet, over 75,000 square feet of acoustically treated large scale production space, another 100,000 square feet in production offices and 110,000 square feet in dedicated workshops and service provider space. It will also include more than 30 acres of paved backlot. The 114-acre mixed-use development will also include 300 hotel rooms, a film school, student housing, multifamily housing, office space and complementary retail uses. The redevelopment site is located in the Gwinnett Village CID at the OFS optical fiber manufacturing site in Norcross, formerly known as the Western Electric/ AT&T/Lucent facility. OFS will continue its operations on the remaining 66 acres. “In keeping with our company’s development philosophy,” Jacoby says, “we intend to build a green and sustainable studio including solar power, a chilled water plant, and a recycling program for used sets. Most importantly, rather than developing buildings from the ground up, we are up-cycling the existing obsolete buildings for studio, production, office and mill space.” Jacoby Development has been a pioneer in adaptive re-use development projects such as Atlantic Station, Aerotropolis Atlanta (the redevelopment of a former Ford assembly plant into Porsche North America’s headquarters), and ONE Daytona (a mixed use development in partnership with International Speedway Corporation).

Nephew of Sony’s founder heads Playstation unit Tokyo, Sept 1, 2014 — The nephew of a Sony founder today started as head of a regional gaming unit, after the Japanese electronics giant sailed past the 10 million mark in sales of its PlayStation 4. Atsushi Morita, 54, will run Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia (SCEJA), a unit of Sony Computer Entertainment which develops the popular gaming console. Morita, a nephew of Sony co-founder Akio Morita, said he was aiming to help continue the latest PlayStation’s blazing success. The console was only released in the US and Europe in November, and in its home market in February. “PlayStation 4’s global sales hit the 10 million mark last month, the fastest pace for any of our past hardware,” he told a press briefing in Tokyo.

“I will boost the industry in Japan further with game users as well as creators and business partners.” Sony is winning the console wars for the first time in nearly a decade, offering a rare bright spot on the company’s otherwise troubled balance sheet. Stellar sales of the new PlayStation 4 gave it a huge leg up over rival Nintendo, which has dominated the console market for eight years. Sony Computer Entertainment sold more than 18.7 million consoles worldwide in the business year to March 31, against Nintendo’s official sales figure of 16.3 million units.

China’s manufacturing sector records slower growth Shanghai, Sept 1, 2014 — China’s manufacturing sector posted slower growth in August, with the purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for the sector fell to 51.1 per cent from 51.7 per cent in July, said the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) today.

orders fell to 52.5 from 53.6 in July.

A reading above 50 per cent signals expansion and below indicates contraction.

China has announced a series of mini-stimulus measures recently, including targeted monetary easing, quickened fiscal spending, quicker government spending in railway construction and supportive measures in selected sectors.

The PMI data showed the production, new orders, raw material inventory, employment and delivery time all registering a drop in August. The employment sub-index shrank to 48.2 per cent in August from July’s 48.3 per cent, while the raw material inventory slipped to 48.6 per cent from 49 per cent in July, both lower than the 50 per cent reading. The production sub-index dropped to 53.2 from July’s 54.2, while new

The performance signaled that the Chinese economy was still facing some downward pressure, said ZhangLiqun, an economist at Development Research Centre of the State Council.

Alibaba prepares for blockbuster IPO Shanghai, August 31, 2014 - Alibaba, described as a cross between Amazon and Ebay, has reported operating profit greater than the combined earnngings of the two leading US online retailers ahead of its initial public offering in the states. Alibaba’s operating income for the three months to June rose to USD $1.1-billion, which is 42% more than the operating profit of Ebay and Amazon combined. In addition, Alibaba’s net profit was more than double that of Ebay and Amazon put together.

EBay and Amazon have a combined market value of USD $226 billion, according to Bloomberg. Alibaba said the number of customers accessing sites through smartphones, a key part of its growth strategy, increased strongly in the first and second quarters. Transactions via mobile phones accounted for 32.8% of Alibaba’s total in the June quarter, up from 27.4% in the previous three months and just 12% a year earlier.

The results from China’s largest online retailer are likely the last to be announced before the IPO, which is planned for early September.

The company had 188-million mobile monthly active users in June, up from 163 million in March, according to its filing ahead of the IPO.

The Hangzhou-based company, whose net profit nearly tripled to USD $1.99-billion, has yet to set a price for shares in the IPO, but analysts say the retailer could be worth as much as USD $187-billion following the move.

Yahoo! owns a 23% in Alibaba and the Sunnyvale, California-based search engine company has indicated it will be selling the largest chunk of shares in the IPO.

China gives Microsoft 20 days to provide explanation in anti-trust probe Beijing, Sept 1, 2014 — A Chinese anti-trust regulator said today it has given Microsoft Corp 20 days to reply to queries on the compatability of its Windows operating system and Office software suite amid a probe into the world’s largest software company. The State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) questioned Microsoft Vice President David Chen and gave the company a deadline to make an explanation, the agency said in a short statement on its website. SAIC also repeated that it suspected the company has not fully disclosed issues relating to the compatability of the software and the operating system. “[A] special investigation team conducted an anti-monopoly investigation inquiry with Microsoft Vice President Chen Shi (David Chen), and required that Microsoft make a written explanation within 20 days,” the SAIC said in a statement on its website. In a statement, Microsoft said it was “serious about complying with China’s laws and committed to addressing SAIC’s questions and concerns”.

Microsoft is one of at least 30 foreign companies that have come under scrutiny by China’s anti-monopoly regulators, as the government seeks to enforce its six-year old antitrust law. Critics say the law is being used to unfairly target overseas businesses, a charge the regulators deny. Last month, a delegation from chipmaker Qualcomm Inc, led by company President Derek Aberle, met officials at the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) as part of that regulator’s investigation of the San Diego-based firm. NDRC said earlier this year that the US chipmaker is suspected of overcharging and abusing its market position in wireless communication standards. Microsoft’s Satya Nadella is expected to make his first visit to China as chief executive later this month.

A student perspective into the Governor’s Honors Program By Aryn Tan

Standing tall at 5 ft 8 inches, SzeYee Abigail Tan, is not your typical Asian-American teenage girl. She is one of the many students who auditioned for the Governor’s Honors Program (GHP). In case you are not familiar with this program, it is a highly competitive program that requires a two-part interview: regional and state for admission. By having an interview, the judges are able to seek out the most passionate students. Students who are in the 10th and 11th grades all over the state of Georgia are eligible to have the opportunity to try out with a teacher recommendation. The program lasts four weeks, all expenses paid, including both dorm and food. It is located at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia. This program is unique to Georgia. Abigail has used the nickname, “Abby” for as long as she can remember. Looking back at her GHP journey, it all started in ninth grade when Abby took drawing and painting. Abby was encouraged and inspired by her then art teacher, Ms. Cook, to participate in tenth grade. She was then nominated in tenth grade by Ms. Cronon to audition in the regional and state rounds. Due to the competitiveness of the program, she did not make it. In a year’s time, though, Abby had radically changed. Abby had a full mouth of braces and left behind her insecurities. art. By comparing different cultures, it allows the students to express both visually and stylistically. How did this particular event change different societies? This method of teaching gives the students the freedom to learning about others. In addition, it allows the student to learn about his or her own heritage. It creates an environment in which students are open minded to learn about and embrace others differences. She learned to manage rigorous coursework alongside a highly developed portfolio of 8-12 pieces from I.B. Art. Abby Tan posing with her artwork and is all smiles with the Governor’s Honors Program.

the previous year was, “ A growth in confidence and being myself.” She picked herself up and strived to get into the program. She also started I.B. Diploma at Norcross High School. At school, Abby took I.B., which is a part of a global perspective of curriculum. Often times, humans can be ignorant and closed minded about other societies. This program broadens the students’ perspectives. In particular, Abby took I.B. Art, in which you relate cultures to pieces of

Abby continues to inspire those around her community and her school. Her most important piece of advice, “You must have a passion in your core subject area. It is only by showing the judges that I have the desire to learn, not necessarily that I have the talent at this program is was changing factor for me personally.” Many of the staff had previously attended GHP and wanted to impact this program. There is no grade evaluation, which gives the students a stress-free learning environment. At GHP, Abby was challenged to go outside of her comfort zone. This was something she had done a meniscal amount in high school. In particular,

she was able to make sculptures and large-scale paintings. The instructors told the students to start making a chair with wood and construct it in our own interpretation. With the large-scale paintings, the students were advised to take risks and not be clean cut. Abigail’s favorite thing she said, “ I got to work with materials that I normally would not have and I learned how to work with power tools!” Abby took her own approach, by going abstract and not going the traditional objective perspective. At GHP, Abby had the opportunity to work with materials that she normally would not have a chance to work with. For example, she used oil paints that cost well over 500 dollars! She was also able to make rocku pots, which are a type of firing that happens-glazed look. Abby agreed about the clichéd saying that, “GHP changes your life! The students attending GHP are confident and know what they excel at. Skills can range from being same level or higher than you.” Abby personally admitted that students learn from others behaviors as well as his or her own individual style. Students were assigned a roommate, most of the time a different major than the one they had. This would allow for the intermingling

Georgia Asian Times September 1-15, 2014

of majors and being able to learn how to work with different people. Abby’s roommate was Sabrina Buxani, who was a Chemistry major from Warner Robins, GA. During Abby’s free time, she enjoyed various activities. These activities included seminars with whimsical titles, concerts performed by students, and bonding with friends. There was even a chance to hear Governor Nathan Deal answers select questions the students asked. She commented, “Trying new things and getting outside my comfort zone. Even though I am not good at dancing, I learned how to have fun with it.” Dances were one way she opened up. The dances included Alternate Universe, Team Dance, Graffiti Dance, and The Late Great. By dressing up to the theme, Abby became more open-minded to dance. She got to learn various dance moves that made it enjoyable.

The people you surround yourself with impact you the most. GHP students come in with a major that they excel at already. So, the instructors encourage the students to choose something different for your major. Abby humbly admits, “By being a math minor, it was not at all my strong suit at school. However, I got to try and experience something different and new.” With such small class size, the students were able to receive the right balance of teaching and hands on work. The class was called, “Math in the Arts.” She was able to scale, rotate, and translate shapes. In addition, program images on the computer to create a cohesive image or object. For instance, it took two weeks to make a snowman. From there, they made a house. The importance of both of these images was learning the transition between 2D, 3D, and 4D. In particular, this can be seen in String Art, Origami, and Hyper cubes.

Page 9

Abby had insights on college life. She was able to be independent and keep track of what she needed to do. In addition, she could follow up with friends conveniently. Her seminars brought out the fun side of herself. Abby took on a greater responsibility while being at GHP. The only struggle was being home sick for the first week. She has no regrets about being nominated and being rejected the first go around. Abby gushes, “My disappointment shaped me and I am proud of what I have accomplished now.” She believes that she can be successful as an artist. The combination of passion with hard work will continue with her after GHP.

with a majority of them.” Abby plans on having reunions with some of her fellow GHP friends at a Korean BBQ place in Atlanta. Abby is a senior at Norcross High School, being an advocate of the GHP program. She is currently the co-president of National Art Honors Society. Abby is applying to colleges this year and is ambitious about her future career in art. Aryn Tan is enrolled at University of Georgia.

After completing the last week, Abby relishes her time with her new GHP friends. Her close friendships have made her feel welcomed. She admits that, “The people at GHP are extremely open-minded and I kept in contact

Abby is able to experiment with her ideas for art in the Governor’s Honors Program.

LIFESTYLE Islamic State members, one of whom, Abu Moussa, had recently declared that the group would one day “raise the flag of Allah in the White House.” Another tweet congratulated militant Yazidis who claimed to have killed 22 Islamic State fighters in Iraq.

US cyber-warriors battle Islamic State on social media Washington, Aug 31, 2014 — The United States has launched a social media offensive against the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, setting out to win the war of ideas by ridiculing the militants with a mixture of blunt language and sarcasm. Diplomats and experts are the first to admit that the digital blitz being waged on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube will never be a panacea to combat the jihadists. But US officials see social media as an increasingly crucial battlefield as they aim to turn young minds in the Muslim world against groups like IS and Al-Qaeda. For the past 18 months, US officials have targeted dozens of social network accounts linked to Islamic radicals, posting comments, photos and videos and often engaging in tit-fot-tat exchanges with those which challenge America. At the US State Department, employees at the Centre for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications (CSCC), created in 2011, manage an Arabic-language Twitter account set up in 2012, an English-language equivalent and a Facebook page, launched this week.

Many skirmishes, few battles A senior US State Department official described the strategy as a kind of cyber guerrilla campaign. “It is not a panacea, it is not a silver bullet,” the official explained. “People exaggerate, people think this is worthless or they think it a magic thing that will make the extremists surrender. It is neither one of those. It is slow, steady, daily engagement pushing back on a daily basis. “It is a war of thousands of skirmishes, but no big battles. America likes big battles but it is not — it is like guerrilla warfare,” said the official. The murder of US journalist James Foley, whose execution by Islamic State militants on August 19 was released in a video on the Internet, jolted the new breed of US cyber-warriors into a frenzy. Since Foley’s murder, the CSCC has ramped up its Twitter campaign, posting tributes to the slain reporter, opinion pieces and analyses on radical Islam from across the international media, along with cartoons and graphic photos. The State Department last week tweeted about the death in Syria of

Another post was more in keeping with the sober diplomatic tone Washington is used to, a photo-montage showing Syria’s leader Bashar Al-Assad alongside Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in front of a city in ruins. “Baghdadi and Assad in a race to destroy Syria — don’t make it worse,” reads a message. Historic parallels The US-managed Twitter accounts are also not squeamish about reproducing images distributed by jihadists depicting mass executions, drawing historic parallels between Islamic State militants and the Nazis. One post showed armed Islamic State fighters standing over a ditch filled with executed people, alongside another almost identical image of Nazis killing people in similar circumstances. “Then & Now: Nazis — like ISIS — murdered out of intolerance, hatred, zeal,” read a comment alongside the two images. Satire is also used to undermine militants, with one re-tweeted cartoon referring to the “ISIS bucket challenge” featuring a participant named as “the civilised world” being drenched by a bucket of blood. The US officials say the social media offensive is an attempt to “contest space” on social networks which had previously been dominated by Islamist radicals. “This is an area, a field, where before we came along the adversaries had this space to themselves,” the official explained.

“You had English language extremists that could say any kind of poison and there will be very low push-back against them,” he added. The ultimate aim is to make youths in the West or Muslim nations think twice before embarking on a journey to Syria or Iraq to join Islamic State fighters. US officials are also mindful of striking the right tone as they troll Islamists. “Twitter is unfortunately or fortunately a platform which is suitable for what we call snark, sarcasm, for insulting people,” the official said. “This is something also we are trying to do, we try to attack. “We are respectful about things, the loss of human life of innocent people, victims of AQ or victims of ISIS, that is not something for sarcasm. “But when you are mocking them, it is effective to draw the comparison between what they say and what they do. The hypocrisy of this group is a weakness.” William Braniff, executive director of National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland, said the US online strategy was a step in the right direction but would take a while to yield results. “For a decade the government is criticised for not engaging in the world of ideas online,” Braniff said. “The department of State eventually created this program in part to address that criticism. “This is a just a drop in a bucket — there is so much extremist propaganda online and so many formats for extremists to dialogue that this is really just spitting into the wind. “We have to give these sort of programs time to build momentum.”

After four years in Buenos Aires he signed for Porto, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most lethal marksmen, scoring 72 goals in 87 games. He won the Portuguese Cup in his first season and helped Porto to a treble of league, cup and Europa League honors in 2011, scoring the only goal in the Europa League final against Braga.

Man United reportedly agree to Falcao loan deal London, Sept 1, 2014 — Manchester United have agreed a sensational deal to sign Colombia striker Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan from Monaco, according to widespread British media reports today. The prolific 28-year-old forward, who missed the World Cup with a serious knee injury, has also been linked with Real Madrid, Manchester City and Arsenal. But several media outlets, including the Press Association and the BBC, reported that United had secured his services — subject to a medical examination — on the final day of the close-season transfer window. United will pay Monaco a fee of around €10 million (US$13.1 million) for the loan and will have an option to make the deal permanent for €55 million at the end of the season, said sources at Monaco. Falcao, who has scored 20 goals in 51 appearances for Colombia, is under contract at Monaco until 2018. Since returning from injury at the start of the season, he has scored two goals in three matches, but he was left out of the squad for Monaco’s 1-1 draw at home to Lille in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Falcao joined Monaco from Atletico last year in a deal worth around €60 million, having scored 70 goals in 91 games during his time in Spain. He scored nine goals in his first 17 league games with Monaco, but his debut season was curtailed in January when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, forcing him to miss the World Cup.

A move to Atletico Madrid followed later that year and he won the Europa League again in his first season, scoring twice as Diego Simeone’s side overcame Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the final.

If completed, the deal would leave United manager Louis van Gaal with a rich pool of striking talent at his disposal, as Falcao would join Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford. United are rebuilding after a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season and have spent around £130 million on new players, including a British-record £59.7 million move for Angel di Maria. Lethal marksman They have also offloaded a numbers of players, with Shinji Kagawa returning to former club Borussia Dortmund yesterday and Javier Hernandez reported to be in talks over a loan move to Real Madrid. Van Gaal is still waiting for his first competitive win as United manager, after two draws and a defeat in the league and a humiliating 4-0 loss to third-tier Milton Keynes Dons in the League Cup. Lee Chong Wei losses another world title Copenhagen, Sept 1, 2014 — A crestfallen Lee Chong Wei and the Malaysian Badminton Association (BAM) were left apologizing to the nation after their independence day celebrations were soured by the much-loved shuttler’s defeat in the world championship final. World number one Lee had been tipped to land his first major title in the absence of great adversary Lin Dan but it was the double Olympic champion’s Chinese compatriot Chen Long who dished out the punishment in Sunday’s final in Denmark.

“I am disappointed with the way I played today. I guess my fans are also disappointed. I am sorry. I wanted so much to win it - but Chen Long was too aggressive,” Lee was quoted as saying by Malaysian media after the 21-19 21-19 loss. “I tried ... but he was returning all my shots. I tried to break his rhythm and open up the game. I tried to play patiently but I was making some simple mistakes. He was just unstoppable.”

SPORTS Lee came into the event with concerns about a thigh muscle injury which had prevented his Commonwealth Games title defense and was also caught in a row between the BAM and his coach. Men’s singles coach Rashid Sidek was banned from traveling to Denmark but then allowed to work with his shuttlers after the country’s sports minister stepped in to broker a peace deal. It appeared to do the trick as twice Olympic runner-up Lee raced through to the final without dropping a game, raising hopes Malaysia’s favored son would finally deliver a major title on the significant day. But the tall Chen, bronze medallist at the London Games two years ago, proved too strong as extended China’s stranglehold of the men’s title to seven consecutive championships and leave Malaysia still waiting for a first. “I am disappointed because we have failed to end a 37-year drought in the championships,” BAM deputy president Mohamad Norza said.

“I sympathize for Chong Wei who tried his best to win the title. “I would also like to apologize to the people of Malaysia because we ended up with only a runner-up spot on a day when Malaysians celebrated Independence Day.” The 31-year-old Lee, who suffered his third successive defeat in the world championship final, was already looking ahead to the Sept. 19-Oct. 4 Asian Games, one of his last chances to end his major title drought. The row between his coach Rashid and the BAM had intensified after the poor performances by Lee’s understudies at the Commonwealth Games and the body are anxious about finding someone to fill the void with Lee likely to retire after the 2016 Rio Games. “It is a must to find Chong Wei’s successor soon. They must be exposed and moulded to take over. We must also continue our development programs,” Norza said.

Bautista Agut for a place in the quarter-finals. Gilles Simon sent Spanish fourth seed Ferrer crashing to his earliest US Open defeat in five years with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win. The 26th seeded Simon capitalised on the 52 unforced errors of the 32-year-old Ferrer, a semi-finalist in 2007 and 2012, who appeared to struggle physically towards the end of their third-round clash. Simon goes on to face Marin Cilic of Croatia, who beat South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, for a place in the quarter-finals in a clash of two men who both missed the 2013 US Open.

US Open tennis: Federer shines, Ferrer crashed out

Simon was back in France for the birth of his second child while Cilic was serving out a doping ban.

New York, Sept 1, 2014 — Five-time champion Roger Federer sat out a two-hour break for torrential rain to race into the US Open fourth round yesterday on a stormy, humid New York day which saw David Ferrer crash to defeat.

The wiry 29-year-old Frenchman admitted he was delighted to have got the better of Ferrer against whom he had lost five times in six meetings.

Second-seeded Federer, the champion between 2004-2008, came back from a set down to defeat Spain’s Marcel Granollers 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 by racing away with 20 of the last 24 games of the match which had been interrupted due to rain and the threat of lightning. Federer, bidding to become the oldest Grand Slam champion in more than 40 years, clinched his 70th win at the

tournament on the back of 57 winners and 13 aces. But the 33-year-old had struggled in the first set where he slipped to 2-5 down against the world number 42 before he grasped welcome respite in the locker room to sit out the storm. “It was a good match and I managed to turn it around as Marcel was on fire at the start,” said Federer. “The break helped me and when I came back I played some great tennis. The conditions were windy and quick at the start but when we got back it was humid and that played in my favor.” Federer will face Spain’s Roberto

“He destroyed me five times before,” said Simon, one of five Frenchmen to reach the third round. “So I just tried to stay loose and relaxed and enjoy myself on court. But I am tired. The weather forecast said it would be cooler today but it didn’t feel like it.”

vili 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and next plays Dominic Thiem of Austria, the youngest player in the top 50 at just 20. Thiem, who turns 21 on Wednesday, reached his first Grand Slam last-16 with an impressive 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 win over left-handed serve-and-volleyer Feliciano Lopez of Spain who is 12 years his senior. “It’s my first US Open. I love to play at night and everything went well tonight,” said Thiem. Bulgarian seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov, who had never won a match in New York in three appearances before this year, is a potential quarter-final opponent of Federer. The 23-year-old Dimitrov plays Belgium’s David Goffin, the world 56, for the first time. Goffin had also never won a match in New York before this year and he comes into the event buoyed by a recent maiden title in Kitzbuhel and a quarter-final run at Winston-Salem where he had to qualify. Sunday’s action also throws up an intriguing all-French clash between Davis Cup teammates Richard Gasquet, the 12th seed, and 20th-seeded Gael Monfils. Gasquet boasts a 6-4 lead over crowd favorite Monfils who celebrates his 28h birthday on Monday.

Berdych faces rookie Thiem Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych, a semi-finalist in 2012, beat Georgian-born Russian Teymuraz Gabash-

Monfils has won both of their meetings this year and also claimed their only other match at the US Open in the fourth round in 2010.

HEALTH Women more at risk eating instant noodles Women who eat instant noodles at least two times a week face a greater risk of high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar and high cholesterol, researchers say. The study looked at data from 10,711 adults – slightly over half of whom were women – in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Researchers at Harvard University found that there was a 68% higher risk of metabolic syndrome among women, but not men, who ate instant noodles more than twice per week. Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes. It includes carrying too much fat around the waist.

“The consumption of instant noodles was associated with increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome in women, independent of major dietary patterns,” says the study in the Journal of Nutrition. In other words, it didn’t matter if women ate a largely traditional diet of rice, fish and vegetables, or a diet heavier in meat and fried foods – if they ate instant noodles twice weekly, they were at higher risk of health problems.

that women were more sensitive to the effects of carbohydrates, fat and salts. So how much is too much when it comes to instant noodles? “Once or twice a month is not a problem,” Hu was quoted telling The New York Times.

It was unclear why the effect was seen in women but not men. Since the data was based on surveys, researcher Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard, said it may be that women reported their diet more accurately than men, or

Intensive behavioral course can help overweight people Counseling on weight loss is key, recommends US health task force. Overweight patients with risk factors for heart disease should be sent by their doctors for intensive behavioral counseling about diet or exercise, according to new recommendations from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). That includes overweight people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, ‘metabolic syndrome’ or blood sugar levels higher then normal and on the cusp of type-2 diabetes. “My message for patients would be that we have the ability by changing our behavior to modify our risk for heart disease and stroke and your doctors can help you do that,” says Dr Michael L LeFevre, the chair of the Task Force. LeFevre is also vice chair in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia. The

recommendations are targeted to health care providers more than to patients, LeFevre admits. To the patients, he says, “The most important thing that we can do right now is have you lose some weight, be more active but just offering that advice and giving you a pamphlet, we don’t really find any evidence that that’s helpful.” Instead, the Task Force’s research review found that intensive behavioral counseling - involving multiple sessions with experts in nutrition and exercise over an extended period, for several months to a year - can help people lose weight and bring down their blood pressure and cholesterol. The researchers reviewed studies of various lifestyle interventions and found that with intensive counseling, many health markers were improved one and two years later, and the risk of diabetes decreased. “This crystalises 25 years of re-

search and a huge number of studies but I don’t think this is new or earth-shattering information,” says Dr Jennifer S Lin of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland Oregon. Lin was the lead author of the review. There is a great deal of data on people with heart attack and stroke risk factors and most of those studies focused on a combination of diet and exercise counseling, so those kinds of programs have the most evidence behind them at this point, she says. “On average we’re talking about a few milligrams of cholesterol per decilitre of blood or a couple of millimetres of Mercury decrease in blood pressure,” Lin says. “We’re calling that a modest benefit applied to a population but even these modest benefits translate into health outcomes that patients can actually feel,” she explains. Patients can’t necessarily feel when

their blood pressure goes down, but they can feel if they do or do not have a heart attack, she says. The best counseling interventions are not only frequent but conducted by trained dieticians, nutritionists, health educators and physiologists, she says. “They’re more than just didactic, more than classroom-based interventions, they’re individualized,” she says. One-on-one counseling gives experts time to assess the barriers to healthy diet and exercise for each person and help them overcome them, LeFevre says. “We need to see people repeatedly, to work with them and reinforce what’s going on,” LeFevre says.

Misc Asia Shaun the sheep may be the world’s woolliest Sydney, Aug 28, 2014 -- Two Australian farmers say that they may have found the world’s woolliest sheep, whose estimated 55 lb coat, if confirmed, could shatter the world record currently held by neighboring New Zealand.

Hello Kitty is not a cat, says founder Tokyo, Aug 28, 2014 — Hello Kitty is not a cat, the company behind Japan’s global icon of cute insisted Thursday, despite an uproar from Internet users who spluttered: “But she’s got whiskers!” The moon-faced creation that adorns everything from pencil cases to pyjamas the world over is, in fact, human. “Hello Kitty is a cheerful and happy little girl with a heart of gold,” brand owner Sanrio says on its website.

farmers said, but he was due to have a date with the clippers in the next few days.

“He couldn’t see very well because of the wool over his face, so I snuck up behind him and grabbed ahold of him,” farmer Peter Hazell told reporters.

The Australian farmers say they anticipate Shaun will overtake the current world record, held by a New Zealand sheep called Shrek.

The six-year-old merino sheep had likely never been shorn in his life, the

toon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature.” And indeed, an enquiry as to the status—feline or otherwise—of one of Japan’s most famous exports confirmed her non-cat identity. “It is a 100-percent personified character,” a Sanrio spokesman told AFP in Tokyo. “The design takes the motif of a cat, but there is no element of a cat in Hello Kitty’s setting.”

The shocking revelation came to light when a Hawaii-based academic specializing in the epitome of “kawaii” (“cute” in Japanese) asked Sanrio to fact-check captions for an exhibition she was curating to mark the 40th anniversary of Hello Kitty

Her real name is Kitty White, he explained, and she was born in southern England on November 1, 1974. She is a Scorpio and blood type A.

Christine Yano, an anthropologist from the University of Hawaii, told the Los Angeles Times that she “was corrected—very firmly” by Sanrio that Kitty was not a cat.

She has a twin sister, Minny White, and lives in an unnamed suburb of London with father George and mother Mary, according to her profile on the web.

“That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show,” the paper quoted her as saying.

Despite her whiskers and pointy ears, just like the rest of her family, Kitty has her own pet—a “real” cat named Charmmy Kitty.

“Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a car-

Shaun the sheep was found on Sunday wandering in a country area near the town of Oatlands, 52 miles from Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, the largely rural island state off Australia’s southeastern coast.

Agog at the news

Her life story has always been there, the spokesman said, adding the personification is meant to make her fans feel closer to the character “as a friend”. Web users were agog at the news. “Hello Kitty is not actually a cat. MIND BLOWN”, tweeted @killedbydying “’Sanrio confirms that Hello Kitty is NOT a cat.’ One of the many reasons why I have trust issues”, wrote @ eisakuivan “So Hello Kitty isn’t a cat? Everything I know is a lie,” said @nymbc Asked about the worldwide reaction to the shock revelation that Hello Kitty is not a cat, the Sanrio spokesman offered: “I don’t think anyone in Japan found it surprising.”

“There is an explanation we have made the whole time, and I think that’s how people have understood it.” A straw poll of Japanese people within Tokyo found that not to be the case, however. The Sanrio spokesman explained that Kitty and her family were given no specific nationality but were designed to be living in Britain, because many girls in Japan had strong admiration for the Western lifestyle in the 1970s. Ever since the mouthless white character first appeared in 1974 on a coin purse in Japan, she has graced tens of thousands of products, from handbags to aircraft, in some 130 countries. But just remember: she’s not a cat.

Misc Asia World’s cleanest hotels in Tokyo, dirtiest in Rio de Janeiro NOT all hotels live up to the same standards when it comes to cleanliness. And while some properties seem to have made it a top priority, others seem to have let things slide in the housekeeping department. According to a recent study conducted by Hotel. info, spotless hotel rooms are easier to find in some cities than in others.

Taiwan to spend US$2.5 Billion in the next nine years on anti-missile systems Taipei, Aug 30, 2014 — Taiwan plans to spend TW$74.8 billion in the next nine years to acquire anti-missile systems to boost its aerial defenses against China, a lawmaker and media said today. The defense ministry aims to purchase the locally-made Tien Kung 3 (Sky Bow 3) surface-to-air missile system between 2015 and 2024 to replace the ageing Hawk missile systems, said lawmaker Lin Yu-fang of the parliament’s defense committee. This will be the biggest procurement of domestically-made weapon systems in recent years, Lin said, citing a defene budget plan submitted to the parliament for approval yesterday. The Tien Kung 3 surface-to-air missile system, developed by Taiwan’s Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology, is designed to counter tactical ballistic missiles for air defense missions and missile interception, according to Lin. The institute reportedly has spent more than TW$20 billion to develop the anti-missile system since 1996.

Taiwan unveiled the Tien Kung 3 missile to the public at a national day parade in 2007 and tested it at a major missile drill in 2011. Taiwan’s Apple Daily newspaper quoted former defense minister Kao Hua-chu as saying that the Tien Kung 3 system can help intercept China’s cruise missiles and counter the threats of its J-20 stealth fighter to strengthen Taiwan’s aerial defense capabilities. Tensions between Taipei and Beijing have eased markedly since Ma Yingjeou became Taiwan’s president in 2008 on a China-friendly platform. He was re-elected in 2012. But China still considers the selfruled island as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary. The two sides split in 1949 at the end of a civil war. Taiwanese experts estimate the People’s Liberation Army currently has more than 1,600 missiles aimed at the island. Defense officials were not immediately available for comment.

Tourists are most likely to find an immaculate hotel room while traveling to Tokyo. In the cleanliness category, hotels in the Japanese capital scored an average rating of 8.93/10 on the website. Next in the ranking is Warsaw, Poland with an average rating of 8.76, just ahead of Seoul, South Korea. Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, also achieved a high score (8.54), tying with Bulgarian capital Sofia.

At the other end of the ranking, although the ratings are not catastrophic, Rio de Janeiro holds the dubious distinction of the lowest score with 7.29/10. Overall, Western European hotels hardly impressed the website’s users in terms of hygiene. Four of the continent’s capitals obtained some of the worst scores: London, England (7.52); Oslo, Norway (7.53); Amsterdam, the Netherlands (7.58) and Copenhagen, Denmark (7.60). The world’s top tourist destination, Paris also has room for improvement when it comes to the cleanliness of its hotels. The French capital scored a paltry 7.63. Hotel.info based the ranking on hotel ratings entered on its website by its over 6 million users.

Philippines ex-lawmaker gets life for kidnapping Manila, August 27, 2014 - A Philippine former congressman and actor was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for the kidnapping of a three-year-old Filipino-Chinese boy in 2005. Dennis Roldan, now a lay pastor, was found guilty of masterminding the abduction of the boy for ransom, who was rescued unharmed 11 days after he was seized while on the way to school in Manila. The boy testified at the trial and positively identified Roldan as the “big boss” in his kidnapping. No ransom was paid, as the rescue was carried out while the family was negotiating with the kidnappers. Two of Roldan’s co-accused were also convicted, while one was acquitted by the Pasig City Regional Trial Court.

Teresita Ang See, who runs a group helping victims of kidnapping and other violent crimes, hailed the conviction. “It pays to fight back,” she said. “Kidnapping will continue to be a perfect crime if you continue to just pay ransom and not file cases.” Roldan accepted his conviction calmly, saying: “Everything has a purpose. Maybe the Lord still has something to fix in me. Maybe this is part of my history. All things are God’s divine will.” There were 50 recorded kidnappings last year in the Philippines, where criminal syndicates often prey on wealthy Filipino-Chinese families. Of those, 20 took place in the southern regions, where Muslim rebels in Mindanao also carry out abductions to raise funds for their activities.

MEAT

Meat 101 : A guide on everything you need to know about butchering New York, Aug 26, 2014 — In his first book, “Meat: Everything You Need to Know,” fourth-generation butcher Pat LaFrieda gives a detailed guide on butchering a cow, pig, lamb and chicken and shares tips on how to cook the various cuts.

able to take the first two cuts of the steak off the chuck, you are talking about steaks that are identical, if not better, to the ribeye.

“Meat,” due out on September 2, also features more than 75 recipes including some from his own family and others from such celebrity chef customers as Lidia Bastianich.

A: Through the years, we have had a lot of demand for grass-fed beef. But restaurants have found the meat has less flavor, less marbling and not as tender. It also has a bit of a bitter aftertaste. Grass-fed is only about 0.5 per cent of the meat we sell. To be clear, non grass-fed beef is fed grass 85 per cent of its life. It’s finished off 15 per cent with grain, which may or may not include corn.

LaFrieda is a former stockbroker whose great grandfather opened a butcher shop in New York City in 1922. Since taking over in the early 1990s, he has grown the family business into a US$120 million company that delivers gourmet steaks, pork and chicken to 1,200 restaurants across the United States. The 42-year-old New York native spoke about the best kind of meat and going into the family business. Q: Why did you write this book? A: I speak to chefs every night to help them develop their menus and answer their questions about meat. I got to see the thirst for meat knowledge and how little of it there is out there. Q: What are the under-appreciated cuts you see right now? A: A great example is the chuck eye steak. The muscles of the ribeye, which we all love, don’t end right there, they continue into the shoulder. If you are

Q: Do restaurants still prefer grassfed beef?

Q: What are your standards for buying meats? A: The best meat you could eat is without growth hormone and antibiotics ever. There are some beef products that are given growth hormone and/or antibiotics up to a certain point, so by the time it hits the kill floor they are at untraceable levels. I don’t agree with that. I love the ‘never, ever’ program. Q: What is your view about the ‘head-to-tail’ trend in cooking the whole animal? A: I don’t like it if we are talking about an 850-pound steer. That means you need to take each cut, properly wrap it and freeze it. A high percentage of meat that goes into people’s freezer never comes out. Once it comes out, it goes into the garbage. I think that’s a

waste. If you are talking about a small animal, it gets roasted whole and gets consumed right away. That’s a different story. Q: Why did you switch from selling stocks to selling meat? A: Going to Wall Street was really to satisfy my dad. I hated it so much. I really had it in my heart to want to go into the family business. Five-minute Marinated Skirt Steak (Serves 6) 2 cups Five-minute Marinade (see below)
