Each Community has its own capacities, vulnerabilities, character and political structure, but many communities in the NJ-NY-CT-PA region face shared challenges in relation to environmental disaster. This document is a report-back from the Regional Catastrophic Planning Team’s (RCPT) Participatory Urban Planning (PUP) series, the focus of which was post-disaster interim housing.
The 5 workshops brought together representatives from all levels of government, NGOs, academia, the private sector and the community to strategize interim housing for the gap between emergency sheltering and residents’ return home after a disaster. The brainstorming sessions produced a wide range of solutions -- from potential sites for installing pre-fabricated housing modules to policy-based coordination of housing resources among neighboring states.
PUP was funded by FEMA under the Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program, with support from the NYC Office of Emergency Management.
